The object of this investigation was to determine with a vertical magnetic variometer the extent of the titaniferous ore deposit that occurs not far from Ivry in Terrebonne County, Quebec, about 70 miles north of Montreal. The Ivry mine, on lots 37 and 38 of range V, Beres-ford township, Quebec, is one of the largest and most accessible to transportation of the deposits of ilmenite in Quebec. The ore consists of an aggregate of ilmenite anhedra serving as host for numerous fine plaques of hematite. No magnetite is known from any occurrence near this lot, and in this way the deposit differs from many others that contain a large percentage of magnetite with the ilmenite. The deposit at Ivry thus has much lower magnetic susceptibility than those containing abundant magnetite, and a sensitive magnetometer was necessary for the work, although a body of magnetite with ilmenite about a mile from the Ivry mine was successfully prospected with a dip needle. The principal orebody is exposed in a quarry known as the Ivry mine, from which about 16,000 tons of ore have been shipped. Small exposures of ilmenite isolated by drift serve to show the presence at the surface of some of the bodies indicated by the magnetometer, but most of the hill is covered with glacial till and second growth hardwood. At the lower levels the till gives place to fluvioglacial sands and gravels from which the forest has been cleared. The increasing thickness of the sand and gravel as the hill descends makes the tracing outward of the deposits from the rocky knob of anorthosite a difficult matter. Within the orebodies too, some masses of anorthosite persist, which may account for some local irregularities. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph, taken by reflected light, of a typical specimen of the ore. The dark patches are hematite and the light parts are ilmenite No trace of magnetite was found. Pig. 2 is a photomicrograph of a thin section of the country rock showing the texture of the anorthosite. The mean of four analyses quoted by Robinson1 is: titaninm, 19.26 per cent; iron 45.41 per cent. IN the mining and handling of sulphide ores, some degree of oxidation takes place on the sulphide surfaces, which are exposed to the atmosphere. It is, moreover, well known that the oxidation compounds formed are a factor when such ores are subsequently treated by flotation. Modern operating technique and reagents are capable of contending with this condition to a major degree, provided that the proportions of the reagents used are varied correctly. This is particularly true at the Tennessee Copper Co., where the ore treated contains pyrrhotite in addition to other sulphides. A number of soluble salts, some of which are unstable, can be formed during the oxidation of the sulphide ores. Those unstable salts, whose oxygen requirements are unsatisfied, are constantly changing to more stable forms because oxygen reacts with them during the crushing, grinding and other operations of ore preparation. We add no chemicals of any kind to the ore pulp in its preparation for flotation feed. Consequently the only compounds that are present in the flotation feed are those produced by the natural oxidation of the ore in the presence of air and water. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is composed of from 60 to 70 per cent sulphides and from 40 to 30 per cent nonsulphide material. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the nature of these various oxygensulphur compounds nor their effect on flotation, but to describe a method for [ ] correcting the effect. Suffice it to say that we have found that the reducing sulphur and oxygen salts have a depressing action on our bulk flotation process.1 From long experience we find that the best means of correcting for this variation in our work is to increase or decrease the quantity of xanthate, the promoting agent, as the quantity of the reducing salts increases or decreases. INTRODUCTION Nuclear waste has been generated since the time of the Curie's and continues to be generated worldwide at an ever-increasing rate as the world will (and should) rely more and more upon fission (and hopefully fusion) for power. Also, the needs for strategic weapons will also generate so-called defense wastes. The largest class of high level nuclear waste (HLW) is spent fuel, the tail end of the nuclear reactor fuel cycle. At present, spent fuel is stored at the reactors producing it or at a few accepting places for away-from-reactor storage. All such storage facilities, as presently constructed, will begin to run out of usable storage space during the next decade or so. Congress enacted and President Reagan signed into law in early 1983 the National Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982. This law provides for the permanent isolation of nuclear waste in deep geologic repositories. The Act sets 1998 as the date at which the first repository should be operational. This date is extremely ambitious, and the Department of Energy (DOE), which is charged with the responsibility of constructing and operating repositories, admits that this date will slip by at least a few years. The Act also provides for licensing of repositories by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in a fashion very similar to nuclear power generating reactors. This requirement imposes a very special rigor on the analyses, investigations, designs, construction, and operation of repositories so as to assure the protection of the public and the environment from radioactive contamination. In addition the states and affected Indian Tribes must be consulted, especially concerning siting, and, needless to say, no one wants a HLW repository in their back yard.

