Drilling in Missouri in 1939 was marked by wildcatting in the northern half of the state. The total completions numbered 82, exactly half the 164 of 1938. There were 15 gas wells with an initial open flow of 6,383,150 cu. ft., 4 oil wells with about 40 bbl. initial production, and 63 dry holes. The wildcatting followed the widely publicized leasing activity in the Forrest City Basin in northwestern Missouri, northeastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa. Those in charge of the Second Pan-American Financial Conference say that the engineering profession will be well represented at the Janu-ary conference in Washington. Latin American engineers are more closely connected with important industrial projects and have a greater command in matters pertaining to the developments on which they are working than is the case in the United States. Our own engineering profession may. therefore do well to study the Latin-American plan of cooperation between capital and the engineers.

AN X-ray diffraction pattern for "calcined cold precipitated ferric oxide" is reproduced diagrammatically along with data for other iron oxides by R. C. Mackenzie.1 This pattern, which shows spacings higher than those for any other form of iron oxide, was obtained from material prepared and photographed at several different times over a period of weeks, but later attempts to reproduce the results were unsuccessful the pattern of hematite being obtained every time.2

Edward Leonce Dufourcq, mining engineer, President of Dufourcq & Co., Inc., New York, and Assistant General Manager of the Teziutlan Copper Co., New York, was attacked by bandits and mortally wounded on Wednesday, Apr. 16, while trying out a' gasoline motor car on a line of railroad between Teziutlan and the company's mine, twelve miles away. Word of his death was received Friday by Mrs. Effie Mason Dufourcq of 227 Riverside Drive and by D. C. Brown, Vice-president of the Teziutlan Copper Co.

The testimony given before the Patent Committee of .the House of Representatives in connection with the bills to establish the Patent Office as an independent bureau, to establish a United States Court of Patent Appeals, and to increase the force and salaries in the Patent Office, has been completed. These bills were originated by the Patent Committee of the National Research Council and have received almost universal approval. The Committee of the House of Representatives is favorable to what this Committee of the Research Council is trying to accomplish but the proverbial inertia of Congress toward the Patent system needs outside stimulus.

As described in a previous presentation and in various patents, the Minerals Sciences Div. of UOP, Inc., has developed a modified reduction roast ammonia leach process for nickel laterites. This process gave considerable improvement in extraction over the conventional Caron approach as practiced in Cuba, Australia, and the Philippines. This greatly improved response was obtained with a wide variety of ores. This paper describes the pilot plant flowsheet and reviews the design features unique to the UOP process. Operating results from pilot plant campaigns are compared with bench scale results. Operating problems and their solutions are also discussed.

COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES On February 21, 1918, the students of the Colorado School of Mines who are members or have applied for membership in the Institute re-organized the "Scientific Society of The Colorado School of Mines,? which has for its .purpose the study and discussion of mining problems. The 112th Meeting of the Institute, and the Annual Business Meeting, will be held at the Headquarters of the Institute in New York City, Feb. 14 to 17, 1916. The Chairmen of several of the technical committees report that papers on subjects of timely interest in their respective branches have been promised. David H. Browne, who was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Arrangements, has organized his committee for active work. Members are urged to make their plans now to be present at this meeting to avail themselves of the pleasant opportunity for greeting old friends and making new ones among those engaged in the same profession.
