There is interest in the use of rhenium metal films as resistive elements in thin-film circcits, and already some zvork has been done using er)aporated rhenium films. It has been found that rheniim films protected from the atmosphere by an evaporated layer of silicon monoxide show excellent electrical stability. Unprotected films, however, are subject to aging- effects, notably the increase in electrical resistivity as a function of time. This phenomenon can be understood as primarily one of oxidation of the thin films. This paper is concerned with the study of the oxidation and crystallization behavior of such unprotected films. It has been found that the oxidation rates are a function of the substrate temperatures used during the deposition of Lhe metal films. The strictures observed in the films are correlated with the film resistivities and some data are presented to establish the existence of the various types of oxides of rhenium. ThERE is some interest in the use of thin films of rhenium metal as resistive elements in monolithic, thin-film integrated circuits. Some work has been done using evaporated films and it has been found that such films, if protected from the atmosphere by an evaporated layer of silicon monoxide, show excellent electrical stability up to temperatures of 500"." Rhenium films unprotected from the atmosphere tend to age and the electrical resistivity of the films increases as a function of time. Rhenium films, of the order of <100A thick, prepared by electron-beam evaporation techniques are found to oxidize very readily when exposed to dry air at room temperature. It would seem, therefore, that this aging phenomenon could be attributed to the oxidation of the metal films. In this investigation, the oxidation and crystallization behavior of thin films of rhenium evaporated onto silicon monoxide substrates were studied as a function of the substrate temperatures used during the evaporation. The films were examined using electron-microscopy and electron-diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Rhenium metal was evaporated onto suitable prepared substrates which were heated to various temperatures. The evaporations were performed in a vacuum of approximately 5 x 1CT5 torr. The evaporation was carried out at a rate of approximately 10A per omin. The final film thickness was approximately lOOA and the resistance ranged from 5000 to 10,000 ohms per square. The substrates used for supporting the metal films were made by evaporating 75A of silicon monoxide onto freshly cleaved mica. The silicon monoxide film was then floated off the mica by immersing the composite in water. The film could then be picked up on a clean nickel grid. Silicon monoxide substrates were chosen because of their similarity to quartz and glass substrates commonly used for making thin-film resistors. Fuschillo, Gimpl, and McMas-ter have also shown that silicon monoxide films have only minor structural changes at temperatures up to 800°C. This fact simplified the interpretation of any changes observed in the electron micrographs or electron-diffraction patterns obtained from the deposited rhenium films. After the evaporations were completed, the substrates were cooled to room temperature, except where noted differently, before the coated substrates were removed from the vacuum system. All aging of the deposited films was done in a desiccator. The evaporated films were examined in an electron microscope equipped with a hot stage that would permit continuous observations of the samples up to temperatures of 1000°C. RESULTS A series of electron micrographs of the rhenium films deposited on the silicon monoxide substrates are shown to Figs. 1 to 3. In all cases, the metal films are approximately 100A thick and the micrographs were taken 1 hr after the deposition was completed. here was no apparent structure in the films deposited on the substrates held at the higher temperatures. From time immemorial the fissure-vein has been held the simplest type of ore-deposit. The prominence given to it by Cotta and his disciples, from their study of the mines of the Erzgebirge, is impressed upon technical literature; and, in consequence, the ores which carry the valuable metals have been supposed to occur mainly in fissures, cleaving the rocks in diverse directions, and the noblest type of vein has been deemed that which cut across the country independent of its structure, whether evidenced as bedding, foliation or cleavage, and which was identified with rents produced in the rocky crust of the earth. As so conceived, the vein was a fissure filled with ore, extending through the country for a varying distance, and continued downward to a depth more or less proportionate to its longitudinal extent. The vein-material was bounded by an encasement of rock, and those immediate surfaces which limited it on either aide were called " walls." These primary conceptions have become modified by the experience of modern mining in widely separated regions. The study of lode-formations has led to the recognition of notable departures from the supposed normal structure of the veins of Saxony and Cornwall, the two classic homes of early economic geology. Typically the walls of a vein are conceived as parallel rockplanes enclosing the ore; the upper one being called the " hanging-," and the lower the "foot-wall."* Walls are rarely alike. Even where a vein traverses a homogeneons formation, such as a massive crystalline rock, it is usually found that the surface which bounds it underneath

