THE fact that the floatability of minerals with fatty-acid collectors changes as the pH of a pulp varies was utilized in the early days of flotation, when sulphuric acid was used with oleic acid to float sphalerite and galena from gangues which themselves float with fatty acids in alkaline pulps. Gaudin1 showed that this difference in floatability is a regular function of the extent of the change in pH. The present paper offers an explanation of the phenomenon, and on the basis thereof sets up recommendations for control of soap-flotation operations. EXPERIMENTAL Parallelism between floatability of a mineral in a given environment and its contact angle in that environment is so well established,' and the contact angle is so readily and rapidly measurable, that contact angles have been used throughout the experimental work to indicate relative floatability. Experiments comprised contact-angle measurements on a number of representative minerals and metals, and a variety of subsidiary tests designed to check and to amplify the contact-angle indications. Contact-angle measurements were made by the method described in detail by del Giudice.3 Sequence of procedure for determination of the points of Fig. I was: 1. Polish specimen. Most specimens yielded zero contact angle after polishing; a few showed a slight "cling." Cling is characteristic of specimens that pit on polishing; it is due to a residue of organic contamination, originally on the particle surface, which persists in the pits. The cling did not change total contact angle after conditioning, and is not, therefore, additive in the upper part of the curves of Fig. I. It may have broadened the bases of the curves for the affected minerals slightly. 2. The specimen was next conditioned in soap solution for 5 minutes. 3. The conditioned particle was transferred, under conditions that precluded surface drying, to an aqueous solution of the pH desired and contact angle determined. 4. The particle was thereupon transferred, again without surface drying, to water. The confirmatory tests will be described at the places pertinent in the argument. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS Gaudin and Vincent4 have shown that contact angles with heptoic acid as a collector decrease for a given specimen when the concentration of collector present falls below a certain value. A similar reduction in angle occurs with collector-conditioned particles that are visibly slime-coated, and varies roughly with the extent of coating. Since in the last case the reduction in angle is certainly due to reduction in the proportion of total conditioned mineral surface presented to the bubble, the authors believe that the same condition prevails in the first case cited, and that similar reduction in angle and floatability will occur whenever starvation quantities of collector are present, whether

Recently the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been pub1ished.l.2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.29 per cent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr, at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1¼ by ½ by ? in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling. instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for ½ hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205' to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about 1½ sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 2I°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. The hardness and metallographic determinations made at room temperature were confirmed reasonably well by dilatometer measurements taken during the process of transformation at the various temperatures. THE solubility of columbium nitride in ? iron has been determined for the temperature range 1191o to 1336°C from the nitrogen content and metallogra-phic examination of a series of Fe-Nb alloys.* (0.0 to 0.92 pct Nb) equilibrated with a purified gas mixture of 1 pct hydrogen in nitrogen. The method is the same as that used by Darken, Smith, and Filer' to determine the solubility of aluminum nitride in y iron. The variation in the furnace temperature during an equilibration period was about ± 2.0°C. Each sample was approximately 1/2 in. wide, 2 in. long, and 1/16 in. thick. A time series at 1200°C using samples of highest columbium content indicated that one day was sufficient for equilibrium; however, to be on the safe side all samples were left in the furnace for either two or three days. Afterequilibration, the samples were brought to room temperature by quenching in water. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. To be in accord with the values reported by Wriedt and Gonzalez2 and the temperature coefficient of our results at higher temperatures, the nitrogen content of iron at 1191oC is assumed to be slightly lower than our experimental value. Our data for the single-phase regions are not sufficiently accurate to establish an interaction coefficient for nitrogen in these alloys. However, the change in nitrogen content with change in alloy content for a number of systems (Fe-N-A1;3,1 Fe-N-Ni;372 Fe-N-Si.3949 Fe-N-V;3,5 Fe-N-Cr;3,6 Fe-N-Mo3,7) has practically the same value for the liquid alloy at a temperature near 1600°C as for the solid alloy at temperatures near 1200oC when the alloy content is below a few percent. On this basis the lines through the single-phase regions have been drawn with a slope corresponding to an increase in nitrogen of 0.0013 pct per 0.1 pct Nb.3 The straight lines through the two-phase regions were drawn with a slope corresponding to a one-to-one atom ratio of nitrogen to columbium in the nitride. S. J. SINDEBAND*—(1) Discussing the properties of the powders used, Mr. Rostoker mentioned a silicon powder as being between 150 and 325 mesh. We always had much difficulty in measuring particle size of silicon powder by screen analysis, because of its tendency to agglomerate. I would be interested in the method used to measure these particle sizes. (2) Mr. Rostoker maintains that the measurement of magnetic properties is more accurate in determining complete homogenization of an alloy, than is the X ray diffraction technique. I wonder whether this is really true. Even when diffusion is complete, magnetic properties will change during continuation of the heat treatment, due to change in density and pore shapes, as has been demonstrated by Mr. Rostoker himself. Which effect is faster, the diffusion of the alloy components or the attainment of final density, will, in my opinion, depend very much on initial material and sintering conditions used. For magnetic applications, of course, the magnetic measurements are most suited for determining the point at which equilibrium conditions are reached. (3) I was glad to see that Mr. Rostoker had used sample sizes which are similar to those I had used previously, and I believe that ring samples of about 2 in. od will become more or less standard samples for the determination of magnetic properties of powder metallurgy products. I should like to ask how the density was changed for the samples on which the effect of porosity was investi- gated, and, further, why the sintering temperature used for this series of experiments was so low. It is somewhat surprising that a 24-hr treatment at 850°C acts so much more to spheroidize the pores than a treatment for 1 hr at 1100°C. But the effect seems to be indisputable. I have made an investigation of the influence of sintering temperature for longer times on the maximum permeabilities of iron powder compacts which was presented at the International Powder Metallurgy Conference in Graz, in 1948, and I hope that these results will be published here within a short time. The results of this investigation are confirmed by Mr. Rostoker's findings that the change of time from 1 to 24 hr changes the permeability behavior considerably in the direction as indicated by Polder and Van Santen for spheroidiza-tion of pores. The preparation of massive uranium metal containing very low concentrations of a number of light elements by bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium is described. Details of procedures are given for preparing high-purity ingredients for the bomb reduction. The as-reduced uranium metal contained, on the average, less than the following amounts of light element impurities, in ppm: Li, 0.1; Be, 0.1; B, 0.1; C, 25; 0, 70; Na, 1; Mg, 3; Al, 2; and Si, 7. Other impurities for which the metal was examined averaged, in ppm: Ca, < 10; V, < 10; Cr, 2; Mn, 6; Fe, 50; Co, < 5; Ni, 8; and Cu, 1. THE preparation of very high-purity uranium metal in massive form for research purposes is of great importance. Recently the kilogram-scale preparation of uranium metal containing less than 70 ppm of detected impurities was accomplished by Blumen-thal and coworkers by vacuum remelting of high-purity crystals of uranium obtained by fused salt electrolysis.1"3 Albert and coworkers4 have reported successful experiments in lowering the concentrations of certain impurity elements in uranium, notably iron, to a few ppm by the zone-melting method. The present paper describes the preparation of high-purity massive uranium metal by the bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium. Early in 1951 a program was undertaken at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to prepare uranium metal of very high purity with respect to a number of the light elements. The methods considered for this purpose were 1) bomb reduction of a uranium halide with calcium, 2) electrolysis of fused salts, and 3) hot wire decomposition of UI4, The first of these processes had been used extensively at Los Alamos since 1943 (and still is used) for the production of uranium metal.5 In considering the three processes it was evident that either of the last two would require an extensive development program with no certainty of success. On the other hand, a study of available data showed that uranium metal of very high purity with respect to some light elements had occasionally been made in routine processing by the first method. It was therefore decided that an intensive study of the bomb-reduction process would be made to see if it could be improved to yield uranium metal with very low concentrations of light elements. DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES The bomb-reduction process used at Los Alamos consists of reducing UF4 with calcium, using iodine as a booster. The reaction is carried out in a magnesium-oxide