A group of 13 cities situated in Los Angeles and Orange counties in Southern California is engaged in constructing an aqueduct to carry water from the Colorado River at a point near Parker, Arizona, to a distribution point near Riverside, California. The aqueduct will have a total length of approximately 241 miles, and is designed to deliver 1605 cu. ft. of water per second, or a little more than one billion gallons per day. The aqueduct crosses a barren, desert waste and the project includes approximately 91 miles of 16-ft. tunnel. The large amount of tunnel driving that has been done in this country in the past few years has resulted in some remarkable developments in equipment and methods. The building of the Colorado River Aqueduct,, with its 91 miles of tunnels, has called on the best engineering knowledge in the country. New and better equipment has been designed for all phases of the work, and this equipment has been coordinated and adapted to the various conditions with a high degree of efficiency. The result has been that records for tunnel driving have been set under adverse natural conditions that exceed the estimates for progress under good conditions. All of the tunnels in the main aqueduct, except the Valverde and Bernasconi at the western end, have a finished diameter, inside the concrete lining, of 16 ft. Fig. 4 shows a section of the tunnel with the concrete lining in place. Fig. 5 illustrates the finished tunnel in three typical sections. The standard tunnel grade is 3.432 ft. per mile in the 16-ft. tunnels, but the Valverde and Bernasconi tunnels have a steeper grade and a finished diameter of 15 ft. 3 in. The rough bore of the large main aqueduct tunnels averages 12.95 solid cubic yards of material per foot of advance in timbered sections and 10.76 solid cubic yards per foot in unsupported sections. MORE ORE is mined in the Bingham District than in any other mining district in Utah. In addition to the open-pit operations of the Utah Copper Co., there have been, many large underground mines. Until recent years the principal production was from the Jordan and Commercial limestones, but in the last eight years valuable ore deposits have been developed in the so-called alphabetical or "A," "B," "C," and "D" limestones, mainly by the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. The value of these developments has led the company just mentioned to acquire large holdings in the district and within the last year to install at the Niagara shaft a hoist capable of going to a vertical depth of 4000 ft., or 1800 ft. deeper than the present lowest level. THE first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lürmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful -gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgow Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite's experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. The following investigation was undertaken to develop a method for determining with reasonable accuracy the depth of overburdens of 100 ft. or less. Seismic methods seemed to offer good possibilities. The problem differed from that of the familiar salt-dome location in that the depth of overburden to be determined is much less than is encountered in oil prospecting. This means that a much shorter time interval must be measured with accuracy. Refraction methods seem at present to offer greater possibilities than reflection. The air sound persists for from 0.1 to 0.5 sec., because of echoes, and seismic reflections coming during this time are difficult to detect. A seismometer sensitive to vertical vibrations only offers possibilities and has been used here with some success. It is hoped that the application of this type of seismometer to reflection shooting in this region may be investigated still further. The apparatus used consisted of a carbon-button seismometer followed by a three-stage, transformer-coupled, vacuum-tube amplifier and a General Radio string oscillograph. Time marks are provided by a 1000-cycle, 600-r.p.m., synchronous motor provided with five spokes which intercept the light to the camera at 1/50 sec. intervals. This motor is driven by a two-stage vacuum-tube amplifier of 3 watt output, actuated by a tuning fork. The power supply for the seismometer amplifier is one 2-volt storage and one 45-volt B battery. The motor amplifier is powered by a 6-volt storage battery and 6 to 225-volt, 15-watt motor generator. The temperature-frequency characteristics of the tuning fork have been determined and for ordinary working temperatures the error in time that would be introduced is less than M millisecond for time intervals up to 100 milliseconds. The impact is produced by a sledge blow for surface distances less than 100 ft. and dynamite for greater distances. Two steel balls with wires attached form an electric circuit through a 1-ft. piece of railroad rail upon which they rest. MINE fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of some combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably-by C. L. Berrien,1 R.. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, and that is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made-to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working father away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases.

