SLIP, twinning, stacking faults, and precipitates on well-defined planes in a crystal produce traces that are visible on either a polished or an etched surface. The purpose of this note is to establish the usefulness and limitations of the information obtained from such traces when determining the orientation of single crystals or grains in a polycrystal. Attention will be confined specifically to traces produced by octahedral planes in cubic crystals, though most of the remarks can be taken as more generally valid. The problem of determining the crystal orientation is completely solved in principle' and in particular for the special case under consideration.1'2 Tables are available3 in which the orientations can simply be looked up when given the two or three angles between the traces. Thus a quick and simple method is available for obtaining the orientation of a crystal from surface traces. In this note two examples will be given from recently published papers and will show the use of the method with the aid of the Tables, as well as some of the precautions that should be taken in the procedure. As part of an analysis of X-ray Kossel lines, Peters and Ogilvie 4 determined from them the crystallographic orientation of the specimen. They chose a Cu-5.10 wt pct Si alloy that had been partly transformed from the a (fee) phase to the k (hcp) phase. The latter formed as very straight platelets along the octahedral planes of the a phase, and a photograph (Fig. 7 of Ref. 4) was reproduced in the paper4 of the region for which the orientation had been determined from the Kossel lines. Apart from a very small area (about 0.15 mm diam) near the top center of the photograph, the region shown was clearly all of one orientation. Traces in four different directions were readily identified. Starting with the smallest angle and proceeding counterclockwise, the angles between the traces were measured to be 27° 43', 55° 16', 64 3 43 1, and32"26'. These add up to 1802 08 1, indicating a cumulative error of 8'. The correct values should, of course, be taken from the original glass plates, or at least from prints on distortion-free paper, so the precision of the quoted values is actually greater than their accuracy. The solutions can be looked up in the Tables3 in four ways, depending on how the angles are paired, tion for the minutes of arc is required and the solution obtained will be identical for all the four pairs if the values of the angles are not in error. In a practical situation, such as this one, there are several sources of error, so that the four solutions obtained will all be slightly different. An arithmetic average of the four solutions is mathematically incorrect, but may, in special cases, give an answer close to the correct one. A rigorous procedure for refining the orientation has been described by Mackenzie;5 he gives a least-squares method that can be applied, if necessary, to this type of problem. The orientation thus determined can be compared with the one from the Kosel lines and discrepancies larger than the experimental error assigned to nonor thogonality of the X-ray or electron beam to the specimen. Here the example will only be used to illustrate the general procedure for making a very rapid rough check. From measurements on the stereographic projection, Fig. 9 of the paper,4 we can determine that the surface normal is approximately (0.434, 0.704, 0.562). From the Tables3 we find, using 28°, 55" as a good approximation to the first pair (27°43', 55°16'), that the surface normal is (0.453, 0.678, 0.579).* These two values are within 2 deg of each

