STRONTIUM is an essential constituent of celestite (strontium sulphate), of the rarer strontianite (strontium carbonate), and of a few very rare minerals. Celestite is the chief ore but strontianite is more valued except for making the purest strontium salts, because of its ease of processing. The public knows strontium mainly as the source of the red flame in fireworks but it has many other uses. PROPERTIES The celestite of commerce is a massive mineral of varying texture: coarsely crystalline, fibrous, bladed, very fine grained or earthy. The color varies greatly with the nature of the impurities but the purer specimens are light blue (Latin, caelum, sky) or white. The strontianite of commerce is a massive mineral, more or less coarsely crystalline. The color varies with the impurities. Distinctive characteristics are effervescence with acids, density (3.68 to 3.71), and crimson strontium flame. A typical British celestite before World War II analyzed: SrSO4, 96.55 pct; SrCO3, 0.17; BaSO4, 0.25; CaSO4, 0.54; MgCO3, 0.15; R20,, 0.90; Si02, 1.38.10 A German strontianite analyzed: SrCO3, 90.9 pct; CaCO3, 7.5; BaCO3, 0.1; Fe2O3, 0.05; A1203, 0.1; SiO2, 0.04; S, 0.1; P, 0.005.10 ORIGIN AND MODE OF OCCURRENCE According to Clarke,9 strontia forms about 0.02 pct of the crust of the earth and is present in most igneous rocks, but in smaller quantities than barium. Under certain conditions, large masses of celestite are deposited from sea water with anhydrite. The presence of large amounts of celestite in some saline deposits and its absence in others suggests that the deposition of celestite depends on whether certain as yet undetermined concentrations of sulphate and chloride ions are reached in the brines. The most extensive of these sedimentary deposits are those of the Keuper (Triassic) in England, of the Zechstein (Permian) in Germany, and of various Cretaceous formations in Texas, Arkansas, and Utah. SINCE the original formulation of fracture mechanics concepts,&apos;y2 relatively little work has related the fracture mechanics description of metal behavior on a gross, structural component scale to the behavior of its microstructural constituents. The purpose of this note is to suggest the utilization of fracture mechanics to describe material behavior on a microscopic scale. A Fracture Concept for Two-Phase Structures. A critical displacement concept considering the tough unidirectional phase in a relatively brittle matrix is first examined. It is assumed that a flaw exists at position 1 as depicted in Fig. 1. As the crack moves from position 1 to 2 the plastic zone could be of the shape described with the size approximated by the Dugdale3 model: where c is the half-crack length, OO is the applied stress, and oyS is the yield strength. Hahn and Rosen-field4 have presented a simple fracture criterion for homogeneous materials based upon the displacement at the crack tip. They also have shown the equivalence of the critical displacement, v*, to fracture toughness by Kc = (2v*oysE)1/2 [2] The displacement at the crack tip is given by and the displacement at any distance in front of the crack tip may be determined knowing the plastic zone size and utilizing the development of Goodier and Field.5 Recalling Fig. 1, the value of v* for fracture in material M1 may be calculated from Eq. [2] providing the critical stress intensity factor is known. As the material is loaded, when vc > vM1 the crack moves from position 1 to position 2 where it encounters the tough second phase. If vc2 < vm2, then the crack will be arrested providing the width of the M2 phase is sufficiently large. This condition is necessary since the displacement at position 2 has increased due to the longer crack length. Thus, the displacement at the distance X (representing the dimension of the second phase) in front of the crack may be larger than the critical displacement for failure in the brittle material. If v, > vm, then failure will proceed in the brittle material. The value of v, may be calculated as indicated above. This latter consideration is the same as predicting fracture of a brittle second phase at some distance in front of a crack located in a ductile matrix. Experimental Evidence. On a macrostructural scale, tungsten wires in a ductile Be-Cu matrix are seen to fracture well ahead of the main crack front in Fig. 2. Utilizing a Kc value of 14.2 ksi-in.1/2 obtained by Schroder et al.6 for as-received tungsten, the critical displacement 2v*, for fracture is calculated from Eq. [2] to be about 6.5 X 10-5 in. The crack tip displacement, 2vc, is calculated from Eq. [3] to be 0.0028 in. indicating that fracture would occur at a considerable distance in front of the crack tip. From the ratio of v*/vc and the plastic zone estimate of Eq. [I], the distance in front of the crack tip at which a tungsten wire should fracture is calculated to be about 0.195 in. As shown in Fig. 2, a fractured wire occurs at a distance of 0.140 in. (fractured in three places), not at 0.250

