IN THE first report1 disks of steel of known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive arges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was ogressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive

THIS paper discusses some fundamental metallurgical principles involved in production of sound cast bronze. In a previous paper the writers advanced the theory that "oxidation" in bronze castings is due to incipient shrinkage, and showed the effect of reducing melting atmospheres. In the present paper the effects of certain impurities and of actual oxidizing conditions are shown. The appendix deals with the appearance of various inclusions. For many years the prevailing opinion has been that unsoundness, dark colored fractures and other phenomena accompanying porosity and weakness in bronzes are due to oxidation. The actual troubles are caused by fissures of intercrystalline type, which are often mistaken for intercrystalline films. These weaken the metal and make it porous. Grave doubt regarding the accuracy of the oxidation theory appears when several research papers presented within the last 10 years are reviewed critically. In 1919, Comstock conducted metallographic researches, attempting to identify "oxides" in synthetically prepared metals. He found that oxides of tin, aluminum, zinc, etc. are different from the intercrystalline films (or cavities) to which porosity is due. Apparently he believed that these "oxide films" may be caused by volatile oxides of zinc or of phosphorus or by dissolved gases thrown out of solution during solidi-fication of the metal. In 1923, Woyski and Boeck3 definitely questioned the accuracy of the oxidation theory and indicated the danger from reducing atmospheres. They say that "oxidation, gassing and shrinkage may produce effects very similar."

INTRODUCTION Lake tapping is a method of blasting an intake into a body of water from below the natural water surface without first lowering that surface or installing a protective cofferdam around the tap hole. Lake taps are done by first excavating a tunnel almost to the water/rock contact and then blasting out the final protective rock plug at one time to allow water to suddenly inflow into the tunnel from the lake. This procedure can be done "dry" or "wet." In the dry method the tunnel is empty of water before the final plug blast while in the wet method it is partially filled with water. This paper describes a wet method lake tap as performed at Alaska Power Authority's Tyee Lake Hydroeletric Project in southeast Alaska. The Tyee Lake project is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Wrangell, Alaska, in a glacially formed valley called the Bradfield Canal. The project consists of a powerhouse located at sea level on the canal, a system of tunnels and shafts connecting the powerhouse to Tyee Lake at elevation 373 m (1225 ft), and an 129 km (80-mile) electrical transmission line leading from the powerhouse to Wrangell and then Petersburg, Alaska. Tyee Lake itself is a natural lake gouged out of the rock by glacial ice during the last ice age. The objective of the project was to tap into the lake and use the water as a source for power production. The techniques used for lake taps have been developed in Norway where conditions are favorable for their use in hydroelectric proj¬ects. Over 100 have been performed. In the United States the Tyee

Coal has been fighting a rear-guard action since the last World War. The battle against competitive fuels has been largely guerilla warfare with more sniping within the ranks than of organized opposition. Oil and natural gas are the fuels that over these twenty odd years have driven coal backward and out of many profitable markets. Now, somewhat timidly, the coal industry is trying a new weapon; namely, Research, or let us more properly say, Organized Research. Engineers have been designing this weapon for many years, supported by those interested in coal, including some coal producers. A part of this pioneer work has been Fundamental Research, the Ph.D. kind that is over the heads of most of us. Another part has been aimed at immediate objectives and realizable profits, the practical, man-in-the-street sort. That is Industrial Research. Enough has been accomplished to make a fair exhibit, but whether this new weapon will have sufficient fire power to rout the opposition, whether the industry will really go into production and use it, the next few years will tell. Need foR Coal Research To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous—rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privatelyfinanced research is just started in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 2 5 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200,-000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1 ,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.

Austenitic stainless alloys are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking which may occur under certain corrosion environments irrespective of their susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Test samples are described for investigating stress-corrosion susceptibility of alloys for industrial equipment. A laboratory test using a solution of magnesium chloride boiling at 309 F. was found to produce transgranular cracks in several alloys investigated and in types 347 and 316 stainless steel tubing a residual stress of the order of 10,000 psi. was observed to initiate cracking. The susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking as judged by the boiling magnesium chloride test indicates that alloys may be selected which will withstand a high stress in service Stressed specimens of stainless alloys included in a corrosion testing program will aid in determining the acceptibility of these fabricated alloys, when stressed, to the service conditions.