Zinc monocrystals, when compressed nearly parallel to their basal planes (within 20), deform in a new way; and certain deformation markings, called "-bands," are typical of this new mode. Characteristics of these bands are described. Mechanical behavior of low angle zinc monocrystals was investigated in some detail. Recrystallization did not occur upon annealing of banded specimens that were free of deformation twins. -Bands do not seem to be the result of nonbasal slip, but rather, a result of a microbuckling mechanism. u-Bands differ qualitatively and quantitatively from ortho kink bands. A dislocation model, consistent with some of the features of u-bands, is described. THE plastic deformation of zinc monocrystals with slip planes (0001) nearly parallel to the stress axis was studied in this investigation. In a previous investigation, it was shown that some low angle zinc crystals (those with slip planes making angles of more than about 2.5+1° with the compression axis), deform by ortho kinking while others (those with slip planes making angles of less than 2.5+1° with the compression axis) deform in a new way.' This new mode of deformation will be described in some detail here. Some of its striking features are: 1—it operates only for compressive stresses, 2—its temperature dependence is anomalous, and 3—it exhibits a new type of "yield-point" behavior. The mode of deformation to be discussed is not new in the sense that no previous evidence of its existence had been reported. The markings that it creates on the cleavage surfaces of zinc crystals have been described by several investigators.'" However, this is the first time that it has been made to operate under controlled conditions so that its response to mechanical variables, temperature, and aging treatments could be investigated and its geometry completely described. Apparently. Jillson' as well as Holden3 and Pratt" believed that the small bands they observed were simply small versions of ortho kink bands. In fact, two of these authors3,6 "alled the markings "micro kink bands." In spite of the precedence, it is felt that this term is not entirely suitable because these bands do not have the same genesis as kink bands, and they are qualitatively different in structure. As will be indicated by later discussion, the bands seem to be related to the tensile deformation bands observed in aluminum. The present author has chosen to call the bands "micro deformation bands," or simply ",ubands," and the deformation process, ''p-banding." Experimental Methods Crystals were grown from 99.999+ pct Zn obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. The details of the technique are given elsewhere." It should suffice to say that the crystals were seeded for orientation control, and precision pyrex tubes were used for molding them. About 40 crystals were used, yielding some 130 specimens. Fig. 1 illustrates the typical form of the specimens and shows how the orientation angles are defined. The crystal specimens were usually 1 3/4 in. long and about 150 mil in diameter. The angle between the slip or cleavage plane (0001) and the specimen axis is designated by xo, while a is the angle between the maximum slope of the (0001) plane and the nearest close-packed direction [1210], vary ing from 0°to 30°. The crystals were cut into specimens with a jeweler's saw and the ends were squared by filing (specimens held in V-block). Crystals of this orientation are stiff toward bending, so this procedure introduced only deformation localized at the ends. Then the specimens were polished either chemically in 50 pct HNO³ or electrolytically in 20 pct chromic acid. The mechanical tests were made with an Instron testing machine. This machine weighs by means of electric strain gages on elastic bars and is quite stiff, since the full-load deflection of its load cells is at most 0.002 in. Most of the testing was done at a

