In a previous paper,1 an experimental study of nitrogen dissolved in a cold-rolled ad heat-treated, low-carbon steel at 300° to 450°C yielded the equilibrium solubility relations and the concentrations of the two types of deject sites involved. In this paper, the probable identities of the defects that absorb nitrogen are restricted from the available evidence to screw dislocatioms for B sites, and to either micro crack surfaces or edge In a previous paper.' we reported an experimental study of the excess nitrogen solubility in a low-carbon steel produced by a combination of plastic deformation and nonrecrystallizing heat treatment. The concentrations of the defect sites that absorb the excess nitrogen were measured in terms of their capacities for nitrogen. Also measured were the equilibria of nitrogen distribution among the sites. Several problems and questions arise from these measurements. We should like a physical identifi- dislocations for A sites. The concentrations of these defects in experimental steel specimens are estimated from the concentrations of defect sites. finally, the influence of chemical composition upon the nitrogen-trapping defects—the relative numbers generated in deformation, the relative numbers surviving as temperature is raised, the apparent numbers observed, and the distribution equilibria-is discussed. cation of the defects involved and of the two kinds of nitrogen-absorbing sites, called A and B types, upon those defects; the concentrations of the defects themselves could then be computed. We should also like to know how exclusively the findings apply to the "X steel" used in the experiments and to what extent they apply to cold-rolled steel given no subsequent treatment. By considering the data already given, together with results from a few specific tests which will be reported as they are invoked, we are able to eliminate some interpretations altogether and to secure an acceptable though limited interpretation from among the remaining possibilities.

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent, investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

As an example of nonmetallic mineral flotation, the separation of several pegmatite minerals will be discussed in considerable detail, from both the laboratory-testing and plant-operation standpoints. The pegmatites have been chosen to illustrate the practicality of the selective separations of the minerals in a complex nonmetallic ore and, in so doing, to set forth a summation of the flotation art and technology which is applicable in part to the beneficiation of several less complex nonmetallic ores. In addition, a brief summary of descriptions of other nonnietallic mineral flowsheets and separations is included. Some of the industrial minerals now being concentrated by froth flotation methods commercially, or in the laboratory, are listed in Table 1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS There are two classes of chemicals that are normally utilized as collectors in froth flotation separations of nonmetallic minerals. These are defined as anionic and cationic and are typified by the fatty acids and amines, respectively. The fatty acids are selective to those minerals that have a high concentration of positive surface charges, such as the various calcium minerals typified by calcite, phosphate rock, and fluorspar. The amines are selective to those minerals with a high concentration of negative surface charges, such as silica sand and silicates. It should be noted, however, that by using various inorganic chemicals, a new or synthetic surface can be placed on specific minerals which produces different characteristics, thereby reversing the flotation reagent required for separation. The polar end of the collector attaches to the mineral surface either by chemical or physical adsorption; the nonpolar unreactive end is oriented away from the mineral surface. The result is a hydrophobic coating at the mineral surface which causes attachment to air bubbles. It is this surface condition that permits the floating of minerals which normally sink in water. MANY fires have occurred in the mines of Butte in recent years, and while all have been of a serious nature, simply because they were mine fires, six of them have been especially dangerous in respect to loss of life and property, and the expense of extinguishing or controlling them. It is not my intention to discuss the relative merits of methods used in fighting these different fires because the conditions under which they occurred varied in each case, and it was not always advisable to expend the large sum of money necessary to actually extinguish them if they could he bulk-headed off from the rest of the mine. It is needless to say that everything possible has been done to check all fires at the beginning, but without success in some cases; and it has then become necessary to bulkhead all connections to them, in which state several now exist. The mine fires of Butte, or fires in any mine, may be divided into two classes, namely: Those occurring in accessible workings, and those occurring in inaccessible workings; because these two conditions govern to the greatest extent the methods of fighting fires. Accessibility and in-accessibility in the case of mine fires concern not only new open workings and old closed workings, respectively, but also the condition of the ventilation in and about those places. When a fire is accessible at the start it should not be difficult to confine it to a small area and extinguish it in a relatively short time, but when it is impossible to actually reach a fire in old filled, abandoned workings, or there is no opening by which the gases may be conducted away from the fire zone, then the time consumed in changing those conditions permits the fire to increase to such an extent that it is a long, hard fight to overcome it.

