Observations were made of the isothermal transformation and quench and reheat transformation characteristics of binary titanium alloys containing nominally 6 wt pct and 10 wt pct Mn at temperatures of 700°, 600°, 500°, and 400°C. A large change in electrical resistivity attends the beta to alpha transformation in these alloys. The correlation between the resistivity and microstructure provides a very sensitive means of following the transformation. IN a recent paper, Wyatt' determined the electrical resistivity of several grades of unalloyed titanium metal as a function of temperature. In addition to the expected discontinuity accompanying the a-B transformation, it was shown that s-Ti has a much larger temperature coefficient of resistance than 8. The result would be a very large change in resistivity attending ß?a: transformation if it were possible to retain the ß structure at room temperature in pure titanium. From these data, it was reasoned that this very large resistance change should accompany the decomposition of the ß phase in alloys in which the ß phase can be retained by quenching to room temperature from the ß field. This effect is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. Binary Ti-Mn alloys containing more than 5 wt pct Mn can be quenched to retain ß from the ß field. While the ß phase would be expected to transform in these alloys to a + TiMn via a eutectoid reaction,' it has been observed that the eutectoid decomposition does not occur readily in hypoeutectoid alloys, but rather the decomposition of the ß occurs by rejection of proeutectoid a only." Thus, the resistivity should show a marked decrease, as the a: phase is rejected from ß and a study of the resistivity of solution treated and isothermally transformed or quenched and reheated alloys should provide an excellent means of establishing the transformation kinetics of these alloys at various temperatures. The usual metallographic method of determining the transformation temperature-time characteristics of alloys of this type is very satisfactory for deter- mining the time required to initiate the rejection of the a phase at temperatures relatively close to the ß/a: + ß boundary when the rejected a is coarse, and a typical Widmanstaetten structure is produced. The metallographic method is less satisfactory for this purpose at lower temperatures where a fine nodular decomposition product is observed and is very unsatisfactory for the determination of the time required to complete the transformation at any temperature. Accordingly, specimens were prepared for resistivity measurements in order to determine the transformation characteristics of the alloys.

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

Beam-columns with continuous or discontinuous transverse and angular loads and elastic restraints are represented mathematically in a manner corresponding to finite-element mechanical models. Solutions for linearly elastic cases are accomplished by direct recursion-equation elimination of unknowns, and for cases involving nonlinear loads and supports, by repeated trial-and-adjustment of complete elastic-type solutions. Five practical applications are presented by which various capabilities of the general method are illustrated. The examples include simulation of a pipeline launching and the bending and collapse of a conductor pipe in deep-water drilling operations. INTRODUCTION The diversified and complex operations being conducted in support of the production of offshore oil have produced a wide variety of new problems in structural mechanics. Many of these problems cannot be solved by conventional analytical or experimental approaches and have therefore stimulated inquiry into new methods of solution. It is the purpose of this paper to give a brief description of an analytical method for solving nonlinear beam-column problems and to illustrate the generality of the method by applying it to several problems related to offshore operations. Although the data for all of the examples are artificial, the cases discussed will be recognized as being based on actual situations. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The analytical approach which is to be described stems from research on offshore foundations, in particular, the study of lateral-load behavior of foundation piles. The method represents a generalization of a technique which was suggested by Gleser' and extended by Focht and McClelland2 and Reese and Matlock." To maintain generality and therefore versatility in the method, a considerable variety of input data is considered. Fig. 1 illustrates the various types of loads and restraints which might be applied to a short segment of a beam. Each of the terms illustrated in the figure is shown acting in a positive sense. Capital letters are used to designate concentrated quantities whereas the corresponding lower-case symbols indicate effects which are distributed in some way along the length of the beam. The transverse loads and the elastic restraints may be divided into two classes: (1) loads Q and q and springs S and s, which act normal to the axis of the beam, and (2) couples T and t and rotational springs R and r, which act in an angular sense. In addition, there is an axial force P which may be constant or may vary along the length of the beam. The bending stiffness of the beam (the product EI of the modulus of elasticity and the moment of inertia) is designated by the symbol F. The assumptions of conventional elementary beam theory provide the basis for the present method. Among these are the neglect