ALTHOUGH a few engineers have recognized the problem of the mechanism of filtration it has never been studied in a quantitative way. A background for a better understanding will be afforded by a survey of certain fundamental principles of filtration. In recent years, authorities have become practically unanimous in saying that the actual filtering should be done, not by the cloth itself, but by a layer of solid particles deposited upon it. Thus, a cloth may be used in which the openings are considerably larger than the particles to be filtered, provided that groups of particles form an arch or bridge over each opening. This can be accomplished if the initial pressure is so low that the arch will not be broken while it is still thin. According to Wright,1 the chief advantage of this method of filtration is that the open-weave cloth does not become clogged as easily as does one of closer weave, where the fine particles often work their way into the interior of the cloth and become caught there. If the character of the material to be filtered is such that it will not form a good film, then it becomes advantageous to use "filter aids" for pre-coating the cloth with a desirable layer of solids, and the coating need be only of a very slight thickness for good results. Until the film is formed, the first runnings of the filtrate may be cloudy, often necessitating refiltering this portion. A factor which has considerable effect on the performance of filters is the concentration of solids in the pulp. According to Wright, a. high concentration of solids gives a porous cake, since the flow is then slower than with- a thin pulp. The porosity of the cake is also affected by the pressure: a high initial pressure tends to compact the cake, and the same effect results from fluctuations of pressure. In his studies of the relation between pore size and particle size, Hatschek2 observed that the particles in a pulp tend to arrange themselves with maximum cross-section parallel to the direction of flow and that this is more marked at the higher velocities. IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

THERE are two distinct questions associated with the concept of temperature: one is practical, the other is theoretical. Our fundamental ideas of temperature come from our senses; we know what we mean by the words "hot" and "cold," or by saying one body is "hotter than another." But for scientific purposes words require definition. We are guided in this matter, as in all other scientific questions, by our knowledge of facts of observation. When two bodies at different temperatures are intimately associated, e.g., a hot stone is, dropped into a pail of water, our experience is that ultimately they come to the smile temperature as far as our senses can tell; the hot body becomes colder and the cold body hotter. In the case of a block of ice, immersed in, water, the ice melts, forming cold water, which then mixes with the other water, the final result being water colder than the original water. From our knowledge of the nature of heat phenomena, we learn that in this process one body loses, heat and the other gains heat, the condition of equilibrium being, one in which each body gains Is much heat as it loses. It is distinctly assumed in this statement that only two bodies are concerned in the transfer of heat, all other bodies being rendered in some way impervious to heat. The body that in the process loses heat is said to have the ?higher temperature" while the body that gains the heat is said to have the "lower temperature;" and, when thermal equilibrium is reached, the two bodies are said to have the "same temperature." Consequently, the temperature of a body may be defined, is it was by Maxwell, as "its thermal state considered with reference to its power of communicating heat to other bodies."

During 1942, production of oil in Kentucky reached a total of 4,169,163 bbl. of which 1,807,809 bbl. came from eastern Kentucky. This was more than a million barrels less than in 1941, owing partly to the low price of crude oil, which almost eliminated wildcatting, and partly to spacing regulations, which limited the number of wells drilled in small, shallow pools where the pressures are not sufficient to maintain maximum recovery in widely spaced wells. In eastern Kentucky much of the oil was produced from outliers of the Mauch Chunk series at the disconformable contact of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian. Although wells producing from this horizon, known as the Maxon, are sprinkled over the entire area, the greatest concentrations are in Martin, Floyd, Knott and Pike Counties. A new 30 to 40-bbl. well has been completed in this formation in ,Pike County, where the carbon ratio is so high that ordinarily oil would not be expected. Pike County is one of the largest producers of Maxon