WASTE of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few ears after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained. but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested. but without any illusions that it will be followed or that much attention will be paid to it.

The splitting of the coal by partings is a familiar feature of many coal beds. The partings are normally argillaceous, more rarely sandy or calcareous. The material is usually fine-grained, less frequently coarse-grained to conglomeratic. Many partings are wedge-shaped, others are lenticular, and in some coal beds thin partings but one or two inches thick persist as thin sheets throughout areas of regional extent. The origin of the partings differs, and in some cases is obscure and uncertain. Origin of Thick Partings Wedge-shaped Partings Wedge-shaped partings are normally of indefinite linear extent but of short transverse section. They are developed adjacent to the borders of the original peat-forming swamp or around islands formed within the swamp, hence their presence is indicative of the approximate limit of the coal bed or of an interruption in the continuity of the coal bed. Following deposition of the parting gradual reestablishment of swamp conditions is followed by burial of the parting with accumulating peat. Partings developed adjacent to the borders of swamps normally thicken toward the periphery of the swamp and represent either detrital materials carried in from adjacent land areas during floods or materials carried in by advancing waves and currents after a barrier confining the swamp had been breached by the waves. Partings formed in the manner first mentioned should become coarser and more arenaceous toward the source of supply of the detrital materials, and the overlying and underlying coal should gradually grade into carbonaceous shale as the margin of the original swamp is approached. Partings formed by advance of waves across a barrier should be largely or entirely arenaceous, thin wedges of short longitudinal section, possibly with fossils of marine or brackish affinity. The subjacent coal normally should "pinch out" against the barrier, and the overlying coal continue to the barrier, or even extend across it, depending on the geographic conditions established following the breaching of the original barrier. ONE of the major purposes of the Institute is to "maintain ... a library of books relating to subjects cognate to the sciences and arts of mining and metallurgy." In conformance with this purpose the Institute maintained its own library for a number of years until 1912 when it was merged with the libraries of the other Founder Societies. At that time the A.I.M.E.'s share of operating expenses was wholly covered by the income from a $100,000 gift from James Douglas. But interest on the Douglas Library Fund has declined from 51/2 per cent to 31/4 per cent; the library has grown from some 50,000 volumes in 1913 to more than 170,000 in 1945, with consequently increased costs; and its costs nave otherwise risen. The Institute today contributes to the library annually about 65c per member, of which about 25c is income from the Douglas Fund, or a net charge, from regular income, of 40c per member. THE 131st meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York on Feb. 16 to 20, 1925, with the largest registration of any previous meeting, the total being 1320 compared to 1276 in 1924. The technical sessions were more largely attended and aroused more discussion than ever before. There were joint meetings with the Mining Section of the National Safety Council, under the auspices of the Industrial Relations Committee of the Institute and two very important lectures, the Howe Memorial Lecture, under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee, and the lecture by Dr. Carl Benedicks, of Sweden, on Corrosion, under the auspices of the Institute of Metals Division. The Petroleum Division conducted its annual Symposium on Oil which will be published later in book form. At the annual business meeting on Feb. 17, the following ticket was elected, and the reports of the President, Treasurer, and Secretary 'were presented:

THE method usually employed in accurate determinations of sulhur in pig-iron and steel is to treat a weighed sample of borings in a flask with muriatic acid, and to pass the gaseous products through an alkaline solution of lead or silver, which precipitates all the sulphur of the sulphuretted hydrogen in the form of sulphide of lead or silver. The sulphide thus formed is subsequently oxidized by aqua regia, bromine, or other oxidizing agent, and the sulphuric acid formed precipitated in the usual way by chloride of barium. I have substituted for the alkaline metallic solution, a solution of permanganate of potash in the strength of one gramme of permanganate to 200 cubic centimetres of water, and find that it gives results quite as accurate as those obtained by using an ammoniacal solution of silver. By the employment of the permanganate it will be readily seen that there is considerable saving of time and work. In order to test the accuracy of the method, six samples of pig-iron borings were weighed out (about six grammes each) and treated identically