The creep behavior of hot-rolled, hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys was investigated in the temperature range from 0.43 to 0.53 TM. Secondary flow was found to originate primarily from strain-induced gvain growth where grain boundary )nigvation served to relieve the strain energy of distortion introduced by slip, grain boundary sliding, and subgvain formation. The extent to which this recovery mechanism operated was determined by the ratio of grain width to the spacing between planar fibers of TiZn,, compound particles generated in these alloys during rolling. When this ratio was unity, creep resistance demonstrated a marked improvement. In this condition, which was fulfilled by annealing following rolling, structural stability was enhanced with decreasing grain size below the equicohesive temperature (-0.5Tm), while the reverse was true above this temperature. TITANIUM concentrations approaching the eutectic composition of 0.23 wt pctl have been shown to promote a significant increase in the creep resistance of rolled zinc,2 The alloying effect created with titanium is somewhat unique; a structure closely resembling that of a fiber-reinforced metal composite can be developed which selectively modifies creep strength in preference to other mechanical properties. In an earlier investigation,~ the present authors found that, while the fiber network, composed of individual TiZn,, compound particles, had a distinct influence on rolled texture, the crystallographic variations produced were of minor importance with respect to creep. Rather, creep resistance seemingly increased when the grain size appeared to coincide with the in-terfiber spacing. The work described here was undertaken to explore this effect in greater detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three zinc-base alloys containing 0.05, 0.12, and 0.16 wt pct Ti were prepared from CP zinc and iodide titanium in the form of 4 by 2 by f in. chill-cast ingots. The melting and casting procedures for these alloys have been detailed el~ewhere.~ Individual ingots of each alloy were hot-rolled at 200°C (392°F) to total reductions of 10, 25, 50, 75, and 90 pct in from one to five passes, respectively, employing a 10-min reheat prior to each rolling pass. With grain, tensile-type creep specimens with a 1-in.-long, -in.-wide gage section were machined from the rolled strips for test purposes. Annealing studies to explore the influence of grain size on secondary creep flow were carried out at 400°C (752°F) in argon for times extending up to 60 min. The grain-size effect was evaluated in terms of average grain width and length values statistically derived from lineal intersection measurements.4 A similar method was applied in establishing the average interfiber spacing, i.e., average perpendicular distance between adjacent planar fibers. The creep characteristics of the alloys were investigated by means of constant-load and constant-stress creep tests. The former tests were conducted at 25°C (77°F) under an initial stress of 10,000 psi, while the latter were performed in the range from 25°C (77°F) to 90°C (194°F) at stress levels varying from 8000 to 22,000 psi. Total specimen strain, as determined with Budd HE-1161-B strain gages, was in excess of 0.10. Maintenance of constant stress was achieved through periodic load reductions made at 0.01 strain intervals to compensate for the attendant incremental reduction in specimen cross-sectional area. The maximum indicated error in the applied stress at these strain intervals was less than 3.0 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Constant-Load Creep. In an effort to clarify the in-terrelation between interfiber spacing and grain size with respect to the creep resistance of the Zn-Ti alloys, their separate effects on secondary creep rate were determined as a function of titanium content and rolling reduction. These results are set forth in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. The average grain diameter plotted in Fig. 2 was resolved from average grain width and length values. No data are presented for reductions of less than 50 pct because of the inability to obtain consistent measurements on these strips. The curves of Fig. 1 indicated that, for a given titanium content, a decrease in interfiber spacing, as produced with increasing reduction, promoted a decrease in creep rate. Depending on titanium content, however, wide variations in creep rate occurred at the same interfiber spacing suggesting that interfiber spacing, by itself, has little or no influence on creep resistance. Grain size, on the other hand, decreased progressively with both increasing rolling reduction and titanium content, the effect of which led to a pronounced decrease in creep rate, particularly when the average grain diameter became smaller than 3.0 x 10"4 in., Fig. 2. The continuity of this relationship tended to support the view that grain size rather than interfiber spacing was predominant in controlling secondary creep. Annealing Effect. The observed dependence of creep flow on grain size suggested that a further contribution to creep resistance would result when the alloys were annealed to effect a coincidence between grain width and interfiber spacing, see Fig. 3(b). ~eiides creating an immediate barrier to grain boundary movement, annealing offered the possibility of providing increased structural stability by eliminating many high-energy, mobile grain boundaries.= To test this hypothesis, specimens from the Zn-0.16 Ti strips reduced 75 and

