The Cliffs Shaft mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., located in the city of Ishpeming, Mich., is the largest producer of hard hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The two shafts, A and B, lying 820 ft. (250 m.) apart on the east-west trend of the ore formation, were sunk in the early eighties, and, except for four years, have been steady producers of iron ore. Their location, on a hill overlooking the general offices of the company on the one side and the city of Ishpeming on the other, has made the shaft houses landmarks. In the spring of 1919, as the old wooden shaft houses had become shaky and out of line, and would soon be unsafe, it was necessary to replace them with the least possible delay. Three plans of construction were, therefore, considered: To replace the old shaft houses by somewhat similar structures made of wood; to use steel and radically change the design; or to build reinforced-conerete shaft houses outside of the wooden structures, completely enclosing them. The first plan was disapproved, because it is anticipated that the mine will have a long life and the proximity of other buildings makes the danger from fire rather great. Delay in receiving material, and the necessity for closing the shafts during erection, were other factors in the situation. The second plan was disapproved on account of the high cost of steel, slow delivery, and interference with hoisting during the period of erection. The presence near one of the shafts of a large bed of hard gravel suitable for concrete made the cost of the third plan considerably less than the second, and little, if any, delay in hoisting was expected. Our expectations in this regard were fully realized. Furthermore, the work could be done by unskilled labor, which was plentiful, and the erection could be quickly started. When the proposition was submitted to W. G. Mather, president of the company, he recommended that, on account of the prominence of the buildings due to their location, an effort should be made to combine in the design as far as practicable something of architectural beauty. In the year 1820 a commission, assisted by Sr. C. Fernando de Ainada, was appointed by Sr. Jose Ramon Mila de la Roca to report on the condition of the mining region of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, where in recent years the mines of Batopilas have reached an important development under American management. The object of the inquiry was to provide Sr. De la Roca with facts to support a project for reopening mines that two centuries before had produced a large amount of silver. Although this plan failed, many facts of interest in the history of the mines were presented.. Much of the report dealt with questions that had only local application or were restricted to the conditions of labor and equipment in the opening of the nineteenth century. The historical part is presented in the following paragraphs: Abstract of the Report. Notwithstanding the difficulty of forming a just estimate of the system of mines in this mineral group in the valley of Senor Sail Jose del Parral without an examination of each of them, that which we shall say in a general way will suffice to convey an idea of their value and of the urgent necessity of reopening them. If this is undertaken, we believe the results will be of the highest consequence to the Republic, as well as to this immediate locality. The group of the Villa del Parral covers the mineral territory in which the village of that name was located. Its moantains contain large metallic veins, from which, as from the trunk of a tree, depend others much more slender, locally called ,fibras, crossing and interlacing each other in many directions. An observation that is finding fresh confirmation in the leadership of the Allied Nations is "When the need arises, a man will rise to fill it." Much the same can be said of industrial advances in the current emergency. Events and circumstances have created needs for new materials and stimulated the inventive genius of man to fill them. The timely development of fibrous-glass manufacture, in relation to present war needs, is a case in point. Historical Summary It is probable that the first glass fibers produced by the hand of man were made about 4000 years ago. Successful production of glass fibers for manifold industrial and military uses, on any scale that could begin to meet present needs, has a history spanning a scant four years. The American processes that brought this young industry into being were developed between the years 1931 and 1937; research and manufacturing efforts were consolidated to create a commercially satisfactory operation as late as November 1939. In the 40 months that have elapsed since then, the industry has achieved commercial importance, supplied immense quantities of materials for pre-war industrial expansion to meet "defense" and Lend-Lease needs, and now has reached such importance that it has come largely under the control of the War Production Board for equitable distribution of its major products among 13 claimant agencies. It is worthy of note, however, that the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, began exploratory use of fibrous-glass products in 1932, within one year after the date of the first experimental trials of the new process. This early recognition of the military importance of fibrous glass gave impetus to further research work. The foregoing rapid scanning of historical development must be filled in, lest the. impression be created that glass fibers were suddenly created out of thin air, with no antecedent trials, failures, and partial successes. The actual history of glassmaking is lost in antiquity. Probably some nomadic tribesman found molten glass beneath the bed of a hot campfire built upon sand of the proper composition. If his curiosity led him to poke the glowing, viscous pool with a green-wood stick or some handy weapon, it is probable that he drew a glass fiber on the end of his implement. Molten glass has much the same consistency as honey or molasses; it strings out tenuously. Thus, it is quite possible that the first form of glass shaped by man's action was a glass fiber. Artisans in glass, throughout the long Direc- of glassmaking as an art> drew fibers from fine rods for many decorative applications, including "spun glass" decoration in beautiful stemware and the charming millefiori (glass flowers encased in solid glass), and even to create the blood vessels in glass eyes to match a bleary mate.