The area producing Pennsylvania-grade crude oil declined sharply in 1943, with a daily average production in the entire area of 71,056 bbl. as against a daily average in 1942 of 77,786. The total decline in the Pennsylvania-grade area amounted to 2,456,311 bbl., and 1,g81,z71 bbl. of this occurrcd within the state of Pennsylvania. The principal decline occurred in the Bradford field, where it was caused primarily by a drastic reduction in well completions. All of the zones in the Pennsylvania-grade producing area showed a decline except the part of Ohio that produces that grade, where production increased very slightly over 1942. Table I shows the average daily production by months for the several districts of the area. Table z is a comparison of the production in the two districts within the state of Pennsylvania. It is interesting to note that the Bradford field produced approximately half the total quantity of Pennsylvania grade but accounted for nearly three-fourths of the decline in production from the previous year. It is believed that this decline is ocasioned by restrictive price ceilings and a lack of adequate manpower to drill the necessary wells to maintain production. Stocks of Pennsylvania Grade At the beginning of 1942, stocks of Pennsylvania-grade crude totaled 3,196,000 bbl. and at the beginning of 1943 they totaled 2,626,000 bbl. At the end of 1943 the stocks of Pennsylvania-grade crude had declined to 1,95z,000 bbl. IN an earlier investigation by Jaffe and Buffum,' a time-temperature transformation diagram for isothermal temper embrittlement of an SAE 3140 steel showed some suggestion of two overlapping "noses." These authors mentioned, as a possible explanation, that their specimens embrittled at 525°C were slightly softer than expected, perhaps because of some slight unknown variation in tempering treatment. Because a double nose would be of considerable importance in elucidating the mechanism of the temper brittleness reaction,' it appeared worthwhile to redetermine the portion of the diagram near 525°C. The same heat of SAE 3140 steel was used as in the previous work, and experimental procedures were the same.' Blanks were austenitized 1 hr at 900°C, water-quenched, tempered 1 hr at 675°C, and water-quenched. Groups were then embrittled isothermally at the temperatures and for the times shown in Table I, and water-quenched. For comparison, one series was tempered various times at 675°C, water-quenched, and given no further treatment. V-notched Charpy impact specimens machined from the blanks were tested over a range of temperatures. Energy absorption and percentage of fibrous fracture were plotted vs test temperature for each group, utilizing both the new data and those for the same treatment obtained in the earlier work,' except that the earlier data at 525°C were discarded.* are given in Table I. After a small correction (-0.28°C/BHN) for the variation of hardness" from Rockwell C24, the transition temperatures were plotted against embrittling time for each embrittling temperature, using the data of Table I for the range of treatments covered there, and using previous dataL for other treatments. By cross-plotting, Fig. 1 was finally obtained. It appears from this figure that if there are two noses to the time-temperature-transformation diagram for isothermal temper embrittlement of SAE 3140 steel, the upper nose must lie above 575°C. As interest had been primarily in the region near 525°C, a thorough study of embrittlement above 575°C was not made. Fig. 1 shows that such a study is needed, especially since preliminary measurements at the tempering temperature of 675°C reveal much more rapid embrittlement than would be expected from the data at lower temperatures. The transition temperature increased, approximately, as the logarithm of the tempering time (about 81/2°C, after correction for hardness, for each doubling of the time).& Since three tensile specimens tempered 240 hr at 675°C and water-quenched had an average yield-tensile ratio of 0.844, with 70.7 pct reduction of area, it is assumed1 that the tempering temperature is not above Ae1. The omission of a quench-and-reheat operation below Ae1, for the groups tempered at 675°C, as compared to groups embrittled at lower temperatures, should not affect results." More detailed investigation of embrittlement above 575°C is now under way.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator (BWE) was granted in 1881 in the US, this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generation, despite the low heating value of German lignite on the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 Btu/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is on the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite. These cost advantages for lignite in Germany are due mainly to the concentration of lignite mining in a few high-output mines. The largest one, Fortuna mine in the Cologne district, produced a total of 45 million tons of lignite in 1976. That equals the annual fuel need of a 5750 MW power plant running 7000 hours per year at full capacity. Altogether 95.2 million bank m3 equal to 200 million tons of overburden had to be removed to accomplish this lignite output. The largest BWE ever built is working in the Fortuna mine [(Fig. 1)]. At a digging height of 51 m above crawler level, the total vertical reach in relation to the face conveyor level is 98 m by means of its conveying bridge and loading unit. The hourly output is 10 400 bank m3. Its weight in operation is 13 000 tons and its wheel diameter 21.6 m, as high as a seven-story building. Major reasons for the development of BWE technology in Germany were: ? Lignite deposits with moderately consolidated, alluvial-type overburden (gravel, sand, loam, marl, clay, etc.) ? Great overall depth of the deposits, ranging far beyond 100 m, requiring a wide opening of the mine, hence not permitting direct overcasting of overburden. ? Multiple-seam deposits of poor-quality coal divided by reject partings, which demand a perfectly selective digging tool for clean separation. In general, these conditions are almost identical to those prevailing in the lignite deposits of Texas and neighbouring states: The type of overburden suitable for BWE digging, the overall deposit depth ranges down to around 100 m, and finally, the multi-seam occurrence with partings between seams, the latter ranging from just 1 m to a few meters in thickness. Technique As the Texas-type lignite deposits come into focus more and more as a possible fuel source in power plants to replace natural gas and crude oil, the following will deal with the BWE technology for mining a typical Texas lignite deposit under the aspect of producing enough fuel for a 500-MW power plant located at the mine mouth.

