In predicting the sweepout pattern efficiency to be expected in a .secondary recovery operation, the reservoir engineer is often confronted with a situation in which part of the producing formation lies between the last row of wells and the reservoir boundary. To date, there has been little or no reference in the literalure to sweepout pattern efficiencies in such areas. This paper presents the results, of a laboratory study in which the area contacted around the edge of a reservoir injected in a five-spot pattern was determined. The X-ray shadowgraph technique was used in this study. It was found that surprisingly large portions of the reservoir area lying outside the well network are conracted by the injected fluid before, abndonment conditions are reached. In fact, it can he said that at least 00 per cent of the circa lying outside the last row of wells and within a distance of one well spacing of these wells will ultimately be contacted by the injected fluid in the case of most water floods. Frorn the results given in this paper, it is possible to estitilate not only the extent to which encroachment into these areas will occur but also the injection volume necessary to produce the wells to abnndonment conditions. INTRODUCTION While considerable work has hern done in recent years1.?.'.''.' evaluating the fraction of the reservoir contacted as a function of the mobility ratio for several different well patterns, there has been practically no mention of what happens to the oil in that portion of the reservoir which lies between the last row of wells and the reservoir boundary. In fact, the assumption is generally made that little or no recovery can he expected From this area. This assumption is incorrect and in many cases will lead to seriouq errors in calculating reservoir performance. The fraction of the area outside the regular well pattern contacted in a five-spot injection system has been studied using the X-ray technique5 to follow the progress of actual floods in porous models of reservoir elemental areas. In this paper, the method for carrying out such a study and the results showing the fraction of the area in question swept as a function of mobility ratio and the produced fluids are presented. THE REPRESENTATION OF A RESERVOIR BY ITS ELEMENTAL AREAS She portion of the reservoir lying between the edge of a reservoir and a line connecting the outermost wells may be roughly designated as the part of the reservoir outside the regular well pattern. An example of such an area is shown as the shaded portion in Fig. 1. Spots Goblenski fluffed up his pork chop sideburns, checked the angle of his wide brim Stetson and ambled off the airplane. The pert Braniff hostess stood smartly at the door. "Goodbye now, take care," she said in the special airline stewardess voice superimposed on a Texas drawl. Spots smirked, "You betcha, Peaches, you too." It was a crystal clear, sunny day which New York can have at any season of the year (but rarely gets credit for) and being in high spirits Spots did not mind being captured by a cab driver. That is the cab driver brushed aside all other conversation to give a continuous colorful commentary on New York politics, revealing in the process that only the very wealthy and cab drivers share the same political views in that city. After installing himself in the fading opulence of the Hotel Roosevelt, he finished the day with a steak dinner with baked potato under sour cream and hearts of lettuce salad with Roquefort dressing at the Black Angus restaurant. The next morning he had an appointment with Hemphill, Frye and Louderdock. The offices of this prestigious firm of management consultants are high in the Pan Am Building. He was courteously received by a lacquered receptionist and was soon escorted into the presence of Mr. John Smith. "Ah, Mr. Goblenski; Spots, isn't it? Hope you had a good flight. Lovely weather we are having. Just make yourself comfortable over there, Spots." Smith seemed cordial and Spots slipped comfortably into the interview. He had always thought that management consultants were evolved from the "efficiency experts" made famous by the radio team, Amos and Andy. He associated the modern version with computers, PERT and other systems approaches. He was surprised that one of these firms was apparently acting as an employment agency. "Of course" continued Smith, "in evaluation of basic criteria of performance moduli, the human element enters, Spots, and that brings us to you." Spots sat up and focused his attention.