KURDJUMOV and Maksimova reported experiments with manganese steels and high carbon steels' and with an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy' in which mar-tensite was formed isothermally over a range of temperatures. They found in some cases that mar-tensite formation could be suppressed by rapid quenching to liquid nitrogen temperature. From their microstructural observations of martensite formed isothermally, they concluded that the rate controlling step is nucleation rather than growth. Kulin and Cohen,3 in an attempt to reproduce these experiments, found that with a steel having the same composition as that reported by Kurd-jumov and Maksimova, the transformation to martensite was essentially complete above the temperature range of Kurdjumov and Maksimova's isotherms. The possible reasons for this disagreement were not considered. Recent papers by Das Gupta and Lement4 and Kulin and Speich5 report the formation of isothermal martensite in a high chromium steel and in an Fe-Cr-Ni alloy, but neither paper can be considered a verification of the original Kurdjumov and Maksimova results. Further, in neither case were the authors able to suppress the formation of martensite entirely. Because of the important bearing the Kurdjumov and Maksimova results have to an understanding of the mechanism of martensite reactions it was felt that an experimental investigation directly concerned with checking the validity of their results was in order. This paper describes the results obtained on the isothermal transformation over the temperature range from —79" to —196°C of an alloy of iron, nickel, and manganese. Experimental Apparatus A 15 lb heat of an alloy containing 73.3 pct Fe, 23.0 pct Ni, and 3.7 pct Mn was melted by induction and cast under argon. The ingot was forged to 1-in. bar and a portion rolled to 1/16x1 1/2-in. strip. This strip was pack-homogenized 300 hr at 1100" in a helium-filled sealed iron tube. The composition after homogenization was 73.2 pct Fe, 22.94 pct Ni, 3.73 pct Mn, 0.05 pct C, and 0.015 pct N. The strips were cut to 1/2-in. width for dilatometer and metal-lographic specimens. Only the center portion of the 11/2-in. strip was used in the present investigation. The dilatometer employed was similar in design to one described by Flinn, Cook, and Fellows." A concentric fused auartz rod and tube assembly with hooks for holding the specimen was mounted so as to transmit the specimen dilation to a 1/10,000 in., 1/10 in. travel dial gage. The dilatometer proper was mounted by means of extension arms to a counterweighted sliding member on a vertical standard. This method of mounting permitted rapid transfer of the dilatometer from the austenitizing furnace to the quenching bath and low temperature chamber. A small electrical vibrator on the dilatometer kept frictional effects of the quartz members at a minimum. The austenitizing unit was a vertical, molybdenum-wound, hydrogen atmosphere furnace maintained at a constant temperature ±3°C by means of constant power input. A 12-in. stainless steel jacketed copper liner having 1/2-in wall thickness acted to equalize the temperature in the hot zone of the furnace. This liner, closed at the bottom end and open at the top to permit entrance of the dilatometer and specimen, was kept filled with dry nitrogen gas. A chromel-alumel thermocouple was placed inside the tube to determine the temperature. The 4-in. dilatometer specimens in the chamber varied less than 1/2° across the specimen length except for a 1 1/20 drop at the end nearest the open end of the furnace. The low temperature isothermal holding bath was a double Dewar arrangement similar to one described by Turnbull7. The outer bath was filled with a refrigerant at a temperature lower than the desired holding temperature. The inner bath was filled with Freon "11" or "12" or a mixture of both, depending upon the holding temperature. This inner bath which tended to be cooled by the outer bath was kept at a constant temperature by introducing a small amount of heat with a manually controlled electric heater. Stirring was accomplished by bubbling dry air through the bath. A Leeds and North-rup type K potentiometer was used to measure the inner bath temperature as indicated by a five element copper-constantan thermopile. The bath temperature was maintained within ±0.2°C of the desired temperature by occasionally adjusting the heater current so as to keep the Leeds and Northrup galvanometer at zero deflection with a constant setting of the potentiometer. Isothermal tests were usually continued for 300 to 400 min and another reading made at approximately 1000 min if the bath, unattended overnight, had not deviated in temperature more than 5°C. Transformation curves are drawn dashed (Fig. 1) through the time region where temperature was not controlled precisely. Experimental Procedure Dilatometer specimens of 1/2x1/16-in. strip were cut to 41/2-in. length and holes were drilled for the quartz hooks with proper spacing to give a 4-in. measured length. RAPID progress has been made during the past year in the copper mills throughout the country. Particular efforts have been made to increase the fine-grinding efficiency by the installation of larger classifying units operating in closed circuit with ball mills, such as the 78-in. high-weir Akins installation at the Phelps Dodge plant at Ajo, Ariz.; also the Type "FX" Dorr classifiers of Nevada Consolidated at McGill. Nev. and the "FX" Dorr bowl classifier of the Braden Copper Co. in Chile. Some of the copper milling plants in the Southwest, such as Chino in New Mexico and Ray Con. in Arizona, have replaced rolls operating wet in their fine-grinding circuit by rod mills. At Hollinger primary rod mills were formerly used in open circuit followed by pebble mills in closed circuit with classifiers. They now have primary ball mills in closed circuit with large extra heavy classifiers and no secondary mills. This new installation is producing the same grinding on 5000 tons per day with a reduction in cost of nearly 4c. per ton. At the Braden plant, in Chile, short-head Symons crushers have replaced 54-in. rolls, thereby in- creasing crushing capacity with some saving in maintenance cost.