IT is not necessary to enter into a long discussion of ordinary bells, because every master carpenter or blacksmith knows how to make those levers with a crossbar that are called storks. Theodore Dehon Rand was appointed Treasurer of the American Institute of Mining Engineers by the Council, at the Boston meeting of February, 1873, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of the treasurer who had been elected at the first meeting in Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871. He was elected by the Institute to this offce in the following May, and yearly thereafter until 1903. He often alluded with amusement to the abrupt way in which he was injected into this position, by my coming to his office and asking him to accept the appointment as Treasurer, on the ground that he was eminently fitted for the position by reason of his legal and business knowledge, his interest in geology and mineralogy, and more particularly because he was a neighbor of the person (to wit, myself) who was slated for the Secretaryship, and they could thus convenient.ly confer on Institute matters. When the electrical system for a surface or open pit mine is designed, four major considerations should be satisfied in the following order: safety, reliability, flexibility, and cost. Careful planning initially will make expansion for future growth economical as well as possible without extended shutdown of operations. Electrical requirements in surface and open pit mining can be divided into three categories: main substation, plant power, and pit distribution. These systems are integral to each other, but will be dealt with separately here. 11.2-1. Main Substation. A main substation for a mining operation may vary from a 500 kva transformer supplying 480-v power to motor-driven pumps and conveyors, to a 50,000 kva substation serving a large beneficiation plant or a large strip mining operation. Regardless of size, it should be designed with the realization that a failure of the main substation will totally shut down the operation (Fig. 11.2-1.). Location of a main substation usually is a compromise between expense of running the incoming high-voltage transmission lines and the voltage drop of long secondary runs. Based on a geological survey for immediate and future areas of excavation, the main substation should be located as near to the center of load as possible. The site should be out of the blasting area, readily accessible to authorized personnel, and situated where prevailing winds will keep it free from dust or snow. DISCONNECTS AND OVERLOAD PROTECTION. The main substation should have a primary disconnecting device-either a pole top gang-operated switch and fuses of adequate interrupting capacity or, preferably, an oil circuit breaker with properly coordinated relay protection.

In the Anthracite Region there are considerable areas where the original mining was done 50 or more years ago. In this original mining, the pillars that were left proved inadequate in size for the support of the roof, which has since collapsed as a result of squeezes, and completely filled the original openings. In an endeavor to recover the coal which remains in the pillars in such areas, the reopening cost for development, as well as for pillar recovery, has been excessive in many instances. Various methods have been tried out with a view to lowering the cost, in order that the greatest possible percentage of recovery of the reserve tonnage may be realized economically. Ordinary hand mining necessitates the driving of development road 10 ft. wide in the clear between timber legs, with 6 ft. of clearance over the rail to accommodate mine cars; collars or crossbars on the timber sets have been difficult to maintain in these openings in the heavily caved condition, especially in beds where the overburden is great,. Numerous failures have occurred on these development road timbers because of roof movement resulting from removal of pillars. The actual removal of pillars from this development work has been costly because full-width openings for transporting mine cars to the face have to be maintained by cleaning caved material from alongside the pillars, or skipping up along the pillars where pillars of sufficient width are found. Shaker-chute Methods A method of developing such caved conditions and recovering pillars tributary to this development, utilizing shaker chutes, is being tried out with considerable success at Loree colliery. An outline of the chute and apparatus is shown in Fig. 1, which indicates the location of pillars and caved material. The cost of both labor and material required in the recovery of such coal is considerably less than by ordinary hand methods. In order to try out this method of mining a location was chosen where a tightly caved area had been developed by ordinary hand methods to within 300 ft. of the property line. Broadly speaking, it may be said that the engineer has two major responsibilities: One is to recommend the choosing of proper machinery and equipment; the other, to assist in the simplification of design, determination of method, and advise about the most suitable material to be used. The products of powder metallurgy enter broadly into both these fields. The oil-cushion, self-lubricating bearing surface on a machine part makes for better machinery and factory equipment, often proves a life-saver in curing difficulties where bearings are overloaded or inaccessible for lubrication, or on installations that with normal practice constitute a problem entailing frequent repairs. On the other hand, other parts may require low porosity approaching solidity. In the second field, powder metallurgy provides many possibilities for improved products, improved performance, solving of technical problems, saving of weight, quiet operation, higher factors of safety, greater flexibility, attractive economies, and so on. Parts We of the automotive industries are making many powdered-metal war-machine parts, both ferrous and nonferrous, including gears, external and internal; ratchets, both external and internal; levers; pillow blocks; sliding blocks; cams; gibs; hubs with external and internal splines, and similar units. Powdered metals play an important part in our war work, as they did in peacetime in the manufacturing of passenger cars and trucks. The art of powder metallurgy is not a panacea. Although on certain parts such operations as turning, boring, facing, reaming, counterboring, milling, countersinking. chamfering, broaching, hobbing, profiling. trepanning, gear cutting, grinding, etc., can be eliminated, there will always be the need for machine tools. Advantages of Powder Metallurgy Simple machining operations often are eliminated by using powdered metal, and also many other intricate operations, some of which are of the type impossible to perform on the most modern production equipment; for instance, an external spline on a flange hub, where the spline must continue to the flange face and at full depth. Another important feature is that some of the machine parts may require a self-lubricating surface at one or more points; for example, proper lubrication of a sliding splined spool, while ordinarily most digcuit, is accomplished automatically with a self-lubricating powdered-metal bearing. Frequently machine parts are made with physical, mechanical and technological advantages unobtainable from cast or forged metals of similar analysis. Thus powder metallurgy offers the designing engineer broader latitude. Similarly, the engineer may take advantage of powder metallurgy in his teamwork with other departments. Another important advantage in powder metallurgy for machine parts is the relatively short time required for tool-up.