It was found that Al-A13Ni could be readily cold rolled perpendicular to but not parallel to the whiskers. Reductions of more than 98 pct were achieved without cracking by rolling perpendicular to the whiskers, whereas extensive edge cracking was noted after only 15 pct reduction when rolling parallel to the whiskers. The longitudinal and transverse tensile strengths were nearly doubled, and the longitudinal yield strength more than tripled by cold rolling 50 pct in a direction perpendicular to the whiskers. The whiskers exhibited some waviness (elastic bending) as a result of cold rolling, but at very high reductions (greater than 75 pct) whisker fracture and misalignment became significant. A fine dislocation substructure in the matrix consisting of cells attached to the whiskers was pro -duced by cold rolling. Most of- the substructure was readily removed by a 1-hr anneal at 500°C. Cold rolling was found to substantially reduce the thermal stability of the microstructure at 610°C but did not affect the stability at 500°C. FIBER and whisker reinforced composite materials promise significant improvements in properties over conventional materials. Before they find wide use, however, it will be necessary to understand the response of these highly anisotropic materials to common metalworking processes. Most of the nonmetal-lic fiber reinforced materials have very low elongations (a few pct or less) in the direction of fiber alignment. Thus, metalworking techniques such as rolling and forging would not be as broadly applicable to these materials. This investigation was initiated to determine how a composite system consisting of Al3Ni whisker reinforced aluminum responded to rolling, what changes in the microstructure occurred, and the effect of deformation on the mechanical properties. The composite material studied was produced by unidirectional solidification of the A1-Al3Ni eutectic alloy'-7 and consisted of 10 pct by volume of aligned whiskers of Alai in a matrix of aluminum. It should be pointed out that this system is not representative of all composite materials, and the results will therefore not be universally applicable. The A1-Al3Ni system is characterized by: 1) A strong fiber-matrix interfacial bond 2) A ductile matrix 3) A sufficiently low fiber content to allow significant plastic flow between fibers 4) Strong, completely elastic whiskers (tensile strength 400,000 psi, elastic modulus = 20 X 106 psi.1 These factors allow the material to be readily rolled perpendicular to the fibers. If the fiber-matrix bond were not strong, such a weak interface could fail during rolling. A measure of the ability of a composite to be rolled in the transverse direction can be obtained from noting the transverse tensile behavior. In the case of Al-Al3Ni,2 there is considerable ductility (15 to 30 pct). In the case of boron filament reinforced aluminum, for example, the transverse elongation is less than 1 pct,8 and the material could probably not be cold rolled as readily in that direction. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 3-in. diam ingots of A1-A13Ni eutectic were unidi-rectionally solidified in graphite crucibles. The starting materials consisted of 99.99+ pct pure nickel and aluminum, and the pure eutectic ingots were made with 6.2 wt pct Ni. The unidirectional solidification process (described in detail elsewhere1-3) consists of preparing a master heat of eutectic composition, remelting, and withdrawing the ingot vertically downward through the heat source at a controlled rate so that plane front solidification proceeds upward at a constant velocity. The resulting microstructure consists of 10 pct by volume of whiskers of very high aspect (length to diameter) ratio. The fiber lengths have not been measured because of the difficulty of detecting fiber ends9 but exceeds 104. There is some possibility that the fibers may be continuous within one grain. Flat sheet specimens 2¾ in. sq and approximately 0.2 in. thick containing whiskers parallel to the plane of the sheet and to one edge were used for this study. A1-A13Ni exhibits either a rod-like (high solidification rates) or a blade-like (low solidification rates) whisker morphology,1,3 and both types were studied. Rolling was accomplished using a two-high rolling mill at a speed of approximately 10 fpm. The rolling direction was either parallel to or perpendicular to the direction of growth (direction of whisker alignment). Reductions of from 0.002 to 0.03 in. per pass were used with the most common value being 0.005 in. per pass. Cold rolling of Al-Al3Ni to more than 98 pct reduction in thickness was accomplished with no intermediate anneals. In addition. a series of speci-mens was cold rolled 97 pct with a 1-hr, 500°C anneal in air after each 50 pet reduction. Tensile testing was accomplished using a Tinius-lsen four screw testing machine. A discussion of laboratory procedures used to determine pellet quality and to simulate handling and firing conditions. Strength-temperature relationships in pelletizing; effect of chemical additives on agglomeration; and