DURING 1950 the jet-piercing process was used commercially in the piercing of primary blast-holes in magnetic taconite at the preliminary taconite plant of .the Erie Mining Co., Aurora, Minn. The Erie Mining Co. purchased a jet-piercing machine and associated equipment in 1949, and the machine has been in operation since its installation in the summer of that year. An overall view of the pit with the JPM-1 jet-piercing machine in operation is shown in Fig. 1. During three months of 1949 and continuously since February 1950, production piercing took place under all pit conditions. By the end of October 1950, a total of 15,000 linear ft of hole had been pierced in an open pit handling an average of 1200 to 1800 tons of crude a day in one 8-hr shift. While it is recognized that this output does not approach the millions of tons a year planned for the developing Minnesota taconite projects, the machine as a unit has been operating under conditions probably more adverse than those that eventually will be encountered in the large operations. This pilot operation has permitted evaluation of the piercing problem in the full-scale taconite plant. This paper describes jet-piercing process funda- mentals, important features of the latest jet-piercing burners and machine, actual piercing results obtained, and new developments that give promise of materially increasing overall process efficiency. To produce the blasthole, jet-piercing utilizes thermal energy, as contrasted with the application of mechanical energy in churn drills and jackham-mers. The heart of the process may be termed a tailored flame produced by a rocket-type burner, thermodynamically similar in every respect to that of the giant rockets being developed for military purposes. The heat release in the combustion chamber of the burner is about 50x10' Btu per cu ft per hr as compared with 5x10' for most modern steam generators.* Combustion of liquid petroleum fuels (kerosine, diesel oil, or No. 2 fuel oil) with gaseous oxygen in the burner chamber at pressures of 100 to 200 psi results in temperatures of about 4300°F. Expansion of the hot combustion gases through divergent nozzles produces high-temperature supersonic jets having measured velocities of about 6000 fps. Impinging the flame jets on rock causes a thin surface layer to expand and break away from the base as a result of the thermally induced stresses. This spalling action is aided further in chert and quartzite by the 0.82 pct volume change resulting from the 6 to p quartz inversion at 1066"F.t The dynamic action of the jets whisks the spalled rock