Operations in the Texas Gulf Coast during the past year have resulted in the discovery of a number of new fields arid the extension of a few of the older fields, both by deeper drilling and by lateral development. Twenty-six new oil and gas-producing areas and discovery of oil or gas in three subsequently abandoned wells have been recorded for a total of 29 new fields of varying importance. Producing areas at Conroe, Manvel, Greta, Pierce Junction, Hastings, Dirks, Thompson, Batson, Mykawa, Tomball, Raccoon Bend, Samfordyce arid Saxct have been increased. Primary geologic studies followed by geophysical mapping or straight geophysical prospects have been responsible for the more important discoveries. These methods have further proved themselves an aid to limiting wildcatting to the more prospective areas and as the chief means to discover reserves in the future. Production for 1935 totaled 69,560,720 bbl. as compared with 60,850,-360 bbl. for 1934. Strict proration has been in force throughout the discovery of more oil than has been produced. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. Hence, the discussion of these discoveries will be limited. Bee County.—Three new gas fields were added during the year: Beeville, discovered by G. M. By 1950 or soon thereafter facilities will be available in foreign countries for the production, transportation, and refining of about 4,305,000 bbl per day of crude oil—a volume not far short of current United States output. This is indicated by announced plans for foreign expansion, - some of the work being already under way. The projected potential production is about 1,500,000 bbl per day or 50 pct above the record-setting foreign production of 2,810,000 bbl daily in 1946. The scheduled new foreign facilities are equivalent to almost one third of the present facilities of the United States. Fears that so much additional foreign oil may flood world markets and disrupt the domestic industry of the United States are not justified. The projected foreign expansion apparently has been planned on a sound business basis, with careful consideration of the world's actual need for all the projected additional production. Materially increased world demand for petroleum promises to absorb the increased supplies without ill effect upon the domestic industry. Even by applying conservative estimates of both foreign and domestic demand, it is indicated that world requirements can absorb the projected larger foreign output and still permit continued increase in United States production. World demand would have to increase only 5.7 pct per year in the 1947 to 1950 period to absorb the prospective supply. Such an increase may be conservatively projected, in view of past and current trends. Introduction Recent announcements of plans for expanding petroleum facilities in the Middle East and Venezuela foreshadow an unusually sharp increase in foreign production in the immediate future. Therefore, the next few years will bring far-reaching changes in world petroleum affairs, with foreign petroleum production and other activities assuming much greater importance than formerly. Tabulation of figures on development already under way or planned indicates that in the next several years facilities will be available for producing, transporting and refining twice the prewar production of foreign fields and about 50 pct or nearly 1,500,000 bbl a day above their record-level output of 1946. To say that foreign fields may be producing such an enlarged quantity by 1950 is, of course, a statement of great significance to everyone connected .with the oil industry and especially to those of the American petroleum industry. A production of 1,500,000 bbl daily is equal to the combined yield of the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico. This means that within the next several years foreign petroleum facilities will undergo a new expansion equivalent to one third of the present facilities of the United States. To think of such an expansion in foreign production is to raise at this meeting the question of what this prospective foreign development means for the United States, the American petroleum industry in general, and the American engineer and technologist in particular. MCCARTHY At a meeting of the members of Columbia Section, which was held in the Davenport hotel, Spokane, Wash., Jan. 31, 1919, at noon, there were present' about twenty members and guests. The chairman being absent, Mr. Frederick Keffer presided. The Secretary announced the personnel of the executive committee of the section, which is: J. C. Hass, Spokane, Chairman; W. J. Hall, Wallace, Ida., Vice-chairman; S. S. Fowler, Riondel, B. C., Past Chairman; L. K. Armstrong, Spokane, Secretary-Treasurer; R. M. Betts, Cornucopia, Oregon. It was stated that the geological survey and report on Stevens Co., Wash., has been completed and will be printed soon. The geologic survey of Colville Indian reservation, by J. T. Pardee, U. S. G. S., has been published as Bulletin No. 677 and is available for distribution, The Miner's Almanac, Miners Circular No. 24, U. S. Bureau of Mines. is also available upon request. There was considerable discussion on the program for meetings during the year. It was informally agreed that, if agreeable to Coeur d' Alene members, that one meeting should be held in that district, preferably at the time of the annual visit of Institute officials. It was also proposed to hold at least one open-air meeting in Spokane with suitable program. The activities of other sections were noted with favorable comment. In this connection there was much general discussion on the subject of closer relations between the national engineering societies. It was agreed that cooperation was desirable and imperative if the greatest measure of value be realized from the profession. It was not the sense of the members, however, that complete amalgamation is desirable. This expression of local sentiment is to be presented to the Institute