crucible enclosed in a steel bomb. Argon is used in the bomb to avoid objectionable side reactions which would occur in the presence of air. All ingredients for this bomb-reduction process were examined as possible sources of light elements. It was known that high-purity UF4 was required. The calcium used in the reductions was a source of carbon and magnesium. The magnesium-oxide crucibles were sources of boron, silicon, and magnesium. The iodine did not appear to be a source of any impurities. Pure UF4- The UF4 for bomb reduction is prepared from U3O3 , by successive reduction to UO2, with hydrogen and hydrofluorination of the UO2, with anhydrous HF. Since it was known that no impurities were normally introduced during the gas-solid reactions, effort was directed toward the preparation of high-purity U3O3. Of the many possible procedures for the purification of uranium solutions the following were investigated: 1) Precipitation of uranium peroxide. (Two procedures were tried. The first consisted of simultaneously adding hydrogen-peroxide and ammonium-hydroxide solutions to a uranyl-nitrate solution, containing citric and malonic acids, at such relative rates that precipitation was carried out at a constant pH of 1.5 The second consisted of simultaneously adding uranyl-nitrate, ammonium-hydroxide, and hydrogen-peroxide solutions to an aqueous solution

This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental study of the effect of preperforated liners on well productivity. The analysis concerns the rectangular type of slot, either machine or torch cut, which is common in California. Muskatla treated this problem recently in a mathematical analysis of the flow of oil or gas from natural reservoirs into both gun-perforated and slotted liners. This paper presents additional and simplified analytical considerations and conclusions for the slotted liner, the solutions being applicable in the laboratory as well as in the field. An application of the analytical methods to permeability measurements on mounted core samples is given, to show the effects of sealing wax or other obstructions on the end faces of the cores. Results Fig. I &apos;Ompares the results of some theoretical calculations with the results of electrical analogy experiments performed in the Standard Oil Company of California&apos;s Production Technology Laboratory at La Habra, California. Fig. I indicates that the flux into short, "three-dimensional slots" of the relative dimensions encountered in practice is approximately equal to that into full-length, "two-dimensional slots" having the same open fraction of pipe. (The same numbers of slot rows, and the same radius ratio are also implied.) It can be seen from physical considerations that the closeness of this approximation must improve as the ratio of the external radius to the internal radius increases. Therefore, it is possible to calculate the flow into a slotted liner using a simple modification of the Darcy equation: where N is .the number of slot rows and O is the open fraction of the pipe. Fig. 2 shows the results of calculations . using Eq. 28. The most remarkable features of Fig. 2 are the high flux values for very small open fractions of pipe. For instance, with six slot rows and a radius ratio of 500, 74 per cent of the open-hole flux may be obtained with only o.I per cent of pipe Open. ThE primary slip plane in hcp metal crystals can usually be inferred from the c/a ratio. Basal slip is the primary system at room temperature for zinc, cadmium, magnesium, cobalt, and rhenium, all of which have a c/a ratio greater than 1.60. Zirconium and titanium, on the other hand, each with a c/a ratio of 1.59, deform primarily by (1010) [ll20] prismatic slip. The increasing tendency toward prismatic slip in these materials is generally thought to be associated with the increase in atomic density on (10i0) as c/a is reduced. Beryllium, with a c/a ratio of 1.57, would, according to the above scheme, be expected to exhibit prismatic slip. However, in beryllium of commercial purity, the primary deformation mode at room temperature is basal slip.&apos; The ratio of critical shear stress for prismatic to that for basal slip at room temperature is approximately 5:l. The critical shear stress for prismatic slip decreases quite rapidly with increasing temperature, however, and at 500°C the ratio is approximately unity. The apparently anomalous behavior of beryllium has led to speculation that prismatic slip in this material may be restricted by an anisotropic effect of impurities,&apos; and that, if beryllium could be purified to a sufficient extent, prismatic slip might predominate at room temperature. In such a case, the conditions under which basal cleavage can occur would be suppressed, and enhanced low-temperature ductility might result. With the advent of the floating-zone method for purification of beryllium,3 it has become possible to determine experimentally the effects of purification on basal and prismatic slip. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature on single crystals oriented favorably either for basal or prismatic slip. The crystals had been purified to various extents by zone-refining, employing procedures that have been described elsewhere.4 Relative purities of the crystals were estimated by measuring the ratio of electrical resistance at 4.2"K to that at 298°K. Typical values ranged from 0.40 for commercial-purity material to 7.7 X 10"4 for crystals prepared from vacuum-distilled beryllium and subjected to six zone-refining passes. The purity dependence of the critical shear stresses for basal and prismatic slip is shown in Fig. 1. In the purity range studied, the critical shear stress for basal slip is decreased from 1.4 to 0.14 kg per sq mm. The critical shear stress for prismatic slip is decreased from 6.7 to 5.3 kg per sq mm. The decreases in critical shear stress for each deformation mode, therefore, are approximately equivalent. No purification anisotropy is observed. Because of the absolute magnitudes of the critical stresses, the ratio of the critical shear stress for prismatic slip to that for basal slip actually increases from 5:l to 38:l at the highest purity level studied. It is evident, therefore, that basal slip is the primary deformation mode in high-purity beryllium. This fact must be accounted for in any rationalization of the deformation behavior of hcp metals. The distribution of solute during the progressive solidification of dilute Sn-Ag alloys was determined in both solid and liquid as a jbnction of growth rate, rod diameter, temperature gradient, and solute concentration, using radioactive tracer techniques. The results indicated that partial mixing occurs in the liquid during freezing for most of the conditions investigated, approaching complete mixing for larger rod diameters (>2mm) and slow growth rates. Measured solute distributions were fitted to distribution functions based on diffusion controlled solute transport in the liquid state, by treating the normal solute diffusion constant and distribution coefficient as variable solute transport and segregation parameters. Values of these parameters were determined for the growth conditions investigated. Observations were made to determine whether mixing in the liquid was primarily due to volume changes in freezing or to differences in density between solute and solvent. The former effect was investigated using a selected Sn-Bi alloy as a solvent with zero volume change on fusion, and the density effect was studied using vertical solidifications of Sn-In and Sn-Ag alloys, systems having, respectively, very small and large differences in density between solute and solvent. The result indicate that mixing in the liquid cannot be primarily attributed to either volume changes or density differences. THE solute distribution in progressively solidified rods of dilute alloys, in which there is complete mixing in the liquid, is given by the expression1 where C, is the solute concentration in the solid at the point where the fraction g of the material has solidified, C, is the initial solute concentration and k is the equilibrium distribution coefficient. If it is assumed that there is no significant con-vective mixing in the liquid, then the solute distribution in the initial portion of a semi-infinite rod has been calculated to be2 where t is the time from the start of freezing and x1 is the distance in the liquid ahead of the solid-liquid interface at time t. Expressions [1] and [2] describe the limiting cases of solute distribution in the liquid, i.e., complete mixing, or no convective mixing; in practice it might be expected that the solute distribution would be somewhere between these two cases. pfann3 has suggested that Eq. [I] is applicable for partial mixing, as well as complete mixing, if an effective distribution coefficient k1 is used instead satisfactorily describes solute distributions in rods of magnesium, n-g, and b-sb6 alloys that were progressively solidified from the melt without mechanical mixing. The values of kl were observed to depend on the growth rate4-6 and the temperature gradient.6 The purpose of the present investigation was to measure solute distributions in both the solidified rods and the melt as a function of the solidification variables, and to determine to what extent the observed solute distributions could be described by the above theoretical expressions, keeping in mind that expressions [2] and [3] have been derived solely for the case of diffusion controlled solute transport in the liquid and are not theoretically applicable to

An optical incestigation of the phase transformations in RbFeF, has been conducted. Details of the ferromagwetic phase transition and the metamagnetic state are disczrssed. The three-dimensional magnetic domain structure existing in bulk crystals of RbFeF3 is described, as well as the effect of the magnitude and direction of the applied magnetic field on the domain struclure. The strong magnetoelastic interaction in RbFeF, is demonstrated. The results of the direct observation of the role of dislocation subboundaries and slip bands as nucleation sites and as pinning sites for magnetic domain walls are reported. THE perovskite compound RbFeF, has recently been shown to exhibit three magnetic states.