I. INTRODUCTION. AT the Seventy-sixth meeting of the Institute, held in New York, N. Y., February, 1899, I presented a, paper on this subject entitled, Coal-Cutting Machinery,' which has become somewhat out of date, in view of the decade's development in this feature of the coal-minim industry. It should be explained that the present paper is limited to the use of mining-machines in bituminous mines. Practically all of the anthracite mined is ?shot from the solid," no undercutting being done. Anthracite-mining is therefore not considered in the statistics or other references. The statistical record as compiled by the United States Geological Survey shows that in 1898, the year preceding the presentation of my former paper, there were 32,413,144 short tons of coal undercut by the use of machines. In 1907 the machine-mined coal-product amounted to 138,547,823 short tons. In sympathy with the general decrease in coal-production during 1908, the output of machine-mined coal decreased to 123,183,334 short tons, but the proportion of machine-mined coal to the total output, nevertheless, showed an increase, from 35.1 per cent in 1907 to 37 per cent in 1908. In 1898 only 19.5 per cent. of the total product was undercut by the use of machines. The number of undercutting-machines in use in the bituminous mines of the United States has increased from 2,622 in 1898 to 11,144 in 1907, and to 11,569 in 1908. The total production of bituminous coal in the United States in 1908 was almost exactly double that of 1898, while the machine- * Published by permission of the Director of the U. S. WE should like to point out that Hu and cline.1 in their study of the recrystallization of titanium, have obtained data which appear very important for accurately determining the dependence of hardness on grain size for this material. It has been proposed2,3 that the macrohardness. H. of a poly crystalline material should depend on its average grain diameter, l. in accordance with the relationship: H =H0 + kHl-1/2 [1] where Ho and kH are experimental constants. This relationship follows from the hardness dependence on yield stress or flow stress4 and. thence. the Hall-Petch stress-grain size relations.5'6 Fig. 1 shows the Diamond Pyramid Hardness. Dph. values vs the reciprocal square root of the average diameter of the recrystallized grains, taken from the titanium data reported by Hu and Cline. The data in this figure give a linear relationship for the hardness over a wider range of grain diameters than anyone has previously measured. The data are not linear, for example. on an I-1 or l-1/3 scale. At the very large grain sizes the data are in reasonable agreement with measurements earlier reported by Holden, Ogden, and Jaffee.7 For the grain sizes smaller than 1 µ, which correspond in Fig. 1 to hardness values greater than 150, the material was reported as not being completely recrystallized and, therefore, these data appear less meaningful as far as the hardness dependence on grain size is concerned. However. it has been suggested by other investigators that deformed materials exhibit strengthening due to an effective grain size refinement even in the unrecrys-tallized condition.8-10 Also. Hu and Cline have shown that a change in texture occurs for titanium during the recrystallization process and. especially. following it. The influence of this texture change on the hardness-grain size relation would be expected to be less than that reflected in the unidirectional stress-strain behavior, even for an hcp material. because of the actual combined stress system which applies for the hardness test. For, at least, certain combined stresses, average values of the orientation factors should still occur in the stress-grain size analysis of a material exhibiting a preferred orientation.' We previously suggested3 that the experimental constants. H0 and kH. from the Meyer hardness-grain size relation should be correlated with the Hall-Petch constants, uoy and ky.5,6 Our recent study" of the Hall-Petch relation and the hardness-grain size results which obtain for a number of polycrystalline materials shows that: The inequality [2] is explained by noting that the hardness should be correlated. perhaps, with the flow stress at some value of strain, as suggested by Dugdale,12 and. also, that the influence of strain on the Hall-Petch relation is to increase uo and not change k very much." Normally. Dph values and Brinell hardness values are nearly equivalent to each other and to the Meyer hardness number. For the case of titanium, then. the inequality [2] may be evaluated using the experimental values of ao = 8.0 kg per sq mm and ky = 1.3 kg per mm3/2 obtained from the experiment of Guard.6,13 Thus, (Ho/uo) = 12 and (kH/k3) = 1.3. The diffusion rate of hydrogen in liquid iron has been measured by a gas-liquid metal diffusion cell technique. The diffusion cell was formed by immersing an alumina tube containing hydrogen gas at 1 atm in a bath of stagnant liquid iron. The change in the composition of the melt in the cell was determined by measuring the rate of absorption of the gas in the cell. The appropriate solution to Fick's second law was used to examine the data and calculate diffusivi-ties. The absorption of hydrogen in stagnant pure liquid iron has been found to be diffusion-controlled. The results show