THE present paper is concerned with typical temperature values experienced in lamp-filament measurements as made on regular factory and engineering products. It deals with the relations existing between temperature, efficiency, lamp size, and life of incandescent lamps, insofar as they affect the rating of the product and its use by the individual consumer. The temperatures measured lie in that range covered only by the general method of radiation pyrometry, as opposed to direct methods used under contact conditions. The range of temperatures ordinarily experienced extends from about 2125° K., for the now almost extinct carbon-filament lamp, to 3200° K. for the comparatively new tungsten-filament motion-picture lamp. Most of the more common sizes of tungsten lamps have temperatures ranging from 2500 to 3000° K. Because of the high temperatures involved and the relatively small area of the sources used, we are practically restricted to two methods of measurement, both of which depend on the light radiated front the filament. The first and more usual method is that of the Morse pyrometer, dependent on the variation in temperature of the amount of light of a given color range yielded by the filament. In this case, the measured temperature is that of a small part of the incandescent body, that is, the part which is focused on the comparison filament. The second method, known usually in this country as that of "color match" and in England as "color-identity" is based on the color of the total light yielded by the filament, the comparison being facilitated by the use of an ordinary photometer- head. A more definite idea of the temperatures involved in the case of filaments of various vacuum and gas-filled lamps, is given by Fig. 1. The size of the lamp, in watts, is plotted along the horizontal axis and the temperature of the filament is plotted along the vertical axis. The lamps concerned are regular product, rated for 1000 hr. life. The temperature values for the old 16-candlepower carbon lamp and the new motion-picture lamp are shown by the cross and circle respectively.

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the Isabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test-runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the three-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 2. The authors feel that the 22 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mil1 speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds. Obviously, rod and liner consumption could not be determined for each mill speed in so short a time. The rod load was maintained at a uniform level throughout the series of tests. The authors have operated rod mills at various speeds over the past several years, and it is their observation that rod consumption is directly proportional to the mill speed. Likewise, that the rod consumption per unit of work performed is a constant, providing that all other operating factors remain the same. Peruvian production for the year 1935 amounted to 17,064,879 bbl., a record amount for any year, bringing the cumulative production of the country up to 188 million barrels. The 1935 figure is an increase of 785,769 bbl. over the 1934 total. The property of the International Petroleum Co. contributed 636,812 bbl. of this increase, and the Lobitos property 158,625 barrels. Exploration work in the country was again active, with attention focused on three areas, the Huallaga River, Lake Titicaca and the Coastal Zone of the Province of Tumbes. It is reported that in the Huallaga River area the Selden Breck Construction Co. has completed geological and engineering studies on its Pachitea River concessions and has ordered a drilling rig. In the Lake Titicaca region further studies in the vicinity of Pusi were made by Government geologists. During the period from 1906 to 1915, the Pirin anticline in this area produced 285,936 bbl. of low-grade crude. The Government holds 120,000 hectares of reserved lands in this area. In the Coastal Zone of the Province of Tumbes explorations by the Government were continued on the National Reserve, and a test location has been selected in the Quebrada Zapotal about 10 miles from the Port of Zorritos. An order has been placed in the United States for drilling equipment. LaBrea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the LeBrea-Parinas Estate reached an all-time high in 1935 of 14,756,914 bbl., an increase of 636,812 bbl. over the 1934 record. The total production from 1890 to 1935 was 148,541,523 bbl. During 1935 a total of 63,021 ft. was drilled in new wells and 5449 ft. in deepening existing wells; 23 wells were deepened and 29 new wells were completed, of which 27 were producers and 2 were dry holes. At the end of the year 2873 wells had been drilled on the Estate, of which 1838 were still productive. The remaining 1035 wells represent abandoned producers or dry holes. Practically all the drilling on the property has been done with cable tools, but during 1934 three strings of rotary tools were introduced. The U. S. Navy Department has perfected plans for the enrollment and training of considerable numbers of engineering officers. A school for this purpose, the U. S. Navy Steam Engineering School, has been established by the Department at Hoboken, N. J. The school is open to men between the ages of 21 and 40 who meet the physical requirements of the Navy, who are of thorough ability and officer-like character and who have completed the mechanical or electrical engineering course at certain recognized technical schools, or who possess an education and experience adjudged to be an equivalent thereof. Enrollment in the U. Naval Reserve Force of men properly qualified may be made at any Naval enrolling office, notation being made of the applicant's qualifications and desire to be detailed to this school. Applicants will be enrolled as Chief Machinist Mates, and during the course of instruction will draw the pay of this rating, $83 per month, plus $60 per month paid as subsistence. Upon graduation, men will be commissioned as Ensigns in the U. S. Naval Reserve, with a salary of $1700 per year. The duty to which a graduate of this school will be assigned will be that of an engineer officer in the auxiliary service of the Navy. Special provision has been made for the continuance of the school with proper material by a Navy regulation which permits undergraduates of the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Classes in recognized engineering schools to enroll in the Naval Reserve Force with the rating of Seaman 2d Class, and continue their courses at the institutions where they have matriculated. Such men will be called into active service after their graduation, and can at that time, if they are qualified to pass an officers' physical examination, apply for admission to the U. S. Navy Steam Engineering School. Men who are registered in the draft, either graduates or undergraduates, may enroll with the proper enrolling officer by securing from their draft board a letter of release, which in all probability can be obtained for this purpose. The aim of this school is not simply to produce engineers, but to produce naval engineering officers in the true sense of the word. The course of instruction covers a period of five months, arranged in four periods.

THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

The Morning silver-lead-zinc mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is about 'two miles northwest of Mullan, Ida. The lode is a metasomatic fissure vein. The orebody is approximately 2000 ft. long within the bounds of the property and varies in width from knife edge stringers to 50 ft. It has been developed to a depth of 3600 ft. and stands nearly vertical in Revett quartzite, which .strikes north 65" west. The high-grade veins and lenses are generally mixed with waste (siderite, quartz, and quartzite). The average grade of ore to sorting plant in 1921 was 4 oz. silver per ton, 8.6 per cent. lead, and 4.1 per cent. zinc. Wall rock stands only a short time without timbering. The minimum angle of gravity flow is 45". The ratio of waste sorted out to ore is 6 per cent. No gases are generated underground and temperature has no influence on mining operations. Fresh air is forced down the air raise and up the main shaft. Drifting and Stoping Main drifts 12 ft. wide and 13 ft. high are driven every 200 ft. (vertically) and are connected by raises 125 ft. apart. These raises consist of three compartments (chute, tramway, and timber slide) and are for the purpose of ventilation, access, and hoisting supplies to stopes. Ground is stoped between raises. Chutes are placed every 25 ft. for drawing off ore broken in stopes. Waste for filling is obtained from waste raises off the stope in walls or waste is dumped from the level above down the chute compartment of raises, which is bulkheaded so that waste can be drawn off at any floor as required. Timbering Posts and caps for square sets (varying in diameter from 6 to 24 in.) are cut to length in a sawmill on the surface. No preseratives are used. The word "engineering" should not be considered as all-inclusive. Perhaps it should be redefined at this time. Various fields of learning that are indispensable to the locating, beneficiating, processing and using of minerals cannot be classified properly as engineering. For example, in locating deposits, the sciences of paleontology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, petrology, petrography, geo- chemistry, economic geography, and mineral economics might be involved. Beneficiating, processing, and using go beyond the normal scope of engineering to include fuel technology, physical and organic chemistry, physical and atomic metallurgy, and ceramics. Fifty-eight institutions of higher learning in the United States offer curricula in one or more subject-matter fields of the mineral arts and sciences. Thirty-four curricula are offered in mining; 42 in metallurgy; 17 in petroleum and natural gas; 13 in ceramics; 1 in fuel technology; 23 in geological engineering; 8 in geology; 4 in geophysics; 2 in mineral preparation; and l in mineral economics.1 Under given conditions, some of these curricula probably could be eliminated without the slightest retardation in the rate of advancement of knowledge concerning the science of mineral discovery, extraction and utilization, but it is no credit to mineral industries colleges that five departments of mining per-

This paper describes a number of model tests conducted in Plexiglas models to investigate the phenomenon of fracture pressurization. The models were examined with high speed photography while being subjected to explosive loading. At the same time pressure transducers were used to record the pressure in the borehole as a function of time and also along the path of the propagating fracture to measure the pressure at various locations along the fracture as a function of time. Both propellants and explosives were used to charge the borehole. Air as well as fluid filled boreholes were needed to provide a variety of pressure rise rates. On some tests eddy current displacement gauges measured crack opening displacements as a function of time. As a final check high speed photographs taken during the event were used to visually ascertain the location of the fracture at any given time.