The number of wells drilled in Ohio in 1943 was slightly in excess of the number drilled in 1942. Compared with the average annual completions for the five years preceding, the year 1943 was short 11 per cent, hut the average initial volume of gas wells was considerably improved. In 1942 the average initial open flow per gas well was 668 M cu. ft., whereas in 1943 the average was 913 M cu. ft. Although no large gas-producing areas were discovered during the year under review, some 30 small pools were found in 17 of the counties of eastern Ohio. These new pools averaged about 300 acres each, and most of them were not extensions but were separate pools adjacent to older production. The Clinton sand furnished most of these discoveries, although six were from the Berea, one was Newburg, and three were shallow sands. No discoveries were made outside former producing counties, and there was no new development the Trenton area of western Ohio. The number of oil wells decreased from 181 drilled in 1942, to 170 in the year 1943. The production of Pennsylvania-grade oil increased 7644 bbl. The total Corning production, however, decreased 91,325 bbl. The present price of Corning-grade oil, $1.31 per bbl., is too low, in the opinion of the operator, to justify exploration. Until something is done in correcting the price level of Corning grade, the production probably will continue to decline. The oil industry in Ohio is making a concentrated effort toward increased production and improved methods of recovering Pennsylvania-grade oil, and a.s this report is written a research and engineering program is being formulated for the benefit and information of the various producers of that grade in Ohio.

Although adequate removal of cuttings from beneath a drill bit is important for efficient drilling operations, very little basic data are available relative to the fundamentals of chip removal by hydraulic jets. A discussion is presented in this paper of an experimental investigation of the jetting action of hydraulic jets in removing loose particles from the bottom of a cylindrical hole. Conditions for which the jet is no longer capable of removing chips from the bottom of the hole are determined. This situation represents equilibrium between the chip removal force and chip Bolddown forces such as gravity and pressure. In most of the tests loose particles were jetted with water or a water-glycerine mixture to determine the dependence of chip removal on hole size, jet size, height of jet off bottom of hole, flow rate, particle density and fluid viscosity. ,A test with a pressurized mud system indicated that relatively low pressures can completely overcome the removal action of a hydraulic jet. Although the system studied herein is not directly applicable to a rotary drill bit, the work with such simplified systems can provide a better understanding of the chip removal action of jets, and with logical extensions it may provide a reasonable basis for the best use of fluid jets in drilling. INTRODUCTION The primary deterrent to maximum drilling rates is the inability of the drilling system to remove rock cuttings efficiently enough to prevent interference with the drilling action.1-2 The objective of chip removal studies is to permit predicting and controlling removal forces under downhole drilling conditions. Conditions at the bottom of a hole during rotary drilling are exceedingly complex and are not likely to be described in a quantitative way by investigations in terms of the total drilling action until a better understanding is developed of the simplified components of the problem.3 The present study is concerned with the elementary condition of removal of chips by a single central jet. Even this relatively simple model provides mathematical difficulties because of the turbulent nature of the flow from the jet and because of the shape of the bottom of the hole beneath the jet. Theoretical and experimental studies have been made of turbulent jets impinging normally on an infinite body and deductions based on analytical solutions to simplified problems can give some insight into the problem of cutting removal by a jet. However, because of the present lack of understanding of the behavior of the interaction between the fluid jet and the chips being removed, an experimental approach was chosen for the present study. Methods have been developed for maximizing hydraulic horsepower, impact force and jet velocity; but whether maximizing these parameters maximizes chip removal with present drilling bits has not been demonstrated. Simplifying the problem of chip removal may make it possible to develop some understanding of the manner in which the jet velocity is dissipated. Better understanding of a simple case should materially assist in extending analysis to more complicated cases. Thus, we are not concerned in the present study with the rock fracturing process itself but only with the removal of the debris from the bottom of the hole. A problem which is quite similar to the chip removal problem is the suspension of solids in stirred vessels. This problem has been studied by the chemical industry and correlations have been obtained by dimensional analysis which permit the design of mixing vats7 An approach similar to that used in the mixing vat problem is used in the analysis of the jetting data in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The test equipment arrangement shown sche-matically in Fig. 1 allows the jetting action to remove particles until an equilibrium height is attained for each combination of hole size, jet size and flow rate.*** Equilibrium conditions require that the removal force is unable to remove additional particles. This balance between holddown and removal forces implies a relationship between the two forces which is constant for the particular system. When the holddown forces are constant,

