Data given in this paper indicate that certain relations exist between different characteristics of sandstone. These relations are not rigid, for all sandstones are more or less heterogeneous. Not every increment of a given horizon follows exactly the relationship; however, studying a reservoir as a whole from a large number of samples, definite trends are found to exist. Apparently nature's processes of sedimentation and diagenesis are such as to give some degree of uniformity. Average relationships are valuable because electrical measurements in a borehole comprise a considerable volume of rock near the hole. Also, it is desirable that a given producing reservoir be studied as a unit. In a permeable reservoir whose pores are filled with a saline solution, it was found that the total porosity and the type of sandstone influence the relationship between its electrical resistivity and the RO and the resistivity of the brine R,. The relation can be expressed by the following empirical equation, Ro = R10O— [i] where 0 is the porosity expressed as a fraction and the numerical value of the exponent lies between 1.8 to 2.0 for consolidated sandstones, and is about 1.3 for clean, unconsolidated packs. This equation indicates that an appropriate electrical log can be used to estimate the porosity of a saline water-bearing reservoir when Rw and the type of rock are known. The fraction R0rw, is called the "formation resistivity factor." It reflects the effect of the nonconducting rock structure on the resistivity of the salt water that fills the tortuous paths through which the electricity must pass. The formation resistivity factor F is found to be related to permeability k. In this case the type of rock plays an important role, as shown by the relation F = ak-b [2] where the values of a and b must be determined experimentally for each horizon. Therefore Eq. I rather than Eq. 2 is used when it is desired to determine the value of F, because small changes in rock structure particularly in the pore size are not critical. Another useful relation, R = R0S- [3] where R = resistivity of rock when partially saturated with brine and partly with oil or gas, S = fraction of the pore space filled with brine, and n equals approximately 2 for both unconsolidated and consolidated sandstone, shows that the connate water of an oil or gas reservoir can be estimated in situ from a resistivity log. Equation 3 shows that in order to estimate the water content of a reservoir a knowledge of R and Ro is essential. The first value can be obtained from the electrical log when all factors influencing the resistivity curve can be properly taken into account. (communication to the Secretary?).-In discussing the question of the deoxidation of steel and material suitable for performing this function at the end of the heat, it would seem logical also to include the question of prevention of oxidation in the steel or the formation of iron oxide, FeO. I refer to the use of manganese in the basic open-hearth and basic Bessemer processes. The advantages of high manganese in pig iron for these processes have evidently been clearly understood in Germany for a number of years, although little has been written in regard to the exact manner in which the benefits are obtained. In this country, while we make no steel by the basic Bessemer process, our basic open-hearth process is becoming more and more important. Until 10 years ago, in this country, manganese in the pig iron for this process was considered of little value and by many writers it was spoken of as a disadvantage. During the past 10 years, however, in certain parts of the United States, higher contents of manganese in basic pig have been used with considerable success, although there is apparently nothing in our technical literature to show the reasons for this trend. A German book, "The Basic Open-Hearth Steel Process" by Carl Dichmann does, however, offer an explanation. Dichmann says that if the charge for either of the above-mentioned processes contains 3 per cent. of manganese or above, satisfactory steel.

A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in I920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner,1 M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. [T] The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Besse¬mer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden¬-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be over-equipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed.