crushing, abrasion, and impact resistance of the pelletized products are discussed with respect to five different iron ore concentrates. IN most routine experimental work on products and processes, method:; of operation and product evaluation are established from accurately controlled laboratory tests. With particular emphasis on the pelletization of fine iron ore concentrates, standardized procedures of laboratory production and product testing have been established at Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Research Laboratory at Ishpeming, Mich. A program of this nature was used for investigating the agglomeration characteristics of various iron ore concentrates. The factors which control the process were studied and subsequently controlled for these investigations. Pelletizing as applied to iron ore agglomeration involves the preparation of spheroidal masses from a fine moist concentrate, followed by high-tempera-ture firing to produce a final product. The preparation of moist spherorids is generally designated as balling. This produces the so-called green pellets or balls. After, these have been fired they are called pellets. Balling is accomplished by rolling moist concentrates in a revolving drum until small spheroids form by a snow-balling action. These balls are then heated in a shaft furnace, or a modification of this device, to a temperature high enough to cause agglomeration within the individual balls while they descend countercurrent to hot oxidizing gases. By this process the lour strength balls are converted through various chemical and physical-chemical processes into hard pellets. With correct balling and firing, the pellets are strong, resist abrasive action and handling treatments, and provide a suitable blast furnace and open hearth feed. In 1950 Tigerschiold and Ilmoni developed a working hypothesis to explain the formation and stability of green pellets.' Their work was presented on the basis of geologists' discoveries concerning the soil-water system and C. V. Firth's early postulates of green pellet formation.' Fundamental reactions oc-curing within fired pellets have been described by Cooke and Ban, who showed the microstructure changes caused by different firing temperatures." All these investigators have provided scientific clarifications of agglomeration by the pelletizing process and have opened avenues for greater development. Mineral grain growth and ceramic bond formation are the two basic phenomena imparting coherency to particles within a fired pellet of iron ore. Each of these is established by the transfer of thermal energy to the mineral particles. Grain growth mechanisms are chiefly physical reactions wherein smaller particles consolidate into larger ones, with resulting decrease in surface energy conforming with the second law of thermodynamics. Ceramic bond formation is a chemical reaction usually between basic and acid metallic oxides of the gangue and ore minerals. CaO, MgO, A1203, and FeO of Fe3O4, react in varying proportions with SiO, or Fe2O3, to form a great series of compounds or amorphous solid solutions. These product bond iron mineral particles together by a bridging action or by direct reaction with the surfaces of the particles. The result of the grain growth-ceramic bond formations is a consolidated, coherent compact of gangue and iron minerals formerly held together by much weaker bonds of interstitial water and forces common to dry, unconsolidated particles.4 With respect to iron ore agglomeration, these high temperature bonding reactions have been described by Schwartz, who referred to the bonds in sinters," and by Cooke and Ban, who referred to the bonds in fired pellets." THE cost of hoisting with electricity in deep mines is a matter about which little information has been published. This paper makes a detailed study of such costs and presents the information in a series of curves. In particular the curves show the cost of hoisting ore from depths varying from 500 to 7000 ft. vertical with the shaft at 70º incline for the double cylindroconical and double cylindrical drums, the hoists operating balanced, using Ward Leonard and Ilgner-Ward Leonard control, and designed for most economical operation from each depth. Operation with the double cylindrical drum is expanded to cover hoisting from 2000 to 5000 ft. using equipment designed for 5000 ft. and from 4000 to 7000 ft. using equipment designed for 7000 ft. Additional curves are included to show the ratings of the necessary hoist motors, energy input per hoisting cycle and size of flywheel in tons for complete equalization when the Ilgner-Ward Leonard system is used, also hoisting efficiency. The duty imposed on a mine-hoist motor fluctuates between wide limits during a cycle of operation. The demand on the motor may vary from a large horsepower value near the beginning of the cycle to a small or a negative demand near the end of the cycle. Such factors as tonnage to be raised per hour, depth of shaft, and balanced or unbalanced operation have such a marked effect on the operating cycle and vary to