of shearing and axial deformations and the limiting of consideration to straight beams of symmetrical cross-section. Lateral deflections are considered to be small compared to original dimensions. A deformed element of such a beam is shown in Fig. 2a. The curvature of the beam is approximated by the second derivative of the deflection y with respect to distance x along the beam. It is assumed that the material of the beam is linearly elastic and therefore the relation of Eq. 1 between curvature and bending moment M is the ordinary expression from elementary beam theory. A generalized beam element is shown in Fig. 2b. The element has been deflected in a positive direction by an amount y and tilted through a small positive angle dy/dx. The various loads and elastic restraint reactions are detailed in the figure. Temporarily, only distributed effects are considered; provision for concentrated loads and restraints will be made subsequently. HenRy Clay FRick, a pioneer in modern coke and steel industry and, in more recent years, one of the outstanding financiers of America, died on Dec. 2, 1919, at his home on Fifth Avenue, New York. Although he had been ill since election day, when he had an attack of indigestion which developed into ptomaine poisoning, his death was a surprise to all. He is survived by his widow, Adelaide Howard Childs Frick; a son, Childs Frick, one unmarried daughter, Helen C. Frick, and four grandchildren. A quiet funeral service was conducted at the Frick home on Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. Leighton Parks, pastor of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. This was attended by members and very intimate friends of the family, Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Officers of the Links Club, and Directors of the United States Steel Corpn. Henry Clay Frick was born Dec. 19, 1849, in West Overland, Westmoreland Co., Pa. His father, John W. Frick, was a farmer of Swiss ancestG, and his mother, Elizabeth Overholt Frick, a member of an old Mennonite family. Until he was sixteen, he spent his time at school, on his father's farm, and in his grandfather's distillery, where he kept books. He attended Otterbein University, in Ohio, for a year. Frick, learning that coke was an essential of the already rapidly developing steel business, early invested every cent he could get in coking-coal lands. With the help of an associate of his grandfather, he formed the corporation of Frick & Co., coke dealers, and acquired fifty-one ovens in the Connellsville region and 300 acres of soft-coal lands. During the panic of '73, with the help of Judge Thomas Mellon, a Pittsburgh 'banker, he bought out his partners and while coke was selling at 90 cents a ton enlarged his purchases of suitable lands. Later, the price of coke increased until it was selling at $5 a ton. Before he was 30 years old, Frick was rated a millionaire. Association with CaRnegie In 1878, he sold an interest in the business Do E. M. Ferguson of New York, and later a share to Mr. Ferguson's brother. Four years later the business was reorganized into the H. C. Frick Coke Co. with vast coal lands, great banks of ovens, and a capitalization of $2,000,000. Then began his association with Andrew Carnegie. He exchanged a part of his coke interest for shares in Carnegie Brothers of Pittsburgh,

A method of calculating the changes in blast-furnace performance brought about by burden and/or blast modifications is presented. Essentially the method consists of three simultaneous equutions derived from materials and heat balances. These equations can be used not only to evaluate quantitatively the effect of changes in process operating variables on furnace performance, but also to provide a useful means of evaluating changes in process variables which cannot be measured directly. It has been customary for a number of years to use simple heat and materials balances as a basis for assessing blast-furnace practice. A good example of the method used to set up these balances is that proposed by Joseph and Neustatter.1 This approach to process assessment has limited utility, however, in that it cannot be used to predict the furnace coke rate or production under new operating conditions. Using an approach based on multiple correlation of blast-furnace variables, R V. Flint2 has developed an equation which may be used to predict the change in coke rate that will result from some changes in operating conditions with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Although this equation has useful applications in production planning, it cannot be used to study the relationships between the operating variables and the fundamental thermochemi-cal characteristics of the process. In attempting to analyze the blast-furnace process quantitatively, the idea of dividing the furnace into zones3 may at first appear attractive. In our present state of knowledge, however, it is not possible to define with any accuracy the physical limits of such zones in relationship to their temperatures or to the reactions which may occur in them. Although its application is restricted, the zonal approach to blast-furnace analysis is useful in some instances. For example, the change in the calculated flame temperature in the "combustion zone" caused by injecting steam constitutes information which is helpful in understanding why the addition of steam to the blast is best accompanied by an increase in blast temperature. The zonal approach cannot, at the present time, be used to establish the relationships between process variables and