gas, and the offset well to this oil well produced gas. Of the 412 gas wells drilled in Pike County, 12.2 per cent produced gas from the Maxon horizon. During 1942, the old Menifee " Cornif-erous" field, the Mariba-Denniston field, was redrilled between old wells, and although it did not produce any large amount of oil it did contribute 2018 bbl. In the oldest oil field in eastern Kentucky, the Ragland pool, operators are cleaning out abandoned wells and are using this oil for fuel oil. There is a possibility that some of this may be used in the future as distilled fuel oil. Eight wells were completed in 1942 in the Jackson County gas field. The development of Jackson County, which was started in 1934 and in which commercial quantities of gas were encountered at a depth of 1100 to 1200 ft., has become of importance in 1942 with the completion of eight wells, making a total of 24 commercial producing wells with an average rock pressure of 140 lb. At this time the gas is not being marketed. In the last year it has been found that these wells, which produce from the Niagaran dolomite ("Cornif-erous"), respond to acidizing and the production has been thus greatly increased. There has been less development in Estill and Lee Counties than for several years. Two wells were drilled in Greenup County, one of which had a show of oil in the Berea sandstone. One deep test, drilled by the Owens-Libbey-Owens Co. in Lawrence County, was dry. This well was drilled to a depth of 4975 ft. into the top of the Clinton shale sequence. Of the 202 wells completed in Floyd, Martin, Knott and Pike Counties, 187 were gas wells, 3 oil wells and 12 dry holes. In Floyd County 66 per cent of the gas production was from the Devonian-Mis-sissippian black shales, 53 per cent in Martin, 79 per cent in Knott and 65 per cent in Pike. THE area in which spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur extends from Gaffney, S. C., in a northerly direction to Lincolnton, N. C., a distance of about 16 miles. The zone averages 2 miles in width. Interest in this area was first aroused by the discovery of small amounts of cassiterite in the pegmatites and in greissen which occurs on the walls of some of the pegmatites. Attempts were made from 1880 into the 1920's to mine and concentrate cassiterite, but there were no successful operations. In 1935 L. M. Williams became interested in the area and began prospecting by trenching and sinking several small shafts. He gradually gained control of a considerable acreage south of the city of Kings Mountain, N. C. Mr. Williams states that he produced some ore from a shaft which he shipped to the Maywood Chemical Co. in the late 1930's. In 1937 G. H. Chambers of the Foote Mineral Co. visited the area and examined several properties, but the lithium market was too small to support the necessary concentrating plant.

THE use of sulfuric acid in refining illuminating oils antedates the beginning of the petroleum industry in America by many years. It was used as early as 1792 by Tower in refining "coal oil" in the British Isles, and by 1860 there were 53 refineries in the United States manufacturing "coal oil," most of them using sulfuric acid as a refining agent. Following the completion of the Drake well in 1859, many of the "coal oil" refiners began to use petroleum for manufacturing illuminating oil, and their methods and equipment were adapted so far as possible to this new raw material. The value of sulfuric acid in refining "coal oil" having been established, this reagent was immediately tried and found to be satisfactory in refining petroleum. Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in petroleum technology since that time, sulfuric acid remains today the most valuable and most widely used means for refining petroleum products. EARLY METHODS OF DISPOSAL OF ACID SLUDGE With the almost immediate expansion of the petroleum industry came the problem of disposing of the acid sludge produced in the refining operations. While in 1859, the year of the discovery of the Drake well, a patent was granted for sludge separation and separated acid concentration, most of the earlier refiners, and many of their successors, felt that separation and recovery of spent acid was uneconomical. Accordingly, many of them disposed of the sludge in any way that seemed expedient at the time. It was buried in the refinery grounds, barged and dumped at sea, run into neighboring streams, or dumped into sewers. Some optimists carted it to open pits in the hope that it would either sink into the ground or evaporate. Not so many years ago, the superintendent of an eastern refinery, who was using the open-pit method of disposal, lost a sludge cart, with horse attached, in such a pit. The horse was recovered almost immediately, but its availability for further use was reduced to zero by the loss of its hair.