THIS paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of cold-working and annealing treatments upon the occurrence of preferred orientation in annealed brass wire. The subject has received less consideration than has the same phenomenon in annealed brass sheet or strip, and perhaps very properly so in view of the obvious and undesired results obtained in the forming or drawing of strip having preferred orientation, which results are in contrast with the lack of any spectacular visual evidence in wire. The factors of cold-working and annealing that control preferredness in strip are naturally expected to function similarly in wire. Indeed, one might expect the condition to be commoner in annealed wire, because the severity of the cold-working between anneals in commercial practice is usually much greater for wire than for strip. For example, a wire that is to be finished in the annealed condition on a diameter of 0.040 in. is commonly subjected to a final reduction of 96 per cent between the last two anneals, the large reduction being accomplished in the successive drafts of a multiple-die machine. Wire for rivets, for instance, on 0.125-in. diameter, although given a slight reduction of about 10 per cent after the final anneal, may have been given a prior reduction of 75 to 80 per cent. Barrett1 states the fiber axis of annealed 70-30 brass wire to be [111] with some indication of [100] as a secondary fiber axis. Croft and Sachs2 have reported briefly on some differences in brass wire with random and with preferred orientations. They showed statistical plots of the twin-band angles with respect to the wire axis or direction of drawing as observed on an axial plane. They also pointed out that the resistance of the wire to corrosion-cracking when externally stressed and exposed to a mercurous nitrate solution decreased as the degree of the preferred orientation increased. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE All the wire for the investigation was processed from one. portion as cut for extrusion from a cast billet of the following analysis: 70.13 per cent copper; 0.01 lead; 0.01 iron; 0.02 nickel; 29.83 zinc (by difference). The billet section, 8 in. in diameter, was extruded hot to 3/4 -in. diameter, after which it was processed by alternate cold-drawing and annealing treatments as indicated in Fig. I. The earliest anneals in process were at about 1100°F. and the next to the last reductions by drawing were 58 per cent. The diameter of the finally annealed wire was 0.132 in. Semifinal anneals were at 800°F., 950°F. and 1100°F. and reductions of 47.5, 74, 83.5 and 89.5 per cent were employed in drawing to 0.132 in. THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publications of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photographs are used on such scales as 1/5000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are interpreted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been 3stablished at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

For sixty years—in fact, ever since the inception of the basic steelmaking process —basic slags have been the subject of study by chemists, metallurgists and petrog-raphers! with the purpose of providing a better understanding of the reactions between the slag and the metal during the refining process. The result of this work and of the researches of mineralogists and physical chemists into the chemistry of oxide systems is a considerable body of literature dealing not only with slags themselves but with equilibrium relationships in systems synthesized from pure components. Since any actual slag is a multicom-ponent system more complex than any yet worked out in the laboratory, a complete solution to the problem is still far away. The writers have recently published a paper1 which they believe sheds light on the role of the slag in the elimination of phosphorus and it is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the metallurgical applications of that work. Since the pioneer investigations on the constitution of basic slags carried on by Stead and Risdale, Carnot and Richards, Hilgenstock and others in the I88o&apos;s, a considerable body of literature on this subject has appeared. Many of the more important of these papers were summarized in the previous paper,l therefore they will not be reviewed here. PetRographic Study The present writers have had occasion, over a period of years, to examine petro-graphically a great number of basic steel-making slags having a very wide range of chemical compositions and made under various conditions of operating practice. Although certain of these slags exhibit some unusual features, it is a remarkable fact that the great majority of mature slags show certain typical characteristics, which persist throughout the wide range of chemical compositions. The typical mature slag usually appears under the microscope to consist of two phases. The phase of primary crystallization is light colored and doubly refracting. If separated mechanically and subjected to chemical analysis, it is found to consist essentially of SiO2, CaO, and P2O6. Sometimes, although not usually, two such silicate-phosphate phases are found. The other conspicuous phase is dark in color and optically isotropic, and occurs as the interstitial material between the grains of the light colored phase. This dark colored interstitial phase when analyzed is found to consist essentially of FeO, Fe2O3, MnO, and MgO. In some &apos;lags high in iron oxide, particularly those from low-carbon heats, dicalcium ferrite is found. This phase is dark reddish brown in color and anisotropic.