DURING the recent development of aluminum alloys for free-cutting screw-machine rod, it became desirable to know something of the solubility of lead and bismuth in liquid aluminum and in some aluminum alloys. The literature is not particularly helpful in supplying this information. These portions, therefore, of the constitutional relationships of aluminum-ismuth and aluminum-lead alloys were investigated by thermal analysis and by chemical analysis of samples taken from aluminum-rich melts in equilibrium with precipitated lead or bismuth. The solubility of lead and bismuth in some liquid aluminum-copper alloys was also investi-gated. Some consideration was also given to the solubility of these elements in solid aluminum. Among the earliest investigators of the aluminum-lead and aluminum-bismuth systems was Wright,1 who reported that melts of aluminum and lead formed two layers indicating limited liquid solubility. Under his conditions, the aluminum-rich layer was reported to contain 1.91 per cent Pb and the lead-rich layer, 0.07 per cent Al. Subsequently, Pecheau2 found that in aluminum-rich alloy melts with more than 10 per cent Pb three layers were distinguishable. He reported that the middle layer contained from 3 to 10 per cent Pb. He also found that the melting point of aluminum appeared to be lowered slightly by the addition of lead. Gwyer3 investigated these alloys and found evidence of a slight lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of either lead or bismuth. He found no evidence of solid solubility in either case and made no attempt to determine the liquidus curves. Hansen and Blumen-thal4 reported that the addition of lead distinctly lowered the solidifica-tion point of aluminum. They also found that bismuth lowered the melting point of aluminum. Guillet5 reported almost complete mutual immiscibility for the aluminum-bismuth alloys in the liquid state. Bohner6 examined the effect of various concentrations of lead and bis-muth on the electrical conductivity of aluminum. He found decreases in conductivity on annealing at 500° C. as compared with the conductivity of the same alloys on annealing at 300° C.

THE decomposition of austenite in steels, because of its immense practical importance, has been subjected to extensive study in recent years from the point of view of the mechanism of the process.1-3 Although much information has been acquired, a number of questions, principally of theoretical interest, remain. One is that of the atomic-crystallographic mechanism by which each of the various reaction products forms. The isothermal reaction products of the eutectoid decomposition in plain carbon steels (to which this study is restricted) have conveniently been classified in three general groupings-pearlite, bainite, and martensite. Of these several products, pearlite and martensite have been studied extensively, but bainite has received only scant attention. As a result, the mechanism of the formation of pearlite and that of martensite are now fairly well understood while a great deal of uncertainty exists regarding bainite. PEARLITE Pearlite forms from austenite by the precipitation of alternate platelets of cementite and ferrite, which grow into the austenite matrix .2-5 The rate of reaction may be described in terms of a rate of nucleation and a rate of growth.2.3 Mehl and Smith6 have attempted to determine the lattice relationships existing between the ferrite in pearlite and the parent austenite. Using a pole-figure method of analysis, it was found that a limited number of ferrite orientations resulted from the decomposition of a single grain of austenite; it was not possible, however, to decide between two assumed ideal relationships, both of which appeared to account for the experimentally determined pole figure. It was definitely shown, however, that the relationship obtaining was quite different from that determined for the proeutectoid separation of ferrite.7 No attempt was made to determine the habit plane (matrix plane to which the precipitate lies parallel) of the pearlite lamellae. THE Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barcenite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. INTRODUCTION The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarello,2 Mactear3 and Merrill4 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Barcena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. LOCATION The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). THE Societá Auonima di Miniere e di Alti Fourni, familiarly known as the " Elba Company," works the rich ore-deposits of the Island of Elba under a long-term contract with the Italian Government. The ore-deposits are scattered over the eastern and southeastern coast; but as those parts of the island are not well provided with ports, the blast-furnaces were built at Portoferraio, the principal town of the island, situated on the northern shore, and possessing a magnificent natural harbor where even vessels as large as the battleships of the Italian navy can comfortably anchor. In the selection of Portoferraio. the cost of transporting the iron-ore from the different mines to the blast-furnaces has been reduced to a minimum, and shelter has been provided for the Company's flotilla of tugs and barges, as well as for the steamers carrying coal and pig-iron. The whole plant, of which a general view is given in Fig. 1, comprises 1. A discharging-pier with unloading-cranes. The ore and coal are transported from this pier by means of an aerial cable-rail¬way to the coal- and ore-storage yards. This cable-railway is supported by an iron bridge extending from the pier to the shore and by a wooden trestle extending from the shore to the yards. , 2. Blast furnaces, two in number, with all the accessory appa¬ratus, such as blowing-engines, dry purifiers, Cowper hot-blast stoves, hoists, etc. 3. Coke-ovens, two batteries, with coal-bin, crushers and boilers. 4. Engine-house containing the blast-engines and the electric generating-station. 5. Pumping-plant. 6. Narrow-gauge railways.