process performance if the whole process rather than part of it is to be considered. One of the earliest approaches to the problem of relating blast-furnace operating variables to pro- duction and coke rate was that developed by Marshall.4 Essentially Marshall's work showed that it was possible to estimate the performance of a furnace by solving three simultaneous equations which consisted of rudimentary carbon and heat balances plus a further equation relating the production, wind rate, and the carbon burned at the tuyeres. Although these equations did not include all of the chemical and thermal variables of the process, their derivation and application seems to be the earliest attempt which achieved any success in relating prior furnace operating data to the calculation of furnace performance under different blast conditions. Work carried out in Germany has been directed mainly towards prediction of coke rates using material and thermal balances rather than statistical methods. wesemann5 used prior furnace operating data as part of the basis for predicting the change in coke rate accompanying a change in burden composition. This author employed a method of successive approximations to estimate the secondary changes in slag volume and stone rate brought about by the change in coke rate. The most recent analysis, which seems to have been developed concurrently with the thermochemical model presented in this paper, has been described by Georgen.6 This author has succeeded in improving on Wesemann's approach by expressing the total changes in the slag volume and stone rate in terms of the change in coke rate itself. This is accomplished in a manner similar to that used in the thermochemical model described in this paper. Although Georgen makes use of a calculated furnace heat loss, he does not relate the heat loss per unit of hot metal to the production rate as is done in the present work. Georgen's approach may be used to calculate the changes in materials requirements accompanying changes in furnace operation; it cannot be used to assess the resulting changes in production. The fact that blast-furnace behavior can be interpreted by consideration of the heat requirements of the process was demonstrated by Dancy, Sadler, and Lander.7 In the analysis of blast-furnace operation with oxygen and steam injection these authors showed that it was possible to account for the changes in production and coke rate

A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8' ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,' dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,' carbon in a Fe,' and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith's data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken's model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry's law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound's discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms. Consolidation of hydride process, electrolytic, calcium reduced, and comminuted thorium powder, as well as saw chips and lathe turnings, by vacuum hot pressing and by cold pressing-vacuum sintering was studied. The mechanical properties of the consolidated material in the extruded form are compared with those of wrought castings. AT present there little little industrial use for thorium metal, although it has some important though small scale applications in electronic equipment. Despite its high inelting point—about 1750°C —a low modulus of elasticity, 11.4xl0 si at 20°C;' relatively low mechanical properties coupled with a high density, 11.7 g per cu cm; and an unusually high chemical activity with normal atmospheres limit any structural applications. The metal is utilized as an alloying element principally in magnesium. Pure thorium finds utility as electrodes in gaseous discharge lamps such as the high intensity mercury lamp' because its low work function and high electron emissivity provide lower starting potentials and more uniform operating characteristics than other available materials. The metal is also found in photoelectric tubes used for the measurement of the ultraviolet spectrum." Thorium metal has been used in germicidal lamps of the cold cathode type as sputtered coatings on nickel in order to provide a low work function surface and a low starting voltage. Other applications have involved the radioactive properties of thorium for the production of ionized particles." The potential value of thorium is much greater than its present use pattern because of possible utility in the field of nuclear power. Th may be converted through nuclear reaction to a fissionable element U which should be capable of acting similarly to U in the g'eneration of atomic power. Thorium has been reported to be about three times as plentiful as uranium in the earth's crust, placing it in the order of abundance of lead and molybdenum." Thus, it is of interest in augmenting the potential supply of fissionable material for nuclear power. Because of its high melting point, thorium is usually produced as a powder through the calcium reduction of its oxide or thermal reduction of halides by sodium, magnesium, and calcium. It may also be produced in flake form by electrolysis of fused alkali or alkaline earth chloricles and fluorides. Therefore, powder metallurgy assumes importance in the fab- rication of thorium metal shapes. Furthermore, it is rather difficult to obtain pure thorium by melting, as the molten metal reacts readily with graphite as well as oxide, carbide, and nitride refractories. These contaminate the melt with