Mine regulators are normally used for proper air distribution in underground mines. They are deliberately introduced resistance in the regulated airway, and by altering sizes, they can distribute specific air quantities to regulated splits and free splits (4, 5). The enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, and the regulations adopted by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (now called the Mining Safety and Health ministration) prompted greater discussions of optimal mine regulator locations because of the Act's stringent ventilation requirements (2, 3). For example, by requiring the separation of the air used in the belt haulage entries from the intake and return airways, the regulations required the creation of a third type of airway---the neutral airway, as opposed to the intake and return airways, adding to the complexity of a mine's ventilation network. It is the intent of this report to show that panel regulators should be located in intake airways at the neck of a panel for a blowing fan system and in return airways at the neck of a panel for an exhausting fan system in order to achieve optimal air control. A computer simulation model is used to determine optimal mine regulator location.

We did install one 100% brick bottom in our #33 furnace which is basically the same design as Inland's furnace. We had previously embarked on a program of replacing all bottoms in our 300 ton furnaces every 2nd campaign which would be about every 2000 - 2300 heats. This had been necessitated by the effect of our rather high oxygen blowing rates and our desire to maintain a minimum bottom interval level. This meant that we were able to compare bottom performance of various types of materials on a realistic bas is. Since furnace availability is critical to our operation, we are organized to employ every piece of equipment and all the necessary man power to complete a rebuild in the shortest possible time. A 300 ton furnace requires 7.5 days to rebuild. If a new bottom is to be installed an additional 2.5 days is added - 24 hours for tear out and 36 hours for bricklaying - making a total of 10 days.

Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells.

It was customary formerly to publish an index of the Transactions about every fifth volume, but since the Institute began in 1913 to publish three volumes instead of one volume per year, this has been deemed impracticable and unnecessary. No collective index has been published since the one covering Volumes I to XXXV inclusive, excepting a short one covering Volumes XXXVI to XL inclusive. The Board of Directors, therefore, upon the recommendation of the Committee on Papers and Publications, decided to publish this index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive, and thus enable members to have in condensed space the collective indexes of all the volumes of the Transactions.

Reliable and detailed statistical data available for Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia are the most meager and unsatisfactory of any of the producing states. Detailed histories and statistics are available for only a few pools. The antiquity of these pools, loose nomenclature, particularly where several names are applied to the same pool or various parts of the pool or a new namsed when the pool was rediscovered, made the collection of accurat historical and statistical data almost impossible. So many of the data reported are unreliable that a breakdown by pools or even by counties, until more accurate information is available, would lead to gross errors. Rather than perpetuate inaccuracies, we have endeavored to go to original sources wherever possible, sift these and provide data that may serve as an incentive and basis for future work. The necessity for accurate information is thoroughly recognized by the operators, particularly because of the effect of recent government regulations and request? for data in connection with the preparation of the various codes a pending legislation. Producers, both major operating companies and individuals, . freely given their time and assistance in the compilation of these data. Valuable information was obtained from tax records, rate cases, statistics published by the oil and gas publications and the Bureau of Mines. So many individuals cooperated in the preparation of these data that individual credit cannot be given. Undoubtedly many errors will be found. Some of the data are open to controversy, and many have been omitted in the hope that new information of a more reliable character may become available. Other omissions are due to an inability to contact the proper individuals, many of whom are no longer connected with this industry. Pennsylvania grade crude sold in 1933 for the lowest price since 1895. Gas production could not find sufficient new markets to fill the void left by industrial stagnation. In the gas industry, where the market price is fixed by contract, uncertainty persisted because of impending legislative action affecting both taxes and utility rates. SOUTH of Havana, there is a geanticline that extends from Madruga to Bejucal. The older formations outcrop in the. east and gradually go under until in the Bejucal region the entire geological column lies below the surface, with the Nazareno formation at the top. The well we are now drilling is located at the deepest part of the section. I think there is a good chance to obtain oil, for the conditions are like those in the Santa Maria field in California. In both places asphalt occurs in the upper shales in the form of dikes that break through the older formations. The drilling in the Santa Maria field was brought about by the evidence offered by the asphalt deposit, which overlaid the oilfields. Detailed geologic work in both fields discloses pretty well defined domes with minor faults. Between Madruga and Bejucal, the San Francisco formation has come, to the surface in a dome and still farther east there are other domes near the base of the formation in which the Madruga chalk is the surface rock. The Bejucal dome was selected for drilling because, it gave the greatest evidence of petroleum in the form of asphalt and because it offered three chances of striking oil in the three possible oil horizons below the top of the Nazareno formation. The hole is now 2600 ft. deep and has shown considerable gas and some oil. The lowest gas sand will probably yield from 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 cu. ft. per day. Very heavy mud has been used in drilling this hole and this has held back gas and oil indications.