OF the several professions-the chemist, the civil engineer, the mining engineer, the mechanical engineer-the courses of instruction, as arranged at the scientific schools, differ considerably as to the amount of practical information which the student is able to gain. The analytical chemist has facility for a very thorough review of the processes which he will be called upon to perform. The student in civil engineering by his field practice learns the use of his tools and the art of taking field-notes. The mechanical engineering student is in the vicinity of machine-shops, which he can visit, and at which he can work. The student in mining engineering has no such advantages. The mines are at a distance, and the railroad fare to get to them is oftentimes an insuperable difficulty. The aim of these laboratories is essentially to give to the student in mining and metallurgy a chance to study on a small scale the practical parts of his profession. We cannot, in a small laboratory, build a mine to timber, to work, and to survey; we cannot make artificial quicksands and other impediments to mining. In short, we cannot study exploration; but we can study the mechanical preparation and the subsequent smelting of ores. Before presenting the plan of these laboratories it may be interesting to indicate the progress of the idea from its beginning. During the summer of 1870 President Runkle visited the mines of Colorado, and while there, conceived the idea of making an expedition with the mining students to some of the Western mining regions. He talked over the scheme with many railroad and mining men, and everywhere received encouragement. In the summer of 1871 the Institute party visited the mines of Colorado, and spent six weeks in taking notes of them. President Runkle here conceived the idea of building up a mining and metallurgical laboratory ; and by the aid of Booth & Co. of San Francisco, a stamp-mill was obtained, with the Washoe silver-working apparatus. While the installation of mine bulkheads to retain water under high pressure is by no means a rarity, the following points which arose in the designing and placing of two of these bulkheads may be of interest: The Hibernia magnetite mine, located about 40 miles west of New York, in the State of New Jersey, is partly fillcd with water. This mine is located on an ore lens, the outcrop of which is over a mile long. The ore has been mined from this lens from the surface to a depth of more than 1,500 ft. It was held desirable to separate the old workings from the new, and to allow the former to fill to the 850-ft. level. Two weak places existed between the new and old workings below this Ievel: namely, a temporary bulkhead on the 10th level and a rock bulkhead of indeterminate thickness on the 16th level. When the matter of allowing the old workings to fill was investigated, the fact was developed that if these old workings were filled, the bulkhead on the 10th level would be subjected to a water pressure of about 50 lb. per square inch, and that 200 lb. per square inch would act on the 16th-level bulkhead. As the above-mentioned barriers were not deemed of sufficient strength to permit of these pressures, it became necessary to design and install new bulkheads. Design As the 16th-level bulkhead was required to withstand a pressure of 200 lb. per square inch, it presented some difficulties. A careful consideration of the various types of mine dams now in use led to the adoption of a design of the form of a truncated wedge. In this, the pressure side of the dam is of greater area than the hack, so that the resultant action is similar to driving the wedge. By cutting generous skewbacks in the walls, roof, and floor, this type in reality becomes an invisible arch. The wedge feature tends to compress the materials in the bulkhead, thereby adding to its imperviousness.

During the boom period of 1928 and 1929, several oil companies took advantage of high security prices to sell stocks, thereby securing money for the company very cheaply. Few if any of those companies realized that the money received was not at all cheap in view of the fact that it was for investment in fixed assets at inflated prices. Suppose a company borrowed twenty millions of dollars to expand its marketing facilities during the boom. It diluted its capital and acquired fixed property which could not earn its interest requirements during the following deflation and therefore consumed income from other company activities. The company also had to stand the deflation in the capital value of all the property it bought. Since the mistaken expansion during the boom accelerated the decline in net income during deflation, the financial position of the company was harmed in proportion to the amount of that expansion. Thus the company was unable to get money to buy fixed assets in the depression when all property is cheap. The same condition holds for the company that sold common stock for the purpose of developing potential production in a newly discovered oil field. Regardless of what the ultimate value of the new field may be, potential production does not increase the net income of the company. The difficulty of meeting the enlarged dividend requirements due to the increased number of shares outstanding impairs the financial position of the company during deflation in some relation to the probability of decreased dividends. This company also is not in a position to expand during the depression when properties and companies can be bought for a fraction of their real value. Expansion of fixed assets during boom times has been the ruin of many otherwise good companies. Some of those which most extensively bought property during the post-war boom have not yet recovered. A number of cases could be cited in sugar, leather, fertilizer and wool. This does not seem to be governed by the quality of the property bought, for examination shows the assets to have been of individual high quality in many cases. When recovery is long deferred it is likely to be true, as in sugar or textiles, that the industry has a large "potential" capacity for overproduction.