(2) Conveyors in the mill section of the concentrator plant. (3) Conveyors handling concentrate from the filter plant to the bedding plant, and from this plant to the smelter. (4) Conveyors handling flux and custom ore in the smelter crushing plant and to the bin at the bedding plant.

A pilot scale process has been developed to separate mercury, tin, silver, and copper from dental amalgam scrap. Laboratory research led to a process which was operated in 55 gallon drum sized reactors to treat 2000 Tr oz charges of scrap per day. This paper discusses the development work, presents a flowsheet and gives an indication of the equipment necessary to carry out the process on a commercial scale.

Tungsten has the highest melting point of all the known metals, namely 3350 C.; it is one of the hardest of the metals; it has the highest equiaxing or recrystallization temperature after strain hardening, of any pure metal known. It is particularly distinguished because, when composed of small equiaxed grains, it is extremely brittle and fragile at room temperature, and when possessing a fibrous structure it may be ductile and pliable at room temperature. The common ductile metals act in exactly the opposite manner in this respect. The present paper will include a brief note regarding the manufacture of wrought and ductile tungsten. The metallography of wrought and ductile tungsten in the various stages of manufacture will be considered more or less in detail. The general relationships between the properties of tungsten and other metals will also be considered. A discussion will be given explaining why fibrous tungsten is ductile at room temperature, even though past experience with other metals would indicate that it should be brittle. Finally, a brief note regarding some new fundamental metallographic propositions relating to all metals will be given. Manufacture of Wrought and Ductile Tungsten Up to about 10 years ago, it had not been possible to work tungsten mechanically. About the year 1908, Dr. William D. Coolidge, of the General Electrie Go., produced ductile tungsten from what was then supposed to be an inherently brittle metal and which, in fact, was inherently brittle in its normal state, that is, when composed of equiaxed grains. Since that time many products, chief among which are the filaments for electric incandescent lamps, have been made from wrought and ductile tungsten. Tungsten is produced chiefly from the minerals wolframite and scheelite.1-8 The ores may be reduced in many ways. For example, the ore may be fused with alkali carbonates and the fusion dissolved in water; sodium tungstate is formed, which is soluble in water. This

THE following paper has been prepared to meet a demand for a concise review of the California oil industry. It is based largely upon information secured during the course of the senior, author's professional activities, and upon data obtained during the course of investigations for the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Considerable information has been obtained from other sources, and to those who by publication or otherwise have contributed, the writers extend their thanks. GENERAL STATEMENT In 1912 the United States produced 63.25 per cent. of the world's production of petroleum, Russia, its nearest competitor, yielding only . about 19 per cent. The production in 1912 reached 222,113,218 barrels (or 29,615,096 metric tons), compared with 220,449,391 barrels in 1911. The average price per barrel in 1912 was nearly 74 c., as against nearly 61 c. in 1911. The total value, therefore, increased 22.20 per cent., or $163,802,334 above the value for the previous year. These figures of production include pipe-line runs, independent railroad shipments, oil piped direct to refineries, and the crude oil consumed as fuel in oil production. The production does not include oil in storage in the field which has not been sold.

The subject of this chapter is the formulation of analytical methods that may aid in the rational design and determination of the stability of engineering structures in competent brittle rock materials. By an engineering structure in rock, we mean any (1) excavated sub- surface opening, (2) open surface structure, or (3) system of openings in rock that is virtually self-supporting-that is, not requiring artificial systems to carry structural stresses.

IN the present state of public affairs, the reviewer turns from his traditional role of recording the progress made in research during the year and views the whole situation in which he finds himself in direct relation to the immediate needs of the nation. The slow progress of research year by year fades into comparative insignificance. The sum total of that research in all the years which have past becomes of importance only in direct relation to the extent to which we have translated or can immediately translate it into in¬dustrial production. For in a wartime economy immediacy is of paramount importance. The outcome of the war is being determined by our ability to pro¬duce and fabricate the metals and alloys which we require for its prosecution. Aside from iron and steel which lie outside the limits of this review, the most important of the nonferrous metals now needed in wartime production are aluminum, magnesium, nickel, chromium, and manganese. Some remarks on their production and fabrication follow.

