Zinc oxide, an n-type semiconductor, and nickel oxide, a p-type semiconductor, were studied in electrostatic separation experiments in pure and doped forms. In addition, pure potassium chloride and potassium chloride containing one volume per cent silver were also investigated. It was found, in agreement with theory, that the presence of dopants in the oxides could either increase or decrease the electrical conductivity of the base compounds and, thus, control the response of these particles to electrostatic separation. Further, it was shown that the same dopant in the n- and p-type semiconductors produced opposite conductivity effects; again in accord with theory. Finally, it was found that the presence of dispersed silver particles in the normally insulator phase potassium chloride produced sufficient electronic conductivity to cause the silver containing particles to respond as would materials possessing "medium-type" conductivities.

Approximately 850 delegates from 24 countries met in Tokyo, Japan, May 24-27, for the second MMIJ-AIME Joint Meeting in 55 years, to exchange technical knowledge and experience in the fields of exploration, mining, metallurgy and petroleum engineering. The first such meeting was held in 1917 in Kyoto, Japan. Although the Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan was the sponsor, the entire meeting (machinery exposition, technical program, and tours) was a joint effort of the two institutes.

THE International Smelting Co. concentrator at Tooele, Utah, first operated on a custom basis for the treatment of lead-zinc-iron ores on Nov.' 1, 1924, with a capacity of 500 tons per day. On May 1, 1925, the capacity was increased to 1000 tons per day by the addition of another 500-ton section. The concentrator has since operated on the two-section basis, each treating 500 tons per day entirely by flotation. LABORATORY AND TEST MILL In connection with the concentrator, a well-equipped laboratory and small continuous testing plant are maintained. The flotation equipment in the test plant is of both the Callow and Mineral Separations Sub-"A" types, so that actual concentrator conditions may be duplicated as closely as possible. PURCHASING OF ORE A new shipper usually sends to the plant a 25 to 50-lb. sample, representative of the ore to be shipped. Batch flotation tests are made on this sample to determine its amenability to the concentrator treatment flowsheet and reagent combinations. The results of these tests, which are accurately correlated with those obtained at the concentrator, both as to grades of products and recoveries, determine the actual value of the ore as submitted in the ore purchasing department's treatment schedule. Hearty cooperation has existed at all times between the ore purchasing and operating departments in the selection of ores as concentrator feed. ORE TREATED The basic tonnages for mixtures on the two sections come from the Park City and Bingham mining districts. The Park City tonnages are received by rail and consist of crude ores and gravity mill products. Those from the Bingham district are received by rail and aerial tramway,

INTRODUCTION Engineering studies of many near surface coal deposits that are amenable to strip mining can be enhanced and expedited by the application of computer techniques for defining coal reserves and overburden and intraburden yardage and their stripping ratios. The case study discussed herein could be from the western coalfields of Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana; the lignite deposits of the Dakotas or Texas, or from the strippable coal seams of the midwest. Because the techniques can be applied so universally, the actual map locations are not identified. The same computing principles apply to one seam or multiseam deposits, and the capability of the computing programs and plotting routines to display the coal seams in plan and sections provide excellent base maps for further engineering planning and mine layout studies. MANAGEMENT OF DRILL HOLE DATA Drilling for coalfield information is usually done at much wider centers than for other mineral deposits. The geologic logs of the holes are generally quite simple, and frequently record only major lithologies and depths to the top and bottom of the coal seams, together with hole collar survey information. A header card is prepared for each drill hole showing: Hole ID Northing Fasting Elevation Azimuth Dip The header card can be followed by any number of downhole lithologic intercept records: [Hole Depth Lithology Hole ID From-To Coal] Less data errors occur if the computer cards are punched directly from drill hole logs, thus eliminating opportunities for mistakes in transcribing data. All arithmetic manipulations should be left to the computer to avoid as much human error as possible. The SURVEY program is run over the raw data file and all lithologic intercepts are computed and defined in XYZ space. Many hydrated silicates have been synthesized and sold for commercial use. However, this paper discusses only hydrated calcium silicates and, to a lesser extent, hydrated magnesium silicates. Synthetic calcium silicates were first formed by man when he found that mixtures of silica or silicates and lime in water set up to form cements. The material which was responsible for the cementing properties was calcium silicate hydrate, although this fact was not recognized until early in this century. In the early 19001s, synthetic calcium silicates, reinforced with fibers and formed simply by reacting calcium hydroxide and silica in water with fiber at atmospheric or under low pressure autoclave conditions, found increased use in thermal insulations and in building products. These insulations were found to have a low thermal conductivity and would withstand temperatures up to 650°C. This, combined with their very low densities (from 8 to 50 Ib per cu ft) and fairly high strength, also made them suitable for use as building products. Following the disastrous Morro Castle fire of the 1930Js, calcium silicate board products were used as partitioning material in all shipboard construction in the U.S. As autoclaving techniques were improved and developed, it was: learned that under hydrothermal conditions new and useful calcium silicates which could be used under more extreme temperatures (up to 980' C) could be prepared. These had high surface areas and other unique properties which suited them for use as fillers, pesticide carriers, low temperature insulating materials, and adsorbents for the removal of fatty acids from various solutions. Hydrated magnesium silicates have not been studied as extensively as the calcium compounds. Their first important use was in the filtration of dry cleaning solutions for the removal of fatty acids. With the introduction of detergents, it was found that these products lost their advantage because of their high affinity for the detergent chemicals. However, in recent years these chemicals are finding increasing use as decolorizing agents for fats and anti-caking agents for resins. Some materials with very high surface are finding new use as adsorbents. CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE COMPOUNDS AND THElR CONDITIONS OF FORMATION Within the past ten years much has been done in the field of calcium silicate hydrate chemistry. As a result of this work it has been found that at least 25 different forms of calcium silicate hydrate can either be formed synthetically or found as naturally occurring materials. U.S.N.R., Chairman of the Division, and A L. Haider as associate chairmen. From that time until the symposium on petroleum economics was closed Thursday afternoon papers of exceptional interest and importance were presented and discussed in a most frank and open manner.

INTRODUCTION The Northern Great Plains Coal Province which occupies approximately 36.6 ha contains about one-half of the nation's total coal resources. About one million ha are underlain by coal that is considered to be mineable from the surface. The topography of the province is predominately plains, rolling hills, and some badland areas characterized by breaks or sharply eroded hills. Elevations range from about 1500 m above sea level on the west to about 600 m above sea level on the eastern boundary. The average slope of the ground is approximately 2 m per km. Streams in the province drain generally easterly and southeasterly (1). In the United States, the Northern Great Plains Province lies within the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. The coal within the province is located almost entirely in the states of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Although it is relatively low rank, the coal within the province encompasses a large portion of the total remaining U. S. reserves. The U. S. Geological Survey estimates the total remaining coal resources of the United States to be 2.6 trillion mt within 1000 m of the surface, and 2.9 trillion tons within 1830 m of the surface. Of this total, only about 177 billion mt are classified as reserves meaning that they are (1) known in location, quantity and quality from geologic evidence supported by engineering measurements, and (2) economically recoverable based on currently available technologies and current market value (2).

The volumetric behavior of isobutane at temperatures below its critical temperature has been studied by several investigators. Seibert and Burrelll measured the vapor pressure of isobutane from the ice point to the critical temperature. Dana and co-workers2 determined among other thermodynamic quantities the density of the saturated liquid and the saturated gas and the vapor pressure from approximately 0 to 130 F. Sage and Lacey3 studied a number of the thermodynamic properties of this hydrocarbon from 70" to 250" F. The specific volume in the gas and liquid region was determined at pressures up to 3000 Ib. per sq. in.? throughout this temperature interval. In addition, the vapor pressures were measured at 30" intervals. These data taken together serve to establish the thermodynamic behavior of isobutane at temperatures between 0" and 250" F. with reasonable accuracy. However, apparently there are no data available at the higher temperatures. For this reason an investigation of the volumetric behavior of isobutane at temperatures between 100" and 460" F. was carried out with apparatus that has been described in another paper (p. 136, this volume). Materials The isobutane used in this investigation was obtained from the Philgas Division of the Phillips Petroleum Co. That company's special analysis upon this sample indicated it to contain less than 0.03 mol per cent of impurities. In order to avoid traces of noncondensable gases, this hydrocarbon material was subjected to two successive fractionations at a high reflux ratio in a column approximately 4 ft. long and % in. in diameter, which was packed with small glass rings. The middle portion of distillate from the first fractionation was used in the second fraction-ation and a portion of the overhead from this second distillation process was repeatedly condensed at liquid-air temperatures at a pressure only slightly above the sublimation pressure of isobutane at this temperature.

The rolling and recrystallization textures in 300°C rolled uranium sheet were investigated using a Geiger counter diffractometer with the modified Schulz reflection technique. Seven sections of sheet material were used in order to obtain sufficient data for quantitative pole figures by the reflection technique. A special integrating specimen table was used for obtaining and recording the data automatically. The rolling texture was described in terms of several "ideal orientations" in which the stronger orientations have either the (1103 or (010) poles in the vicinity of the rolling direction. The recrystallization texture of the sheet uranium was also described by several "ideal orientations" which are somewhat different, except in one case, than the as-rolled "ideal orientations." RESULTS of an X-ray study of the deformation texture in rolled uranium rods were reported by Harris' in which a concentration of (010) and (110) poles was found in the rolling direction. More recently Seymour," Mitchell 'and Rowland,3 and Adam and Stephenson4 reported results obtained on uranium sheet rolled under various conditions of tem- perature and amount of reduction. Since the results of Seymour as opposed to those of the two other groups of investigators are not in full agreement, it seemed justifiable to publish the present data, obtained concurrently with the previously mentioned investigations.'-' The results with rolled and re-crystallized uranium sheet were also included in the paper, since they appear to be more complete than the only previously published texture data on recrystallized sheeL3 In the present investigation great care was taken to maintain complete separation of the reflections from different crystal planes, even in cases where the 20 angles differed from each other by less than

Production and Value In order that the figures of Table 1 may have any weight, a statement must be made to show how they were arrived at. Because, to the writer's knowledge, no accurate separate figures ever have been kept of the production and value of the Pittsburgh coal bed, the states will be considered separately. Pennsylvania Accurate figures are obtainable for Pennsylvania for recent years because recent reports of the Pellnsylvania Department of Mines show the production from each mine and the bed worked at each mine. For recent years, therefore, it is only necessary to list the mines working in the Pittsburgh bed and add up their production. The value was obtained by treating each county separately, applying the average price for the county to the production of Pittsburgh coal in that county. The problem of eliminating the hazards of hoisting in mines has been with us since the industry passed its earliest stages, when coal and ore could be won from surface working and tunnels. At first, safety devices were introduced as means of decreasing the amount of labor necessary to produce the mineral, or to increase the amount that could be obtained from a certain opening. For example, crude ladders replaced winding footpaths or steps cut into the walls of the pit or shaft, decreasing the distance it was necessary to carry the product to the surface and eliminating, to some extent, the hazard introduced by the precarious footing afforded by such paths and steps. Latcr, instead of being carried from the pit on the backs of men, the product was hoisted in buckets or baskets on a rope passing over a pulley or around a windlass. Thus the capacity of the pit was considerably increased, and the hazard due to making many trips up and down the shaft was eliminated. From such beginnings accident prevention in mine hoisting advanced with the importance of the industry, until at present hoisting compares favorably with other branches of the mining industry with reference to safe practices. As in the other branches, this progress has been accomplished along two general lines—by legislation, rules, and education, and by the installation of safety devices. Though due credit must be given the former, it is not so satisfactory as the latter. Legislation, to be effective, requires a policing and inspection system to guarantee enforcement, such as we cannot hope to inaugurate. Rules may be satisfactory so long as the employer controls the labor market, and dismissal or some other form of discipline is an effective means of insuring obedience to the rules; but where labor demand is in excess of the supply, or where labor organizations are in control, such measures are not effective. An educational campaign will draw attention to hazards and may awaken a desire to avoid accidents by exercising the proper care. It is necessary, therefore, to place our reliance mainly on mechanical devices to prevent accidents, and to depend as little as possible on laws,

Very often important discoveries are made in one industry that may be used to advantage in another, but, owing to the rarity that men step out of one industry into another, these discoveries remain unknown outside of the trade or profession in which they are made. The present paper is written solely with the object of bringing to the notice of mining and metallurgical engineers a centrifugal ore-concentrator which eventually may have a great application. Ore- Grading. Fig. 1 represents the action which takes place when solids of different dimensions are stirred up in a box and allowed to settle as minerals of the same size but of different specific gravity. This principle is applied practically in grading china-clay and in enriching tin-slimes. In the latter case the slimes are stirred around in a tub with water and allowed to settle while at the same time the side of the tub is struck with a hammer. The colloidal slimes are then poured off and various slices taken off horizontally. The great drawback of this process is that the particles are deposited horizontally and all the colloids are lost. Fig. 2 represents the action in which the particles are deposited side by side. Here the drawback is the great length of the box needed in order to prevent excessive loss. The alternative to lengthening the box is to increase the force of gravity. Centrifugal force may be regarded practically as the force of gravity augmented. Fig. 3 illustrates the Gee centrifugal machine for grading ores. The sulphation roast-leach process for complex sulphides results in phase changes due to roasting and leaching. The phases in the calcine, and in the neutral and hot acid leach residues were identified and their degree of liberation determined in order to design and Interpret separation tests on the residues. The hot acid leach residue was composed of hematite, silica, and lead sulphate with some associated silver. Magnetic separation was selected as the process for producing a lead concentrate, as the non-magnetic product. Separation was limited by -1 pm hematite reporting to the product, and hematite/lead sulphate agglomerates reporting to the magnetics.

The H-Coal process, an ebullated bed reactor system for converting coal to liquid fuel, is described. Results from long-duration continuous flow bench-scale operations with Wyoming Wyodak, Arizona Black Mesa, and Utah Kaiparowits Plateau coals are presented. Economic data on the conversion of these coals to liquid products are given. The potentials of the H-Coal process in regard to coal from western producers is stressed.

The delay time for the initiation of slip was studied in single crystals of a brass, aluminum, and ß brass. A delay time for slip was found in ß brass when the specimens were tested below room temperature; however, one was not found for a brass or aluminum. A general theory for the existence of the brittle transition temperature is proposed. A LTHOUGH a considerable amount of effort has A been devoted to the study of the deformation and fracture of single crystals, the vast majority of the work was concerned with static tests or with tests carried out at relatively slow strain rates. The necessity for the study of a possible incubation time for slip becomes apparent when the various theories which have been postulated for the elucidation of the mechanism of slip are considered. The existence of an incubation period would strongly indicate that slip occurs by a process of nucleation and growth; whereas the absence of an incubation would present rather convincing evidence that slip occurs by a cataclysmic process. In addition to shedding light on the process of plastic deformation, an understanding of the early stages of plastic deformation may be helpful in finding an explanation for the brittle behavior of the body-centered metals under certain conditions. It is well known that these metals, such as iron, molybdenum, tungsten, ß brass, etc., will become brittle as the test temperature is lowered or the strain rate is increased. In spite of the fact that this subject has received considerable attention since the turn of the century, no adequate theory exists today which explains the phenomenon. In the ductile temperature range the metal breaks with a "fibrous" fracture after considerable slip has taken place. In the brittle temperature range the metal fails essentially by cleavage on the {loo) planes: however, some plastic flow is always present even in the most brittle fractures. It is possible, as will be explained later, to ascribe this brittle behavior to the length of the incubation time for slip. Clark and Wood,' using polycrystalline metals, showed that a delay time existed for the yield point in mild steels and that the delay time depended upon the applied stress. These authors stated that the delay time was observed only with those materials for which the stress-strain curve showed a definite yield point. In their work only the mild steel specimens exhibited a delay time at the yield point, while the other materials studied-type 302 stainless steel, SAE 4130 normalized steel, SAE 4130 quenched and tempered steel, 24s-T aluminum—did not show a delay time. These authors' in an extension of their work, found that as the temperature was lowered the delay time was increased. It is, then, the purpose of this investigation to measure or to set an upper limit on the delay time for plastic flow in single crystals of a brass, aluminum, and ß brass. The delay time will also be studied as a function of temperature. The incubation time may be measured by determining the length of time the specimen will support a stress without slip occurring when the stress is greater than the static critical resolved shear stress. In order to accomplish these measurements use was made of a pendulum which was so designed that a single crystal specimen could be placed at various positions along its length. When a pendulum is struck by another pendulum of the same length, an elastic wave is transmitted down the bar with the velocity of sound in the material and is reflected from the far end of the bar. The reflected wave then travels back and unloads the stress until it reaches the impacted end of the bar and the two pendulums separate. The length of time that the specimen is subjected to the stress is equal to the time it takes for the stress wave to travel twice the distance from the specimen to the end of the bar. The stress applied to the specimen is governed by the velocity of impact of the two pendulums. The stress at which the specimen first suffers plastic: deformation was determined in these experiments by examining the specimen under the microscope for the first appearance of slip lines and by measuring the residual strain after each impact. In these experiments the critical resolved shear stress was approached from the low stress side and no attempt was made to determine it exactly. To determine it exactly, it would have been necessary to find that stress at which slip would have just started. However, since the stresses were increased in rather small increments the critical stress is believed to be approached rather closely, as will be seen from the experimental results.
