As a raw material, prereduced pellets can be considered symptomatic of the quiet revolution taking place in the quality and grade of blast furnace burdens for the past decade. In 1954, the average analysis of ores from U.S. ranges in the Great Lakes area was 50.86% Fe (natural), 10.22% SiO2, and 10.90% moisture; ten years later, the average was 56.67% Fe (natural), 8.13% SiO2, and 6.17% moisture. The advance in Canada was even more pronounced in a lesser number of years. In 1957 the average product of Canadian ore-producing areas was 51.62% Fe (natural), 8.59% Si02, and 8.02% moisture; in 1964, the average grade was 59.59% Fe (natural), 6.27% SiO2, and 3.94% moisture.2 These dramatic data are testimony to the giant strides made in iron ore improvement, and the next logical step is prereduction. Prereduction can well be considered as a beneficiation step in which oxygen is the gangue. Since the ultimate objective of milling and smelting is iron metal, non-metallic constitutents in general, whether oxygen or silica, are contaminants. The past and continuing attack aimed at lowering the silica content of concentrates is succeeding. One need only thumb through the Grade Name listings of the American Iron Ore AssociationVo note that virtually all commercial pellets contain less than 8% silica, many are lower than 6%, and a few below 45%. With natural technical evolution, it is expected "many" rather than "few" will ultimately be in the last category and further mechanical concentration will have reached the point of diminishing returns. At this level, oxygen would constitute the only major diluent worthy of attack.

C. W. MERRILL*-Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably, a matter of vital interest.

After his return to San Francisco, Mr. Bain, in view of the importance of his paper and its discussion, kindly furnished it in full. The delay in its publication (since it was received in April last) has been due, partly to the circumstance that other contributions had meanwhile acquired the "right of way," and partly to the consideration that, the situation contemplated in Mr. Bain's paper having remained practically unchanged, the paper and its discussion would not lose force or timeliness by this lapse of time.-J. S.] No acute observer of public affairs can have failed to observe a growing disposition on the part of the public to change emphasis in government from political equality to social justice. When our own government was founded it was felt to be sufficient to secure to each individual the fullest possible freedom of opportunity, and such a scheme was excellently adapted to the rapid development of a large territory having a small population. As the number of people in a given area increases, there are more points of contact and conflict; each must move in a smaller orbit, and there must be more regulation. Germany is making faster progress in industry than is any other country. The principal reason is the insistence there on team-play. In Germany there are fewer multimillionaires and more socialists (spelled with either a big or little " S ") than in any other of the leading countries; but Germany wins trade and is steadily improving the conditions of life for her citizens. To some, the change from the freest individualism is welcome; to others it is intensely unacceptable. To this fundamental difference in view-point may be imputed much of the vigor with which the controversy regarding coal-lands has been waged. That present conditions in Alaskan coal-fields are extremely unsatisfactory is generally recognized, but there are wide dif-

Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

The engineers for whom it is written are those who, having glimpsed the formidable formulas and discussions of the geophysicists, give all publications on the subject a wide berth. For a few years now the geo-physicists have had a tendency to be ingrowing at their meetings, going deeper and deeper into theory and instrument construction, and forgetting to present the topics that would interest the practicing engineer who desires merely to know how geophysics can help him, not why.

A theoretical calculation of the electro-osmotic circulation of liquid in a rectangular micro-electro-phoresis cell was presented by Smoluchowski (1921) and Komagata (1933). According to their theories, the velocity of liquid changes with depth such that the velocity distribution may be represented by a symmetrical parabola in the cell. Their theories appear contrary to the results of our experiments which show that the velocity distribution curve is represented by a symmetrical parabola whose symmetrical axis is displaced from the center line of the cell. A similar phenomenon had been suggested by Lane and White in 1937 based on the latter's theory which seemingly was incomplete. By using methods of measuring electrophoretic velocities based on the above three theories, serious errors are obvious. We are thus proposing a unified theory for determining the electrophoretic velocity of mineral particles in a rectangular cell. The equations of Smoluchowski, Komagata and White can be derived from our theory as special cases. On the basis of our theory, we are proposing an improved method of determining the precise electrophoretic velocity of mineral particles based solely on the coefficients of the velocity distribution curve. In our experiments, this method gives satisfactory results. We determined the relation between the zeta-potential and pH value of suspension for several minerals.