The development of a geological department as an integral part of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham district, Alabama, in 1908 was an innovation probably unique for any mining organization south of the Ohio River. At that time a few of the oil companies were starting geological departments, but there were no geologists among the larger industrial organizations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. had been a substantial producer of pig iron for many years and was just getting a start in the manufacture of steel products from the pig iron. It had large acreages of coal land, ore land and timber land, but there was lacking the detailed knowledge of the possible mineral resources of much of its territory, and this territory at that time covered an area in the neighborhood of 500,000 acres in the states of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Those responsible for the operations of the mining properties, not being familiar with the kind of help that might be expected from geologic work, were decidedly skeptical of the utility of the work. Therefore it was necessary to develop cooperation with the mining organization, by not infringing upon its functions, and by developing the work in such a manner as to demonstrate to the mining department its practical utility. In the first instance the man responsible for a mining operation is apt to assume the attitude that the geologist is a blockader, because the geologist, unfortunately, is obliged to point out difficulties in the carrying out of mining operations in the way originally planned. He points out the dangers of mining out one coal or metal seam at the ultimate expense of an upper or lower seam, and he develops structural features, such as faults and folds, which call to the attention of the mining operator difficulties in his future operations, which the latter had not anticipated. Eventually, however, the value of having these data became apparent to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., and the operators not only welcomed the geological work and cooperated fully in its acquisition of essential information, but reached the point of asking assistance and advice; and complete coordination of the two activities has existed for many years.

Oil wells usually reach their maximum daily output shortly after they are completed. From that time they decline in-production, the rapidity of decline depending on the output of the wells and on other' factors governing their productivity. The production curve of a well shows the mount of oil produced per unit of time for several consecutive periods; if the conditions affecting the rate of production are not changed by outside influences, the curve will be fairly regular, and, if projected, mill furnish useful knowledge as to the future production of the well. The equilibria at 1 atm total pressure and 600° to 1300°C (1112° to 2372°F) between gas mixtures with various partial pressures of the reactive constituents (principally sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen or carbon monoxide, and hydrogen) and coexisting solid phases (groups variously including calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, iron, ferrous sulfide, and the iron oxides) are examined. Tables and charts show the combinations of temperature, oxygen activity, and carbon dioxide partial pressure under which the various groups of the solid phases coexist and the corresponding sulfur dioxide pressures. In the presence of calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, and calcium oxide, the partial pressure of sulfur dioxide has a peak value at each temperature which increases from 101 atm at about 800°C (1472°F) to 1 atm at about 1200°C (2192°F). With water vapor present, hydrogen sulfide may predominate among gaseous sulfur compounds, particularly at low temperatures and oxygen activities; under all other circumstances considered, sulfur dioxide is the dominant gaseous sulfur-bearing species.