CIRCULAR steel sets have proved to be more economical for supporting slusher drifts in the block-caving mining used by the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz. The first steel sets were installed in July 1950, and up to July 1, 1951, about 474 sets (approximately 1896 ft of drift) were placed; the bulk of this work was done in the latter six months. All of the places selected for the steel were in heavy ground. Based on this experience the following definite conclusions can be drawn:

The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black rock, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 yearn before the Christian Era and from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, go back thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages. COAL IN AMERICA In the Americas, there is evidence here and there of occasional use by the Indians. However, the first recorded discovery of coal, in what is now the US, was by French explorers, who reported an outcrop exposure on the Illinois River in 1679. Following this, other discoveries were made by French and British explorers, but the first recorded actual usage was in Virginia in 1702, where a French settler was granted permission to use coal for his forge. Earliest recorded commercial mining was in 1750, from the James River coaEeld near Richmond, VA, a deposit now abandoned. Besides local consumption from this field, shipments were made to Philadelphia, New Pork, and Boston. During the Revolution this coal was of impor- tance in the manufacture of shot and shell; so important, in fact, that the British sent an expedition in 1781 to destroy the iron works and

OPEN-PIT mining of coal is relatively a recent innovation; men still active in the industry can trace its development. Re- viewing the growth of operations from the original horse-drawn scrapers, through the various stages of power equipment to the huge strip- ping shovels of today, one also notes changes in the methods of what the coal man calls preparation at the face. We really should not call it face preparation because, in contrast to underground mining, a face does not exist in strip mining. Further, preparation of the coal for market at the loading point has already, in but a few years, become largely of historic interest only and modern mines as well as old mines recently modernized rely almost entirely on separate and elaborate preparation plants to produce marketable coal. This paper presents the feasibility analyses of terrace pit mining a single seam for depths beyond 33 m (110 feet) in a hypothetical model mine and at an operating mine in southern Illinois. One or two shovel- truck benches near the surface and a large dragline for the last bench are considered for overburden stripping in the proposed mining scheme. Mining and reclamation operations are integrated and reclamation efforts are minimized by proper spoiling techniques. The proposed mining scheme was optimized using the OPMHS (Open Pit Material Handling Simulator) model developed by Penn State. Equipment selection and economic analyses were also conducted using the simulation model. The effect of pertinent variables such as thickness of the coal seam, annual production, initial capital requirements, size of haul trucks, selling price of coal and expected rate of return were analyzed on the feasibility of terrace pit mining. Sensitivity analysis charts for the effect of these variables are presented in the paper.

In all three principal dunite dikes, minute disseminated grains of pyrrhotite are to be seen in the fresh rock in amounts less than 1 pct. Traces of nickel have been reported from many such specimens. Nickeliferous pyrrhotite is the principal nickel-bearing mineral, although olivine contains very minor amounts of nickel in solid solution, substituting for magnesium and iron. Such occurences are of no economic significance. Nickel analyses of possible economic significance (up to 3 pct Ni) have been returned from samples taken near the margins of the two large western dunite dikes. These samples were from schistose zones along and within the dike walls. The mineralized shear zones, up to 30 ft wide, strike N 30 W and dip from 65" to 90" west. They consist of layers of hard, fresh, green-gray dunite, mineralized with finely disseminated pyrrhotite. These layers alternate with layers of soft, black, oxidized schistose dunite up to 1 ft wide, well mineralized with pyrrhotite and tabular-fractured pentlandite in crystals up to 1/4-in. diam. Sulfides identified in polished sections were chiefly pyrrhotite and pentlandite, with much smaller amounts of chalcopyrite. There are two varieties of pyrrhotite. One develops a fine polish and conforms to published descriptions. The other is slightly darker and browner, does not polish as well, and displays flamelike growth or intergrowth structure when etched with nitric acid fumes. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite crystallized contemporaneously in the form of veins in the olivine and as fillings of the interstices of euhedral olivine crystals. Chalcopyrite replaces the other sulfides. The most striking feature of the deposits is their occurrence in intimately fractured and schistose zones in the dunite where faulting has been localized along the contacts of the sediments and the dunite dikes. Though far too little detailed work has been done to be certain, there appears to be a higher concentration of sulfides in the shear zones along the margins of dike apophyses, sediment reentrants, and strike and dip irregularities. Much more study would be required in order to submit a plausible theory of formation of the nickel deposits, supported by laboratory and field evidence. Results of the present study, especially localization of the metals by fracturing, certainly indicate that the nickel concentrations were brought about by precipitation of nickel sulfides from fluids that used the fractures as a means of ingress. Studies of nickel sulfide deposits throughout the world have demonstrated that such sulfides were deposited at considerable depths and at temperatures of several hundred degrees. This would rule out the possibility of groundwater as the transporting medium. The two possible sources of hot nickel-bearing fluids are quartz diorite and gabbro. The first possibility is that large volumes of fluids, expelled from the quartz diorite magma during its crystallization, obtained a supply of nickel by altering the nickeliferous olivine of the dunites. The likelihood of this process is lessened by the recognition that, although the dunites show some alteration to serpentine, talc, and trem-olite, they are for the most part remarkably fresh outside the schistose zones. The worldwide association of nickel with basic rocks, together with the presence of pyrrhotite in thin films on joint planes of the gabbro on Jumbro Mountain, favors the gabbro source. IN March 1949 the Calaveras Cement Co. was sued by five landowners whose properties are located in the vicinity of the plant. These landowners—all of them cattle ranchers—sued for dust damages of $120,338 and for an injunction preventing the company from casting dust upon their properties in injurious quantities. The issue was split, the jury deciding the amount of damages and the court handling the injunction features. The action came to trial before a jury in April of that year and resulted in damages being awarded in the amount of $7,508. A month later the court issued its injunction requiring recovery of stack dust to an 87 pct minimum. The Calaveras plant, shown in Fig. 1, is located three miles from San Andreas in the heart of the Mother Lode country, about 45 miles east of Stockton, Calif. Since it is in a small town, the company's responsibilities to its employees and to the community are different from those of plants located in large centers of population. Construction of the plant was begun in 1925, and production was started the following year. Standard gray Portland cement as well as several specialty cements are produced. Production facilities have been continually enlarged so that the present capacity is more than double what it was 25 years, ago. The most important item in the company's expansion program was the purchase in 1945 of an 11 ft 3 in. x 360 ft Allis-Chalmers kiln which had been declared surplus by the Defense Plant Corp. The company is now able to produce about 2,500,000 bbl of cement a year, and employment at the plant is approximately 300. The production of cement has always involved a dust problem, solution of which has been attempted in a number of different ways. By far the most efficient method of catching dust discharge is electric precipitation. Soon after the company went into production in the 1920's, the landowners near the plant began complaining about dust discharge. The company settled the matter by paying them a total of $27,000 for dust damages incurred during the period from 1929 to 1938. In the latter year the two-unit Cot-trell Electric Precipitator shown in Fig. 2 was installed and collected over 85 pct of the dust resulting from operation of the two 11 ft 3 in. x 10 ft x 240 in. kilns. From 1938 until 1946 the landowners registered no objection and were apparently satisfied with that dust recovery. In 1946, however, the substantially higher production resulting from operation of the new kiln immediately overtaxed the facilities of the existing two-unit precipitator. In a short time claims for dust damages were again received from the landowners. The company informed them that because of postwar shortages it would take several years to install a new precipitator. The company stated that it intended to purchase an additional precipitator and offered in the meanwhile to pay the landowners a fair amount to cover their damages. This offer was rejected and the landowners filed suit in the Superior Court of Calaveras County asking for total damages of $120,-338 and for the injunction outlined above. Case for the Ranchers The attorneys for the plaintiffs produced three different types of witnesses: first, the landowners themselves and members of their families; second, other cattle raisers who were sympathetic to the plaintiffs; and third, several types of technical experts: veterinarians, soil chemists, and an aerial photographer. The testimony of these witnesses was designed to establish that the flue dust from the plant had not only damaged the land and the forage, but had also caused fluorine poisoning to their animals. By a combination of these causes, the plaintiffs attempted to prove substantial loss of profits.