The most important quantitative method in seismic prospecting by refraction shooting is the method of profiles. A profile is established by firing a series of charges at various points along a straight line which terminates at the seismograph. The same data are obtained by repeatedly firing charges at one place and recording at a series of stations along the line of the profile. The quantities which are measured are the distance x from each firing position to the seismograph and the time t required for the first disturbance from each explosion to travel to the seismograph. These data are used in plotting the familiar time-distance graph. The only time-distance graphs that will be considered here are those obtained in localities where the velocity of propagation depends solely on the depth beneath the surface; that is, where there is no slope in the subsurface. The essential calculation to be made from such a time-distance graph is the determination of P(x), the maximum depth of penetration of a disturbance coming to the seismograph from a firing point at the distance x from the instrument. If the time-distance graph consists of a series of straight lines, as is often the case, the penetration P(x) can be calculated by means of formulas which appear in almost every description of seismic prospecting.' Until the present, however, the only formula that has been available for calculating P(x) for time-distance graphs which are smooth curves is one which requires an arbitrary assumption regarding the law of velocity increase with depth.2 The practice in these cases has been to approximate the curve by means of a number of straight lines and then to apply the ordinary straight-line formulas. This method clearly can yield accurate results only when a sufficiently large number of straight lines is used. The labor of computation increases rapidly when the number of lines is increased, so too few lines often are used. Further than that, there is a strong tendency to overlook the approximate nature

INTRODUCTION In 1975 278x10 3 tonnes of zinc was consumed in the United Kingdom, of which 69.3x10 3 tonnes was obtained from secondary sources. Of this secondary zinc 37.7x10 3 tonnes was used in brass making, the remainder was used in non metallic applications - eg oxides and salts. Many forms of zinc-bearing wastes arise, for example as galvaniser's drosses and residues, fumes from ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical processes, and filter cakes from rayon manufacture and metal finishing. In the case of zinc-bearing dusts and fumes, the quantities available for recycle are at present restricted by the failure to collect them efficiently, hut environmental factors are leading to improvements in gas cleaning, with the result that quantities collected will increase and then exceed those required for the production of chemicals, so that some dusts may either have to be dumped or processed to metal. The recovery of zinc from steelmaking dusts is practised in W. Germany (1) and Japan (2) employing processes based on reduction in rotary kilns in order to produce sponge iron and a zinc- rich oxide suitable for feeding to the zinc-lead blast furnace. Although the zinc-lead blast furnace is the only zinc-making process used in the UK, no similar treatment of steelmaking dusts is carried out, a pilot scheme was tested by the British Steel Corporation, but development was abandoned for economic reasons. It appears to be cheaper to pelletise suitable dusts and export them for treatment elsewhere.

IN 1857 the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, whose main line extended from Philadelphia to Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with branches into the coal regions of Schuylkill County, made a contract with the Fairmount Rolling Mill, at Philadelphia, for the rerolling of some four thousand tons of iron rails. The essential features of the agreement were that the old rails should be piled with puddled iron and rolled into flats for the rail pile, which latter was to be of a section seven inches square, and after being heated, and reduced, by rolling, to a bloom of a section about five inches by six inches, was to be reheated, before being finished into the rail of the T pattern, four inches high, weighing sixty-four pounds per yard. Great care was exercised in the execution of this contract, and the rails being distributed over all parts of the road, gave general satis¬faction by their excellent wear. Five years afterward, the principal proprietor and manager of the Fairmount Rolling Mill was elected President of the Reading Railroad, and very many of the rails made under his supervision were still in use in the tracks of the company, of which he had just assumed the management. His first efforts were, therefore, directed to the procuring of more rails of the same quality wherewith to replace those worn out. Here he encountered some trouble, makers refusing to bid because of the details in the specification, the required reheating being the objectionable feature, for which it was generally intimated they would not be sufficiently remunerated for the increased labor, extra coal consumed, and the changes necessary from the established methods of working. Most of the new rails