that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, of hydrogen in pure iron in the range of 1547" to 1726°C can be represented by the following Arrhenius relation: D(sq cnz per sec) = 3.2 x X exp(- 3300 i 1800/RT) where the uncertainty in the activation energy corresponds to the YO pct confidence level. Oxygen in the melt (above 0.015 pct 2) increased the apparent rate of absorption of hydrogen. The importance of diffusion data on liquid metals for predicting the rates of certain metallurgical processes has been recognized for a long time. Moreover, these data are much needed to test and develop theory for diffusion in liquid metals. Despite this practical and theoretical interest, however, relatively little reliable information about diffusion in liquid metals is available in the literature. This is particularly true for gas components such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen in liquid metals, where almost no data on chemical diffusion coefficients are to be found. This is probably due to a multitude of experimental difficulties particularly associated with high-temperature melts. In an effort to fill this gap in information, a research program was undertaken to study the diffusivities and rates of solution of gases in liquid metals. This paper presents the results of a study of the diffusion of hydrogen in liquid iron. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two methods for the study of the kinetics of dissolution of gases in liquid metals are being employed in this laboratory. Both involve the measurement of the volume of gas absorbed by the melt as a function of time and as such both avoid the uncertainties involved in chemical analyses of quenched samples for relatively small amounts of gas. In the first method, the gas dissolves in an inductively stirred melt and, in the absence of a slow surface reaction, the results are often interpreted in terms of mass transport across a liquid "boundary layer" between the homogeneous gas phase and well-stirred part of the melt. Other interpretations of the results of such experiments have also been described in the literature.1'5 In the second method a gas-liquid metal diffusion cell is used.' The gas dissolves in a cylindrical column of stagnant liquid metal and, in the absence of a slow surface reaction, the results are interpreted in terms of a non-steady-state diffusion solution to Fick's second law. The weakness of the first method is that while it gives information on the mechanism of absorption by stirred melts it yields an overall rate constant which even in the simplest cases depends on the nature and the thickness of the "mass transport layer" or "boundary layer". It yields no values of diffusion coefficients. The second method was used in this research because in many cases it is possible to determine the diffusion coefficient of the gas component in the liquid metal. In this research it has been utilized to measure diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in liquid iron. The apparatus used was essentially the same as that described by Mizikar, Grace, and par lee but certain modifications have been introduced to meet the elevated temperatures and special conditions of this research. Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the apparatus and Table I gives the identification of various parts in this figure. The diffusion cell, shown in detail in Fig. 2, was formed by immersing an impervious alumina tube (hereafter called absorption tube) in a bath of pure liquid iron contained in an alumina crucible. Two types of tubes were used, Morganite triangle RR and McDanel AP35. The crucible was contained in a vertical impervious alumina combustion tube (32 mm ID by 914 mm long) which was closed at both ends by water-cooled brass heads employing O-ring compression seals, Fig. 1. The term "clay" is somewhat ambiguous un¬less specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: (1) as a diverse group of fine-¬grained minerals, (2) as a rock term, and (3) as a particle-size term. Actually, most persons using the term "clay" realize that it has several meanings, and in most instances they define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define be¬cause of the wide variety of materials that com¬pose it; therefore, the definition must be gen¬eral. Clay is a natural earthy, fine-grained ma¬terial composed largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates composed mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many defini¬tions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic; for example, halloysite and flint clay. As a particle-size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum-size particles in the clay-size grade are defined differently on various grade scales, Soil investigators and mineralogists gen¬erally use 2 micrometers as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than ap¬proximately 4 micrometers. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term "clay" for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or ar¬gillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally un¬derstood by those who use it. Clay is an abun¬dant natural raw material, and it has an amaz¬ing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial min¬erals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1970, 1971, and 1972 production and values according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1972). Adequate reliable statistical data on which to summarize world production of clay are un¬available; this paragraph outlines the world re¬quirements for clay only in a very general way. According to one estimate, the world bentonite production in 1972 was 3.5 million tons (Anon., 1973a), but in the authors' opinion it was prob¬ably at least 5 million tons. The total fuller's earth produced was at least 1.5 million tons and may have been as much as 2 million tons. The total world kaolin production in 1972 was more than 10 million tons. Approximately 7 million tons of this total was produced in only two regions-the Georgia-South Carolina kaolin belt in the United States and the Cornwall re¬gion, United Kingdom. The world's 1972 out¬put of ball clay, which is also produced pri¬marily in the United States and the United Kingdom, was approximately 1.5 million tons or perhaps a little more. The total world fire clay production in 1972 was probably about one and one-half to two times and the miscellaneous clay production three times the United States production. As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodi¬ties, each having somewhat different mineral¬ogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. Development during 1942 led to the discovery of 26 new fields in the Texas Gulf Coast, as compared with 27 during 1941. Of these, 19 are classed as oil fields, 4 distillate fields, and 3 gas fields. Production from the new fields amounted to 614,467 bbl. to October 1942. Producing Sections.—Discoveries in I942, compared with the previous two years, classified by producing formations, are shown in the following table: It is interesting to note the increase in Wilcox discoveries due to the extensive geophysical campaign that has been con. ducted since 1940. Drilling.—During the year 688 wells were drilled, of which 574 produced oil or gas and 114 were dry. This represents a considerable decline in activity over the previous year, when 1405 wells were drilled in the area, of which 1081 were producers and 324 failures. Jackson County continued to hold the lead, with 222 wells completed. Production.—-Despite curtailed drilling, production amounted to 118,009,451 bbl. for 1942, indicating a slight increase over the 113,726,893 bbl. produced during 1941. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include condensate and distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties most of the activities referred to. The number of wells drilled includes only field wells; not wildcats. Outstanding Fields of 1942 The Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 270 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the new discoveries of 1942. Of these the most outstanding from the standpoint of production are listed in Table 4. Each of these fields produced one million barrels or more during 1942. Some of the fields where new extensions are occasionally referred to as separate fields, such as West Columbia and New West Columbia, or Thompson and South Thompson, are combined to give a more accurate outline. Two interesting facts may be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields: (I) that the Lolita field, Jackson County, is the only discovery since 1938 to produce more than one million barrels annually, although there have been 79 discoveries since Jan. I, 1940; (2) that 20 of these 26 fields produce from the Frio. New Fields ALief, Harris County.—Pure Oil Company's No. I Mike Albanese was drilled to 8637 ft. in Cook Mountain shale. After numerous tests the well was completed on Apr. 20, 1942, in a Yegua sand at 7919 to 7924 ft. for 54 bbl. of 52' gravity oil and 3,335,000 cu. ft. of gas through

The thermodynamic activities of zinc in six solid solution Cu-Zn alloys ranging from 5 to 35 at. pct Zn were determined experimentally in the temperature range 400° to 600°C. This low temperature investigation was canducted in order to evaluate techniques developed to utilize the inherently high sensitivity of atomic absorption flocesses in the measurement of thermodynamic activities. Analytical expressions ,for the activity and actizlity coeflcient are given for the six alloys in the temperature ranges investigated. RELATIVELY few experimental methods are available for investigation of thermodynamic activities of alloys, especially in the solid state. The techniques most frequently used have been the electrochemical potential and the effusion methods, both of which have severe limitations in many instances. It is therefore desirable to expand the ability to perform such measurements in order to obtain new information as well as to provide an additional independent verification capability. In this work, we present a significant improvement in the spectrophotometric method for sensing small vapor pressures in static absorption cells. Similar techniques have been used previously;1"5 however, applications had been limited to relatively high pressures, often greater than 1 torr. Prior investigators have, for the most part, used broad spectral sources such as xenon or mercury lamps, and high intensity arcs. Hollow cathode sources were first suggested in 1956 6 and were used soon afterwards.4'5 These sources offer significant improvements in sensitivity and freedom from interfering spectral lines.'