I would like to make the following points in connection with the studies of the deformation of NiAl reported in the recent paper by Wasilewski, Butler, and Hanlon. 1) Much of their paper is concerned with demonstrating that slip occurs on either {110)(001) or {100)(001) systems. In their discussion they state "the existence of (001) as the basic slip direction can thus be considered established." This fact was established by the earlier studies of Ball and Smallman.32 Ball and Smallman also concluded that the slip plane was of the type (110) and they showed that cross slip or pencil glide on orthogonal (110) planes could produce macroscopic slip on planes of the (001) zones, e.g., (100). Wasilewski et al. refer to this paper by Ball and Smallman but not in connection with the slip system determinations. 2) Wasilewski et a!. eliminate the possibility of (111) slip in NiAl on dubious grounds. Their statement that ('the very high yield strengths of the (100) oriented crystals", in which (001) slip is constrained, "immediately ruled out the possibility of {110)(111) slip" cannot be accepted unequivocably; it would be reasonable if the crystals were completely brittle but they are not, as Wasilewski et al. and others33734 have shown. Their elimination of the possibility of (111) slip in a crystal compressed along [227] is misleading since there is no obvious reason why (111) slip should occur in a crystal of this orientation. In fact, from an analysis of the macroscopic surface markings on deformed (100) stoichiometric crystals, Pascoe and Newey34 have deduced that slip occurs on systems of the type {211)(111) and {321)(111). 3) Polycrystalline NiAl is known to undergo general deformati~n.Having emphasized that general deformation is impossible if only (100) slip occurs, it is a pity that Wasilewski et al. do not attempt to account for the disagreement between theory and their experimental results. Of course, (111) slip can provide the additional independent systems required for general deformation.