were, therefore, bought, and the old rails rerolled without regard to any particulars as to the manner of piling, heating, etc., each manufacturer furnishing what he deemed the best article possible for the money. Book Review MEXICO UNDER CARRANZA. By Thomas E. Gibbon, Los Angeles, California. Doubleday Page and Co., New York, 1919, 270 pp., 711/2 X 5 in. $1.50. A vivid, accurate, convincing summing up of the Mexican problem as it confronts us today, devoid of sensationalism or bigotry. A compelling narrative of the relations of the Carranza Government and our own from Oct. 15, 1915, when it was recognized as the de facto government of Mexico, to the present time. It shows the absolute lack of promises kept or lived up to either with its own people or the United States. This is not done by invective or the indiscriminate use of adjectives but by quoting from the instruments on record on both sides of the case. The driving of the Red Cross out of Mexico, which condemned many of the native peons to starvation, and the interference with the Pershing Punitive Expedition are merely mentioned, but the crying crime against the Mexican people, who have sunk to unbelievable depths of misery obscured, but not exceeded, by the sufferings in Europe, is held up in a clarified light. Two illuminating chapters are devoted to the character and treatment of foreign investments in Mexico, Which are a complete refutation of the common statement that Mexico has been exploited remorselessly by the foreign investor. The conces-sions given by Diaz in the days of his regime most condemned are nowise as large nor the land grants as extensive nor the title so absolute as those granted to the railroad builders of our own transcontinental systems and other of our nationally subsidized works. This is not left to further argument but is settled by quoting the various official instruments and not at all in a tedious way. The author's concluding chapter is a picture of the Mexican people from Aztec times, when they had reached a civilization which gave them a better calendar than the Roman Empire ever had until modern times, to their present unhappy and pitiful condition. He concludes, basing his findings on parallel historical downfalls of a once proud people, that present conditions are the natural result of the absolute domination of an alien minority. He grants, of course, that there are many estimable Latin-Mexicans of integrity, ability and charm, but maintains that the dominant minority has continually degraded in fulfillment of the sociological law that the sure revenge of the servile class is found in the corruption of the master class. The book is replete with historical and literary allusions which, added to the pleasing style of the accomplished author, make fascinating the account of one of the world's great tragedies. Mr. Gibbon is a lawyer who has spent much time in Mexico and shows an understanding of the native people not shared by all writers on the Mexican problem. North Central Texas has recently become a center of interest for the oil men of America. The bringing in of the McClosky well at Ranger, Eastland County, and the shallow pool at Brownwood, Brown County, in 1917, has stimulated interest in this area to fever pitch. Oil men from all over the United States are now investing there. The area of present interest is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 1). The money spent in leases runs into millions of dollars. It is no exaggeration to say that a strip of country 200 miles (321 km.) long and 125 miles (201 km.) wide, comprising some 15,000,000 acres (6,070,310 ha.), has been leased practically solid at a cost for rentals and bonuses of at least $1 per acre. The test holes contracted for will certainly number 400, at a cost of at least $5,000,000. From what has been done in the past six months, $20,000,000 at least will be spent. To pay returns on this amount of money, new production to the extent of at least 12,000,000 bbl. must be obtained. At present, the production from new fields will not average over 5000 bbl. per day; three wells at Ranger are producing 3000 bbl.; 250 wells at Brownwood produce 1000 bbl.; and the Gray well, Coleman County, is as yet an unknown factor. However, at Ranger there is every indication of developing a good pool covering from 1500 to 2000 acres (607 to 809 ha.), more or less, but the wells are deep, 3400 to 3800 ft. (1036 to 1158 m.), and cost $35,000 to $40,000 to drill. Large wells are necessary to pay for such expensive holes. As new wells are drilled, the gas pressure will be lowered rapidly, and large production need not be expected. For those oil men who expect a second Cushing or an Eldorado, Ranger holds little of promise. At Brownwood, Brown County, there are some 250 shallow wells (depths from 200 to 350 ft.) averaging 4 to 7 bbl. per day. There is a chance of an extensive producing area for these shallow sands to the southwest, and the opening of several thousand acres of shallow oil territory, and also some promise of deeper oil horizons in the Ranger horizon, but probably all under 2500 ft. At present, the lease brokers and speculators, and only a handful of oil men, have made any money. More fields must be developed, and it is more particularly with these possibilities that this paper deals. Lack of water for drilling purposes has undoubtedly held back development so far this year; this part of Texas has had a drouth for two years and there is an actual scarcity of water. THIS paper reports the results of the use of salt in some research work carried on during the past 3 years at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau of Mines, which is quartered in the University of Utah, whose Metallurgical Research Department cooperates with the Bureau. Only the work involving the use of salt is described. The authors wish equal credit given to J. F. Cullen, C. L. Larson, C. Y. Proutz, C. E. Sims, H. C. Neeld, R. W. Johnson, F. G. Moses, N. C. Christensen, and G. H. Wigton, who have all in some way contributed toward the success of this work. Lead Metallturgy Popularly Supposed to be Without Problems In bead metallurgy it is difficult at first to find metallurgical problems, as the prevailing conception has been that bead is so easily concentrated in its various ores and so easily reduced to its metallic form that the only progress possible is that involved in cheapening methods of mining and of reduction. Most of the problems usually considered are of minor nature and do not involve radical metallurgical changes. During the 3 years of work of the Salt Lake Station, the following classification of problems in the metallurgy of bend has been made: Those involving Oxidized Ores. 1. Ores containing only bead. s. The coal concentrates studied contained clay slimes which would not flocculate on the addition of a polymer flocculent alone. The mechanism of the flocculation process is interpreted on the basis of the flocculation of lyophobic colloids. The filtration rate characteristics are shown to deviate slightly from certain basic filtration equations. Cake moisture was shown to decrease with cake drying time and vacuum, and increase with cake thickness. Filtration is a commonly accepted method of dewa-tering the fine coal concentrates produced in coal cleaning operations. Dewatering of these concentrates, using drum or disc vacuum filters, usually presents few technical difficulties and will result in the production of a filter cake containing some 20 to 25 pct moisture. In many coal cleaning operations it is common practice to add flocculants to the coal concentrates prior to filtration to increase the filtration rate. The mechanism whereby flocculation increases filtration rate has been summarized by Gaudin,4 while Geer, et a15 have compared the effectiveness of starch and synthetic flocculants as filter aids for a variety of coal concentrates. Coal concentrates, containing appreciable quantities of expanding lattice clays of the montmorillonite-illite group, sometimes prove impossible to filter without flocculation of the pulp prior to filtration. The fine coal concentrates produced at the Newcastle washery of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. fall into this group. Coals mined in this district contain appreciable quantities of expanding lattice clays which break down in the washery circuit waters and, by processes of mechanical inclusion, contaminate the coal concentrate thickener feed. Despite the classifying action of this thickener, the underflow which is pumped to the filters contains sufficient clay slimes to render filtration of the unflocculated pulp impossible. Filtration leaf and plant tests were carried out to develop effective and economic flocculant combinations and to determine the filtration characteristics of the flocculated coal concentrates. The determination, by leaf testing, of the filtration characteristics, and the analysis of these characteristics in the light of the equations of Brown2 resulted in the successful trial operation of the filters in the Newcastle washq. Although the filtration characteristics are not entirely in agreement with the theoretical treatment of Brown, the equations developed made it possible to predict, from leaf tests, the effect in the plant filters of pulp density, form vacuum, and form time on filtration rate and filtrate volume. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The sample used for leaf testing was the coal concentrate thickener underflow, which in plant operations would form the feed to the two 12-disk Dorr-Oliver filters. The feed to the coal concentrate thickener comprises the undersize produced by dewatering the Diester table concentrate on 5-mm dewatering screens and the overflow produced by cycloning of the froth flotation concentrate. In order properly to evaluate the data related to geomagnetic surveys, it is highly desirable to have all the available information concerning the magnetic properties of the involved media. This is true of surface as well as subsurface formations and becomes of increasing importance as advancement in instrumental and interpretative technique permits the analysis of relatively slight magnetic reflections of buried masses. Since the magnitude and areal distribution of the usually complex resultant magnetic field at the surface of the earth is a function of the susceptibility1 of the involved matter, it necessarily follows that susceptibility determinations will afford valuable data for geophysical correlation. The present method was developed to meet the need for routine analysis of specimens in the geomagnetic laboratory where it was felt that general utility, ruggedness, ease of manipulation and reproducibility of results were of greater importance than extreme sensitivity. An analysis of the conditiom fm the dendrite-eutec-tic transition is presented which takes into account a temperature gradient. The composition and temperature in the liquid ahead of a eutectic interface growing at a particular velocity are used to determine whether dendrites can grow faster than the eutectic interface in the liquid which exists ahead of it. If the dendrites grow faster, then a mixed structure with dendrites growing ahead of the eutectic interface is expected. If