Some physical as well as chemical aspects of the methods of dispersion of various corn starches and their derivatives are investigated and their effects as depressants in anionic silica flotation of iron ores ascertained. The adsorption behavior of starches on hematite and quartz is strongly affected by their molecular sizes as inferred from viscosity measurements. The implication of this behavior on flotation and flocculation is discussed. Mechanical treatment of causticized starch solutions is shown to reduce the starch requirements in flotation appreciably. Starches and starch products have been used as depressants for iron oxides both in amine flotation of siliceous gangue and in soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores. Cooke and his associates1,2,3,4 extensively studied the effects of certain starches and their derivatives in the amine flotation of iron ores at near-neutral pH and found that although most starches were good flocculants for hematite and de- pressed that mineral more or less selectively1,3 they did not flocculate quartz suspensions. Further, that replacement of active groups in corn starch modified its behavior as a flocculant for hematite or quartz suspensions1 and as an iron oxide depressant. Schulz and cooke2 showed that many starches and their derivatives, except aminoethyl starch, were abstracted more effectively by Brazilian hematite than by quartz and that the adsorption of a starch product was strongly dependent on pH and on the presence of calcium ion. In soap flotation of calcium-activated quartz, certain starches and their products have been used to depress iron oxides.5'6 The behavior of these substances in flotation appears at times to be at variance with those previously reported and especially with results obtained in the Mines Experiment Station laboratories. This is attributed, at least in part, to differences in flotation procedure and flowsheets and in the method of preparing the depressant. Most of the investigators referred to above, solubilized the starch products by autoclaving at 120°C. Others have used acid,7 alkali8 or oxidizing agents.9 In view of the limited knowledge of the depressing action of starches and their derivatives in iron ore flotation, particularly in soap flotation of calcium-activated silica at high alkalinity, an extensive study

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish, or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

THE production of lime by the burning or calcination of limestone, including all varieties from true dolomites and magnesian limestones to high-calcium types, continues as one of the essential basic industries. In 1937, a total of 4,124,165 tons of lime valued at approximately $30,091,000 was produced in the United States.1 The importance of any contribution to our knowledge on the mechanism of the lime-burning process is, therefore, obvious. The burning of limestone has been practiced since the earliest days of our civilization, and the literature on the various phases of the industry is voluminous. Calcination of the various types of limestone has been studied by many previous investigators, but some points require addi-tional research. Each occurrence of limestone provides an opportunity for specific investigation, because the characteristics of stones in different localities vary. Knibbs13 has given an excellent discussion of available data on the theory of lime and magnesia burning. The thermal dissociation of calcium carbonate has been studied more recently by Johnston,2 Smyth and Adams,3 Ralston et al.,4 Furnas,5 Potapenko,6 and Southard and Royster.7 As a result of these investigations the dissociation temperature at atmospheric pressure has been established as 894° to 898° C. The dissociation of dolomite and magnesite, although studied by several investigators, 4,6,8 still requires clarification by additional data. The calcination of limestone was studied for a twofold purpose: (1) to extend our information on the mechanism of the lime-burning process and (2) to standardize the conditions for calcination of high-calcium and dolomitic limestones for subsequent hydration tests on the lime.