The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. The effects of aeration on an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite were studied and their results correlated with flotation tests using xanthates as collectors. The effects of copper activation and of pH variation were determined and possible mechanisms postulated. PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents,3 or by starch.&apos; The object of this work was to study the floatabil-ity of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH. Preparation of the Pyrrhotite Sample: It was desirable that the highest grade of pyrrhotite obtainable be used for this experiment, since the presence of other minerals could affect the surface properties.5 However, no pyrrhotite was available as crystals, and massive deposits of hydrothermal origin commonly contain considerable amounts of chalcopyrite. Pyrrhotite concentrate was, therefore, prepared from a sulphide deposit occurring near Aitkin, Minn. The deposit is of pyrometamorphic nature consistirlg mainly of pyrrhotite and pyrite with graphite, silicates, and carbonates as gangue. The ore, already crushed through 3 mesh when received, was screened at 65 mesh and the undersize discarded. The oversize was crushed through rolls, and then stage-ground dry in an Abbe porcelain mill, the —65 mesh portion being screened out after every 15 min of grinding until all the material passed through this size. The ground product was then concentrated with a drum-type dry magnetic separator. The rougher concentrate was cleaned twice and then demagnetized. The final product was split in a Jones splitter and stored in air-tight bottles. Microscopic examination of the concentrate showed that it was relatively clean and free of pyrite, locked particles, and gangue. By means of the krypton gas adsorption method," the specific surface was determined to be 3000 cm2 per g. The chemical and screen analyses of the final concentrate are given in Tables I and II respectively. It is a well-recognized fact that the oxidation of some sulphide ores during stockpiling, grinding, and conditioning affects their flotation behavior. The problem of oxidation may become serious in the case of pyrrhotite, since this is known to be more easily oxidized than many other sulphides. To ascertain the extent of oxidation, an experiment was carried out by aerating an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite with air, oxygen, and nitrogen as follows. A 300-g sample of pyrrhotite in 2700 ml of water was agitated and simultaneously aerated in a Fager-gren-type laboratory flotation machine. A Precision wet test meter was connected to the air inlet valve, the flow rate of the gas being kept constant at 0.3 cu ft per min throughout the experiment. Samples of approximately 30 ml each were taken from the cell at 0, 4, 10, 20, 35, 60, and 90 min. After the pH was taken, each sample was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed for total iron and sulphur. The iron was determined colorimetrically by the thioglycolate method using a green filter.&apos; The filtrate was oxidized with bromine to convert all of the soluble sulphur compounds into sulphate and this was determined with a Parr turbidimeter." When aeration tests were made in alkaline circuit, calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide was added at regular intervals to maintain a constant pH. A similar procedure was followed in an experiment to determine the abstraction of copper. ion by pyrrhotite. In this case various quantities of cupric chloride were added. The filtrate from each sample taken was analyzed for copper, total iron, and sulphur. The carbamate method with a green filter was used for the copper analysis,&apos; since this method could tolerate a considerable amount of iron in the solution. A pneumatic cell, made from a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel, was used for this experiment. The detail of the assemblage has been described elsewhere." In the present work a stainless steel baffle was inserted in the cell. This baffle overcame the tendency for the coarse pyrrhotite particles to be swirled around the wall of the cell and thus fail to collect in the froth. A 50-g sample of pyrrhotite was added to the cell which contained 260 ml of water. When pretreat-ment of the sample was desired, reagents, such as activator and pH regulator, were then added and the pulp was conditioned for a specified conditioning time. Prior to the addition of the collector approximately 15 ml of the solution were removed for pH measurement and for iron and sulphur analyses. Copper when used as activator was also determined. Collector and frother were then added and the pulp was conditioned for an additional 2 min. Air was admitted to the cell and the froth removed. The separation required from 4 to 6 min, depending on the characteristics of the froth. The float and non-float products were filtered, dried, weighed, and assayed for iron.