The magnetic reflux classifier, which utilizes the combined effects of magnetic fields and a hindered settling classifier, is a new tool for determining the quantity and quality of middlings in fine-sized magnetite concentrates. Results are given for processing a typical taconite ore, and a sketch of the apparatus is included. IN examining magnetite ores and beneficiated products it often becomes necessary to make critical studies of the amount of grinding necessary to produce the desired degree of magnetite liberation. In the past this has been accomplished by laboratory heavy-liquid tests, which provide a method for selectively removing middling particles and free magnetite from various-sized fractions. Examination of the various products under the microscope results in fairly accurate determination of the degree of liberation. The method is quite efficient on sizes coarser than 325 mesh. Thus the heavy-liquid method of middling separation was satisfactory until the advent of present day magnetic taconite studies. When magnetite concentrates ranging from 70 to 100 pct —325 mesh are studied it becomes apparent that older methods of determining liberation size are not satisfactory and that there is need for a new method. For example, some of the low-grade magnetite ores of the Wisconsin and Michigan iron ranges require grinding to 100 pct —325 mesh to produce a magnetic concentrate containing less than 12 pct silica. Examination of concentrates from such ores often reveals that many of the middling particles consist of only very minor proportions of iron mineral. Thus it becomes important to be able to determine the degree of grinding necessary not only for complete liberation, but also for liberation of only 80, 85, or 90 pct of the total iron mineral content. Actually, complete liberation is never attained, but is often used to designate that degree of liberation necessary for production of high-grade concentrates. A rougher concentrate, produced after elimination of a coarse-sized tailing, can usually be subjected to a second grinding stage and concentrated into a higher grade product than could be produced from the same crude ore with one stage of grinding resulting in the same overall size reduction. This fact adds to the importance of being able to determine partial degrees of liberation on any magnetite ore. Standard laboratory methods such as heavy-liquid separation, microscopic grain counts, Davis tube magnetic separation, magnetic flocculation, classification, flotation, and others often are not applicable, or are prohibitive because of time requirements when large numbers of fine-sized magnetite samples are investigated. The Davis tube magnetic separator is an efficient tool to use in rejecting the non-magnetic mineral particles from an ore sample. The middlings discarded by the tube separator usually are so low in iron content that they can be considered relatively unimportant in liberation studies. This condition is caused by the extremely high flux density used in the Davis tube. This flux density ranges from four to eight times the flux density produced by most of the powerful commercial machines in use today. Thus the problem resolves itself into a search for a method of selectively removing middlings from Davis tube magnetic concentrates which will be both rapid and efficient. Those methods showing most promise in the development of a process for isolating middlings from extremely fine-sized magnetic concentrates were flotation and magnetic flocculation. The use of flotation to remove middlings from magnetic concentrates is reported in the literature.'.' The flotation process is effective in removing middlings from a magnetite concentrate, but physical entrapment of fine-sized free magnetite in the silica-bearing froth is an undesirable feature. The flotation method of removing middlings requires time, effort, and precise control of many variables, and does not meet the required degree of middling isolation. Magnetic Flocculation Magnetic flocculation has long been resorted to"-" in efforts to upgrade magnetite concentrates. One of the new magnetic taconite plants now under construction on the Mesabi Range includes magnetic flocculation in the flowsheet' as an accessory process to remove high-silica middlings and free silica which has been mechanically entrapped in magnetite flocs. The use of magnetic flocculation as a laboratory method of making precise separation of middlings was further investigated, since it offered a rapid, simple method of accomplishing the desired result. Magnetic flocculation involves the subjection of a magnetic concentrate to a strong magnetic field, passing the concentrate in a highly flocculated condition to a hydroseparator or other classifiers of various types, and removing free silica and middlings as overflow products. EXPERIMENTS on twenty-six drilling muds were carried out in an effort to establish a correlation between the apparent viscosity values for these muds as obtained with the Marsh funnel and the Stormer viscometer. This required a calibration of both instruments in which the density of the calibrating liquids was taken into account. Corresponding to the Marsh-funnel viscosity values that were obtained at 1500 c.c. in, 1 qt. out, equivalent Stormer viscosity values were obtained at a Stormer cylinder test speed of approximately 1100 r.p.m. Further, a linear relation between the logarithms of the Stormer cylinder test speed and the resulting apparent viscosity was found to exist for the muds tested for 200 to 1000 r.p.m. The significance of the slope of this linear relationship is discussed as it applies to the field use of drilling muds. It was concluded that Marsh-funnel viscosity measurements are expressible in absolute units that may be correlated with Stormer viscosity measurements, provided these are made in the manner described in the paper. INTRODUCTION The Marsh funnel is used almost universally to determine the viscosity of drilling muds in the field. The Stormer viscometer is commonly used to determine the viscosity of drilling muds in the laboratory. With the Marsh funnel, the time required for one quart of mud to flow out of the funnel originally filled with 1500 c.c. is often taken as the measurement of viscosity. With the Stormer instrument, drilling mud is tested at a cylinder speed of 600 r.p.m. and by means of calibration data the apparent viscosity is expressed in absolute units. Neither of these instruments is an absolute viscometer, and apparent viscosities obtained with either are influenced by the arbitrarily standardized conditions under which the measurements are made. It is disconcerting to the man in the field to be told that laboratory measurements of the viscosities of a group of muds differ widely, when he has already observed that they have identical viscosities when tested in the Marsh funnel. Drilling muds are not perfect fluids, therefore it is not surprising to find a lack of correlation between the apparent viscosity of a mud as determined with the Marsh funnel and that determined with the Stormer viscometer. The work described here was undertaken to develop a correlation between Marsh-funnel and Stormer viscosity measurements. To a considerable degree this has been accomplished. This study has resulted not only in a better understanding of the two viscosity instruments and the data obtainable from them, but has given considerable information regarding the viscosity characteristics of drilling muds. Hibbard, New York City (communication to the Secretary): The title of Mr. Sargent's paper is somewhat misleading, since the paper itself relates chiefly to various kinds of annealing and their effects, and in very small part only to heat-treatment proper. This term has a well-defined meaning in steel metallurgf, and always includes a rate of cooling faster than the material treated would have in the open air. In bringing about this accelerated rate of cooling, some medium other than air at rest is brought into contact with the heated steel. Usually a liquid (almost always either oil or water) is employed ; but for certain steels a blast of air, and for others an easily fusible or soft metal, such as led (either solid or melted), may be used. Heat-treatment usually includes also subsequent moderate heating, followed, it may be, with another accelerated cooling.