A technique, equipment, and a compound have been developed and field tested for sealing tubing joint thread leaks without removing the tubing from the well. This eliminates the necessity of killing the well with possible damage to the producing formation, which could result if it were exposed to drilling mud. A thread sealing compound, developed and tested in the laboratory, is introduced into the tubing and squeezed into the joint to eliminate the leak. A high percentage of successful field applications have eflected an appreciable cost reduction in repairing leaking tubing strings in East Texas and in the Louisiana Gulf Coast area. INTRODUCTION In producing oil and gas wells the industry has been plagued with a never ending problem of tubing connection leakage. This situation is becoming increasingly more significant as more gas wells are placed on production and as higher pressures are encountered at greater depths of current drilling. Substantial progress has been made in minimizing thread leaks by careful handling and cleaning of joints and by the use of improved sealing compounds in combination with controlled makeup. But even with the use of the best known methods and sealing materials during initial makeup, occasional leaks through tubing joint threads appear inevitable. In some instances, tubing joints in high-pressure gas wells have been found to leak gas at relatively less pressure than that at which the tubing had been tested satisfactorily using liquid. Many expedients have been employed to prevent the physical replacement of tubing when leaks have developed. Perhaps the most commonly used is the sodium silicate treatment in which the solution is lubricated into the tubing to form a crystalline plug in the leak. Generally, any benefit realized is of a temporary nature. In addition to field studies on handling and makeup of tubing, extensive laboratory work has been undertaken on the development and testing of thread dopes.' Also, substantial effort has been devoted to testing tubing joints using high-pressure gas as a pressure medium.' The results of this work have emphasized that tubing joints are susceptible to occasional leaks, especially when subjected to relatively high differential pressures. To cope with the problem of leaking connections, an extensive investigation was undertaken to devise means of sealing leaks without removing the tubing from the well and without reducing the inside diameter of the tubing. The purpose of this paper is to present a technique, together with the associated equipment and compound, which have been developed for effecting a seal of leaking tubing in place. DISCUSSION Work was initiated simultaneously on two ventures: (1) to develop a satisfactory leak sealing compound and (2) to develop tools necessary to find the leak and place the compound. Leak Sealing Compound In the development of a sealing compound, tests were conducted on those compounds commercially available which include: (1) conventional thread lubricants, (2) thermo-setting resins and (3) other materials which held promise of effecting a seal. Although none proved completely satisfactory in their available form, two commercial compounds proved nearly equally effective in sealing leaks during laboratory tests after proportioned quantities of graded silica had been added. Field usage has indicated that the preferred compound is one prepared of an aluminum-stearate base thinned to the proper constituency and carrying a mixture of fine mesh graphite and graded silica. The compound developed by Humble Oil & Refining Co. is designated as Tubing Thread Leak Sealant 800. Placement Tools and Technique In developing tools to detect joint leaks and to place the sealing compound, work was done initially on wireline equipment. Preliminary designs were completed of a tool somewhat on the order of a pressure bomb to test individual joints with gas at high pressure to determine if the joint was leaking. An entirely different tool equipped with opposed packers was intended for placement of the sealing compound at high pressures in each leaking joint. The application of these tools

INTRODUCTION Direct reduction processes reduce the various commercial forms of iron oxide (pellets, concentrate, fines, etc.) to metallic iron at temperatures lower than that of molten iron. Thus, this technology includes practically, all iron reduction processes other than blast furnaces and electric pig iron furnaces (whose output in terms of world production is negligible). The product of these processes which is known as direct reduced iron (DRI), or sponge iron, is primarily used as a source of metallic iron in steel-making operations. Interest in DRI, which has been significant since the early 1960s, increased significantly in recent years with the rapid growth of DRI installed capacity throughout the world. The importance of the subject for the Circum-Pacific region stems directly from the influence that DRI has on iron ore consumption and on future steel development for this region. Although there is widespread agreement that electric furnaces will continue to increase their share of global steel output, and especially so in the countries of the Pacific Steel community, some doubts exist about future scrap supplies being adequate to support growth at past rates. The authors believe that such doubts are soundly based. As