such an extent for different mines that no set of rules can be formulated for quickly determining the size of the motor required. The duty cycle from which the motor rating is derived must be determined for each case according to the conditions of the proposed hoisting operations. The motor torque required at the cardinal points of the duty cycle is determined from the moment or torque in pound-feet necessary to raise and lower the load and ropes, accelerate and retard the load, ropes, drum, etc. The torque diagram depends largely upon the type of drum. Two different types of drums, if used on exactly the same duty cycles, may have widely different peak demands and capacities of hoist motors. THERE are a number of different types of power plants. Some use coal to generate steam, others use oil or gas either in the form of steam or internal combustion equipment, while still others avail themselves of water power as a source of energy. A general comparison of the relative power production with different sources of energy in the United States, for several different years is set up in Table 1. This table shows that coal was used to generate 85.6 per cent of the total heat power requirements of 1909, and only 59.2 per cent of the 1930 requirements. The increasing proportion of modern heat energy generated by the use of fuel other than coal is apparent. If coal is to maintain its importance as a source of heat energy, the necessity for its improved perform-ance, in which preparation plays an -important part, cannot be stressed too strongly.

The transient pressure behavior of a well which produces a single compressible fluid through a singte-plane wrticat fracture has been investigated mathematically. The fracture is assumed to possess infinite flow capacity, to be of limited mdial extent, and' to penetrate the producing formation completely in the vertical direction. Previous studies of vertically fractured wells have been concerned primarily with production rate performance or semisteady-state pressure behavior. This study was undertaken to ascertain the influence of vertical fractures on transient pressure tests such as pressure build-ups and flow tests. In a vertically fractured system, flow in the region nearest the fracture is practically linear, whereas farther away from the fracture essentially radial flow prevails. Thus, transient pressure analyses based on radial flow theory are somewhat inaccurate. As fracture penetration increases radially, kh values calcutated from pressure build-up and flow test curves become increasingly larger than true values. Failure to consider the effect of fracture penetration also introduces inaccuracies into the catculation of fracture length from the apparent skin factor and into the determination of average reservoir pressure. If the total length of the fracture is 20 per cent, or greater, of the drainage radius of the well, corrections must be made to pressure build-up and flow test results. Methods for correcting such results are discussed in this paper. For wells with prefracturing pressure build-up or flow test data, it is possible to estimate fracture length by comparison with postfracturing build-up or flow test results. In new wells or wells without prefracturing build-up or flow test data, fracture length must be estimated to correct the values obtained from analysis of pressure tests after fracturing. Fracturing efficiency calculations should be made whenever possible to provide an estimate of fracture length. Tables of the dimensionless pressure drop as a function of time and fracture penetration are included in this paper. Using these values should permit analysis of other types of transient pressure behavior in vertically fractured wells. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing has been used quite successfully for over a decade as a completion and stimulation technique in oil and gas wells completed in low-permeability reservoirs During this period a considerable amount of theory has evolved on the performance of hydraulically fractured reservoirs and on more efficient means of artificial fracturing. Although theory has been developed, no rigorous investigation has been made of pressure build-up and flow test behavior in such wells. Prats et al.1 first discussed the performance of vertically fractured reservoirs for the case of a compressible fluid. Their work was primarily concerned with production performance at constant flowing pressure. These authors also considered large-time (semisteady-state) constant production rate behavior for vertically fractured wells; however, transient pressure behavior at constant rate was not investigated. McGuire and Sikora10 and Dyes, Kemp, and Caudle2 employed an electrical analog to investigate the influence of artificial vertical fractures on well productivity and pressure build-up. They found that fractures which extend beyond 15 per cent of the drainage radius away from the well alter the position and slope of the straight-line portion of the build-up curve. They concluded that these effects must be considered both in