"Coulter's Rainbow and Crooked Falls are situated about five miles below the City of Great Falls. Coulter's, the first of the series in the course of the river, is unimportant and has been submerged by the Rainbow dam. Next below Coulter's is the Rainbow Falls, 47 feet in height. Following Rainbow Falls is the Crooked Falls, 21 feet in height. The power developed at this point is such that the one clam, power house and tail-race utilize the power from all three of the above falls.The development at Rainbow was started October, 1908, and completed July, 1910. It has a total capacity of 21,000 k-w. in generators, and 36,000 h-p. in waterwheels, and operates at 105 foot head. The general scheme of development is typical of what may be called standard practice in the west for plants of medium head, and consists of a low diverting clam, a double pipe line feeding into a balancing reservoir near the plant, and individual pen-stocks supplying the turbines from this reservoir.The dam is a rock-filled crib structure 1,146 feet long and 29 feet high, the up-stream side of which slopes at such an angle that the stability of the clam is assured even under the greatest floods, the weight of the water acting to hold it down, so that the higher the flood the greater the stability. The down-stream side is also sloping and tapers off into a long apron so designed as to take care of any overflow which may occur without shock or commotion. The clam is founded on solid rock throughout its entire length."

PROGRESS in health and safety in the mining field has been greatly affected by war conditions. Some of the instruments commonly used in ventilation and dust prevention work have been practically unobtainable. Much equipment, such as fans, has been purchasable only when it was possible to make positive statements to the effect that it was absolutely necessary for the production of definite quantities of materials essential to the war. Even then, long delays were usually experienced in obtaining such equipment from the manufacturers. These circumstances have, of course, not been conducive to the development of new and better methods, though attention has been directed by governmental agencies towards the recognition of existing hazards to which little attention had previously been paid.