oxides, carbides, and metallic impurities." The current investigation was undertaken to examine the fabrication of thorium by powder metallurgy methods which have been used for the commercial production of beryllium and other metals.' A sparcity of data concerning the comparative cold and hot compaction of thorium powders of different derivation existed. Therefore, all commercially available types were examined along with other experimentally produced thorium powders in order to round out the comparison of consolidated thorium powders with melted reguline metal. Review of the Literature By heating a mixture of ThC1, with potassium, Berzelius made the first thorium metal as an impure powder in 1828. Improvements in the basic process, increasing thorium assay to 99 pct, were made by several investigators including Arsem," Lely and Hamberger10 and Von Bolton." Calcium reduction of Tho, to make powders was investigated by Berger," Huppertz,'" Kroll," and Kuzel and Wedekind.'" A thorium powder produced by this method using a CaC1, fluxing agent assayed 99.7 pct, as reported by Marden and Rentschler.'" Compacted and sintered, this product was found to be ductile, and could be fabricated into wire and sheet. Improvements of the calcium reduction process were made later" wherein CaCl, was eliminated from the reaction, producing metal assaying 99.8 pct Th. Further work by Lilliendah118 howed that a coarser metal could be obtained by the substitution of ThC1, or ThOC1, for oxide with consequent advantage of stability to atmospheric reaction. Reports on the technology of thorium developed in Germany during World War II have been made by Espe."' Thorium powder of 99.5 pct Th was obtained by reduction of the oxide by calcium. Screening to —200 mesh, compacting with about 20 tsi, and sintering in vacuo at 1320" to 1360°C for 3 hr resulted in a porous sinter cake. The sinter cake was sufficiently ductile to be worked into bar, wire, and sheet which could be employed as electrode materials.

A SELF-RESPECTING miner doesn't wash the cuttin's off his hard hat until he quits his job but, on the other hand, he keeps his lamp clean and a "spot" focus on the work at hand; the former habit is a matter of pride and the latter serves for efficient operation. During 1949, the mining engineer got all the "wet raises" for the problem of cutting costs to meet the drop of metal prices and keeping research work up to schedule when strikes tied up his work were his headaches. We note, not without admiration, that he hasn't washed the muck off his hat in token of surrender but, on the contrary, his light shines bright on the job to be done as can be seen in the following pages. Few people have any conception of how much ore and rock have to be mined and how much sorting it takes to cull a pound of copper from a 1 % ore body. These people would be even more startled to picture the problems faced by the engineer in mining and extracting, profitably, .2 oz of gold from a ton of ore as is done at some of our lode mines. Strikers have sometimes kept our researchers from their pilot plants and research laboratories, but the end of the year shows progress in making ore out of taconite and ferruginous sandstone, with a pilot plant in operation at Aurora, Minn., and plans for one near Birmingham. Unfortunately, it looks as though the mining engineer will have to make John Doe secure in mineral resources in spite of himself. Coal for steel, power, and to warm our homes is still economically possible, in spite of Mr. Lewis, through development of mechanized tools for mining. During the year, the use of continuous mining machines has extended, transport systems are being adopted to keep the ore flowing from the face to the tune of 40 tons per man-shift. Experiments in the gasification of coal are going forward in several places and may eventually extend our fuel reserves by the addition of coal seams now too lean for mining. Liquid fuel from coal, oil shale, or natural gas will become economic when oil consumption exceeds our supply; but, at less than 30 cents a ton direct cost for mining oil shale, the engineer is almost making it competitive under present market conditions. In this age of specialists, the mining engineer is still holding his own as a broad-gauge man. As a matter of fact, he is emerging from a stage of semispecialization as a coal, nonmetallics, or metal mining man to the realization that, with mechanization, mining is fundamentally materials handling whether it is fluorspar, coal, or copper ore. From the coal business come rubber-tired mechanical loaders to the iron mines of Birmingham. Shuttle cars are also finding application in the lead mines of the Tri-State. Open-pit methods are universal. Belt conveyors, trucks, Diesels, and mobile, jumbomounted drills are finding application in all types of mining. In preparation, such methods as flotation,- heavy density, electrical, and centrifugal are finding application in coal, nonmetallics, and metals. These concepts have been recognized by the mining engineer who has kept himself informed and has been quick to seize a method, machine, or a process from another operation and, with ingenuity, applied it to his problems. This, our Annual Review issue, is written by mining engineers. In gathering these separate articles under one cover for publication, we think of it as a trrbute to the tireless energy and skill of these men. They get little of the publicity accorded physicists, medical men, labor leaders, or company executives, but they supply raw materials without which industry would die.