&apos;&apos;&apos; Above 102°K it is paramagnetic, between 102" and 87°K it is antiferromagnetic. and below 87°K it is ferromagnetic (i.e., exhibiting remanence) with a modification of the magnetization occurring at 40°K. The changes in magnetic structure at 102o, 87°. and 40°K are accompanied by shear transformations to successively lower crystal symmetry classes.3 At 102°K a second-order phase transformation to a tetragonal crystal structure occurs. The c/o ratio increases with decreasing temperature to a value of 1.0034 at 87°K where the crystal undergoes another shear transformation to an ortho-rhombic crystal structure. The magnetic modification at 40 K is also accompanied by a shear transformation to a lower crystal symmetry. RbFeF3 is unique in that in the ferromagnetic state it is transparent in the bulk to visible light, has a low saturation magnetization, a large magnetic rotation. and has good optical properties.&apos; All these features make it an ideal material for the investigation of magnetic domain structures in bulk crystals. In addition a dislocation etch has been developed which reveals the point of emergence of dislocations with the (100) surfaces of RbFeF3,5 making it possible to determine the dislocation arrays in the material. As a result domain wall dislocation interactions can be observed in the bulk crystal. In this paper we report on 1) the crystallography of the phase transformations in RbFeF3. 2) the domain configurations as a function of magnetic field and crystal orientation. 3) the interaction of dislocations and magnetic domain walls in RbFeF,. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Since the temperature range of interest is below room temperature the dewar shown in Fig. 1 was employed. It was designed to fit on the stage of a Leitz panphot metallograph, and permitted examination of the sample at a magnification up to 150 times. The dewar consists of a double-walled glass cylinder bent into an L shape. The space between the walls is evacuated. The viewing wirldows were made of four optically flat quartz discs aligned parallel to each other and sealed to the sides of the concentric cylinders. The specimens were mounted in a holder attached to a flexible plastic shaft. Various holder designs were employed depending upon the type of observations to be made. For studies of the phase transformation between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic state the holder shown in Fig. 2(d) was employed. This holder permitted accurate temperature control at 82" to 88°K by balancing the heat input from the carbon resistance heater against the heat loss to a heat sink immersed in liquid N2. Magnetic field studies were conducted by employing the holders shown in Figs. 2(a) and (b). The holder shown in Fig. 2(n) has a solenoid imbedded in it. such that the magnetic field direction is in the same direction as the incident light. The magnetic field provided by the holder in Fig. 2(b) is perpendicular to the incident light direction. The holder in Fig. 2(r) was employed when observations of the specimen were desired while an elastic bending stress was applied to the sample. The stress was applied to the sample by pulling a wire from outside of the dewar. The wire was attached to a lever pivoted on the holder. which caused the knife edge of the lever to push against the sample. As a result of the great demand for metallic aluminum and the scarcity of domestic bauxite, numerous processes have been proposed and developed to extract the oxide of this metal (Al2o3) from clays, shales, and other low-grade raw materials.1-4 An exploratory study was made to extract alumina with sulfuric acid from relatively impure coal-associated draw-slate and to establish an optimum calcination temperature for maximum recovery. Draw-slate is the term used to describe the hard, slaty material directly overlying many coal seams and may range from a few inches to a few feet in thickness. Alumina content of these draw-slates may range from as low as 15% to over 35%. Although the following results are limited in scope, some of the data should prove beneficial for further work. Coal-associated clay, shale, and gob heretofore have been considered nuisance products; any successful alumina extraction process would greatly enhance the worth of these almost limitless resources. This research demonstrated that an optimum calcination temperature for alumina extraction could be established for a coal-associated draw-slate and that this temperature was lower than those suggested in previous work with unspecified clay types. It should be noted that slightly higher acid concentrations and somewhat finer particle sizes were used in this series of tests as compared to previous work. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Essentially, alumina extraction proceeded in four steps: 1) grinding, 2) calcining, 3) acid leaching, and 4) precipitating of aluminum sulfate. An initial series of reference tests to determine the optimum temperature of solubility for alumina was run using relatively pure kaolin. Kaolin forming clays are hydrous aluminum silicates of the approximate composition 2H2O A12O3 2SiO and kaolinite is the mineral that predominates in most kaolins. 5 The kaolin was ground to -30 mesh and subsequently calcined at temperatures ranging from 100°C to 700°C. Each sample was calcined for 1 hr in a muffle furnace and in turn subjected to sulfuric-acid leaching (H2SO4, 9 molar) for a 2-hr period.