The Republic of Colombia is the northernmost country of South America. Its northern coast line exteilds from the frontier of Costa Rica to that of Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea. On the west it fronts on the Pacific Ocean, along the Panama Isthmus, and down to Ecuador. It is bounded on the south by Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, which latter country with Venezuela form its boundaries on the east. Its area exceeds 500,000 square miles. It is deemed unnecessary to give here a map of the country. Fig. 1, a map of the department of Antioquia, studied in connection with a good modern general map of Colombia, will explain itself. Fig. 1 contains also some of the region of the Cauca valley, described in this paper. Access.—The interior of Colombia is reached through the ports of Sabanilla and Cartagena on the Caribbean Sea, each of which places is connected with the Magdalena river by a short narrow-gauge railroad, running respectively to Barranquilla and Calamar. From these points lines of river-steamers serve the ports of the upper Magdalena, which they reach in journeys of a week to ten days. After leaving the steamer, a short railroad journey, followed by a long and tedious mule-ride, reaches the cities of Bogota and Medellin. Quibdo, at the head of the navigation of the Atrato, and its most important town, is connected by steamer-service with Cartagena, by canoe-routes with the various districts of the Choco, and by mule-road, at present well-nigh impassable, with the heart of Antioquia. On the western coast the port of Tumaco is a starting-point for canoe- and mule-travel to the southern part of the department of Cauca, while Buenaventura is the port of the central section of the valley of the Cauca,

The growth rate of bainite has been determined by hot-stage metallography in five hypereutectoid high-purity iron-carbon, iron-carbon-chromium, and iron-carbon-nickel alloys. The studies have been confined essentially to lower bainite. The growth rate is independent of time at constant temperature, but both the edgewise and sidewise growth rates increase with increasing temperature. Increasing the carbon content, or adding chromium or nickel, decreases the growth rate without greatly affecting the temperature dependence. The results lead to separate diffusion-controlled models for the edgewise and sidewise growth rates. ALTHOUGH bainite has been subject of many detailed investigations,1,2 the growth mechanism of this intermediate transformation product of steel remains unclear. One difficulty has been that practically all the kinetic measurements have been restricted to studies of the overall reaction rate. Only a limited amount of information3, 4-6 is available on the growth process itself. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the effect of time, temperature and composition on the growth rate of bainite using hot-stage metallography. This method makes it possible to observe continuously the isothermal growth of individual bainitic units because of the surface upheavals accompanying their formation.3 This information is needed to test the existing growth models and to obtain a better understanding of the factors controlling the bainitic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys—The compositions of the alloys used in the present work are shown in Table I. The five alloys were vacuum-melted and cast, and were prepared from high-purity materials. The three iron-carbon alloys were available from the work of Roberts et al.7 in the form of 3/8-in. diam rods.* To facilitate machining, the rods were ing. The rods were then tempered for 3 hr at 650°C to allow machining. The iron-carbon alloys in Table I were selected for investigating the effect of carbon on the bainitic growth rate. Due to the rapidity of the transformations involved, it was not feasible to measure the growth rates in iron-carbon alloys having carbon contents much less than 0.9 pct C. The iron-carbon-chromium and iron-carbon-nickel alloys were selected to study the influence of chromium and nickel on the growth rate at a carbon level of about 1.1 pct C, since this carbon content was intermediate among the iron-carbon alloys. The concentrations of chromium and nickel were chosen to match isothermal trans formation diagrams in the literature.8&apos;9 Hot-Stage—Since the iron-carbon alloys had such low hardenabilities, it was necessary to quench the hot-stage specimens drastically from the austentiz-ing temperature to the isothermal transformation temperature to prevent the formation of pearlite or proeutectoid constituents. A rapid-quenching metal-lographic hot-stage was built for this purpose. A maximum temperature of about 1100°C and quenching rates up to 500°C per sec could be attained with this equipment. The details of the apparatus are described in a recent publication. After being polished and mounted on the hot-stage, the specimen (0.020 in. thick) was protected from oxidation and decarburization during austenitizing by a vacuum of 10-4 to 10-5 mm. The quench to the reaction temperature was accomplished with a helium blast, and the isothermal run at this temperature was conducted in a helium atmosphere. At the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " bucltshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separatetl from the mass, they could be flattencd under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it containetl much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surfacc, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure mas applied; but enough was obtained to undertaltc quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions—one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results: Magnetic Portion. Non-magnetic Portion. IT has been shown that the isothermal transformation of austenite in a special steel can be modified by isothermal holding in the high subcritical transformation range.