Laboratory research has been conducted to evaluute the effect of clay hydration on the permeability to gas of water-sensitive reservoir sands. Samples of a .sandstone containing trace amounts of montmorillonite and a sample of montmorillonite were .studied in the laboratory to detertnine whether swelling or dispersion was the cause of permeability reduction in these samples. Heliuin, containing various amounts of water vapor, was used to hydrate the clay minerals and to determine the gas permeability at various stages of clay hydration. The amount of water adsorbed by the samples using this method is small. The nonwetting-phase permeability at higher water saturations war investigated by saturating the with water and measuring the permeability to humid helium while decreasing the water saturation, Relative-permeability curves obtained from results of these procedures were used to estimate the effect of the swelling of trace amounts of mont/tlorillonite on the permeability of the .samples. Most of the damage to the permeability when reservoir sands containing trace amounts of montmorillonite are exposed to fresh water is due to dispersion and movement of clays. Blockage of pores by the increased volume of expanded montmorillonite is believed to result in permeability damage that is small in comparison to the observed damage to the samples tested. INTRODUCTION Studies have shown that permeability is severely damaged when sands containing only small amounts of montmorillonite are contacted by fresh water.15 When samples of sands containing large amounts of montmorillonite are placed in fresh water in the laboratory, these samples may completely disintegrate, forming an unconsolidated mass of larger volume than that occupied by the dry sample." In this case, it is apparent that the swelling of montmoril-lonite has destroyed the pore structure of the sand. If only a trace of montmorillonite is present in a sand. samples may remain intact when saturated with water, although the permeability to water is a small fraction of the gas permeability of the dry sample. Many workers in the field of water sensitivity have attributed this reduction in permeability to the blocking of pores and reduction of pore size by the increased volume occupied by expanded mont- niorillonite. if the sand contains a detectable amount of montmorill'onite or mixed-layer clay containing rnontmorillonite. Logically3 the smaller amount of montmorillonite present in a sand, the smaller should he the effect of montnlorillonite swelling on permeability; however, the quantity of montmorillonite sufficient to cause severe damage by swelling is not known. Although hundreds of samples have been tested in our laboratory, no correlation has been established between the amount of montmorillonite in samples and the permeability reduction caused by fresh water. To many petroleum engineers, the phrase "clay swelling" is synonymous with "water sensitivity", or "permeability reduction" implying that any formation damage due to the hydration of clays is caused by swelling. Although all clays adsorb water on their surfaces, montmorillonite is the only clay mineral commonly found in reservoir rocks which adsorbs water between intercrystalline layers, resulting in expansion of the clay particle. As montmoril-lonite swells, the first few layers of water adsorbed between platelets are strongly held and well oriented, and the montmorillonite retains its crystalline structure, although expanded. As swelling of sodium montmorillonite continues, the platelets become farther apart and the forces orienting the platelets in the crystalline structure become weaker, resulting in a less orderly orientation of platelets. In an abundance of water, small groups of platelets may become detached from the original monl-rnorillonite particle and may be dispersed throughout the water phase. Because of its swelling properties, sodium montmorillonite is very easily dispersed in water. Particles of other clay minerals. such as illite and kaolinite may also be dispersed in water. causing water sensitivity of sands not containing montmorillonite. The presence of an immobile layer of water adsorbed on the surface of clays has been considered a possible cause of the low permeability to water of dirty sands. Grim states that the thickness of the layer of immobile water held by sodium montrnorillonite is three nlolecular layers or 7.5 A (angstroms), with some orientation of water extending to 100 A. Assuming a very thick, immobile water layer adsorbed on the surface of a pore represented by a capillary tube, the maximum effect of the water layer on permeability can be calculated. Using a pore radius of 10 ' cm and an immobile water layer of 50 A. the calculation shows the permeability to be reduced only 2 per cent. Similar calculations can be used to show that the effect of electro-osmotic counterflow is of the same order of magnitude as that of bound water. A long term project at Shell Development Co.'s Exploration and Production Research Laboratory