In the present day manufacture of glass nearly pure quartz sands are used almost exclusively as the source of the silica, which is the major constituent of all common varieties of glass. Ordinary soda-lime, such as bottle, common tableware, plate, and window glasses, contains from 65 to 75 per cent. of silica. Occurrence Glass sands occur in nature either in the form of loose, unconsolidated sediments or in deposits in which the individual grains have been more or less thoroughly bound together by some cementing agent so as to form sandstones. While deposits of sand and sandstones occur both widely and abundantly distributed, deposits that are sufficiently free from other constituents than quartz grains, so that they can be employed in the manufacture of the better grades of glass, are, comparatively speaking, of rare occurrence. The major portion of the glass sand produced in the United States comes from sandstones. In order to be suitable for glass sand, they should be rather friable. The rock should break down readily along the cementing material between the grains and should not break across the grains rather than along the bond. Some of the sandstones used are so friable that only light shots of slow-burning dynamite are necessary to disintegrate them sufficiently for hydraulic mining, while others have to be passed through crushers in order to disintegrate the rock into its individual grains. MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION An ideal glass sand is made up entirely of grains of the mineral quartz free from inclusions of foreign substances. Sands containing 100 per cent. silica, however, are not found in nature, although some very nearly approach this composition.

IN approaching the problems of sampling coal, a brief statement of certain facts that are more or less taken for granted may be helpful: 1. The coal-mine operator needs reliable data as to the physical and chemical characteristics of his coal in order to plan and control intelligently its mining, preparation, and marketing. The consumer needs such data in order to select the equipment and the coal best suited to meet his requirements, to check the quality of fuel delivered, and the efficiency of its use. Various government control agencies require such data as a basis for classifications and establishment of limits, for use in carrying out the requirements of federal, state or municipal laws. 2. All such data must be obtained by analyses, measurements, or tests made on samples, which are taken to represent the coal tested. It is now becoming generally recognized that, in accordance with statistical laws, test results from samples are not expected to represent the exact qualities of the lot or lots from which they are taken, except within statistical, or "expected" limits. Such limits are definitely specified by some present standards of the American Society for Testing Materials and the British Standards Institution. 3. Samples that give ash within satisfactory limits are usually assumed to be sufficiently accurate for other analyses, except under special conditions such as meeting close specifications for coals showing wide variability in sulphur, fusibility of ash, or other quality. 4. In modern coal sampling the increment is recognized as the basis for taking samples. For a given accuracy the number and weight of increments specified are increased with: (a) the expected ash, and (b) the top size designation of the lot to be sampled. 5. It is extremely important that every sampler recognize that: the specified number and weight of increments are minimums, and that the precautions to be used in order to take them properly are also minimums; that in the reduction of the gross sample the sizes specified for the coal after each stage of the crushing are maximum; that the quantities specified to be taken after each crushing stage are minimum; that any short cuts or failures to meet the requirements specified will reduce the statistical accuracy of the results, although it is possible that one or two checks on a few results may seem to show otherwise.