&apos; Since this treatment potentially leads to increased hardenability, limited testing has been completed to determine if the stabilization effects observed with this treatment can be used to advantage in the heat-treating of 4340 steel. As an index of the effects of the several austenitizing treatments on the hardenability of the steel, Jominy-type hardenability tests were completed for specimens 2.5 in. in diameter and 8 in. long. Since the steel studied is to be used at strength levels where notch sensitivity is of major concern, notch sensitivity after selected austenitizing treatments has been evaluated by notch tensile tests for several specimen sizes. The steel composition and the austenitizing treatments are given in Table I. The test specimens are presented in Fig. 1. The hardenability data are given in Fig. 2 and the notch tensile properties are presented in Fig. 3. The hardenability of the steel investigated when determined by use of the standard Jominy test specimen2 as high and remained essentially unchanged for the different austenitizing treatments. For the larger test specimen, as has been shown by other investigations," the characteristic hardenability indexes are changed and it becomes possible to isolate austenitizing treatments which promote maximum hardenability. The stepped austenitizing treatment promotes higher hardenability as is indicated in Fig. 2. The evaluation of notch sensitivity for very high strength steels is best accomplished by means of the notch tensile test. The experimental conditions of the test, however, modify the notch strengths measured, and in the present experimentation an effort was made to achieve a limiting notch condition by fixing the notch root radius at 0.001 in. while the specimen diameter was allowed to increase from 0.3 to 1.1 in.* For this root radius the notch strength, 0.3-in.-diam specimen, and this trend differs from that for the larger specimens. At the highest tempering temperatures the 1.1-ip.-diam specimens yield comparable results for the austenitizing treatments compared. Charles T. Malcolmson, Chicago, Ill.:—Mr. Blauvelt&apos;s admirable paper is a valuable contribution to the literature on briquetting of coal in this country. It should have a special significance for those interested in the commercial development of the coal-briquette industry. I believe that the data included in Mr. Blauvelt&apos;s paper will be particularly useful because they represent costs taken from a briquette-plant in actual operation. There are several points touched on in Mr. Blauvelt&apos;s paper which may bear comment in the way of emphasis rather than of criticism. In the first place, he has stated a fact which becomes axiomatic to any one who has had any experience in the design, building, or operation of coal-briquette plants, and that is, that the press is only one factor in the successful opera-

In a former paper on this subject,&apos; I summarized Murgue&apos;s theory and experiments, and presented a large number of tests of mine-fans, stating some conclusions, " more or less warranted by the evidence," as to design, capacity and efficiency. Since that time the very valuable report of Mr. M. Walton Brown: Committee on Mechanical Ventikators, Institution of Mining Engineers, has appeared, and I have made additional experiments which tend to clear up some points in connection with this subject. The equation of continuity for the hydrogen reduction of hematite in a fixed bed of closely-sized particles is solved assuming a flat velocity profile, negligible temperature gradients, md negligible axial diffusion. A kinetic expression from the literature is used which assumes the reduction process is controlled at the oxide-metal interface. The integral fractional conversion is computed, and the importance of particle diameter, flow mte, temperature, bulk axial diffusion, and inter- and intra-particle mass trarnsfer is predicted. Comparison with experimental data suggests one or more additional undefined variable(s) is significant. Equipment modifications are suggested for fidture experimentcll work. WITH the increasing desire to "design" the ore feed of a blast furnace, it has become necessary to define more quantitatively the process variables and to evaluate the extent of their control upon the reduction process. The bulk of the work reported in the literature has centered about the reduction of single particles; however, the blast furnace process more closely resembles reduction of a fixed bed than that of single particles. To simplify this analysis, the isothermal reduction by hydrogen of a natural hematite in a fixed bed of closely-sized particles is examined. With appropriate modifications in the kinetic and flow rate expressions, the approach employed should be extensible to mixtures of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and inert nitrogen, and to adi-abatic conditions, thus approaching the blast furnace process more closely. The fixed bed variables which are investigated in this study are particle diameter, flow rate, temperature, and bulk axial diffusion, as well as inter-and intra-particle mass transfer. Of particular interest is the effect of particle size upon fractional conversion for a bed operating under constant pressure drop. The constant pressure drop concept