The electrical, mechanical, and corrosion cracking properties of an age-hardenable Cu-Ni-Si alloy have been studied over a range of time, temperature, and deformation states for the purpose of determining the relationship between the properties and the structural state. The precifitate has been identi3ed as and the sites of preferred precipitation have been located by electron microscope studies of the structures developed by various combinations of heat treatment and plastic deformation. An extreme form of deformation banding has been observed in the aged alloy that results in high strain concentration in bands lying parallel to {111} planes. These bands are the structural paths along which transcrys-talline cracks propagate in the deformed alloy. The observations provide a basis for a general mechanism of transgranu-lar corrosion cracking of face-centered cubic alloys in terms of stacking fault probability. AMONG the age-hardening copper alloys the copper-nickel-silicon (Silnic Bronze) type is outstanding in exhibiting a high strength combined with a considerable capacity for cold working, a relatively high conductivity, and a low to negligible susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. It is not a new alloy and it has been the subject of a number of investigations,1-5 which were made primarily to establish practical composition and heat treatment limits. The structural characteristics of the aging processes in this alloy have not previously been studied in detail. This particular investigation was undertaken to explore, in detail, and over a wide range of conditions, the properties obtainable by various combinations of working and heat treatment and to correlate structural changes with the observed mechanical, electrical and corrosion properties. MATERIAL AND PROCESSING Eight different commercial heats of the alloy were made and used in the investigation. The range of composition among the eight heats is shown in Table I. Billets, 8 by 24 in., were cast into water-cooled molds, extruded to 1.687-in. rod, and quenched in water after extrusion. Extruded material was rod rolled to 0.750 in., annealed at 1450° F for 2.5 hr, and quenched in water. Subsequent working operations were performed by tandem rolling to various sizes depending on the degree of reduction required. Final cold-working operations were performed by drawing to a uniform size of 0.187 in. diam and straightening by a roller straightening machine (Lewis). The combinations of heat treatment, working and aging that were investigated are summarized in Table 11; the various treatments were performed in the order given in each row of the table, and they will be subsequently identified by the symbols shown in the first column. (communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

The south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19º to 21º and 30º south latitude; and from 40º to 41º and 30º west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Mar-tines, Espirito Santo (Fig. I). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Centra] do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The major deposits are accessible from the railheads by dirt roads, some being 5 to 30 km. off the road, reached by trail. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter- mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatite~, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. Early Operations Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928 and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crysta1 as small as 10 grams. Since '94' only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of 100 grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, 01 Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Marketable quartz crysta1 was first found either in the massive quartz replacement veins of the Victor Hugo mine in the municipality of Domingo Martines, or in the large 'ores of quartz in the pegmatites near Baixo Guandu, extending into Minas Gerais. IN recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. COST OF DRILLING Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 50 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $1 per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft., as more time is consumed in pulling rods. 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations, etc. 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

The relation between the properties of electric logs and the fluid used in drilling a well is briefly discussed in this paper, and the fact that the resistivity of the drilling mud and its filtrate can appreciably affect such logs is shown. Apparatus was designed and a procedure established to determine the effect of various factors on the resistivity of drilling mud. Five muds commonly employed in California were tested and the following observations were made: I. The effect of raising the temperature from 80°F. to 180°F. is to decrease the resis-tiviiy of the mud or filtrate approximately 50 per cent. 2. The resistivity of the mud in most cases closely approximates that of its filtrate. 3, The change in the resistivities of muds caused by the addition of chemical is not the same function of the amount of chemical added for each mud. 4. The effect produced by increased sodium chloride content is to reduce markedly the resistivity of the mud and its filtrate. 