A need for new supplies of fresh water exists today and in many specific areas that need is urgent. One solution lies in saline water conversion, a problem complicated by cost factors. The principles involved in saline water conversion, the status of development, and the estimated costs (present and future) of several processes are presented. Among the methods discussed are distillation, electrodialysis, and freezing. In general, the costs presented are based on a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs, permitting a valid comparison among the various processes. The need for new supplies of fresh water and the potential benefits to be derived from an abundant supply of converted water are recognized by practically everyone concerned with water problems. The water supply problem exists today; it is urgent in many specific areas in this country and also in the world, and it will become more acute in the future. One answer to the growing problem of adequate water supplies is the development of new sources. Very significant quantities of brackish underground and surface waters exist in certain areas and an inexhaustible supply of ocean water is available. Thus in many areas water resources can be extended through saline water conversion. Congress recognized the need for new sources of fresh water in 1952 and passed the Saline Water Act, Public Law 448, amended it in 1955, and in September 1958, enacted Public Law 85-883, calling for the construction of at least five demonstration plants. The program is administered by the Dept. of Interior through the Office of Saline Water, and its primary objective is to reduce the cost of converted water produced, whether it be by development of new processes or improvement of known processes. This is a most difficult problem and one that will require several years of prodigious effort. It is difficult—not because of any intricate or new chemistry, engineering, or physics involved—but because of the difficulty in converting water at low cost. Whatever the sources of the saline water, the salts which are held tenaciously in solution must be removed before the water becomes suitable for industrial or domestic uses. Saline water is a relatively simple system of salts dissolved in water. It has certain chemical and physical properties that determine the various methods by which the salts may be separated from the water. The system, although not complex, in most instances, has had countless years in which to reach equilibrium and is, therefore, comparatively stable. Because of its stability, separation of saline solutions requires relatively large quantities of energy. The unique properties of water depend on the fact that its molecules are chemically active. The chemical and physical properties of water are associated with the type of bonding involved in the water molecule. Chemical changes such as hydrolysis, or rusting of iron, involve the breaking of chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Physical changes, such as evaporation in a boiler, the melting of ice, or the viscous resistance to flow in a pipe, involve breaking of the hydrogen bonds. (The hydrogen nucleus is so small that it can attract two negative atoms.) Thus water molecules not only combine with molecules of other compounds but even with one another; e.g., each molecule may be bounded to four other molecules. Water molecules cling to the ions of dissolved salt to form water-encumbered hydrated ions and they cling to one another to form entangling networks through which hydrated ions can be propelled only by tearing the networks apart. That is one reason why considerable energy still needs to be expended in our simplest procedures for purifying water. If water molecules did not have this habit of clinging so tenaciously to other molecules, and to one another, it would be easy to push salt ions past the water molecule and get a separation. But the water would not then dissolve salt, so the problem would not exist.&apos; Water when heated evaporates very slowly, relative to other liquids having simple molecules. Vaporization involves the separation of molecules from the liquid, and this means overcoming the attraction between molecules which is due to the hydrogen bonding. The heat of vaporization for water is high; consequently, the boiling point of water is also high. Water boils at 100" C; hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at -60" C; oxygen (02) at -183" C; nitrogen (N2) at -196" C; and methane (CH4) at-161°C, even though the latter has about the same molecular weight as water. Because of these peculiar properties of water, it exists as a liquid on earth instead of a gas such as hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen and oxygen.

As the coating formed affects the corrosion rate, duplicate samples of eight non-ferrous alloys were placed in flowing mine water. The alloys tested were as-cast or as-rolled and machined or polished. The paper describes the tests and gives the corrosion losses and the appearance of the samples at the end of the test. AN IMPORTANT factor affecting the rate and nature of corrosion of metals and alloys is the film, or coating, formed on the surface; and this may accelerate or retard corrosive action once started. The formation of films and coatings is intimately associated with the chemical composition and physical constitution of both the metal and the corroding medium. A film or coating may be either the corrosion product resulting from oxidation; that is, an oxide or salt, or a deposition of suspended matter from the corroding media upon the surface of the metal, or a mixture of both. The coating may adhere tightly or loosely to the surface of the corroded metal. In short, a film or coating is the reaction product of the corroding medium and the metal, which adheres to the surface of the metal and with which may be intermingled material from the attacking media not concerned in the chemical reactions. As the, terms film and coating are used by different writers for very different things, distinction is made between the two, by the present writers, on the basis of thickness. Thus, a film is defined as a corrosion product or deposition, on the surface of a corroded metal, that is of such thickness that it cannot be measured by the metallurgical microscope. A coating, on the other hand, is of such thickness that it can be measured. If the resolving power of the 2 mm. (equivalent focal length) apochromatic oil immersion objective (N.A. 1.4) is taken as the limit of the microscope, the limiting resolution is two lines that are 0.0002-0.0004 mm. apart. It is thus possible to measure coatings that are greater than 0.0002-0.0004 mm. thick. This thickness is equivalent to 200,000-