bears a close resemblance to the blast furnace process, where regions of larger particles may provide a greater permeability to divert most of the reducing gas flow from the regions of smaller ore particles. Under such conditions one would expect qualitatively that, for sufficiently small particle sizes where the flow rate is small and the total surface area is large, the reduction rate would be limited by the gas flow rate. Initially the gas entering the bed reacts very rapidly and the composition approaches the equilibrium conversion value a short distance from the reactor inlet. This concentration "wave-front" then moves up the bed as the flow of reducing gas is continued, leaving in its wake an ever increasing layer of reduced particles. Providing that the reducing gas leaves the bed at equilibrium concentrations, conversion is expected to increase with an increase in flow rate, and hence with an increase in particle diemater. Conversely, for sufficiently large particles the flow rate will be high but the surface area available for reaction will limit the reduction rate. Since the total surface area decreases with an increase in particle size, conversion, in this case, is expected to decrease as the particle diameter is increased. It is clear then that between these two extremes an optimum particle diameter must exist. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT Above the temperature where wiistite is stable (about 560°C) the reduction of hematite proceeds through the series Fe2O3/Fe3O4/FeO/Fe. On the basis of microstructural studies and earlier work, Edström1 has postulated a mechanism for the reduction of an ideal hematite lattice: 1) Iron phase formation at the boundary between wiistite, iron, and gas (for sufficiently porous iron). 2) Diffusion of iron across a wustite layer. 3) Phase boundary reaction of Fe3O4 to FeO. 4) Diffusion across a dense magnetite layer. 5) Phase-boundary reaction of Fe2O3 to Fe3O4. According to the mechanism postulated, gaseous reaction product has to be removed only at the boundaries between wüstite and iron or gas, the only possible exception being enveloped Fe3O4 specks. On this basis McKewan2,3 has proposed that one may consider the hematite reduction process as a simple two-phase system of oxide/metal. There was a notable decrease in drilling operations in 1940 in all of the Rocky Mountain states except Montana, where the two large fields on the Canadian border, Cut Bank and Kevin-Sunburst, were espe-cially active. The expanding markets for Montana natural gas made necessary the more intensive development of such fields as Rowdoin, Cedar Creek and Devon. While there were no important oil and gas discoveries in 1940 in any of the Rocky Mountain states, a few small pools were opened, which may constitute separate areas but may prove with later development to be extensions of old fields. Some of the old fields were extended and deeper pay zones were discovered in others. These have given the areas greatly increased oil reserves and therefore are just as important as the discovery of new fields. The more important of the developments in 1940 are given, by states, in the following paragraphs. Colorado Hiawatha Field, Moffat County.—The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. began the development at Hiawatha of its oil reserves, which were discovered in about 1929, and late in the summer oil began moving from the field by truck to the shipping point at Rock Springs, Wyoming. The Hiawatha field of northwestern Moffat County was discovered in 1927 by the Sormir Petroleum Co., with the completion of No. r Florence Wilson for 4,5,000,000 cu. ft. of gas a day from a Wasatch sand lens at 2200 it. In later development of the field, oil showings were reported in several wells but no development of this resource was undertaken until 1940, when a test of the oil possibilities was started with the release in April of a location for No. 5-A Wilson on the S\W. SW. NW. of sec. 23-1zN-1ooW., on the east side of the field. The Well had an initial production of 327 bbl. of oil a day pumping from three Wasatch (Tertiary) sands between 2005 and 2540 ft. It was drilled to 2562 ft., where the 65/8-in. casing was cemented and gun-perforated at 2005 to 2125 ft., 2260 to 2335 ft. and 2513 to 2540 ft. At the end of the year, this well was averaging zoo bbl. of oil per day, pumping. Two other wells were drilled for oil on Hiawatha during the summer—one a small well of 60 bbl. per day and the other a small gas well. Powder Wash Field, Moffat County.—The development of the Powder Wash field in northwestern Colorado was resumed in 1940 by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., with the release of a location for No. 2-A Musser in the CWL.NW.SE. of sec. 4-1rN-97W. The Powder Wash field was discovered in 1931 by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. and the discovery well, No. I Musser, on C.NW. of sec. 5-IIN-97W., was completed at 2152 ft. in the Hiawatha member of the nonmarine Wasatch for-mation for an open flow of 34,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day under a natural pressure of 685 lb. per sq. inch. THE electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune, Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer, Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack, Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Kochendörffer and others.1 The writer of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray to white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (SiC) and graphite (C). In this work, he has found the curious phenomenon of barium- carbonate.