Differences in the electrical conductivities of copper powder sintered under reducing, selectively oxidizing, and neutral atmospheres are related to impurities in solution or as precipitated oxides. The precipitation of impurities as oxides during sintering in nitrogen is proposed for maximizing the conductivity of sintered copper. Conductivity equations for two-phase systems are summarized. Selected equations are applied to porous sintered copper and composite structures. A recent review of the influence of impurities on the electrical conductivity of copper by Gregory et al.1 emphasized that an impurity in solid solution has a much more pronounced effect on reducing the electrical conductivity than when present partly or wholly as a second phase. When impurities in solid solution can be precipitated as oxides, the copper is purified with respect to these elements and the conductivity is increased. Cast and wrought copper, therefore, frequently contain an intentional residual oxygen concentration to oxidize and precipitate impurities less noble than copper. Copper powders generally also contain impurities which can contribute to a reduction in the electrical conductivity of the sintered material. The most deleterious impurities commonly found in commercial copper powders which markedly decrease the electrical conductivity when in solid solution but which can be precipitated as oxides include iron, tin, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel. In addition to impurities, porosity in sintered copper also contributes to a reduction in the electrical conductivity. The work reported herein discusses the influence of impurities, sintering atmospheres, and porosity on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper. These are important factors for controlling the electrical conductivity of materials such as sintered copper electrical contacts. Several publications on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper and composite materials with random pores or obstacles have incorrectly considered the conductivity to be proportional to the volume fraction of conducting material. However, analyses and equations have been proposed, the earliest of which is perhaps Lord Raleigh's of 1892,' which more accurately describe the conductivity of two-phase systems. These equations which in many cases allow one to closely estimate the electrical conductivity of porous sintered materials and two-phase composites will be reviewed and related to the measured electrical conductivity of sintered copper, copper-graphite. and Ag-W composites. INFLUENCE OF IMPURITIES AND OXIDIZING, REDUCING, AND NEUTRAL ATMOSPHERES Zone-Melted and Leveled Copper. The electrical conductivities of an electrolytic copper and a lower-purity compacting grade of copper powder after consecutive treatments in reducing or selectively oxidizing atmospheres are compared in Fig. 1. The powder and drillings from the electrolytic copper ingot were melted and solidified in a graphite crucible under hydrogen. The vertical zone leveling technique of multiple passes in opposite directions was used to obtain a uniform distribution of impurities. The electrical conductivity was measured on machined specimens 3 by 0.10 in. diam of the zone-leveled material and after the same specimens were consecutively treated as follows: 1) heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr; 2) heating in air in a sealed tube so that 0.04 pct 0 was introduced; heating was started at 1000°F for 1 hr and continued at 1800°F for 8 hr; the stepwise diffusion treatment was used to avoid loss of copper due to evaporation of copper oxide at higher temperatures; and 3) final heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr. A L&N Kelvin Bridge, type 4306, and a test fixture with knife edges 2 in. apart were used to measure the room-temperature conductivity with an estimated accuracy of ±0.5 pct. In all cases the conductivity of the electrolytic copper was approximately 100 pct of IACS. The conductivity of the impure copper was 80 pct of IACS both in the cast state and after heating in hydrogen. However, after the heating in air, the conductivity of the impure material was 100 pct IACS. After again heating in hydrogen, the electrical conductivity decreased to 60 pct of IACS. This decrease is attributed both to the dissolution of impurities and observed intergranular cracks due to the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittle-ment in copper. These data show that the electrical conductivity of commercial copper as represented by a compacting type powder can be increased significantly by the precipitation of impurities as oxides through heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere. Sintered Copper Powder. A commercial compacting type of copper powder pressed to various densities was sintered either in nitrogen, dissociated ammonia, or dissociated ammonia followed by a selectively oxidizing atmosphere of air in sealed Vycor tubes so that 0.06 pct O was added to the material. The electrical conductivity was measured perpendicular to the pressing direction on as-sintered specimens of approximately 3 by 0.25 by 0.15 in. The present plans for the Petroleum Division of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers provide for two principal meetings in the year 1928. The first will be at Tulsa, Okla., in September or October, 1928, with the exact date largely dependent upon the date of the .International Petroleum Exposition. The officers wish to hold the meeting at the same time as the Exposition in order that members of the Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. may have the advantage of attending both meetings at the same time. It is planned that this meeting will be devoted largely to petroleum production engineering problems. A tentative outline of subjects to be discussed is as follows: 1. Repressuring New Oil Fields, and naturally in conjunction with this falls Repressuring of Old Fields. 2. Air or Gas Lift. 3. Flow Strings in New Wells. 4. Deep Drilling Technique. It is also planned to have at this meeting a general paper relating to Supply and Demand of Petroleum and its Products. The second meeting is planned for February, 1929, in New York at the same time as the annual meeting of the Institute. Special details have not been carried very far on this meeting, although it is expected the program will cover technical problems in relation to production and refining of crude oil, as well as 1928 development in foreign fields and the United States. It is planned during 1928 to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in an attempt to compile a set of definitions on petroleum engineering. These would be of value to the petroleum engineering profession, in order to better standardize various terms used in discussion of current problems. It has also been suggested that the Petroleum Division study certain problems in which research work is needed by the petroleum industry and outline certain definite programs that could be carried out by the Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey, as a follow-up to