Several factors which affect the segregation and solidification of killed hot-topped steel ingots are: (1) pouring temperature, (2) volume in the hot top, (3) taper in the ingot, (4) pouring rate by varying the nozzle size, (5) segregation of several elements, (6) moving ingots before completely solidified. In most of this discussion, segregation will be measured in terms of carbon variation only. All the data given are results on S.A.E. 1040 analysis of fully killed steel direct-poured in hot-topped molds giving 20-in, square ingots. Thus the variables of analysis and ingot size and contour are eliminated. Segregation results are all on the rolled-bloom size, not on the ingot itself. They are results from plant-control work and not results of special research on ingot segregation. Pouring Temperature The temperature (or, more correctly, the amount of superheat above the liquidus-solidus) of the steel entering the ingot is, of course, one of the most important factors influencing segregation and solidification. Table 1 gives the average segregation of a number of heats of S.A.E. 1040 steel with normal pouring temperatures of 2775" to 2825" F. The table also gives some data on segregation in hot heats (pouring temperature 2840" to 2870" F.) and in cold heats with some skull (poured at 2725" to 2760" F.). The results in Table 1 are on steel ingots with 20-in. square cross section and 60 in. long to the hot top. The ingot weighs 7100 lb. and the hot top contains 14.3 per cent of the total ingot volume and 11.2 per cent of the total ingot weight. The results are from drillings after rolling the ingots to bloom size. Segregation results obtained on the bloom are probably not as great as they would be in the ingot itself, since heating the ingots for rolling can perhaps cause some migration of carbon from regions of high and low carbon to those of average carbon content.

AUSTENITE is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic trans-formation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state.

FOR four years your Committee has been engaged in the study of problems connected with the educational preparation of professional geophysicists. The present report represents the conclusions drawn from the investigations and deliberations undertaken since it was first organized. These studies have shown that the evolution of geophysics has proceeded along lines that differed from those marking the advance of classical geology. The latter science developed as a descriptive one, dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena, and the elementary, rational explanations that could be offered therefor. The fact that these phenomena were also chemical and physical in nature was seldom given more than passing acknowledgment. During the last half century, however, a new approach to problems of terrestrial phenomena has become of greater significance. This new attack has come through the sciences of physics and chemistry, as the people trained therein have investigated the facts of the earth as problems in their respective sciences. This development has been chiefly at the hands of European investigators, and European universities have long recognized it by establishing departments or institutions of geophysics. In the universities of North America, their arbitrary departmentalization into fields of physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, etc., has prevented the academic recognition of such domains of science as geophysics and geochemistry. In consequence, the development of these subjects in the United States has been largely at the hands of nonacademic institutions, while the universities themselves are evidently in a state of confusion as to how the subject should be handled. In some places an attempt to teach geophysics is made in the physics department, in others in the geology department, in some in the engineering school, and occasionally as a cooperative effort; a Department of Geophysics is seldom found in North America. In some instances, proper academic planning has been precluded by interdepartmental jealousies, or by lack of appreciation of the significance of the subject. For the background upon which these conclusions are based, the reader is referred to reports previously issued or sponsored by your Committee. These reports are available from Institute Headquarters. Although nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth-Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal bri-quetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the world&apos;s largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis., waterfront and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned, General History In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth-Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. DISCOVERED during the time of the Spaniards, the Namiquipa silver-lead-zinc mines in Chihuahua, Mexico, remained idle until 1916, when mining claims were first denounced. About 1922 a Japanese company, the Santo Domingo Mining Co., was formed to mine the oxide silver ore. The company built a 75-tpd cyanide plant and mined in the area for a number of years. Because of an error in surveying in one of the company&apos;s mines situated in another district, mining was carried over into a claim owned by General Marcel Caraveo, at that time governor of Chihuahua. Santo Domingo Mining Co. lost the resulting lawsuit and consequently had no capital to continue operating at Namiquipa. Later, Ray Brown and Eugenio Caballero formed a company to operate the mine, shipping crude ore to the American Smelting and Refining Co. smelter at Avalos, Chihuahua. The cyanide plant was changed to flotation with a capacity of 75 tons per 24 hr. In 1936 the property was again closed owing to labor trouble, a drop in the price of silver, and increased water in the mine.

An investigation, conducted by the author, was begun in September, 1889, by the United States Geological Survey, having for its object the study of the questions bearing upon the occurrence and manner of formation of the deposits of lead- and zinc-ores in Missouri and the adjoining States. The field-work was completed in December, 1891. During the first season the State Geological Survey of Missouri furnished an assistant, and in other ways co-operated in the research within the boundaries of that State. In order that the ore-deposits of the southwest might be compared with those of other sections of the Mississippi valley, an examination was made of the lead- and zinc-mining area of Wisconsin-Iowa, and of the argentiferous lead-mines of the region extending westward from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Indian Territory. In the discussion of the general geology, and in comparisons between the ore-deposits of the Mississippi valley and those of the Rocky Mountains, the writer has drawn largely from his personal experience, having been engaged for many years in professional work as a geologist and mining engineer in that region. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Scate Geologist of Missouri have kindly consented to the publication of the present paper. While giving the more important economic results, an endeavor has been made to set forth the unity of plan which appears in the formation of the deposits of lead and zinc of the Mississippi basin, and to show their relation to the argentiferous ores of the Rocky Mountains—that the ores of gold, silver, and mercury, and also of copper, antimony, zinc, and lead, have a universal common origin, irrespective of the geological formations in which they occur.