Geophysics differs from geology and physics in in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, vol-canology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratow system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist—the exploration geophysicist —calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist—the paleontologist— needs some knowledge of geology. Development of a Geophysicist Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydro1 ogist, or an exploration geophysicistp we may distinguish five phases in the development of a geophysicist: (I) his mathematical and scientific studies in high school; (2) the general mathematical and scientific

GEOPHYSICS differs from geology and physics in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, volcanology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratory system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist-the exploration geophysicist -calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist-the paleontologistneeds some knowledge of geology. Ghenn.*—It has been established that the accuracy obtainable from any precision machine is a function of the wear resistance, maintenance and closeness of fit of the bearings, hence I would like to ask Mr. Toeplitz how these oil-less bearings compare with cast iron or babbitt or similar materials when used on precision machinery. Could these bearings be used, for example, on a grinding machine in which work must be held to a tolerance of plus or minus 0.000025 inch? W. R. TOEPLITZ.—The metal-powder bearings can be held to very close tolerances and are used in place of cast iron and babbitt on precision machinery.

ThIS communication presents the results of a determination of the permeabilities of hydrogen and deuterium in a iron from 360° to 560°C. Recently Heu-mann and primas' have given values of the diffusivity and solubility in a iron of the two isotopes from which the permeability can be calculated. The work reported in the present communication, however, is a direct measurement of the rate of permeation of the isotopes through an identical iron specimen under the same conditions, so that systematic errors can be minimized in the calculation of the ratio of the permeabilities—the value which is usually of main importance in establishing limits for isotopic differences in diffusive processes. Experimentally the procedure used was the usual one: a steady-state flow of gas produced by a pressure difference across an iron membrane was observed as the pressure rise with time in a previously evacuated, calibrated volume connected to the outlet side of the membrane, while a constant pressure of gas was maintained on the opposite inlet side. The membrane was a cylindrical tube 9.38 cm long, 0.730 cm inside diam, 0.187 cm wall thickness, fabricated of 99.95 pct vacuum-melted National Research Corp. iron (less than 0.003 pct C). One end was sealed by a heliarc-welded iron (99.95 pctj lid of 0.147 cm thickness; the other end of the tube was welded to a 304 stainless-steel tube (0.318 cm ID and 0.318 cm wall) which connects to a vacuum system and to the calibrated volume including a dibutylphthalate manometer. The temperature of the iron membrane was maintained constant to ±0.l°C and was measured with an iron-constantan thermocouple which was calibrated against a standard Pt/Pt-Rh thermocouple: the temperature variation along the length of the membrane did not exceed ±0.5°C. Hydrogen was allowed to pass through the membrane assembly for 72 hr at 615°C before permeability measurements were begun. The system was tested at temperature before and after the experiments by a substitution of helium for hydrogen in the inlet side; under these conditions the pressure rise observed in the outlet side was negligible at all times. The gases used for the permeability measurements were 99.95 pct Matheson prepurified H2 and 99.7 pct D2 (0.3 pct HD) from the Isomet Corp. The gases were dried with liquid N2 before use. In Fig. 1 the logarithms of observed flows, jt, for a pressure difference of 73.4 cm Hg are plotted against T-1 Each point in Fig. 1 represents the slope determined by a least-square evaluation of a plot of the pressure in the outlet side of the membrane against time, including at least two separate sets of observations. Each point in the figure has an uncertainty of ±0.6 pct arising from the experimental uncertainty in the pressure and time measurements. The standard deviation of the observed pressures from the straight lines in all cases is less than the experimental precision of the measurements. The observed flow, jt, includes a small but not negligible flow through the stainless-steel connection.