The chloridizing mill of the Standard Reduction Co. is located about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Tintic branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western R. R. and 12 miles from the Tintic Standard mine. The daily capacity is 200 toss of a siliceous, low-grade, silver-lead ore from this property. It has operated continuously since it was started in January, 1921. The process consists essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid, the precipitation of silver on sponge copper and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. The precipitates are shipped to a smelter. Some of the general ideas involved are said to have been used by Augustin in England, in 1840. A number of textbooks treat of the subject, especially the chloridizing roast followed by a leach with sodium hyposulfite or amalgamation. The process was revived in this district by Theo. P. Holt, N. C. Christensen, the Bureau of Mines, and others. The Mining Law of New Pork, contained in Title XI., Chapter IX., Part One of the Revised Statutes, is as follows: Section 1. The following mines are, and shall be, the property of the people of this State in their right of sovereignty : (1.) All mines of gold and silver discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, within this State. (2.) All mines of other metals discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands owned by persons not being citizens of any of the United States. (3.) All mines of other metals discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon lands owned by a citizen of any of the United States, the ore of which, upon an average, shall contain less than two equal third parts in value of copper, tin, iron, and lead, or any of those metals. Sec. 2. All mines and all minerals and fossils discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands belonging to the people of this State, are, and shall be, the property of the people, subject to the provisions hereinafter made to encourage the discovery thereof. Sec. 3. All mines of whatever description, other than mines of gold and silver, discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands owned by a citizen of any of the United States, the ore of which, upon an average, shall contain two equal third parts or more, in value, of copper, tin, iron, and lead, or any of those metals, shall belong to the owner of such land. Sec. 4. Every person who shall make a discovery of any mine of gold or silver within this State, and the executors, administrators, or assigns of such persons, shall be exempted from paying to the people of this State any part of the ore, produce or profit of such mine for the term of twenty-one years, to be computed from the time of giving notice of such discovery, in the manner hereinafter directed. Sec. 5. No person discovering a mine of gold or silver within this State shall work the same until he gives notice thereof, by information in writing to the Secre-

This novel safety-lamp, which was first introduced in some of the German coal-mines in 1882, at once attracted general attention in the coal-districts of Europe. Objections which arose during the early stages of its use at the mines have gradually died away with the increase of experience in handling the lamp 011 the part of the miners, and the continual efforts to perfect it on the part of its inventors. Wolf's lamp has rapidly surpassed all its rivals, and has already a greater distribution on the Continent than any one of its older sisters. In the course of two and a half years, the manufacturers have sold 25,000 of the lamps, besides remodelling several thousand rapeseed-oil lamps. This great success, which of itself speaks loudly enough as to the superiority of the Wolf benzine-lamp, is corroborated by both official and private reports, which all agree in pronouncing this lamp the best yet brought forward. It was described in a paper by Mr. Eugene B. Wilson, read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in May, 1881,* in which its salient merits were briefly but clearly indicated. Every previous improvement of the original Davy lamp has been directed to one or more of the following main points: 1. Light of greater and more uniform intensity. 2. Freedom from smoke or soot, which clogs the gauze and other parts of the lamp. 3. A greater safety and sensitiveness in the presence of firedamp. 4. An illuminating material which, satisfying the foregoing conditions, should be also cheap. 5. A lock which could not be opened in the mine by the miner. 6. An arrangement for lighting without opening the lamp. 7. An arrangement for changing the size of the flame in the closed lamp, to supersede the picker, the danger from which is explained in Mr. Wilson's paper, already cited. It may safely be said that wolf's lamp was the first to secure all these objects. The adoption of benzine instead of rapeseed-oil (previonsly the best illuminant) has completely satisfied conditions 1, 2, 3, and 4. Benzine gives a much clearer, stronger, and more uni-