The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

IRON KING mine, producing gold-silver-lead-zinc ore, is 10 miles east of Prescott, Ariz. At present the 1806 level is being developed. The echelon pattern of ore deposit continues at depth but is less pronounced, and the orebody is now more or less continuous over 2600 ft of strike length. with widths 5 ft to as high as 26 ft where overlapping of lenses occurs in one section of the mine. Better continuity of ore at depth has encouraged systematic mining and improved plant facilities to offset higher operating costs. With favorable persistence of ore at depth. the three-compartment No. 6 hoisting shaft appeared inadequate to handle increased tonnage from greater depths, and in 1952, a four-compartment steel and concrete shaft was started. This is now at a depth of 1906 ft, and shaft pockets and loading cartridges are being installed on the 1806 level. Ore from the new shaft, hoisted in 51/2 -ton Jeto bottom dump skips, is dumped into a 500-ton shaft bin, from which it is fed to a 16x30-in. gyratory crusher and conveyed 415 ft through an undersurface concrete gallery to the secondary crusher and conveying system supplying the 900-ton mill. Lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates are floated, and the flotation tailings are cyanided after desliming. Waste from the new shaft is dumped into a 250-ton surge bin, fed from this bin to a 24-in. conveyor, and discharged into the glory hole above the block cave. The new shaft is served by a double-drum 400-hp hoist used for ore and waste; the No. 6 shaft conveys men and material To secure a cheap source of waste fill for stoping operations, a block cave area was undercut In the hanging wall near the north end of the mine above the 600 level. Waste from the block cave is drawn from any of three large drawpoints on the 600 level, and a series of hanging wall transfer raises with controls and bypasses on each level provide a fast low-cost material for fill. The block cave is worked vertically through to surface in the form of a steep-sided hole 350x250 ft and several hundred feet deep, the sides of which cave and provide fill material without any blasting. Fill is a mixture of caliche-cemented surface gravel and small particles of hanging wall schist. Level Development: An orebody 300 times as long as it is wide requires a lot of development work. Former practice consisted of driving a haulage drift about 30 ft from the ore in an andesitic footwall, a drift on the ore, and crosscuts from the haulage drift at 100-ft intervals. Crosscuts are about 90 ft long. At present, only the odd numbered levels are so developed, and on the even numbered levels only the haulage drift and crosscuts are driven. Little or no timber is used for this development. This change resulted in 20 pct reduction of development costs and 50 pet reduction of square set stoping required for removal of floor pillars. TUBES may be produced by a large number of forming processes, the most common of which will be discussed analytically in this paper. In no case will the stress analysis for any given tube producing process be derived formally for where such analyses are available, they may be referred to readily. Rather, emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the theory of the different processes, few of which are developed to a state that will allow rigorous mathematical analyses, in an attempt to give a rational description of the effects of the different variables involved in each method. Tube producing methods can be divided into two groups: Those used to form shells, and those used to further work these shells into a shape more suitable for their final use. Among the first group are included roll piercing, extrusion and cupping for seamless shells, and bending with welding for welded tubes. The re-forming processes include sinking, drawing with a plug, and drawing with a rod. Only the plastic forming operations will be discussed here; other forming processes such as casting shells will not be considered. PRODUCTION OF SHELLS Shells for Seamless Tubing Piercing: The extremely important process of forming an axial hole in a billet by oblique rolling never has been analyzed satisfactorily, although a certain amount of experimental work relating to this process has been conducted. There are a number of factors that make piercing difficult to analyze; one of these is the fact that piercing is not a problem in plasticity, but one in fracturing, and the laws of fracturing are even less well understood than those of plasticity. If, however, it is assumed that fracturing occurs on a surface as a result of tensile stresses acting normal to this surface, piercing can be analyzed qualitatively by examining the stresses established in the oblique rolling process. To determine the origin of the tensile stresses that are thought to effect piercing, it will be necessary to know the angular relationships between the maximum stresses that are established in piercing. These angles quite frequently can be determined in a plastic deformation process by an examination of the deformed product. For example, consider the stresses established when a tensile test is conducted on a rectangular cross-sectional specimen of pearlitic steel. When stretched, this material first flows plastically, exhibiting the well-known yield jog on a stress-strain curve. The formation of the slip areas that give rise to the yield jog can be detected during the straining, since these flowed areas cause depressions on the specimen surfaces which can be seen if the surfaces are polished highly. The plastically strained areas also can be found after the specimen has been stretched to a strain not exceeding the yield jog, by sectioning the test piece and. etching these sections with Fry's etch. THIS investigation was carried on by means of models and the applica-tion of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimensions. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in- bed B, a 3/8-in, bed C and two 1/8 -in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at ±2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back 1/4 in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious ,reasons all are not presented.