has been the improvement of the accuracy and the ease of BHP measurements. As a result of these efforts, two complete and separate systems have now been built for the automatic logging of BHP variations. The first of these is a small-diameter instrument suitable for running through production tubing on a single-conductor well cable. During the development of this instrument, as much emphasis was placed on providing a high degree of usable sensitivity and repeatable accuracy as on obtaining the advantages of surface recording. The second system combines the benefits of automatic, unattended recording with the convenience of a permanently installed Maihak BHP transmitter.' THE CABLE INSTRUMENT For many years the standard instrument for BHP determination has been the wireline-operated Amerada recording pressure gauge or one of several other similar devices. This gauge records on a small clock-driven chart carried within the instrument, and although relatively precise readings from the chart are possible, they are difficult to ob-tain. a Both the maximum recording time and the resolution of the time measurements are limited by chart size, and when a slow clock is required for long tests, the precision of the time measurement is often inadequate. Since it is impossible to determine the data being recorded until the gauge has been returned to the surface, wasted time often results when a test is protracted beyond the necessary time or when it is terminated too soon and must be re-run. Clock stoppage or other malfunctions which would be immediately apparent with surface recording remains undetected with down-hole recording; the test is continued for its full term with a consequent loss in production time. As new uses for subsurface pressure data evolved, the shortcomings of the wireline instrument became increasingly apparent, and the concurrent development of a surface-recording pressure gauge and the associated high-pressure well cable service unit' was undertaken. Description of the Instrument Because of its ready availability and advanced degree of development, the Amerada bourdon-tube element was chosen as the basic pressure-sensing device. This element converts a given pressure into a proportional angular displacement of its output shaft, and a suitable telemetering system was designed to measure accurately the extent of this displacement and to transmit the measurement to the surface and record it. The telemetering system furnishes a digital record printed on paper tape by an adding machine-type printer. The present arrangement provides a resolution of one part in 42,000 over the angular equivalent of full-scale deflection, giving a usable sensitivity of better than 0.0025 per cent of full scale. An additional refinement simultaneously records on the tape the time or the depth of the measurement, also in digital form. When the instrument is placed in operation, an adjustable programer can be set to initiate a read-out cycle automatically at selected time intervals. When subsurface pressures are changing rapidly, readings may be recorded as frequently as once every 10 seconds; when pressures are more nearly stabilized, the period between readings may be extended to as much as 30 minutes. Because the instrument is surface-powered as well as surface-recording, the maximum period of continuous logging is (for all prac. tical purposes) unlimited. The subsurface instrument is a tubular tool, 1 1/4-in. in diameter and 6.5 ft in length, operating on 12,000 ft of conventional 3/16-in. IHO logging cable. The transmitting section, mounted above the bourdon-tube element in place of the regular recording mechanism, contains no fragile vacuum tubes or temperature-sensitive transistors. This unit has been laboratory-tested to 1 0,000 psi and 300°F and has performed dependably during a number of field operations. The down-hole transmitting arrangement can be fitted to any standard Amerada pressure element, regardless of range and with no modification of the element itself. Calibration To obtain a repeatability commensurate with the sensitivity and resolution of the instrument, it was necessary to develop a special calibrating technique. The manufacturers of the Amerada recording pressure gauge claim an accuracy of only 0.25 per cent of full scale, which is a realistic figure for normal calibrating and operating procedures. Some of the limiting factors relative to explosive crushing of rock and ways to overcome a few of these problems are presented. Relationships between borehole diameters, bench heights, and spacings, along with a review of the influence geometry has on energy as these are changed, are discussed. Efficiency in use of explosives and the decay of energy as it moves through rock and is absorbed and dissipated, is described, along with fragmentation as a function of spacings and energy zoning, etc. Communications are one of the major problems encountered. In an effort to provide a better understanding of the use of explosives, it is necessary to take a little different