the dendrites do not grow faster, then only eutectic will be present. The analysis is presented for Sn-Pb system, for which sufficient experimental data to make the analysis are available. The transition from eutectic to dendrites-plus-eutectic derived by this analysis is in good agreement with the recent experimental observations of Mollard and Flemings on Sn-Pb alloys. In alloys which grow with a lamellar eutectic structure, the lamellar structure can be grown over some range of compositions close to the eutectic composition. When the composition is too far from the eutectic composition, dendrites of one or another of the primary phases grow ahead of the eutectic interface, producing a microstructure consisting of "primary phase" interspersed with a lamellar eutectic. Hunt and Jackson' have recently predicted the range of compositions over which the eutectic phase should grow in Sn-Pb alloys, and the composition-growth rate dependence of the transition from eutectic to dendrites-plus-eutectic. This prediction was based on work on organic eutectics. The model on which the prediction was based assumed that there was no temperature gradient in the system, a condition approximately satisfied in the study of organic eutectics2-5 but not in the growth of metallic alloys. Mollard and Flemings6,7 have recently reported experimental results for Sn-Pb alloys in which they have located the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth. The experiments were performed using large temperature gradients (65 to 515 deg per cm), so that the assumption of zero gradient on which the predictions of Hunt and Jackson' were based does not apply. It is not surprising therefore that the predictions' were not born out by the experiments.7 In the present work, a modification of the model used by Hunt and Jackson is presented which takes into account the temperature gradient. The modified form of the theory predicts the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth in terms of the composition, growth rate, and temperature gradient. Good agreement with the experimental data of Mollard and Flemings7 is obtained. THE HUNT-JACKSON MODEL The model used by Hunt and Jackson' to predict the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth was based on the assumption that dendrites grow ahead of a eutectic interface only if they grow faster than the eutectic interface. Analytic expressions for the growth rate of dendrites and the eutectic in Sn-Pb alloys were obtained by fitting experimental data with equations whose form was indicated by theory.

Rigorous equations for calculating subsurface pres.tures in flowing and static gas wells, and pressures along horizontal pipelines are presented in this paper. These general equations, based on the mechanical encrgy balance, contain no assumptions regarding temperature and can be used with either straight-line or curved temperature gradients. The friction factors recommended in this report are based on an absolute roughness of 0.0006 in. Flow is always considered to he turbulent. Although these general flow equations are solved by numerical means, the methods are as convenient as many of those used today to calculate pressures in gas wells and pipelines. These numerical methods are illustrated for flowing and static columns of gas in wells and for flow in pipelines. The authors believe that the use of these methods will result in more accurately calculated pressures in gas wells and pipelines and that [he methods are more flexible than any in use at the present time. Also, the methods are easily adaptable to automatic computers. INTRODUCTION The problem of calculating subsurface pressures in gas wells and along flowing pipelines has been studied by many investigators with the results that two widely-used methods have been presented in technical literature. One approximates conditions in a gas well or pipeline by assuming that temperature and compressi- bility are constants tor the entire gas column. The other method assumes that temperature is constant at some average value but permits compressibility to vary with pressure at the constant temperature. While these approximations may be justified for relatively shallow and low-pressure wells, they become more and more unrealistic as the calculations are applied to the deeper high-pressure wells. In wells or pipelines where there is an appreciable change in temperature between the inlet and outlet ends of the flow string, it is equally as important to consider the change in compressibility with temperature as it is to consider the change with pressure. Consequently, the methods presented in this paper were developed to provide a workable procedure for calculating pressures in gas wells and pipelines which makes no assumptions regarding either temperature or compressibility. The friction factors recommended for use with the equations were the result of study of published literature and extensive experimental work with gas wells. The F,. values in Appendix IV which contain the friction factor are equivalent to an absolute roughness of 0.0006 in. as calculated by the Nikuradse equation. The absolute roughness of 0.0006 in. was previously published by Cullender and Binckley2 for gas wells; it is in agreement with 0.00065 in. of Smith, Dewees, and Williams1 for gas wells and 0.00065 in. of Baker and Swerdloff4 for pipelines; it is in reasonable agreement with 0.0007 in. reported by the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Assn.5 for large transmission lines. However, any type of friction factors may be used in the equations by a change in the F, values in Appendix [V].

