EVERY forward-looking mining company realizes the need for employing graduate mining engineers so that there will be a supply of qualified men from which to draw for company officers, executives, and mine managers. The mining industry is competing today with numerous other fields of engineering for its supply of technical men, many of which are more attractive than mining because of better pay, living conditions, and well- regulated company training programs. The Ontario Mining Association and the mining companies of Ontario are conducting a postgraduate training plan which if adopted in the United States, might well encourage top quality men to study mining.

During the four years that Burr A. Robinson has held the position of Assistant Secretary of the Institute he has not only won the regard and admiration of the Directors and his associates at headquarters because of his unselfish devotion, efficiency and painstaking application, but lie has formed a wide circle of friends among the members of the Institute. All will learn with regret that he has voluntarily severed his connection with the Institute in order to take a position with the United States Rubber Co., which offered such flattering prospects for the future that the Board of Directors, in spite of their disinclination to lose his services, did not feel justified in urging him to decline.

The authors came to the same conclusions about the occurrence of zone formation in A1-Mg alloys as was outlined in previous papers.31'32 Because of the sensitivity of their measurements, it was shown that zone formation could also occur at a much lower range of mag- nesium content than previously observed.31, 33 The idea of strong interaction between magnesium atoms and vacancies, as stressed by the authors, so that all of the quenched-in vacancies are kept in solution at lower temperatures but anneal out completely at 150°C, is in disagreement with our results which clearly indicate that zone formation and annealing out of vacancies occur simultane-

Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground- water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hundred pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. During the year 1937, there were 663 oil wells drilled in the Texas Panhandle, making a daily initial production of 322,332 bb1.—that is, 191 more oil wells drilled than in the previous year, with an increase in the total daily initial production of 66,283 bbl. The scarcity of values of tensile strength of rocks has been explained by the lack of successful testing procedures. In the case of mine rock a description is given' of the difficulties encountered in testing a cylindrical specimen, such as a core, by conventional methods. Over a period of years the following method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. It does not completely supersede the use of cores with special fixtures but is a supplement in all cases where cores cannot be obtained, as from soft rocks, or in cases where it is less expensive to prepare test specimens by cutting them out of the rock instead of drilling cores.

It appears that Utah is about to add another mining district to its already impressive roster. This time it is the Great Salt Lake, whose high-mineral content waters are being subjected to intensive study aimed toward the recovery of potassium, magnesium and lithium compounds by solar evaporation techniques. Among the firms conducting such experiments is Lithium Corporation of America, which, in a joint venture with West Germany's Salzdetfurth A.G., is operating evaporating ponds and running engineering tests at a site near Little Mountain, about ten miles west of Ogden. Here, on the clay flats along the northern portion of the lake, LCA holds leases and options totalling about 55,000 acres in the Bear River Basin.

Twenty years ago, the northern Oquirrh Mountains overlooking Salt Lake City were bare. Heavy logging and overgrazing combined with erosion and uncontrolled forest fires had severely denuded the mountains by the turn of the century. As a final coup de grace, a copper smelter was built there in 1906, and for the next 50 years its sulfurous fumes killed off what little vegetation remained. In 1956, Paul Rokich, a biology student at the Univer¬sity of Utah, started to surreptitiously restore the mountains. For the next 17 years, Rokich devoted his spare time and money to replanting the Oquirrhs, with the result that several thousand acres of the mountains are green again, and animals have returned: deer, elk, and rabbits thrive among olive, maple, and fruit trees, wheat grass, and sunflowers.

The following resolution was then unanimously passed: WHEREAS, the integrity and life of this nation is dependent upon its ability to successfully defend itself against foreign aggression and attack, and WHEREAS, it is necessary that the nation he properly prepared to the end that our untrained patriotic volunteers he not uselessly slaughtered and our country disgraced and defeated, be it therefore RESOLVED: That the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers believe that compulsory universal military training should be at once instituted and that adequate, complete and immediate preparedness, should he provided. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That, we believe that thorough and complete preparedness in the army, the navy and the industries of the country is vital; anything less is unsatisfactory and inefficient and may result in disaster to the nation.

Report of the Americanization Society, New York Section During the past two months the Americanization Committee has held social meetings of various kinds for foreign-born women, as a preliminary to future effort along the lines of Americanization work. At the same time, a thorough investigation was made as to the work being done in New York by organizations devoted to this interest. The committee will be very glad to help any other committees being formed, in mining centers, with advice and information that has been gathered together as to classes and meetings of all kinds best suited to the needs of a foreign-born population. The work has been so extensively taken up in New York that for the present it would seem to be, for this committee, the most profitable and interesting work to continue the social meetings and to undertake the care of one or more immigrant families, to be friend and adviser in joy and sorrow, work and play, and in this way do some fundamental Americanization work. Chairman, MRS. JESSE SCOBEY The Foreign War Relief Committee closed its dispensary fund during the past month with a contribution to the American Fund for French Wounded of $1720.51, balance on hand, principal and interest, as a gift from the New York Section of the Woman's Auxiliary for pressing emergency dispensary work in France. The American Fund for French Wounded was authorized to cable this sun at once, in consideration of the fact that their existing dispensaries, including the one established by the New York Section at Briey, were in excellent condition, while their mobile dispensary fund was confronted by the most urgent need for work among the refugees now returning in pitiable condition and in great numbers to certain distressing centers. The committee sewing at Fund headquarters every week has had seven working days, with an enrollment of twenty: The average attendance was ten; largest attendance for any one day, thirteen; smallest attendance, eight. Interest in this activity is growing steadily and it is the intention of the committee to push the work vigorously for the next few weeks.