The use of Na-montmorillonite clay binders (Western Bentonite) in the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates is well established as is the idea that alternative binders must be found. 1-6 This note summarizes work done7 in evaluating a Wisconsin montmorillonite clay binder. The clay occurs in irregualr beds overlying the Prairie du Chien Dolomite and the St. Peters Sandstone near Hersey, St. Croix County.

CHAIRMAN DOUGHTON of the House Ways and Means Committee announced on September 23 that the committee has scheduled public hearings on an excess-profits tax, beginning on November 15, 1950. In the meantime, the staff of the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation and the staff of the Treasury Department are to confer jointly on this question in the hope that such conferences may result in the preparation of a report on excess-profits tax proposals which could be used as a basis for testimony before the committee. It is thought that this procedure may aid in the draft of an excess-profits tax bill for introduction in the House when Congress reconvenes on November 27.

Banner Mining Co. became interested in this Tucson area early in 1950, and after several months of reconnaissance work, a lease-option purchase agreement was concluded on the Mineral Hill property which allowed time for considerable exploration and development work. Unwatering of the mine began in August 1951 after electric power lines were extended from nearby Tucson. The unwatering and rehabilitation work was done under a Defense Minerals Exploration Administration project and was completed in December 1952 after about 15 months of tedious work. The mine had been under water for more than 30 years with resulting cave-ins and timber deterioration. In some badly caved areas spiling was necessary to reopen the old drifts and crosscuts.

In its many forms, the turbine has greater latitude of application than any other mixing device. It is readily adaptable to all tank shapes, from the shallow pan to the tall and narrow stovepipe. Although turbine mixers can be adapted to most tank conformations, experience has shown that there is a preferred shape for optimum efficiency in each service. In the accompanying drawings this relationship is illustrated by the shallower tank for slurry suspension. The taller tank is preferable for continuous staged systems, or maximum retention of the gas phase in absorption. No single turbine covers the entire range of these applications with maximum efficiency. The back-sloped blade offers maximum power economy. The straight blade develops a higher discharge velocity for the dispersion type of service requiring localized shear. The same high shear environment is provided by the back-sloped impeller with stator ring assembly, which permits the most positive discharge control, Fig. 1. Positive stream control is critical in solids suspensions.

H OWEVER extensively water-lines may be laid in the mine for fire fighting purposes, there are still, usually, points being worked temporarily, development, stoping or other work of a temporary or incidental nature where it is considered that the expense of laying fire-lines is not warranted. While the laying of water-lines in some sections of the mine may not be warranted, in most metal mines it is necessary to lay an air-line to all working places. In the mine of the United Verde Extension Mining Co., at Jerome, Ariz., advantage has been taken of this fact by providing a means of by-passing the water at the end of the water-line into the air-line in case an emergency arises. By this means the 2-in. air-line can be quickly converted into a water-line for fighting fire which might otherwise be beyond the reach of the water-lines.