5. Weighting materials, such as Baroid and limestone, tend to increase the resistivity of drilling mud. 6, Cement and counteracting reagents reduce mud resistivity. Introduction During recent years, the practice of "electrically logging9' a geologic formation by means of a system of electrodes lowered in a well bore has provided data of inestimable value concerning the nature of the sediments penetrated. Thus, it is generally possible, by means of electric logs, to distinguish readily the differences between shales, sandstones, cherts, limestones, and other rock forms. The distinguishing characteristics recorded in this manner have made possible long-range and closely detailed mapping and visualization of deeply buried structures1-5 to a degree not to be obtained with a reasonable expenditure of money by any other means at present in use. Besides being of value in correlation work, electric logs have been found, in some instances, to be useful in estimating the nature of fluid contained within the pores of a rock. In special cases, even the relative permeabilities at different horizons have been determined.6 That electric logs should reflect in some measure such physical properties of rocks as porosity and permeability and, in addition, give rise to data pertaining to the fluid content of rock interstices, becomes evident when the conditions giving rise to the electrical phenomena measured are known. However, it is not the purpose of this paper to review the present status of electric logging; rather, the reader is referred to the papers cited on page 220 for the principles and practice involved. Importance of Drilling FLuid in Electric Logging Because the drilling fluid must be the medium through which the electric logging device is made to traverse the formations penetrated by a borehole, and since, in general, the drilling mud completely surrounds

INTRODUCTION THE reaction of carbon in solid solution in a metal with the surface oxide film on many metals may be inferred from thermodynamic calculations for high vacua and high temperature conditions. Holm1 has recently shown that oxide films may be removed from ferrous materials by heating in a vacuum at high temperatures and that carbon is the essential element in the reaction. Considerable work has been described in the literature on the decarburization reaction. Several general references may be noted.2,3,4 However, the nature of the mechanism involved in the decarburization is not well understood. Our interest in this reaction resulted from many attempts to degas and to reduce by pure and dry hydrogen the surface oxides 0n strips of various types of chrome-nickel alloys. Some of the early experiments on the behavior of 13 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X 106 mm and at a temperature of 600°C have been reported.5 These experiments showed a slow reaction with the residual oxygen or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600°C pure enough to reduce Cr203 formed on the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransen, Phelps and Hickman,6 and shown to be Cr203. It was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pct nickel and 20 pct chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen' lost weight. The rate of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. TYPE REACTIONS Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. The number and kind of reactions will depend upon the chemical nature, of the metal, its alloying constituents and the location of the alloying constituents. The metals used in this study are chrome-nickel alloys of the heater type. They consist essentially of chromium, nickel and iron, small amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese and traces of zirconium, calcium, aluminum and magnesium. The trace elements are added to improve the lifetime and other characteristics of the alloy when used as a heater. A series of copper-alumina dispersion strengthened alloys were prepared using three different copper and two different alumina powder sizes. Improvements in strength of up to ten times that of pure copper were found in room-temperature as well as elevated-temperature stress-rupture tests. Conductivity values remained from 70 to 90 pct that of pure copper. The best alloys were based on the finest metal powder (1 p) and contained from 7.5 to 10-0 vol pet of 0.018 or 0,033 p alumina. DISPERSION strengthening of metals consists of strengthening a metal matrix by the addition of oxides or other refractory constituents, followed by strain hardening, in order to reinforce the base material and extend its temperature range of application. Since the discovery of SAP by lrmannl and Von zeerleder2 in 1949, many investigators have reported data obtained on a variety of metal-inert oxide alloys.3-7 The present work deals with the mechanical mixing of copper and alumina powders. While several techniques of introducing the second phase have been investigated to date, mechanical mixing so far has been recognized as the simplest, least expensive, and most universally applicable technique that can be used to obtain an ultrafine dispersion of inert particles. In the present case, the effects of changing the metal particle size, the oxide particle size and the volume percent of oxide were investigated. This work is an extension of a previous study.