the determination of the effective permeability of the formation and in any calculations of final build-up pressure. Although these authors did not undertake an exhaustive study of the influence of vertical fractures on pressure build-up performance, their limited results were quite interesting from the standpoint of the effects they demonstrated. In a more recent paper, Scott- reported the results of an investigation of the effect of vertical fractures on pressure behavior, which was conducted with a heat flow model. Scott's results appear to be consistent with those reported in Refs. 1 and 2. However, the effects of different fracture lengths on performance were not investigated. Pressure build-ups and transient flow tests are among the most diagnostic tools available to the reservoir engineer or production engineer. Since a very high percentage of present-day well completions incorporate the hydraulic fracturing technique, a definite need exists for information on the effect of fractures on transient pressure performance. For these reasons we have undertaken a rigorous study of pressure build-up and flow test behavior in vertically fractured reservoirs. IN recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. [ ] The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing i8 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic 15-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wettability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS The maximum liquidus temperature of a solder is determined by the particular application involved and the temperature that can be obtained by the source of heat.

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10 % lead and 11.06 % zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

GRAIN boundary stress relaxation has been the subject of several investigations in recent years, but as yet the phenomenon is not well understood. One of the major difficulties has been the lack of a sufficient amount of data with which to evaluate any proposed mechanism. Little information is available on the effect of small amounts of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation. It is with this important phase of the problem that this investigation is concerned. The influence of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation has been recently investigated in copper by Pearson: and in aluminum by Dorn et al.' Pearson studied the effect of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic on the relaxation peak of OFHC copper.* The pure OFHC copper decreased the peak intensity and a second peak appeared at a higher temperature. This latter peak was termed the alloy grain boundary peak. At the lowest binary concentration studied, approximately 1 atomic pct, the primary peak was almost completely obliterated. Pearson found that the activation energy calculated from the alloy grain boundary peak for all solutes, irrespective of the concentration, was 44,000 cal per mol. Pearson concluded that the increase in activation energy from 33 to 44 kcal per mol is not continuous but abruptly changes from the lower to the higher value. As no attempt was made to investigate the intermediate range of concentration and hence calculate the possible variation of the activation energy for the initial grain boundary peak, this conclusion is hardly valid. In contrast to these results, Dorn et al. studied the effect of zinc, silver, copper, germanium, and magnesium on the grain boundary stress relaxation of aluminum. No change in the energy of activation was observed for binary alloys of the flrst four solutes, but a linear increase was found for increasing concentration of magnesium. Saturation was not found up to the maximum of 1.6 atomic pct. The energies of activation were obtained by plotting the horizontal displacement of the dynamic modulus curve vs temperature for two vibrational frequencies. As the modulus is proportional to the square of the frequency, this requires the measurement of the torsional frequency over a range of temperature. IRon-oRe deposits in the Philippine Islands became the subject of official record as early as 1664. Undoubtedly iron ore was known and recognized by the Filipinos long before the earliest Spanish records. It is even possible that the Filipino practice of smelting iron ore is, like the native copper smelting, older than the Spanish conquest of the islands. The first records have to do with the magnetite-hematite ores near the towns of Santa Inez and Bosoboso in Rizal Province, from 15 to 20 miles east of Manila. The magnetite-hematite ores of Bulacan were exploited in 1783. Similar ores near the town of Mambulao in Camarines Province yielded a number of specimens to be exhibited in Spain in 1834. With the exception, then, of the lateritic iron ores on the eastern coast of northern Surigao, the true nature of which was not recognized until 1914, the important iron-ore deposits of the Philippines had all been discovered before the islands came under the dominion of the United States. Indeed, in the Spanish documents relating to the history