A COMMERCIAL development requiring a suitable alloy or alloys for sealing into various grades of glass made it desirable to have a more exact knowledge of the expansion characteristics of the nickel-iron alloys than appeared in the published literature. A.) types of glass under consideration varies from 2.7 to 10.4 X 10-6 per degree Centigrade, over the range 20° to 400° C. For reference, the thermal expansion curves f several types of glass used for sealing by the lamp and tube industries are given (Figs. 1 and 2). This paper covers a detailed investigation of the thermal expansion of a series of nickel-iron alloys in which the nickel content varies from 30 to 70 per cent. Particular stress is laid on the alloys that contain between 40 and 55 per cent Ni.

WITH the extensive deposits of potash minerals which have been dis-covered in the southwestern states, and their rapid development, a permanent. American supply of potassium compounds is now assured. The 325-year history of the potash industry in this country has been told by H. I. Smith1, of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the more recent activities of the Survey and of American potash companies were described last year by the same author2. In fact, it may be stated that so great is the productive capacity that two mines in New Mexico and one in California are able to supply more than half a million tons of crude and refined salts over and above that produced for agricultural purposes. The era of scarcity has given way to an era of superabundance. This situation makes it desirable for the potash producer to look for other applications for his product, and it is with this in mind that the writer presents some information pertaining to present and possible future uses for potassium compounds in the ceramic industry.

ThEre has been much progress in the last two decades in understanding the hardenability of steel. Roughly, the progress has been along two lines, which may be designated as empirical and fundamental. This empirical work has progressed to the point where steels may be manufactured to the desired characteristics quite closely and heat-treatment and application problems can be approached with considerable confidcnce. Particularly noteworthy among the empirical work is that of Grossmann,12. who has given formulas for calculating hardenability as a function of composition, and the establishment of the isothermal transformation curve by Davenport and Bain.13 The latter does not fall entirely in the class of an empirical study, for while it provides a means of presenting a tremendous amount of empirical data in the form of a single curve, it also outlines clearly the problems that face the fundamental investigator. The isothermal transformation curve shows clearly that the phenomena occurring in the neighborhood of the knee of the curve are those that limit the hardenability of steel. Above the knee of the curve, the product of decomposition of austenite is lamellar pearlite and fundamental progress has consisted chiefly of a detailed study of structure and formation of pearlite, largely at the hands of Mehl and his collaborators.'-5 They have shown that formation of pearlite proceeds by a process of nuclea-tion and growth and they measured both the nucleation and growth rate. However, there is still a wide gap between our empirical knowledge and fundamental knowledge, owing largely to the fact that there is no satisfactory theory of nucleation rate or of growth rate. This paper is being written in an attempt to Hl in a small part of the gap. A method was prcsented recently1' for calculating the velocity of edgewise growth of pearlite using an expression for the carbon concentration that satisfies the diffusion equation. The edgewise velocity of pearlite growth in a plain carbon eu-tectoid steel was calculated, using linear extrapolations of the ferrite and comentite solubilities. While the results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental facts, the calculated velocity of edgewise growth is smaller at 600°C. than G, the radial growth velocity of pearlite nodules, whereas one would expect it to be larger. In this paper the calculation will be repeated using a new extrapolation for the ferrite solubility, which gives better agreement between G and T', the calculated velocity of edgewise growth. A calculation will also be made of the effect of carbon content on velocity of edgewise growth, and the problems of calculating the effects of other alloying elements on growth rates will be discussed. SCANDINAVIAN countries seem somehow to furnish an amount of talent and leadership far be- yond their population and among them Sweden is possibly at the top. The United States has many eminent citizens born in the latter, country or who are of Swedish descent and the engineers may claim their full share. In fact, the number is so large that a flourishing Swedish-American Engineering Society has been formed, including a number of A. I. M. E. members. Dr. Waldemar Lindgren is more scientist than engineer, though his work in economic geology has contributed directly to the development of many mines, and he is the valued- adviser of a number of our larger companies. Probably he, himself, values most highly the contributions he has been able to make to scientific theories of the occurrence and genesis of ore deposits. His fellow scientists have placed upon these the high mark of approval by electing him to the National Academy of Sciences, and Princeton University in 1916 recognized his position by conferring on him the degree of Doctor of Science.