IT is obvious that details such as the physical and chemical properties and methods of heat-treating of the materials mentioned must be omitted in a paper on the subject of materials used in oil-refinery pumps1. Only sufficient identification is given to enable the reader to find additional information from already published data. Also, the subject covers many operating conditions, but only the most important services can be discussed here. To the oil refiner, the pumping equipment is of vital interest. Practically every refinery operation, from the charging of crude oil to a distillation unit to the shipping of refined products, involves some form of pumping machinery. Intermediate refining stages involve a great variety of pumping machinery to carry out successfully the aims of the refinery technologist. Temperatures at which oils are handled vary from -50° F. to 900° F. Pressure may vary from subatmospheric to 2000 lb. per sq. inch. The selection of the proper materials involves a careful consideration of the conditions under which the particular pump must operate. The four, most important considerations are temperature, pressure, corrosion, and abrasion or wear. Consideration of temperature may be divided into three parts: (1) extremely low temperatures of the order of -50° F.; (2) temperatures at atmospheric or slightly above; .(3) temperatures from 200° to 900° F. Pressures fall into two groups: (1) pressures reached by ordinary trade pumps of the order of. 200 lb. per sq. in., (2) extreme pressure conditions involving pressures as high as 2000 lb. Noncorrosive and corrosive oils can be treated differently. Under the latter falls corrosion in the presence of water, which will occur up to 250° F. The second type of corrosion occurs in high-temperature pumping equipment, with temperatures from 450° to 900° F., largely caused by sulfur compounds. As one surveys the extensive taconite operations on the Mesabi Range, he may find it difficult to believe that only 15 years ago, the iron ore mining industry here was staring at its own imminent demise. Due to the high demands for iron ore during World War II the postwar period of 1946-1950, and the subsequent "police action" in Korea, there was rapid consumption of the Mesabi's already depleted ores, and some economists were giving the Range only 20-25 years of life. In the 13-year period 1941-1953, more than 850 million tons of iron ore were shipped to steel mills, an amount almost equal to the total production during the preceding 30 years. Proven ore reserves dropped from 1.1 billion tons in 1940 to 8.3 million tons in 1954, the largest decrease being recorded in the famed direct shipping ores.

The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. The application of chemical thermodynamic theory to high temperature aqueous systems is discussed as a basis for the explanation of thermal precipitation. The derivation of high temperature potential/ pH diagrams is briefly outlined in order to show a temperature/pH relationship for hydrolytic precipitation, which is an effect that is caused simply by heating an aqueous solution. Various examples of thermal precipitation are given, with particular reference to separation of metal values from leach solutions. Metal sulphate solutions are shown to precipitate basic sulphates, hydrated sulphates , oxides, hydroxides, and oxydroxides of the metal depending largely on the pH, the concentration of metal ion, and the concentration of sulphate or bisulphate. The CuS04-H2S04-H20 system is treated in some detail, and the separation of copper from other metal ions is investigated. Other separations involving Fe, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Cr are considered. Other advantages of thermal precipitation, such as the formation of high purity, large particle size and easily filterable materials, are presented. The kinetics of thermal precipitation are also briefly examined.

Sulphur is always present in mineral coal of every variety. In the oxidized state it may exist as sulphuric acid in combination with a base. In the unoxidized state it exists in combination with iron as bisulphide of iron. It is also supposed by some chemists to exist in unknown combinations with the organic elements of the coal. This supposition requires the demonstration as a fact that certain coals yield more sulphur than what may exist in a free state, or what belongs to recognized combinations, not only with the accompanying iron but with other inorganic bases abundantly occurring in coals, but which unfortunately are very rarely estimated. This practically as well as theoretically important question it is at present impossible to decide, simply for want of available thorough ultimate coal analyses including the ash. Such analyses, at the best imperfect, are luborious and intricate, and therefore seldom made, the much simpler proximate analyses, so-called, being resorted to by most chemists for technical purposes, and commonly substituted for more scientific work even in the laboratories of government surveys. And it is unfortunate enough that few ultimate analyses are extended to the composition of the ash, much less to its relation to the original constitution of the coal. Sulphur chiefly occurs in most coals in the form of yellow pyrites (pyrite) and white pyrites (marcasite), both minerals, characterized by differences in crystalline form and in physical properties as well as in color, but having the same chemical composition (FeS2). No coal is entirely free from one or both of these dimorphous forms of bisulphide of iron. It may be disseminated through the mass so as to be invisible, in plates or scales between the laminæ of the coal, or in conspicuous segregations or nodules, sometimes of considerable dimensions. Coals greatly differ as to the proportion of sulphur which they contain. They also differ as to the relative proportion in which its several forms of combination occur. Such qualitative and qnantitative disparities arc scarcely, if at all, more marked in separate coal seams of a uniform type than in different parts of one and the same coal seam, whether it be considered locally as constituted of several