9.5-1. Introduction. The use of pipelines to transport solids has been successfully accomplished with many different materials. One of the oldest applications is the dredging and placing of hydraulic fill. Many installations have been made and operated for long periods of time with excellent dependability, low operating cost, and low maintenance. It is not the aim of this chapter to give the engineer the answers from which to design a pipeline, but rather to supply helpful information from which to start the project. There are several phases of solids pipelining which as yet have not lent themselves to quick engineering answers. Investigations have been carried on by many, with several theories advanced by the various investigators. In recent years certain notable theoretical advances in hydraulic transportation have been achieved. Vertical transport, using balanced "leg" operation, now appears competitive with other forms of vertical transportation. In addition, horizontal transport utilizing capsules has been proven experimentally to be attractive because of lower pressure drop than the conventional methods of solid transport in fluid media. With the aid of the computer, the laborious calculations associated with pumping calculations have been greatly simplified; and with this tool the pipeline engineers of the future will undoubtedly be able to develop a more comprehensive understanding of solids-fluid transport. 9.5-2. Theory. There have been many excellent studies made and information is available in the literature, but a general comprehensive theory of pipeline transportation of solids has not been advanced. The existing flow theories will give approximations for minimum and optimum flow velocities, friction head losses, energy requirements, and pump and pipe size The principles of dynamic similarity and scaling laws are well understood for the flow of pure liquids. There are no firm methods of scaling slurry pipelines of small diameter to larger diameters except for a few empirical.

Diamond drilling has advanced and expanded during the past few yean. Along with this increase there has been a marked trend to rely more and more upon drilling for the outlining of ore for reserve purposes. This is especially true underground, where men have not been available for opening up ore by crosscuts, drifts and raises. During the recent heavy call upon known ore reserves, more drilling has been done for exploration and it has become expedient to drill longer lateral holes from underground and deeper holes both from surface and from exploration headings in the mines. Furthermore, these deeper holes have to be drilled closely enough to warrant calculation of "probable" if not "proven" ore, from the results obtained therefrom. Interpretation of diamond-drill results has become more precise and reliable with the growing knowledge and understanding of the geologic structures that control the geometry of ore distribution, and this has broadened the field of usefulness of the drill. All of this has created a necessity and a demand for more accurate control of the hole as to direction, a more precise and reliable method of surveying for position, and a need for better and more complete core recovery, as well as larger cores, to provide an adequate sample. At depth the control becomes more difficult and, at the same time, more important. Control A close study of drilling in various parts of the world for a period of more than 20 years has brought to light one definite rule, practically invariable; namely, that diamond-drill holes tend to deviate into a position normal to any structure existing in the rocks, such as bedding, schistosity, gneissosity, or even parting or jointing— even if the hole is started at almost any angle other than parallel with the structure. It also appears that the better developed the structure is, the more quickly will the hole get into a position perpendicular to it. It has often been said that there is a tendency for holes to "drift" in the direction of rotation. This is obviously untrue, for in a vertical hole the measure of deviation would depend upon the azimuth chosen as zero, and there is an infinite number of choices. It has been proved. however, that in homogeneous rocks there is a tendency for the hole to corkscrew, and that the direction of the spiral is the same as the direction of rotation. This may account for the belief that holes drift in that direction. Some tests have been made using right-hand and left-hand rods, and these show that no matter what the direction of rotation the hole will swing into a position perpendicular to the structure. Methods of Control The foregoing empirical rule may be used as an indirect method of control. INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. This paper outlines the research and development of a process to treat flotation tailings from the Darwin mill in lnyo County, California. A flowsheet was developed incorporating an agglomerated heap leach process using sodium cyanide to extract the silver values. Agglomeration was the key to developing this resource as the mill tailings averaged only 13% plus 100 mesh. Percolation through the heap would have been impossible without agglomeration to improve the permeability. The various tests that went into this research program are described with particular emphasis on the agglomeration techniques developed at the Anaconda Minerals Research Center. Start up and operation are discussed.