-' EXPERIMENTAL High purity zinc was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and copper from American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were of 99.999 pct purity. Copper-zinc alloys were vacuum melted in a high fired carbon crucible with each alloy pulled from the melt as a 4 -in. diam bar. The bars were swaged to -1/4 in. rods and vacuum annealed for 160 hr at 800° + 1°C. Samples for gross chemical analysis were taken at intervals along the length of the rods to ascertain the axial zinc gradient. Electron microprobe analysis of homogenized specimens indicated that the alloys had uniform compositions over their cross sections on a macro (200 p) and micro (1 u) scale to better than *1 pct (20) of the gross composition. This tolerance was determined by counting statistics, rather than assured composition fluctuations. All SiO 2 windows were high-ultraviolet-transmission grade to minimize intensity losses. Silica absorption cells were scrupulously cleaned consecutively in organic solvents, dilute HF, and distilled water before use. The empty cells were then flamed while under a dynamic vacuum, cooled, and removed to an argon-filled glove bag. Alloy pieces were cut and filed in the glove bag to produce fresh surfaces, and then loaded into the cells. The loaded cells were temporarily sealed, removed from the glove bag, reevacuated to 10-5 torr or better, and permanently sealed. The instrument used is schematically shown in Fig. 1. The spectral emission from a commercially made hollow cathode lamp (A) of a selected element is focused through an absorption cell (B) inside a well-controlled furnace (C). The intensity of the transmitted beam is measured using the spectrometer* (D) 'Techtron model AA4 atomic absorption spectrometer. which contains a grating (E) that disperses the light prior to impingement on the photomultiplier (F). The monochromator grating is adjusted so that only the wavelength of interest is measured. The power supply delivered an interrupted voltage to the lamp, causing a chopped radiation output to be transmitted. The detector read only the intermittent component of radiation incident upon it, so that all continuous noise signals (furnace radiation, and so forth) were eliminated. Three recording thermocouples contained in the muffle furnace were positioned along the length of the absorption cell: one at each end and one at the center. An effort was made to keep the ends of the cell several degrees hotter than the center to avoid window condensate. Appropriate thermal corrections were then necessary to relate cell pressure to radiation attenuation. Water-cooled heat shields, as shown in Fig. 1, were found to aid signal stability by protecting the hollow cathode and the photomultiplier from furnace radiation. The furnace had a 2-in. diam muffle, Kan-thal wound, with SiO 2 windows at its ends to minimize convective effects. The hollow cathode radiation was masked and focused to form a conic beam that was a maximum of { in. diam within the furnace. Thus, the 1.5 in. diam absorption cell easily contained the entire beam. The furnace was mounted on ball-bearing slides with positive positioning detents. This arrangement allowed the removal of the entire furnace assembly from the radiation path, position [I], Fig. 1, so that frequent sampling of the unattenuated beam intensity could be obtained. In all cases the beam intensity was kept constant to 0.1 pct as judged by readings taken immediately before and immediately after data collection. Only data for absorptions of less than 80 pct were utilized, as systematic deviations from linearity were found for greater absorptions.

WHEN a mineral particle is fractured, bonds between the atoms are broken. The unsatisfied forces that appear at the newly formed surface1 are considered to be responsible for the adsorption of ions at the mineral surface. A knowledge of the mechanism and extent of ion sorption from solution onto a mineral surface is of interest in the development of the theory of flotation.2,3 Study of the adsorption of sodium from an aqueous solution on quartz offers a simple approach to this complicated problem. The availability of a radioisotope as a tracer element meant that accurate data could be obtained.4,5 Three main factors which appeared likely to affect the adsorption of sodium are: 1-concentration of sodium in the solution, 2-concentration of other cations in the solution, and 3-anions present in the solution. Hydrogen and hydroxyl ions are always present in an aqueous solution. By controlling the pH, the concentration of these two ions was kept constant. The variation in the amount of sodium adsorbed with variation in sodium concentration was then determined under conditions standardized in regard to hydrogen ion. The effect of concentration of hydrogen ions and of other cations was also measured. A few experiments were made to get a preliminary idea on the effect of anions. The active isotope of sodium was available as sodium nitrate. Standard sodium nitrate solutions were used throughout these experiments except when the effects of other anions were studied. It was found that sodium adsorption increased with sodium-ion concentration, but less rapidly than in proportion to it. Increasing hydrogen-ion concentration, or conversely decreasing hydroxylion, brings about a comparatively slight decrease in sodium-ion adsorption. Increasing the concentration of cations other than hydrogen or sodium decreases somewhat the adsorption of sodium ion. It would appear as if the kind of anion is a secondary factor in guiding the amount of sodium ion that is adsorbed. Materials and Methods Quartz The quartz was prepared as in previous work in the Robert H. Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratory4 except for the refinement of using de-ionized distilled water for the final washing of the sized quartz, prior to drying5 To minimize the laborious preparation of quartz, experiments were made to determine whether the sodium-covered quartz could be washed free of sodium and re-used. The experiments were successful as indicated by lack of Na' activity on the repurified material and by its characteristic sodium adsorption. Table I gives the spectrographic analyses of the quartz used. The quartz ranged from 16 to 40 microns in size, averaging about 23 microns (microscope measurement), and had a surface of 1850 sq cm per g (lot I), 2210 (lot II) and 2000 (lot III) as determined by the Bloecher method.6 Radioactive Sodium Method of Beta Counting for Adsorbed Sodium: Na22, the radioisotope of sodium, possesses convenient properties.7 It has a half-life of 3 years, thus requiring no allowance for decay during an experiment. On decay it emits a 0.575 mev ß radiation and a 1.30 mev ? radiation. The decay scheme is illustrated in the following equation: [Y Nam S. - 'Net 3 years] The ß radiation is sufficiently strong to penetrate an end-window type of Geiger-Mueller counting tube. This, in turn, makes it possible to use external counting, a great advantage in technique. Furthermore, it permits the assaying of solids arranged in infinite thickness, while assaying evaporated liquors on standardized planchets. The equipment used was standard and similar to that employed by Chang8 The original active material was 1 ml of solution containing 1 millicurie of Na22 as nitrate. This active solution was diluted to 1000 ml. Five milliliters of this diluted active solution was found to give a quartz sample a sufficiently high activity for accurate evaluation of the sodium partition in the adsorption measurements. Also, 1 ml of final solution gave a sufficiently high count for precision on the liquor analyses. The sodium concentration of the diluted active solution was 1.2 mg per liter, so that 6 mg of sodium for 60 ml of test solution and 12 g of quartz was the minimum amount used. The active solution was stored in a Saftepak bottle. Procedure for Adsorption Tests: The method consisted of agitating 12 g of quartz with 60 ml of solution of known sodium concentration for enough time to establish equilibrium between the solution and the quartz surface. The quartz was separated as completely as possible from the solution by filtering and centrifuging. The activity on the quartz and in the equilibrium solution was measured and the partition of the sodium was calculated from the resulting data. The detailed procedure for the adsorption test is set forth in a thesis by Laxen5 In brief, it included the following steps: 1-Ascertainment of linearity between concentration of Na22 and activity measured. 2-Evaluation of factor to translate activity on solid of infinite thickness in terms of activity on an evaporated active film of minute thickness, on the various shelves of the counter shield. 3-Taking precautions to avoid evaporation of water during centrifuging.

The year 1927 witnessed numerous developments of significance in California. The State's shut-in production increased from an average of 58,000 bbl. daily in January to a maximum of 93,000 bbl. daily in August, and a total of about 25,000,000 bbl. was withheld from the market during the year. This not only lessened the effect of large production at Hunt-ington Beach, Seal Beach and Alamitos Heights, but also was a most effective conservation move. Since 1922, it is estimated that approximately 100,000,000 bbl. of oil that would otherwise have been produced have been held in the ground. I. Outstanding Field Developments of 19271 1. Bituminous coal has for many years been used for the smelting of iron-ores in the blast-furnace. In some districts in Scotland it is used alone, in others it is used mixed with coke. The similar use of certain bituminous coals in the United States has been repeatedly mentioned in the Transactions. (See, for instance, as to the Hocking Valley coal, the papers of Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, Trans., ii., 275, and vii., 313; and as to Indiana "block-coal," the paper of Mr. J. S. Alexander, Trans., i., 225.) Phillips (Elements of Metallurgy, p. 250) says: " Raw coal for blast-furnace use must be of a non-cokiog kind, and, when of suitable quality, is perhaps the most advantageous fuel." In the first

Perhaps, the best way to begin is to report on what went on at the SME Board of Directors Meeting in St. Louis on October 20. This won't be a chronological report, and I shall take time to comment on some of the items we cover as we go along. You should be encouraged to know that your Directors take their duties seriously. Of the 21 current Directors, 19 were present, and three of the new 1971 Directors came to observe what goes on at an SME Board Meeting.