of iron mining are statements which, if their accuracy be not questioned, leave us in the Philippines today with much less iron ore than the Spaniards found. To quote, for example, a report submitted to the Superior Government in Spain in 1835 by one of its emissaries, Don Lorenzo Calvo: "The Philippine Islands, most excellent Sir, possess iron and exhibit it in nearly every known mineralogical combination, and in such abundance that the cordillera of the island of Luzon, from Montufar Point in San Bernardino Straits to Cape Bojeador, is composed of no other mineral than iron, its ranges, of the third order, being in content and structure totally iron of the best quality, the more valuable in that its combinations are such as to facilitate its fusion and to render its redaction to metal simple." Today, however, it is recognized that the iron-ore deposits in the Eastern Cordillera of Luzon constitute, not a continuous belt, but a series of widely separated deposits, including a half dozen orebodies within a distance of 10 miles in Bulacan Province, a single outcrop at Santa Inez, Rizal Province, farther south, and three deposits around

Research and Development, once considered a luxury item only for well-heeled companies, has in the last two decades come into its own as a vital contributor to the fortunes of electronic, automotive, chemical and aerospace firms. In terms of money and talent poured into research, the mining industry is still far behind those industries. Although the U.S. Bureau of Mines, plus various mining and manufacturing firms and universities have made notable contributions to mining technology, the historical pattern of mining R&D shows a heavy reliance on the results of research in other industries. It is difficult to tell whether this pattern will change significantly in the future, but there is evidence of a growing awareness by mining officials that greater R&D efforts are going to be required not only to meet the nebulous demands of tomorrow's world but to meet the ever-present, mounting pressures being generated by "intra-metals" and "inter-materials" competition.

Irradiated uranium containing 635 ppm of carbon, mostly in the form of UC precipitates, was annealed at temperatures from 650" to 900°C under hydrostatic pressures of 0 to 1000 bars. Postirradiation examination revealed that the carbide particles are not stable in the r phase of irradiated material but are stable in unirradiated material annealed under identical conditions. The degree of carbide dissolution appears to be connected with the fission product concentration and independent of annealing pressure. THIS paper describes the change in appearance of carbide particles in irradiated uranium after the uranium has been postirradiation-annealed. It has been proposed by several investigators&apos;-5 that fission gas-induced swelling in irradiated uranium may be reduced by incorporating a fine dispersion of second-phase particles into the metal. Because of the low solubility of carbon in uranium6 and the apparent stability of UC precipitates at high temperatures,6-8 this system has received some attention. The stability of UC particles to low-temperature irradiation has been demonstrated many times, as well as their stability during postirradiation anneals in the high a or B phases.9 Unirradiated uranium containing UC particles has been annealed high in the r phase, and the solubility of carbon was found to be only -115 ppm at 1050ºC.6 Vacuum annealing of irradiated uranium to the same temperature produces a spongelike sample, due to the formation and growth of fission gas bubbles."14 This highly disrupted lattice has made any determination of the stability of UC at these temperatures impossible. Nevertheless, it has always been tacitly assumed that the UC particles were still present. Recently, postirradiation, high pressure-high temperature tests have been performed on irradiated uranium containing a secondary phase of UC. 14 Examination of these samples after 100-hr, 900°C tests revealed that the carbides are not stable, and the results of these tests are presented here. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples, high-pressure equipment, and subsequent analytical techniques are the same as those described elsewhere.14,15 Briefly, cylindrical samples of commercial-purity uranium that had been irradiated at <350°C to 0.37 at. pct B.U. were subjected to 90O°C, 100-hr anneals in NaK at pressures ranging