Fluorspar, the commercial name for fluorite, is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride, CaF,. Its valuable properties are due to its content of fluorine, and it is the principal commercial source of that element. The name is derived from the Latin word "fluere," to flow, because the mineral has a low melting point and is used in metallurgy as a flux. Cryolite is a sodium aluminum fluoride, Na,AlF,. It is a rare mineral which has been found in commercial quantities in only one place in the world, Greenland. Small amounts of it are shipped from stock in that country, and its place in industry has been taken over almost completely by synthetic cryolite. Because of the relative unimportance of cryolite, discussion of it has been relegated to a short section at the end of this chapter, which is principally concerned with fluorspar. History Fluorspar was used for ornamental purposes by the Greeks and Romans, who fashioned such things as vases, drinking cups, and table tops from it. Various peoples including the Chinese and the American Indians carved ornaments and figurines from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola (1564), who wrote about it in 1546. Mining began in England about 1775 and at various places in the United States during the period 1820 to 1840. Production became substantial following the development and widespread adoption of the basic open hearth method of making steel, in which fluorspar is used as a flux. After that, production and usage were stimulated by growth in the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries and were accelerated by World Wars I and II. Fluorocarbons entered the picture in 193 1 and the use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel blends began in 1942. The development of the froth flotation process in the late 1920s, a differential flotation scheme for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and common gangue minerals in the 1930s, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low grade ores in the 1940s were outstanding technological contributions that enabled increased production of fluorspar concentrates. In recent years the development of pelletizing and briquetting processes for making flotation concentrates into gravel-size particles for use in steel furnaces and the development of more efficient and selective flotation schemes for treating crude ores containing abundant dolomite and barite have been major improvements in the industry.

THE desire of the engineers over the last few years, growing out of their contact with public affairs, that this Institute should take a wider vision than the narrower field of technology and should apply its skill to the development of civic problems which must lay in their foundation on engineering, has led to this discussion today. Some of us in San Francisco, in discussing this question of the relation of the engineers to civic problems, raised the question as to whether or not in this national emergency it was not the duty of the Mining Engineers to bring, forward their combined skill and knowledge and experience to bear upon the problems of the coal industry. This industry, considered as a whole, is one of the worst functioning industries in the United States. It is equipped with capital, with machinery, plants and labor to a peak load at least 20 per cent. above the average necessity. This peak load, therefore, involves the use of probably 100,000 men diverted from other productive industries; it involves an intermittency of employment through its whole personnel that results not only in a long train of human woe, but results also in a higher cost of coal -to the general public. The problem of whether the industry can, by any device, be cured or even partially cured of its intermittency, is solely an engineering problem. It is therefore an apropos problem for this Institute. Your President and myself and others thought that we could best develop this discussion by calling upon men of large experience in the particular branches of the soft coal industry, to bring the facts in front of this general committee, with a view to an exhaustive discussion and perhaps subsequently the appointment of a committee to formulate those facts and such remedies as may be developed into a report that would be of constructive value.

A few years ago an Indian native of British Columbia drew the attention of white men,&apos; to a deposit of a claylike material on King Island, at the mouth of Dean River just opposite Hunter Island in the Pacific Ocean (Fig 1 ) . The native claimed that this natural product, which is found not in solid form but either as a paste or as a thick, viscous liquid, exhibited exceptional healing properties not only for various types of skin irritation but also for internal ailments. He pointed out that the natives had been using this material very successfully for generations. Since then, systematic surveys have revealed that the deposit, covered by a humus layer of varying thickness, is far more extensive than had originally been assumed. The product as mined today is of puttylike consistency and of greenish color. If exposed to air it dries rapidly, forming a slightly gray, rather brittle product, which does not permit redispersion to its original consistency. When the natural product is rubbed on the skin, however, the presence of coarse, sandy material is revealed.