In the introduction to an excellent pamphlet, John Gross' makes the following statements: Although marked progress has been made along mechanical lines, the theory and conception of underlying principles have not advanced so rapidly. This lack of advance in theory may be attributed to the unfortunate situation resulting from the controversy as to whether the Rittinger or Kick law is applicable to crushing. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere. Realizing the situation, the Milling Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, through its secretary, E. A. Hersam, studied the milling industry and, because of the apparently hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute (5, 13, 14, 0, i8, 19, 21, 22, 23. 24, 30. 34), concluded that a foundation for the theory of crushing was of primary importance. The numbers in the paragraph quoted refer to papers listed by Mr. Gross in his Bibliography on Crushing and Grinding.1 One is obliged to infer that these papers show "hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute." No. 22 is a paper by Arthur O. Gates2 and No. 23 is one by the writer.3 Employing the subject matter contained in papers Nos. 22 and 23 2,3 the writer will show that their authors formulated identical conclusions, based solely on experimental evidence. Exactly the same defect in the Stadler hypothesis was described in each of the two papers, although entirely different experimental methods were employed in uncovering it. Both of the authors, independently, formulated the conclusion that Rittinger's was a true hypothesis and Stadler's false. The evidence in a third paper4 will be employed to prove that Stadler's hypothesis, when examined experimentally, is worthless. STADLER'S HYPOTHESIS WORTHLESS It is the writer's opinion that the evidence available in 1915 and the corroborating evidence in 1916 was amply sufficient to eliminate the need for any further consideration of Stadler's hypothesis. Certainly the evidence produced in 1918 dealt this hypothesis its coup de grace. It follows, therefore, that in the year 1918 there was only one credible hypothesis left-the Rittinger hypothesis. Gates' Opinion What information is available in Mr. Gates' paper?2 His conclusions are not consecutively summarized, none the less they are perfectly clear. On page 876, Gates says, and it is a very significant utterance: But my results show, among other things, that many more of Stadler's energy units are obtained per foot-pound-applied in coarse than in fine crushing. This suggests a doubt as to the correctness of his unit, since one would expect a foot-pound-applied to produce the same number of "energy units," whether the feed and resulting product were coarse or fine. I NDUSTRIAL explosives, as distinguished from military explosives, include high explosives and blasting powder. The high explosives which are best known are straight dynamite, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamite and permissibles. There are two kinds of blasting powder, saltpetre blasting powder and nitrate of soda blasting powder. Blasting powders are mechanical mixtures of nitrate of potash or nitrate of soda with sulfur and charcoal, highly compressed, granulated and glazed. They ignite from a spark and burn with relative slowness, the rate of burning and hence the rate of conversion into gases depending upon the size of the granulation and upon the degree of. confinement under which the powder is placed. High explosives, on the other hand, are chemical compounds which detonate; that is, when the explosive is subjected to a violent shock, provided in practice by a blasting cap or an electric blasting cap, the molecule of the essential ingredient, usually nitroglycerin, is disrupted and the energy and heat released cause any other explosive ingredients which may be present, such as ammoniuin nitrate or T.N.T., to decompose with a resultant evolution of gases at an extremely rapid rate varying from 6000 to 20,000 ft. per second.

In opening the meeting I wish to express my greatest pleasure at being able to greet this joint session of the Mining and Electrical Engineers. As engineering develops, we find that the border lines between the different branches of engineering become more and more indistinct; the several fields overlap so much that they are three or four layers deep in places. It is only an accident that we couldn't have had the Mechanical Engineers also as a formal part of this gathering, because they are quite as much interested in this subject as the Electrical or Mining Engineers. This paper is written as a discussion of the paper, "Buckling of Tubing in Pumping Wells, Its Effects and Means for Controlling It" by Arthur Lubinski and K. A. Blenkarn, which war published in the March, 1957, issue of Journal oP Petroleum Technology. An analogy is drawn between the buckling of tubing in pumping wells and a fiube, fitted with frictionless pistom, linked by an inelastic rod, and which is subject to an internal pressure. A simple derivation shows that the critical internal pressure exerts a hydrostatic force on the pisfon which is close to the Euler load for compression buckling of the same tube. While the results agree with those of Ref. I, the basis of calculations has been changed and clarified. The presence of internal upsets at the pistons is discussed. INTRODUCTION In the Appendix, Lubinski and Blenkarn state that a tube with ends closed by frietionless pistons connected by an inelastic rod (Fig. 1) will behave as a column loaded with a force equal to the tension force in the rod. They note that, while the fluid may not resist a shear force, the moment in every cross section is piston force multiplied by the elastic line deflection (c.f., the loaded column). Since the equations of the elastic lines are similar in the two cases, the solution is carried over from the loaded column. On the contrary it is suggested that while the method of solution remains unchanged from the column case, the actual stress distribution is different, a fact which is taken into account in this note. A simple method of approximating the buckling pressure is given, and their reasoning in our mathematical language is continued. GENERAL EQUATIONS The equation of an elastic line, initially straight in the x direction (Fig. 2), is given by In the case of a loaded column, this may be written: For the pressurized tube it was shown, by analogy with the loaded column, that tion has a solution that, for P, = EI/P, any deflection is stable (a criterion for buckling). An attempt will be made to describe more precisely, the forces acting on the tube, and to analyze the buckling condi,tions. DISCUSSION If the tube assumed a deflected position, the volume between the pistons would increase so that in deflecting, the energy of the fluid would decrease. When the increase in elastic energy of the tube (due to bending) is equal to the decrease of fluid pressure energy, buckling conditions exist. Analyzing the forces on the tube (Fig. 3), two transverse forces, T,, T,, exerted by the pistons, are balanced by a resultant of the pressure elements which are linearly dependent on the local curvature of the elastic line (Fig. 4). Unlike most buckling cases, the forces depend on the shape of the elastic line, a condition that makes a rigorous mathematical treatment difficult. Several approximations may be used to clarify the problem.