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials were three different grades of copper powder and two different alumina powders. The three metallic powders were -74 µ(- 200 mesh) electrolytic copper powder consisting of irregular equiaxed particles having a normal screen distribution and analyzing 99.5 pct Cu, and two powders having a 5-µ and 1-µ particle size, average, respectively. The latter powders were produced by the hydrogen reduction of purified sulfate solutions at elevated temperature and pressure and were furnished by the Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd. The alumina used was obtained from Godfrey L. Cabot Co., under the trade name of Alon C, one batch of powder having a particle size of 0.018 µ, the other a particle size of 0.033 µ. The crystal structure of these alumina powders was found to be cubic gamma. Each batch of powder was mixed in a Waring Blendor for a total of 15 min, followed by a low-temperature reduction in hydrogen and vacuum compacting in cylinders which were hydrostatically pressed at 35,000 psi to give a compact that could be handled conveniently. Six of the compacts were hydrogen sintered at 900°C while the remaining four were sintered at 1000°C. Subsequently, all compacts were hot extruded at 760°C with a reduction of area ratio of approximately 20 to 1. Evaluation of alloys included density and resistivity measurements, room-temperature tensile tests, stress-rupture tests at 450°C plus one other temperature per alloy, hardness tests, microstruc-tural examination, X-ray analysis of the dispersed phase after dissolving the metal phase, and oxidation studies on two of the alloys. The year 1944 marks the eightieth anniversary of the discovery of petroleum by drilling in New York State. It was in 1864 that a half dozen shallow wells were drilled at Limestone in Cattaraugus County, in a region that now forms the northern extension of the 82,000-acre Bradford pool. These early wells found oil, but not in paying quantities. They did, however, attract attention to the district and were a factor in the development of the still active Bradford pool of Pennsylvania and New York. During 1943, the production of petroleum in New York amounted to 5,029,000 bbl. This represents a decrease over the previous year, in which 5,421,000 bbl. was produced. The flush production for the New York fields occurred in the early eighties shortly after the discovery of oil in the Richburg pool of Allegany County. During the flush period, production was in excess of five million barrels annually. By 1887, however, the output had decreased to an amount only slightly more than two million barrels, and through the early years of the present century the annual total was often less than one million barrels. Flooding of the oil sands for increasing productioil was made legal in 1919, and in 1927 the output once more reached the two million mark. Two years later it had increased to over three million barrels. In Table r is shown production since 1935, in which year for the first time the output under flooding methods was in excess of four million barrels. From this table, it is evident that oil production in New 'I'ork is rather well stabilized, and since most of the oil is obtained by the flooding, or water-drive, method, with little or no prospect of discovery of new oil territory, rapid changes in yield from year to year are not to be expected. In thickness, the oil sands have a maximum of about 50 ft., and by means oi flooding may produce 10 to 12 thousand barrels an acre and proportional amounts for thinner sands. In some cases, floods have been developed in sands only 12 ft. thick. Under good flooding conditions a yield of 2000 bbl. an acre is about the lower limit at which oil can bc produced at the present price of $3.00 a barrel. The average cost for the physical development ol a lease, not including the cost ol the lease itself, is $5000 an acre. Since several months must intervene before the flood begins to act on the oil wells, and a year or more is required to bring thc wells to maximum daily production, it is evident that a considerable interval occurs before maximum returns are realized. THE OLD Pueblo smelter is being dismantled after 43 years of continuous operation, from 1878 to 1921. It was built by Mather and Geist, on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River just below the, city of Pueblo. At the time of its construction Pueblo was considered a most favorably situated town for a custom smelter. Coal, coke, fuel, limestone, iron ore, lead, silver, and, gold ores were plentiful. It was a "downhill pull" from all directions to Pueblo. Labor, both common and skilled, was plentiful and efficient. Leadville was in bonanza and there were not sufficient furnaces in Colorado to handle the ore offered. The plant prospered from the start. It soon required more capital; so the owners; with the assistance of Thomas Nickerson of Boston, at that time prominent in the affairs of the A., T. & S. F. railway, formed the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. About this time, also, very heavy shipments of rich silver ore from New Mexico began to come in. Agencies were established for the purchase of ores in the most important mining camps in the country from Kingman, Ariz., to Butte, Mont. Highly siliceous silver-bearing ores from Butte were shipped to Pueblo in train loads. This was used chiefly in the concentration of leady mattes. RECOLLECTIONS OF MR. GEIST, FOUNDER OF PLANT Mr. Geist is living in Guadalajara and has sent the following brief letter: "Early in 1878 the firm of Mather & Geist, which had been operating in Utah and had then closed their smelter there, after diligent search for a new location selected Pueblo. We erected the first smelter in the valley, blowing in the first furnace in 1878. Mather & Geist carried on until January, 1882, when they transferred all their business to the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co., which had been organized in December, 1881. Full details of this transfer are given in the enclosed Report, which was issued early in 1882, for the purpose of interesting more capital, in which we succeeded admirably. "I personally did all the work of manager and super-intendent, some job in these days. My technical quali-fications were that I was a member of the class of 1866, Yale Sheffield Scientific. I was born in 1848, so was the youngest member of the class.