WITHIN recent years gas adsorption methods have been developed for measuring the surface area of finely divided materials and have become extremely valuable in research on the corrosion and the catalytic activity of metals. Rather elaborate apparatus is required, and a single determination is so time-consuming that these methods have not been utilized to the fullest extent; the methods are un-suited for most routine control work such as that encountered in powder metallurgical operations and in processes employing metal catalysts. These difficulties are largely eliminated, and surface area is reduced to a routine determination if the liquid-phase adsorption of a surface-active agent such as a fatty acid can be used. When the affinity of the fatty acid carboxyl group for the solid surface is greater than its affinity for the solvent, a unimolec-ular layer of orientated fatty acid molecules will be formed at the solid-liquid interface in a manner similar to that of a compressed fatty acid film on a water surface. The measurement of surface area is then reduced to a measurement of fatty acid adsorption. This propitious circumstance, first investigated by Harkins and Gans,¹ has been employed with somewhat inconclusive results by a number of investigators in evaluating the surface properties of metals, metal catalysts, and metal oxides. The specific surface area values for nickel and platinum catalysts, determined from the adsorption of a number of fatty acids from various solvents, were found by Smith and Fuzek² to agree with values calculated by the gas adsorption technique of Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller," he so-called BET technique. And recently Orr and Bankston4 have also reported good agreement between nitrogen gas and stearic acid adsorption results in the measurement of the surface areas of clay materials. On the other hand, Ries, Johnson, and Melik5 found only order-of-magnitude agreement between these two methods in studying supported, cobalt catalysts having specific surface areas as great as 420 sq m per g; the reason is partially attributable to the very porous nature of the materials. Greenhill,6 investigating the adsorption of long-chain, polar compounds in organic solvents on a number of metal powders, concluded that a uni-molecular layer of stearic acid was formed on exposure of the solid to the acid solution and that the presence of an oxide or another film did not alter this result. Furthermore, the adsorption process appeared to be the same whether or not the sample was degassed prior to exposure to the solution. Greenhill estimated the surface area of one of the powders he investigated from microscopic diameter measurements, and obtained a rough check with surface area evaluation. Russell and Cochran7 found moderate agreement for alumina surface area results by fatty acid and gas adsorption methods. In addition, they also found that the prolonged heating and evacuating pretreatments previously used by investigators were unnecessary. The present work, however, considerably extends these previous investigations, shows that fatty acid adsorption can be used to determine the surface area of a variety of metals and metal compounds, offers further confirmation of the correctness of gas adsorption methods, and presents a simplified technique for the determination of the metal surface area which is suitable for routine work. Experimental Technique Basically, the fatty acid adsorption method is quite simple. It consists of exposing a sample of the material of which the surface area is desired to a fatty acid solution of known concentration. By analysis of an aliquot of the solution, the concentration after adsorption has occurred may be determined. The difference between the initial quantity of acid in solution and the final quantity is that quantity of acid adsorbed by the sample. The specific surface area of the adsorbent material may be calculated from the quantity adsorbed and the weight of the sample. In agreement with the findings of others as outlined above, it was found entirely unnecessary to degas or pretreat the nonporous materials employed other than by drying them thoroughly. However, precaution was necessary so that the dried sample entered the fatty acid solution with little exposure to moisture. The effect of moisture on the interaction of stearic acid with finely divided materials has been thoroughly investigated by Hirst and Lancaster." They found the presence of water merely reduced the amount of acid adsorbed by powders such as TiO2, SiO2, Tic, and Sic. With reactive materials such as Cu, Cu2O, CuO, Zn, and ZnO, however, water was found to initiate chemical reaction. Only with ZnO was reaction observed when the solid and the solu-