The constitution of the simple copper-zinc base alloy is still a matter of dispute in spite of the fact that the copper-zinc series is one of the oldest industrially important groups of alloys, and has received thc carly co~l+itlcl-ntio11 of scirntific rcsc:trch. wben a displacement front encounters an isolated permeability heterogeneity, it will be perturbed. The details of this perturbation will depend on the beterogeneity size and shape, the Permeability contrast, and the mobility ratio. This paper deals with the displacement front behavior for one, simple, mathematically tractable model: a circular permeability discontinuity and unit mobility ratio. The progress of an initially planar front is shown for four permeability contrasts: k2/k1 = 0, 5/2, 2, m. The front distortion is more pronounced than streamline and isopotential distortion and it approaches a constant shape downstream from the discontinuity. INTRODUCTION The impact of reservoir heterogeneities on oil displacing processes depends upon the variation of the heterogeneous property (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution), and the inherent stability of the displacement mechanism.l The interplay of these factors plus the impracticability, if not impossibility, of describing a natural rock system in any detail makes exact displacement front movements difficult to determine. It is useful, however, to be able to qualitatively visualize what heterogeneities will do to a displacement front. In this respect certain simple models that can be treated analytically are of value. The following analysis will show the displacement front behavior for one such model. MODEL DESCRIPTION The flow field is two-dimensional and infinite in extent. The fluid flow is single phase, steady state and unidirectional at x, y = 2 m, or before insertion of the discontinuity. A circular permea- bility discontinuity is placed at the origin. Porosity and thickness are the same within and exterior to the heterogeneity. This is exactly the same model that was used by Greenkorn et al. to check analytically Streamlines as determined by Heie-Shaw flow models and finite difference computer techniques.2 FRONT POSITION CALCULATIONS The results of displacement front calculations are presented in Figs. 1 through 4 for four different permeability contrasts: k2/kl = O, %, 2, m. The times corresponding to the front locations are the Same for the 0 and cases! and for the 1/2 and 2 cases. The metric system is now in official use in the Republic of Mexico, having been adopted by the Government in the year 1862. Athough it is used to compute all customs and other duties to be paid to the General Government, in the measurement of public and private lands arid in all freight and other transactions on the railroads, and is taught exclusively in the public schools, the system has made but slight head way among the people,and has not succeeded in displacing the old-time weights and measures, which are still used in ordinary commerce. The latter were founded on old Spanish models, but, owing to the inexactness of the first standards and to subsequent changes, differ at present very widely from their originals. As to local modifications, weights are the same all over the Republic, but measures of the same name differ greatly in capacity in different States, and even in neighboring towns. The value in the metric system here assigned to each denomination of the old weights and measures is that fixed by the Mexican Government at the time of the adoption of the metric system. The equivalents in American weights and measures were calculated by me from data found in Trautwine's Pocket-Book as to the comparison between the French and American weights and measures, and are believed to be correct. I shall be thankful for early notice of any error that may be detected, that it may be corrected before the final publication of this paper in the Transactions. Linear Measures. Kilometers. Introduction. OF the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the quantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted', the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide-plant than that of being economical and convenient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solution, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to solids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge ; -that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of 180- or 400-mesh size, should, be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertained to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

THE agreement of September, 1922, between the anthracite operators and the United Mine Workers of America, which followed the 54.5 months strike during the summer of that year, contained the following provision : The parties unite in a recommendation to Congress that legislation be forthwith enacted creating a separate anthracite coal commission with authority to investigate and report promptly on every phase of the industry and the parties hereby ask the President to request the enactment by Congress of the recommended legislation. The continuance of production after Aug. 31, 1923, shall be upon such terms as the parties may agree-upon in the light of the report of the Commission.

On the Manchuria. SOMEWHAT fatigued with excess of enjoyment and strenuous continuity of movement on the trip to and through California, the members and guests of the Institute party embarked Tuesday, Oct. 17, on the Pacific Mail S. S. Manchuria for a further journey to and through Japan. The good ship displayed the flag of the Institute (blue cross-hammers on a white ground), together with the Stars and Stripes and the ensign of the company. Uninterrupted fair weather and smooth water attended the passage to Honolulu. The Manchuria proved herself most commodious, comfortable and clean ("A sweeter steamship never sailed," quoth President Hunt) ; Captain Dixon and his officers were most agreeable, as well as most efficient; the passenger list comprised many congenial people besides ourselves-among them a score of missionary folk, and also Mr. M. H. de Young, Vice-President of the Panama