The development of an open pit slope monitoring system, from equipment selection and justification to complete computer data storage and analysts, Is described. Methods of overcoming the Limitations of the electronic transit/distance measuring device and survey system selected are discussed. Results of the monitoring program showed that blasting was a major cause of Instability, and, after much experimentation, suitable blast patterns for mine production and pit wall integrity were designed. The experiences gained with double benching 'and wall cleanup procedures are discussed . The monitoring program also indicated that water was a contributor to instability, and methods of dealing with water In a rock with a low storage coefficient and transmissibility are described. Because of the danger of falling rock, photogrammetric methods are used for joint mapping and analysis, this work being contracted out. Joint strengths are measured on-site using a portable shear tester. Finally, a discussion of a complex failure is given.

THE iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana High-lands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Profes-sor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse.

An experimental investigation has been made to study the effects of tooth angle and confining pressure on the force required for indentation of dry rock samples under confining pressure. In these experiments static single-tooth indentations were made on two standstones, a limestone, a schist and a slate under confining pressures of 5,000 to 15,000 psi. Sharp wedge-shaped teeth with included angles ranging from 30°to 105°were used. In all cases the force-displarenzent curves are approxinlately linear for rocks tested under confining pressure, as contrmted with the discontinuous curves obtained for silnilar rocks at atmospheric conditions. Photonzicrographs of thin sections through the craters indicate very little evidence of chip formation during indentation. In general the experimental data lie between calculated values for perfectly rough and perfectly smooth tooth-rock interfaces. INTRODUCTION The variables associated with ctrilling at depth are numerous and, in many instances, are not easity isolated and controlled. Also, many of these variables are interdependent; however, if the variables which are sufficiently independent of each other are held constant and are appropriately introduced, the dependent variables can be more easily studied and evaluated. It is the purpose of the present investigation to study experimentally the simplest case of bit tooth-rock interaction. In essence, the experiments have involved the static loading of sharp wedge-shaped tools on the surfaces of effectively semi-infinite dry rock samples subjected to confining pressures. During this investigation the following quantities have been maintained constant: 1. Pore pressure: atmospheric (i.e., the rock is dry). 2. permeability: although the rocks may be permeable, they are "jacketed" in such a manner that the fluid is not permitted to flow through them. 3. Temperature: 75F. 4. Rate of loading: essentially static (approximately 0.002 in./second). 5. Bit tooth: a sharp wedge-shaped tooth loaded normal to the rock surface. 6. Rock surface: smooth and flat. 7. Drilling fluid: hydraulic oil. In addition to the above conditions, the rock surface was free of a layer of cuttings. There was no indexing to previously indented surfaces, and the influence of corners of the borehole was neglected because the rock samples were effectively semi-infinite. The following quantities have been varied, and the resulting effects have been studied: 1. Rock a) Type (e.g., limestone, sandstone, etc.). b) Mechanical properties ) Necessarily dependent c) Porosity on type of rock. 2. Bit tooth (included angle of wedge-shaped tooth). 3. Depth of penetration. 4. cobfining pressure. On the basis of laboratory experiments which have shown that many rocks exhibit ductile behavior at confining pressures corresponding to depths usually reached during drilling,'.' a theory has previously been advanced which predicts the force required for penetration by a single sharp wedge tooth into a ductile* material.' The material is assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous and rigidly plastic (no elastic deformation) and to obey the Coubomb yield criterion (Figs. 1 and 2). Equations governing the force required for penelration are given for two extreme cases:** 1.