The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, stability at 200°C, and structure of annealed Si-Cr films have been studied as a function of film cowposition. Colorimetric analyses of the films indicated 20 to 60 wt pct Cr over the resistivity range of 1 to 10-4 ohm-cm. Resistors were delinealed by photolithographic etching, contacted with aluminum, and mounted in TO-5 packages. The average temperature coefjicient of resistance, a, between 50" and 150°C is related empirically to the film resistivity, p, by a (ppm per °C) = -2900 - 1140 log p (ohm-cm). Near a resistivity of 3.5 x 10-3 ohm-ctn (30 at. pct Cr) , the temperature coefficient changes from positive to negative. The temperature at which the resistance maximum occurs increases with decreasing resistivity. The conduction mechanism between —196" and +360 C appears to have two components—an activated conduction dominating a1 lord chromium content and higher temperatures and a linearly temperature-dependent conduction dominating at high chromium content and low temperatures. Electron diffraction patterns showed the films to consist of Cr3Si and amorphous silicon. Resistors thicker than 150A typically drifted less than 0.6 pct after 5000 hr stor-age at 200°C. Resistors as thin as approxinzately 80°A that had a silicon overlayer showed similar stability. Such films had sheet resistivities of 10 kilohm per square and temperature coefficients near —600 ppm per "c. THIN-FILM resistors having sheet resistivities greater than 1 kilohm per square are required in many integrated circuit applications. A process for producing such resistors should be compatible with present circuit fabrication and packaging, including exposure to maximum temperatures of 300° to 570°C during contact alloying, die-attach, and ceramic package sealing. In addition, the resistors should have a low temperature coefficient of resistance and change less than 1 pct during storage at temperatures up to 200°C for 1000 hr or longer. Reports of work beginning in 1949 at Battelle Memorial Institute indicated that, among other materials, the silicides of chromium, Cr-Co, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten were worthy of further study as high-stability resistive films. Later work on Si-Cr films vacuum-deposited by flash evaporation from a tungsten boat1 led to the conclusion that Si-Cr had "excellent properties for development into high- stability ... resistive elements". More recently, Si-Cr films have been vacuum-deposited from a tantalum boat,2 from a BeO-coated tantalum boat,3 by flash evaporation from an electron-beam-heated tungsten Source,4 and by triode sputtering.5 This paper describes a study of Si-Cr films vacuum-deposited by electron-beam heating of Si-Cr alloys. Resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, stability at 200°C, and structure were studied as a function of film composition. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Film Deposition. Si-Cr sources were prepared by vacuum-melting pressed pellets of mixtures of powdered chromium (99.9 pct, -100 mesh, Lunex Co., Pleasant Valley, Iowa) and silicon (99.99 pct, -325 mesh, United Mineral and Chemical Co., New York). A permanent-magnet focused electron-beam gun having a water-cooled copper crucible was used to heat the pellet until complete melting occurred. The mixture was then kept molten for an additional 5 min. The alloy thus formed was used as the source material for Si-Cr film depositions using the same electron-beam gun. Pieces of semiconductor-grade silicon ingots were used as sources for silicon depositions. The films were deposited within a standard vacuum evaporator having an 18-in.-diam Pyrex bell jar, a liquid-nitrogen-cooled trap, and a Consolidated Vacuum Corp. 6-in. diffusion pump containing Dow Corning DC-705 pump fluid. IN THE first report1 disks of steel of- known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to, impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive charges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was progressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive
