Rock mechanics, like all engineering disciplines, must have a theoretical foundation. The subject of this chapter is the formulation of analytical methods that may aid in the rational design and determination of the stability of engineering structures in competent brittle rock materials. By an engineering structure in rock, we mean any (1) excavated sub- surface opening, (2) open surface structure, or (3) system of openings in rock that is virtually self-supporting-that is, not requiring artificial systems to carry structural stresses. One factor necessary for designing or evaluating a structure's stability is knowledge of the material's mechanical properties, such as stress-strain behavior and fracturing characteristics. The composition of most structural materials such as metals and concrete is uniform and reproducible to the degree that their mechanical properties in service are nearly the same as those measured in the laboratory. Consequently, a rational design can be made on the basis of published mechanical property values. The same equivalence does not exist for rock materials for two reasons: (1) the composition of even the most common rock types is highly variable, and (2) the problem of the size effect is present. Mechanical property tests not conducted at a scale that includes these effects in normal proportion will not be representive of the in-situ rock mass. Of course, the alternative is to perform the test in-situ. Comparatively few mechanical property tests have been performed in-situ because of the physical limitations of test equipment and the prohibitive cost. The current procedure is to design a structure based on small-scale laboratory measurements, with a safety factor usually determined by the experience of the design engineer. While this procedure is somewhat unsatisfactory, laboratory measurements can and do provide a useful basis for the initial design.

The gold precipitate from the zinc-dust presses in the cyanide plant of the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co., Treadwell, Alaska, is treated, in the refinery adjoining, by the Tavener or lead-smelting method. About 3 or 4 tons of this precipitate is produced monthly having 'a gold assay value of $40,000 to $60,000 per ton. It was formerly the practice to treat the byproducts from this process, consisting of 2 tons of slag, 300 lb. of matte, 500 1b. of refinery refuse, flue dust, etc., in a 24-in. water-jacketed blast furnace. This practice was discontinued in the summer of 1914 by reason of the difficulty of keeping the lead-well open when treating a high-grade lead product; of preventing the loss of gold in the flue dust; and of avoiding injury to the general health of the refinery operators; a plain single-phase electric furnace was substituted for the blast furnace. The furnace was constructed from an old steel acid drum by cutting off the top and introducing a cable, made from strands of bare copper wire, through the bottom and spreading the strands out fan-shaped on the inside of the drum. Powdered graphite, obtained by grinding up old crucibles, mixed with 10 per cent. cement, was tamped wet into the bottom of the drum, around and completely covering the copper wires. The graphite was carried up to the bottom of the furnace, or lead-well, and acted as the lower electrode. The sides were built up of ordinary firebrick forming a melting chamber 14 in. in diameter by 20 in. high. The upper electrodes, of graphite or carbon, are 3 in. in diameter and 40 in. long, arranged with joints enabling new electrodes to be connected without shutting down or wasting stubs. A screw feed was arranged for raising and lowering the upper electrode. (Figs. 1 and 2.) The cover for the furnace had three openings, one for feeding the charge, one for the escape of gases, and one in the center for the introduction of the electrode. It was later found more practical to enlarge this center opening to 6 in. in diameter, to allow of a central feeding of the charge around the electrode.

The library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P. M. except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

UNEXPECTED brittle failures of metals in practical applications are a serious problem to many industries and to the nation as a whole. Considerable effort has been devoted to studies of the brittle behavior in metals. However, the major portion of this effort has been directed at developing techniques and apparatus for the purposes of determining the susceptibility of metals to brittle failure and of making various types of observations of the phenomena. Relatively minor effort has been made to understand the basic mechanisms involved in initiating brittle failures. A more complete understanding of the nature and mechanism of the brittle failure problem would be very helpful in efforts directed toward predicting and avoiding brittle failure and toward the development of suitable materials and designs that are not susceptible to a brittle behavior. The intent of the present investigation is to acquire this basic understanding. The pronounced transition from a ductile-to-brittle behavior is most prevalent in metals having the body-centered-cubic lattice structure, primarily be- cause metals of this structure exhibit a strong dependence of yield strength upon temperature and the rate of straining. The generally recognized qualitative concept of the ductile-to-brittle transition is that brittle (cleavage) failure occurs when the yield strength exceeds the cleavage fracture strength. This condition can apparently be achieved by decreasing temperature or increasing strain rate. Likewise, a normally ductile metal can be made to fracture in an apparently brittle manner by the introduction of triaxial stresses (notches) where the ratio of normal to shear stresses can be increased to such an extent that the normal stress exceeds the fracture strength before the critical shear stress for plastic flow is achieved. Neither of these concepts require any prior plastic deformation or explain why the observed fracture strengths are so much less than the theoretical cohesive strength. The results of several investigations of the ductile-to-brittle transition in body-centered-cubic metals illustrate rather conclusively that measurable amounts of nonelastic deformation do precede cleavage fracture, even at extremely low temperatures. The modulus of elasticity is defined as the ratio of stress within the proportional limit to corresponding strain. This property, as thus defined, is a constant for each kind of material; and in tension or compression is usually designated by the symbol E. The modulus of elasticity serves as an index of the stiffness of a material or a measure of its ability to resist change of shape under stresses not higher than the proportional limit. In view of the frequency with which the modulus of elasticity is used in engineering calculations, it is surprising to note the uncertainty that exists as to authentic values, and the marked lack of published information relating to the variation of the constant E within individual alloy systems. A value of 10,000,000 Ib. per sq. in. has been quoted as representative of aluminum and its alloys. This value has been found to be approximately corrcct for pure aluminum and aluminum alloys in which the total percentage of the alloying elements is low, but seriously in error in the case of alloys that contain relatively large amounts of the alloying elements. a National Metals Handbook. b Intcrnatiunal Critical Tables. In the upgrading of finely disseminated iron ores, selective desliming is the critical step that must be controlled to achieve efficient flotation. A prerequisite for selective desliming is a properly-dispersed pulp; sodium silicate is commonly used as a dispersant. The mechanism by which sodium silicate acts as a dispersant in the presence of calcium ions was examined by streaming potential measurements, settling tests, abstraction density determinations, selective flocculation tests, and scanning electron microscope observations. The study established that calcium silicate precipitates on the mineral surfaces dispersed the pulp. Although sodium silicate was a nonselective dispersant, the addition of corn starch aided flocculation of goethite over quartz at low silicate additions, but became ineffective at higher silicate levels. A model is presented to explain the dispersant mechanism of sodium silicate in the presence of calcium ion for selective flocculation of iron ores.

THE actual procedure in estimating depth of overburden from mag-netic observations made on the surface will vary with the form of the deposit and any theoretical discussion will apply only so far as the form of the deposit conforms to the mathematical premises on which the theory is based. Since the shapes of natural deposits in the field cannot be expressed rigorously in mathematical form, the best that can be done is to assume some simple form and deduce results. Fortunately many small variations in form produce only slight changes in the estimated depth of overburden, therefore the methods have a definite practical value. For the theoretical treatment, magnetic ore deposits may be divided roughly into three classes, depending upon whether the magnetic anom-alies may be considered to arise from (1) a single magnetic pole, (2) a dike or (3) a magnetic doublet. Particular cases, falling under one or other of these classes, have been discussed by different authors.1-4 In general, it may be stated that when the magnetic effects as measured on the surface are due only to one pole of the body, the other pole being so remote that its effect may be neglected, the resultant anomaly F at any point will vary as the inverse square of the distance r of the point from the pole, which may be expressed mathematically by F = k/r2, where k is a constant. When the deposit occurs in the form of a long, thin dike, the resultant anomaly will be of the form F = k'/r and when the deposit is in the shape of a lens, so that both poles have an appreciable effect on the surface, the result will be similar to that caused by a magnetic doublet, and the form will be F = k'/r3. The particular class under which a deposit falls may be deduced from the results of the magnetic survey. The second class is readily found, but there may be difficulty in deciding between the first and third. Isody-namic contours of both the vertical and horizontal anomalies will often be a good guide in making a correct decision.

Preliminary investigations based on the concept of cross-power indicate that quantitative volume percentages of minerals, including quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, fluorite, and chalcopyrite can be obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis. Pulverized samples are scanned from 4° to 65°, 2e, using a Norelco diffractometer, with the output recorded on a punched tape at 40 intervals per degree, 29. Errors from crystal orientation are minimized by (1) gridded surface packing, (2) sample spinning, and (3) quantitative measurement of all major diffraction peaks. Computer programming enables rapid quantitative evaluation of X-ray diffraction data. Results to date indicate that most minerals analyses can be performed within an accuracy of ±2%. Metallurgical applications include analysis of various flotation concentrates and tailings.

Shales containing "kerogen," or bituminous matter, which on destructive distillation yield oily and tarry matters resembling petroleum are here designated as oil-shales. They differ from oil-bearing shales from which petroleum may be obtained by so-called mechanical means. The educts obtained by the destructive distillation resemble some or all the varieties of petroleum, depending on the character of the shale and the mode of treatment. Some shale oils have a paraffin base, some an asphaltic base, or a combination; some run high in sulfur compounds. The methods of refining and cracking, therefore, are essentially the same as are used in refining petroleums. In 1860, in this country, over fifty companies were successfully distilling various natural bituminous materials for the production of " coal oil," used for illuminating purposes. The discovery of petroleum and the failure of these companies to save and utilize the valuable byproduct, ammonia, brought about their inevitable doom. Prior to that time, more or less successful efforts were made to produce from the shales of Scotland oils for illuminating and heating purposes. Competition of native petroleum from the United States early eliminated some of these companies and with the entrance of oil from the Russian and other fields into the world's markets, the Scottish oil-shale industry underwent serious and trying experiences until, in 1916, only four (Scottish) were paying concerns. These survived only through energy and the application of skill in saving valuable byproducts. A few companies have successfully operated in France and New Zealand. The Canadian Government showed active interest in the New Brunswick shales, which exist in quantity and are more valuable than the Scottish shales. The retarded development of that valuable asset of the Province of New Brunswick was most unfortunate, especially when the product was so much needed in the prosecution of the war. THE Teziutlan copper-zinc deposit is supposed to be of late Cambrian or early Paleozoic age. The country rocks are a series of schists or phyllites, flat lying and in the form of a plunging anticline. The ore deposit occupies a single horizon in the schist for a known horizontal extent of 1200 meters. Along its strike occur four large lenses or ore bodies. These ore bodies occupy positions along the flank and extend to the crest of the anticline. The primary mineralization is in the form of quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena, with a few scattered silver anti-monides. Quartz and pyrite form the mineralization between the ore lenses. In the ore lenses the sulphides appear as a massive, very fine-grained intergrowth of minerals. The intergrowth suggests a contemporaneous deposition of the heavy sulphides. The grain size, usually under 0.09 mm., makes the separation difficult and fine grinding important. The ore bodies were formed at great depth by solutions probably originating in the same basic magma that gave rise to the dolerite sills that are so common in their vicinity.

The White Pine mine site lies five miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County, Mich. Copper sulfide, mixed with some native copper, is mined by a room-and-pillar system from gently dipping Upper Kewee-nawan sediments. Depth of mining now varies from 700 to 1800 ft and the ore body continues to a depth of at least 3400 ft. An area roughly 21/2 miles square has already been mined. Mining height has varied from 61/2 to 22 ft. A rock mechanics program was set up in late 1963 to promote safety and mining efficiency. This note reports some of the findings. Rock Strength Compressive strength of small, dry specimens of sandstones, siltstones, and shales from the ore zone varies from 20,000 to 30,000 psi. This is intermediate between the softer coal mine sediments and the meta-morphic and igneous rocks of hard rock mines. Annual Cycle of Rock Failure Since 1963, every roof and pillar failure involving more than a few tons of rock has been examined and documented. Some 1500 stations have been installed for measuring convergence, -c1/1000 in., with Invar extensometers. In airborne gravity surveys effects of acceleration and irregular movements of the aircraft must be balanced out or overcome. The gradient of vertical gravity is recorded, therefore, by using two masses instead of one. As the amplitude variations are infinitesimal and difficult to measure accurately, at present it is enough to determine whether variation of gradient during flight is positive or negative. This paper discusses the primary computer programs used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Bruceton Safety Technology Center to evaluate coal refuse disposal plans. These programs are currently being used by private consultants, government, and the coal industry for today's coal refuse disposal problems. This paper outlines five programs, their special features, and their importance in the design and construction of coal refuse disposal facilities. The purpose of the paper is to present the general steps necessary in the computer-modeling of each program. The programs that are discussed include BISHOP, STABL, RWE, DAMS2, and HEC-2, which cover the subject areas of slope stability, hydrographs, flood routing, and water surface profiles.

The measures overlying some coal beds are under stress as the result of geological movements after the measures have been deposited. The removal of the coal in the process of mining induces additional stress in the roof measures. Certain types of deposits have sufficient inherent strength to be self-supporting over definite width of excavations and the stress is adjusted without appreciable movement of the material, to the extent that no part of the material will become detached and fall. The uplifting of the measures in geological time often results in the establishing of cleat planes or planes of weakness in the measures overlying the coal, and these planes generally have a uniform direction. Measures that have not been subject to uplifts are less liable to have noncompensable stresses, although any method of underground mining results in the creation of stress in the roof measures over the excavations and over the coal pillars. The immediate roof measures extending upwards of 10 to 15 ft. above the coal give the greatest concern in maintaining the roof in the advance work in the solid coal. Immediate measures which are inherently weak often may be scaled and supported for indefinite periods by a system of timbering. As an excavation is made, the pillars adjoining must take on the weight previously supported by the coal removed. The roof over the excavations takes on the function of a beam and if too weak to be self-supporting it will fail either through shearing or bending, and the roof cavity may enlarge until a self-supporting arch is formed. As support is removed by taking the coal away, there is a tendency for the roof members to move toward the excavation in an effort to compensate the stress; particularly is this true where there is an overlying bed of clay, which may act as a lubricant on which adjoining members may slide. Unstabilized stresses, plus the force of gravity, plus the inherent strength of the material, govern the tendency of mine roof to fall when not supported by timber. In general, most mine roof depresses when the coal is removed. This depression may be in the nature of a sag as the result of bending, or the edges of the pillar may break away or the floor may come up or heave.

Up to 1909 the American public had little knowledge of, or interest in, potash. Some remembered that it had to do with soft soap and sore throat, but further they knew not. In 1909-10, the German-American potash war, and the publicity attending hostilities, brought home to America the knowledge that potash was an important article of commerce; that Germany monopolized its production and distribution, and exercised all the prerogatives attending complete control. The present war, with its transportation embargo, has again directed attention to Germany's strength as a potash producer and her present unfortunate situation as a distributor. As a consequence, the search for potash takes on new life and it again becomes a subject of general interest. My first knowledge of potash came from a study of the German potash exhibit at the World's Fair in 1893. This investigation led to the recommendation that Armour & Co. engage in the manufacture of commercial fertilizers and the fertilizer branch was organized early in 1894. From then to now "potash" has been a live subject. Two and eight-tenths per cent. of the earth's crust consists of potassium oxide. It is an important constituent of feldspar, granite, and other igneous rocks. Potash is valuable commercially in a water-soluble form. In igneous rocks it is locked in so tight that it is of little value and no utilization in a commercial way has been made of these insoluble forms. Potash in water-soluble form is found in large deposits in Germany; in smaller deposits in Austria and Spain; and in brines in some of our Western arid basins. The deposits in Germany, Austria, and Spain are concentrations from sea waters containing potash derived from the decomposition of potash-bearing rocks.

Uranium exploration in the North Shore area of Lake Huron goes back to 1847 when J. L. LeConte, a distinguished American geologist, identified a pitchblende-like mineral which he called coracite from specimens sent from a locality north of Sault Ste. Marie. In 1948 a search for the LeConte occurrence resulted in discovery of the Camray field, some 70 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie. Prospecting the Camray field yielded about 30 pitchblende occurrences spread over approximately 200 sq miles. Almost without exception these discoveries consisted of narrow, short, pitchblende-filled fractures, within or along the contacts of diabase dykes cutting pre-Cambrian Archean granite and gneiss. Eight discoveries were diamond drilled and three were explored underground, but none proved to be of economic value. Uranium prospecting at this time spread far afield, and it was in 1949 that radioactive conglomerate was discovered in Long Township of the Algoma district midway between and 90 miles from Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury. F. Joubin examined this discovery at that time but could not interest capital in its development.

TRIAL installations of rock bolts, of the slit-rod-and-wedge type, were under way at several units of Day Mines, Inc., when Korean hostilities interrupted the already slow deliveries of steel bars to the Coeur d'Alene district. Factory-made bolts had not yet been put on the local market, so the program was halted for lack of supplies. Interest was revived by a visitor's description of wooden roof bolts. These were said to have been used briefly with apparent success in a coal mine, until apprehension voiced by the U. S. Bureau of Mines caused the practice to be suspended. To make wooden bolts for trial in ground support, Day Mines acquired a second-hand doweling machine equipped with two cutting heads, one to turn out the desired round rods of 2-in. diam, the other to turn out 1-in. rods to be used as powder-tamping sticks. This machine was installed in the all-weather sawmill of the Hercules mine unit at Burke, Idaho, where fabrication of the wooden bolts commenced early in 1951. Most of the mining in the Coeur d'Alene district is along steeply dipping veins in shaly quartzite and argillite of Algonkian age. Ground support commonly is required in zones where the rocks have been sheared, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered. Pressure from the sidewalls is more troublesome than weight overhead, but both increase with the size of the mine opening. Caving may come from a progressive sloughing of irregular rock fragments or from an exfoliation and buckling of the layered wall rocks. The disintegration is thought to develop from an initial elastic expansion of the rock toward the newly-created mine opening, followed by the dilation of many tiny partings in the rock by absorption of water. As the partings widen, masses of rock develop weight and become free to fall. The function of rock bolts is to prevent or retard widening of partings in the rock supported. Wooden Bolts, Wedges and Headboards Bolt assembly used by Day Mines consists of a bolt 4 or 6 ft long, two wedges 16 in. long, and a headboard 30 in. long, Fig. 1. All four pieces are made of local red (Douglas) fir, either green or well-soaked in the mill pond before it enters the sawmill. Bolts are fabricated from cants, 2 1/4 in. sq, cut from relatively straight-grained timber with a minimum of knots and trimmed to 4- and 6-ft lengths. The bolt then is turned in the doweling machine from 21/4 in. sq to 2 in. diam round, except for a 4-in. length at one end which is left full square to provide the striking head and the shoulder that holds the headboard in position for wedging. The foot end of the bolt is slit with a thin saw for a length of about 16 in., thereby making a slot to receive the wedge against which the bolt is driven for anchorage at the bottom of the rock hole. A similar slit, 12 in. long, is made in the opposite (head) end of the bolt to receive the second wedge, which crowds the headboard against the ground at the collar of the rock hole and puts the bolt in tension. The second slot is aligned 90" from the plane of the first slot to avoid Longitudinal splitting and is notched out slightly to allow easier insertion of the collar wedge after the bolt has been driven to bottom. To prevent splitting the headboard by spreading action of the head wedge, this slot is oriented at 90" to the grain of the headboard when the pieces are assembled, Fig. 2. The wedges are similar to standard mine wedges, but more slender; they are cut 1 7/8 in. wide and 1 in. thick at the heel and taper out in 16 in. of length. The headboard, or bearing plate, is not necessary for some types of ground but generally is desirable because it helps the bolt to support an area of loose, friable rock and reduces the tendency for the rock at the collar of the hole to split away from the wedged head by distributing the pressure over a wider rock surface. The headboard may be a 24-to 30-in. length of 3-in. plank, 8 to 12 in. wide, but a similar length of rounded sawmill slab serves equally well at 20 pct of the cost. A hole of 2-in. diam is bored or punched through the center of the headboard, either at 90" or at various high angles to its surface. The bolt is inserted to its shoulder through this hole, then driven into the rock hole. Bolts, wedges, and headboards are given a full timber preservative treatment to inhibit rot. Bundles of each are immersed in a warm saturated solution of Osmose salts in water for 48 hr, removed, dripped dry, and stored in a relatively humid underground depot to cure. Most wooden rock bolts used by Day Mines are 4 ft long. Holes to receive them, about 42 in deep and 2 1/8 in. in diam, are drilled into the rock' to be supported, nearly normal to the periphery of the mine opening. The type of drill used is dictated by convenience: stoper, jackleg, or jumbo-mounted drifter. Correct depth of the hole is assured by use of a measuring stick that has been cut to the proper distance from drill chuck to the ground at the collar of the hole when a standard length drill rod is at the bottom. The bolt is seated to the shoulder through the hole in the headboard, the foot-end wedge is placed in its slot, and the assembly is inserted into the rock hole.