this paper points out, the total supply of all metallics used in electric furnaces may not be adequate to support the extrapolated rapid growth in electric furnace steel production. This paper seeks to provide perspective on the global and Circum-Pacific prospects for DRI in light of recent energy price developments and the current recession. In this regard, the demand for DRI within the context of recent evolutionary patterns in steel-making, the outlook of DRI supply in terms of prevailing production costs, and the prospects of new technology are discussed. THE DEMAND FOR DRI Although several reports published in the last 10 years predict high rates of growth in DRI, the subject remains a controversial one. Significant growth has indeed occurred, but not to the extent anticipated in the studies summarized in Table 1. The substantial difference between previous expectations and present reality can be ascribed primarily to: (1) lower growth in steel production than formerly anticipated; (2) numerous cancellations of DRI facilities that were previously announced; and (3) a fundamental and probably irreversible change in the economics of DRI production. Note that DRI capacity at the end of 1980 was about 16 million tonnes, a significantly lower figure than any of the projections above. In addition, DRI production was only about half of capacity, reflecting the abnormally low rates of capacity utilization in this industry. [ ] Before examining the current outlook in steel, it is pertinent to note that the market for DRI is usually different in the industrialized countries of the West from that in developing countries. In the former, the available infrastructure and industry's diversification extends DRI's potential markets to numerous steelmaking, foundry, and other industrial applications, although competition from scrap and other forms of metallic iron is constant. Scrap is generally available in these countries and, therefore, DRI competes with it in electric furnace steelmaking, basic oxygen steelmaking (as a coolant), cupola foundry operations, or as an additive in the metallic charge for open hearth and blast furnaces. On the other hand, DRI in developing countries is often allocated exclusively to domestic electric furnace steelmaking or, when capacity exceeds domestic captive requirements, to export. Notwithstanding quality considerations, DRI is being and is likely to continue to be used predominantly as a source of metallics in iron and steel-making. Other uses of DRI, such as in copper cementation represent a marginal market in terms of overall tonnage and can be ignored at this point. Therefore, DRI demand is-determined by the overall availability of metallic scrap in its various forms--a function of steel production and its probable evolution. The Global Steel Outlook Given the present recession, an objective appraisal of the long-term outlook for steel is particularly difficult. R. E. Smallman (University of Birmingham, England)—Recently, Tedmon and Ferriss11 have determined the yield stress parameters oi and ky for tantalum by measuring the lower yield stress as a function of grain size 2d and fitting the results to a relationship of the form They report that although ky , which is taken to be a measure of the dislocation locking strength, is small (- 2 to 4 x 106 cgs units) a substantial yield drop is nevertheless observed in a normal tensile test. Niobium gives a similar result,12-14 as pointed out in the original work by Adams et a1.,12 and in order to check this apparent anomaly the yield-stress parameters of electron beam-melted niobium have recently been reanalyzed15 by the Luders strain technique. In this method the strain hardening part of the stress-strain curve is extrapolated to zero plastic strain; the intercept on the preyield portion of the curve is taken to give oi, whilst the difference between oi and the lower yield stress gives kyd-1/2. The results indicate that ky increases with increasing grain size and hence, a plot of vs d-112 yields an apparent ky, which is lower than the true value. A similar effect could account for the small ky found in the relatively pure tantalum used by Tedmon and Ferriss. The variation of ky with grain size shows that dislocations are more strongly locked in coarse-grained specimens than in fine-grained samples. In niobium, this may be attributed to the fact that the dislocation density in the fine-grained material is higher than that found in the coarse-grained samples which are given a sufficiently prolonged anneal to remove any residual substructure and, since the metal contains only a small amount of interstitual impurity, a variation in locking occurs. By contrast, application of both the grain size analysis and the Luders strain method to yield-stress data from commercially pure vanadium containing a large amount of interstitial impurity gives consistent values of oi and ky, with ky independent of grain size and temperature. Electron microscope observations show minor variations in dislocation density from grain size to grain size, but in any case in this material the dislocations are heavily locked with precipitate. On yielding new dislocations are generated and, as a consequence, the importance of any differences in dislocation density between the various specimens of different grain size is considerably reduced. It is perhaps significant that Adams and lannucci,16 working with a grade of tantalum containing a higher interstitial content than that used by Tedmon and Ferriss, prepared the specimens of different grain size by annealing in the temperature range 1500" to 2000° C to minimize any differences in dislocation structure, and found that ky had a value of 1.04 x 107 cgs units, independent of testing temperature. Such behavior is consistent with the dislocations being locked by carbide precipitates so that the generation of free dislocations is an athermal process. The recent work of Gilbert et al.17 also shows that in tantalum there is no significant variation of ky with grain size provided it contains 150 ppm of oxygen. In this case, however, the dislocations are not locked by precipitate and ky is temperature dependent. C. S. Tedmon and D. P. Ferriss (authors' reply)— We would like to thank Dr. Smallman for his interesting comments and discussion to our paper, "The Dependence of Yield Stress on Grain Size for Tantalum and a 10 pct W-90 pct Ta Alloy".18 It was suggested that perhaps the relatively small values obtained by us for ky of tantalum could be attributed to the same cause that accounts for the apparently small values of ky that result when it is determined by the Luders Strain technique. Since our values were obtained by plotting the lower yield stress vs the reciprocal of the square root of the grain size, it is not clear how this could be the case. The values of ky in this experiment have been calculated, using the Luders strain technique. With this method, values for ky on the order of 2 x 105 to 5 x lo6 cgs units were obtained. In spite of this rather large variation, the magnitudes are still small, and there appeared to be no good correlation between ky and the grain size or the yield stress, probably because of the difficulty in accurately extrapolating the work-hardening portion of the curve back to zero plastic strain. As was shown in the original data,18 there was little work hardening in any of the curves, at any temperature. In his discussion, Dr. Smallman also points out how ky has been observed to increase with increasing grain size, when determined by the Luders strain technique. There are at least two possible explanations for this. In the first case, if it is assumed that the bulk of the interstitial impurities are concentrated at the grain boundaries, then, of course, the available grain boundary area would decrease with increasing grain size, thus presenting less area for the interstitials, which would then presumably increase the concentration within the grains, thereby increasing the locking of the dislocations. In the second case, the increase in ky with increasing grain size would be attributed to the nature of the grain boundary itself. One of the several ways of deriving the Hall-Petch equation19 is based on the stress concentration arising from a pile-up of dislocations at the boundary. The ability of the stress concentration to unlock a source in a neighboring grain would depend on the strength of the grain boundary. As is well-known, the nature and struc-

The growth of computer and ground control technology in recent years, combined with an urgent demand for low-cost fossil fuels and mineral resources, has set the stage for full-scale utilization of computers in mine planning. Steeply rising production costs and the need to preserve the environment are placing great demands on engineers to improve their mining efficiencies, which can best be accomplished by applying the full capabilities of the computer. Pressure to develop and perfect programs with an immediate potential for improving mine design, reducing mining costs and extending the viable coal reserves of the country has already come to bear in the form of exploding energy requirements, environmental considerations and the visible limitations of other energy sources.

The furnace in which rimming steel is made has an important bearing on the quality of the steel produced. Furnace.—Particularly in the manufacture of low-carbon rimming steels, it is necessary to have an efficient, easily regulated furnace, because of the relatively high finishing temperature requirements. In recent years, the most important development in design of open-hearth furnaces has been the sealing and insulation of the greater part of the furnace to prevent air infiltration and loss of heat. Efficient, straight-line valves insure proper draft. Combustion controls guarantee correct gas-air ratios. Furnaces of all sizes ranging from 20 to 200 tons have been used successfully in the manufacture of rimming steels. Metal bath is varied from 20 to 40 in. in depth without appreciable variation in quality. Charging.—A normal open-hearth charge consists of pig iron (hot or cold), scrap of miscellaneous nature, and slag-making additions, such as limestone and burnt lime. Because of local conditions, some plants find it necessary to discard the use of pig iron and use some carbonaceolis substances with varying percentages of cast iron to replace the pig iron. It is questionable whether such practice will consistently produce the quality of rimming steel required for auto stampings and other severe drawing requirements. Pig Iron.—An open-hearth furnace under proper control should melt 150 tons of low-carbon rimming steel on about 35 to 38 per cent pig-iron charge basis.