The Field Meeting of the Chicago Section proved to be the most enjoyable meeting ever held by the Section. It took the form of a visit to the Northern Indiana Industrial District where the day was spent inspecting metallurgical plants in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago and in amusement at the Hammond Country Club. The weather was perfect and about 50 members and ladies attended the meeting. An inspection of the plant of the Inland Steel Co. occupied the morning. The plant was decorated in honor of the occasion and the company provided attractive souvenirs. It was noticed here that many of the ladies displayed an interest in the inspection and an understanding of the processes that would not have shamed professional metallurgists. While the members of the Section seemed to be most interested in the by-product coke ovens and the by-product recovery plant, the ladies enjoyed especially watching the snake-like antics of the red-hot rods in the wire mill. Leaving the steel plant, the Section enjoyed a ride through the district by automobile and arrived at the Hammond Country Club in time for lunch. In the afternoon some of the members inspected the plant of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, while the rest spent the time at the Country Club in golf, tennis, trap shooting, bridge and other amusements. During the dinner at the Hammond Country Club an informally organized male quartette led the singing in real college boy style. In the evening, E. E. Billow talked on the use of oil burners in metallurgical furnaces, Mr. MacDowell told of the present status of the Potash Industry and the Secretary told of some of the happenings at the Arizona Meeting. MANY of the properties of metals and alloys are structure dependent. Not the least of these is the grain structure. For example, in producing alloy bonds between silicon or germanium and gold-alloy foil at temperatures above their eutectics (which are, respectively, at 370" and 356°C) but below the melting points of the individual constituents, it was found that wetting was more complete with a fine-grain structure than with a coarse-grain structure. In cases where the assemblies were held together for long periods of time at elevated temperatures, wetting was not as critically dependent on the grain structure as was the case for shorter periods of time. When liquid phase forms, it first forms in the grain boundaries due to the fact that most of the impurities are concentrated at the grain boundaries and that most impurities tend to lower the melting point of the gold alloy somewhat. In addition, grain boundaries are at high-surface free-energy levels and are thus in a more favorable condition to initiate good wetting. A fine-grain structure will have more grain boundaries per unit area than coarse-grain structure thereby making wetting somewhat easier. To make the grain structure of an alloy sys- tem visible, a satisfactory method for differentiating between the different grains of which the system is composed must be employed. For the alloy bonding system previously described, the grain structure on the foil surface is of primary interest. Conventionally used etchants for the gold-alloy system will not adequately delineate grain boundaries in their structures. For this reason an alternate method is proposed for those cases where such a determination is necessary. Foil between 0.0005 and 0.005 in. thick has been used in this determination. The equipment used in this investigation was described in a previous publication.' Essentially, it employs a resistance-type filament which can be heated up very rapidly and cooled very rapidly. A thin refractory material is placed on top of the heating element. This refractory material may be molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, or even ceramic but its thickness should be less than 0.010 in. to minimize the temperature gradient across it. The gold-alloy foil is placed on top of this refractory material. The temperature of the heating filament is raised to 900°C and cooled down to below 100°C in 5 to 10 sec. During this cycle, the foil can be observed to plastically deform due to its own weight. With no further chemical etching, this assembly is then viewed under a standard metallurgical microscope and the grain size measured. Fig. 1 is a Au-1 pct Sb alloy at 400X magnification and Fig. 2 is a Au-1 pct Ga alloy at 130X. This technique has proved to be an adequate means for controlling processing conditions in producing large quantities of gold alloy foil.