THE first meeting" of the Iron and Steel Division was held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, with nearly 100 men present and C. B. Murray as chairman. This was a round table discussion of iron ore beneficiation and of its relation to blast-furnace operations, and only one paper was presented, by Clyde E. Williams. Mr. Williams discussed the future of the Lake Superior district in its relation to the iron and steel industry. He stated that although estimates had shown that the total life of the present known iron ore reserves of the Lake Superior district was 20 to 30 years and that many believed that as a result of this depletion foreign ores would be brought to the Atlantic Seaboard, thus causing a displacement of the steel industry to the East, he believed that the Lake Superior district would continue to be the important producer of iron ore used in this country for decades beyond the predicted time before the exhaustion of the present known reserves. He described the three general types of ores that required concentration and pointed out the needs for research and the proper methods to be used in processes for the beneficiation of these low-grade materials. He discussed the effects of fine concentrates and the use of agglomerated ores in the blast furnace. This general summary led to interesting and valuable discussion on the various economic, ore-dressing, and blast-furnace problems in large-scale development of beneficiation. Perry Harrison described recent developments in sintering and the properties of iron ore sinter. T. B. Counselman and W. H. Coghill discussed the merits of classification of iron ore previous to tabling. Robert Faulkner and J. E. Little described the beneficiation plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

I have the honor to submit herewith the report of the Secretary for the year 1915 showing the principal activities of the Institute: Meetings.-The 110th Meeting, including the Annual Business Meeting, was held in New York City, Feb. 15 to 17, 1915. The full report of this meeting is given in Volume LI of the Transactions. The number of papers presented was 53, and the attendance was 357 members and guests. The 111th Meeting was held in San Francisco, Cal., Sept. 16 to 19, 1915. Sixty-eight technical papers were presented, and the attendance was over 400 members and guests. The full report of this meeting is given in the Bulletin for December, 1915. Local Section.-A new, strong Local Section of the Institute, with head-quarters in Arizona and known as the Arizona Section, was formed during 1915. The physical arrangement of the continuous casting facilities at Algoma have been described a number of times in previous papers. For the purposes of this discussion, it is sufficient to state that the casting plant is located at a considerable distance from the basic oxygen shop which supplies it, involving a relatively lengthy ladle transfer movement. (Fig. I) The handling of the ladle by two separate cranes, first to the argon station, and thence to the casting machines, results in an average interval, from start tap to start cast, of 45 minutes. The effects of such extended retention time on temperature control and on refractory performance are well known. Tapping temperatures well above normal are necessary to insure that the ensuing heat losses do not result in an undue incidence of premature tundish freeze-offs. The heat lost, as well as being a function of the retention time, becomes more critical with smaller ladle size; winter temperatures add to the problem with their effect in chilling ladles and increasing radiant losses.

THE steel industry has always been noted for producing men of forceful and versatile personality, many of whom combine the practicality that results from wide experience with an excellent theoretical background that comes from a college training plus years of wide and constant study of metallurgical literature. One of the best known examples of this type is Earle C. Smith, present Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division. After graduating from Ohio State and from Columbia, where he studied under Campbell, Earle started his career at that grand old prewar training school for steel men the Illinois Steel Co., where in the days of the twelve-hour shift he worked on the open-hearth floor. Following World War I, when he was in charge of government inspection at the Central Steel Co., Massillon, Earle held successively jobs of increasing responsibility with Central Alloy Steel, and when this company was taken over by Republic in 1930 he was made assistant district manager and a few years later was appointed chief metallurgist of the whole corporation.