The year 1938 was the most active and successful in the history of the oil industry in southern Louisiana. Drilling showed a 16 per cent increase over that of 1937, with a total of 538 wells drilled, which yielded 315 oil wells, 19 distillate wells, 4 gas wells and 200 dry holes. Nineteen new fields were discovered during the year, all but three of which were completed by plugging back to sands previously drilled through. Electrical logging played a large part in these new discoveries as well as in the discovery of new sands during routine development of fields. Fourteen of the new discoveries produced oil, and five produced only gas and distillate. Southern Louisiana continues to lead the world in depth of drilling, which is in part due to the great thickness of comparatively young deltaic sediments near the coast and the existence of numerous sands. The present development is rather evenly distributed over a coastal strip 100 miles wide. New Fields North Tepetate, Acadia Parish.—Atlantic Refining Company&apos;s No. 1 Klumpp was completed for a new field through perforations from 7960 to 7970 ft. The initial production was 65 bbl. of 54" gravity distillate and 4 million cubic feet of gas daily through a 1/4-in. choke with tubing pressure of 2850 Ib. and casing pressure of 2930 lb. The well is in see. 12, 7 S., 2 W., just north of Tepetate field. It was drilled to a depth of 8705 ft. and plugged back for its final completion. The first sintering of zinc ores was done at the Bartlesville plant of the National Zinc Co., under the auspices of the late Otto Rissman. Mr. Rissman, who had had a long experience in the treatment of zinc ores, well realized all the difficulties of satisfactorily roasting zinc concentrates, which were becoming finer and dustier as each year went by—thus increasing the difficulties of roasting them in the existing forms of roasters, which were furnaces of the Ropp, Hegeler or similar types. Mr. Rissman&apos;s idea of the advantages of sinter was expressed in this way: in a zinc ore dead-roasted in a mechanical furnace there are many particles that are just like an egg; that is, they have a hard and impervious film of fused material on the outside, and in the retorting this completely cuts off access of the reducing gases to the center of the egg until a temperature has been reached at which this shell of the egg can be broken down through fusion. A particle of sintered zinc sulphide, on the contrary, is exactly like a piece of sponge. The moment the retort reaches the temperature at which the reactions can take place, they begin, because the reducing gases have ready access to the interior of the particles by means of the pores of the &apos;" sponge." His faith in the advantages of sinter was amply borne out by the results obtained at the pioneer sintering plant for zinc ores installed by the National Zinc Company. Early Method of Sintering The method of procedure at Bartlesville was to roast the zinc concentrates down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 per cent residual sulphide sulphur; to cool these, then to wet them down to the proper moisture and mix them in the mixer of the sintering plant; then to sinter them by means of the heat available from the residual sulphides. The sulphur contents of the roast varied considerably, of course, as it was difficult with the furnaces in use to control the roasting exactly at any point short of dead roast. Hence at times the concentrates were roasted a little too low to sinter readily, and at such times the lack of sulphur was made up by the addition of raw concentrates to the sintering-machine charge in suitable amount.

In this research, the proper temperature for the reduction of iron ores by carbon monoxide was determined. Also, the difference of the rate of reduction on the sizes of ore under four mesh per linear inch was estimated, but no evidence could be found. Rates of reduction on the seven kinds of ore were compared with the results of the experiment, showing a close relation between reducibility and density of ore. Finally, the maximum size of ore that can be reduced in applicable length of time was determined. The author thinks that the process of production of steel may be replaced by low-temperature reduction of iron ores some time in the future. THE reduction of iron oxide, such as Fe203, to iron in the blast furnace is performed principally by carbon monoxide, but partly by solid carbon by the two following reactions: Fe203 + 3CO = 2Fe + 3CO2 2Fe203 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2 It is known that reduction by carbon monoxide takes place at a much lower temperature than reduction by carbon and that the reducing action of carbon monoxide progresses to the inside of the ore in lump form by gaseous diffusion. In the reduction by carbon, however, the reducing action takes place only at the contact surface of the ore and carbon, so that the more complete the reduction by carbon monoxide, the more efficient is the operation. However, the reduction does not progress as shown in the foregoing formula, because carbon dioxide acts oxidizingly on the metallic iron to such a degree that when the gaseous composition reaches a certain proportion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, the reduction practically stops, even though the gases are moving slowly through the heated ore. The proportions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gas depend on the kind of iron oxide and the temperature of reduction, also the duration of time in the reaction. The longer the time of the reaction, the higher the proportion of carbon dioxide obtained in the gas, but finally it will attain to a condition of equilibrium.