IT has been shown1,3 that many observed phenomena related to annealing textures in f.c.c. metals can be adequately accounted for, at least in a qualitative way, by considering the orientation dependence of the boundary mobility, without any hypotheses concerning preferred orientation of nuclei. It was noted1 that this approach is particularly successful in the common cases of primary recrystallization in highly cold-worked polycrys-talline metals, where nuclei occur in great abundance, and that in the other extreme case, where the number of nuclei is very limited, or even only a single crystal is grown, the orientation dependence of boundary mobility has only a small effect, or none at all, on the orientations resulting from annealing. Recently Dunn described examples3-6 where observed secondary recrystallization textures apparently cannot be accounted for on the basis of oriented growth alone, but also require oriented nuclei, or at least the absence of nuclei in certain orientation ranges. In general, the great difficulty in correlating the preferred orientation of recrystallized grains with that of nuclei is inherent in the fact that nuclei are by nature very small, and that they are usually identifiable as "nuclei" only after growth, i.e., after they have already been subject to growth selectivity. An investigation was carried out by Liebmann and Lücke,' and also a very similar one by Graham and Cahn,' to obtain quantitative information on the orientation depend- ence of boundary migration rates in the recrystallization of slightly deformed aluminum single-crystal rods or plates, in which artificially nucleated recrystallized grains of predetermined orientation were grown. Liebmann and Lücke foupd maximum boundary mobility for boundaries across which the misorientation corresponded to a rotation of 40 deg around a common [Ill] axis, in accordance with earlier conclusions.9,1 Also, they confirmed that such an orientation relationship predominates among crystals growing into slightly extended single crystals from presumably random artificial nuclei. On the other hand, Graham and Cahn found no preferred orientation among crystals grown in a similar manner. It is not as yet known how these observations may be reconciled with each other. The view has been expressed in various papers5'10,21 that selective growth based on the orientation dependence of boundary mobility is not in itself sufficient to account for the formation of sharp re-crystallization textures, such as those often observed in highly deformed polycrystalline metals after annealing. The present work was undertaken to ascertain whether or not it is possible to obtain a sharp re-crystallization texture in a case where random nuclei are assuredly present in large numbers. It was previously found1' that high-purity aluminum crystals rolled 80 pct on the (110) plane in the [1T2] direction, when suitable precautions are taken, may be annealed for periods of about 1000 sec at 350°C without recrystallization. It was also found that the reluctance to recrystallize in this case is due to the scarcity of material in sufficiently deviating orientations to serve as nuclei. By using such a matrix,

a. Boundaries of the District.—The district here considered comprises that portion of Colorado commonly known as " the San Juan Country." In order to bring the principal geological features of this region within the scope of a map of convenient dimensions upon a suitable scale, I have found it desirable to mark off boundaries near the parallels of 37O and 38O 10', and the meridiaus of 106' 30' and 108' 30' (West Longitude from Greenwich). This area of (approximately) 9400 square miles includes all the formations which we should have to discuss if our territory were greatly enlarged, excepting such as are distinctly characteristic of adjoining areas with independent orographic genesis. By limiting this review to these confines we miss very little of the geology of the eight counties of the San Juan region, viz.: Dolores, San Miguel, Ouray, Hinsdale,