view of what explosives are, how to look at them as tools to fragment rock, and some of the problems encountered in doing so. First, take the explosive: although there are many factors involved, consider these as being reduced to only two — shock-strain imparted to the rock by the high early development of energy, and the gas effect which is a combination of heat, moles of gas formed, rate of formation of these gases which develop pressures, etc. First, consider shock energy by itself and assume there is no gas effect in the reaction. Fig. 1 illustrates a block or cube of rock, in the center of which is detonated an explosive charge which is 100% shock energy. Tensile slabbing would be seen on the surface and probably the cube of rock would generally hang together even though microcracks were formed. If the situation is reversed and an explosive whch has no shock energy and only gas effect (Fig. 2) is considered, the cube of rock would act as a pressure vessel and contain the pressure from the gas effect until it exceeded the rock-vessel strength; then the rock would break in a few large pieces. If these two kinds of energy are put together and the area of shock-strain around the explosive (Fig. 3) is considered, the two energies will be seen working together to furnish broken rock. The gas effect applies pressure to the microcracks formed from the shock energy to weaken the rock-pressure vessel and propagate these cracks to break the rock apart. It not only will be broken more finely, but will break apart at a lower pressure than the gaseffect case, since the shock energy has first weakened the rock vessel. Although tensile spalling from the shock-strain imparts momentum to the rock, the main source of displacement comes from the gas effect. The term "rock" is being used to mean any material to be blasted. These energies are absorbed by the rock in different ways. First, classify rock into two main categories: "elastic" and "plastic-acting." Elastic rock should be thought of as rock which can transmit a shock wave and is high in compressive strength, such as granite or quartzite. Since this elastic rock transmits a shock wave well, it makes good use of the shock energy from the explosive-forming cracks, etc., for the gas effect to work on. Plastic-acting rocks are rock masses which are relatively low in compressive strength and absorb shock energy at a much faster rate, thereby making poor use of the shock energy by not developing as extensive a cracked zone for the gas effect to work on. Rocks of this type are generally softer materials such as some limestones, sandstones, and porphyries. For the most part, the shockenergy part of the explosive reaction is wasted in plastic-acting rock, leaving most of the work to the gas effect. Since the ratio of gas effect to shock energy is different in different explosives, it is easy to understand why some explosives perform well in elastic rock and poorly in plastic-acting rock, and vice versa. Some of the most difficult blasting situations arise when mixtures of plastic-acting and elastic rock are encountered (Fig. 4). Fig. 4 shows an example of granite boulders cemented together with something like a decomposed quartz monzonite which is plastic-acting. The elastic granite boulders will transmit the shock-strain within itself, but when this shock tries to move through the monzonite to the next boulder, its intensity is absorbed by the monzonite and little shock-strain is placed on the adjoining boulder. In addition to this loss by absorbtion, shock reflection at the surface of the boulder will effect tensile spalling. The net effect is poor breakage of the boulders which do not have drillholes in them as they simply will be popped out with the muck. The same is true (Fig. 5) when layers and joints make

There were no important developments in the oil and gas industry in South Arkansas during 1935. Oil production, totaling 11,138,340 bbl., continued the decline that has been normal since 1925, but the decline from 1934 was only 278,600 bbl., or 2.5 per cent. The principal decline was in the Smackover field, while only the Champagnolle and Garland City fields showed notable increases. More wells were drilled than in any recent year, with a total of 123 completions. There were 44 oil wells, with a total reported initial daily production of 10,013 bbl., or an average of 227 bbl. per well. Two small gas wells were completed in Union County, where the gas is used locally for pumping and field operations. There were 77 dry holes, of which 28 were in or near oil fields and 49 were wildcats. Active drilling oper-at'ions declined from 65 at the beginning of 1935 to 41 at the end. Most of the drilling was done during the first part of the year, espr-chially (luring the flurry caused by the discovery late in 1934 of the "Taylor" sand production in the Champagnolle field, but the producing area was soon outlined. In November, 1935, the J. E. Crosbie, Inc., NO. 1 Sullivant in sec. 12, 17s. 14W., producing 560 bbl. per day at 3175 ft., opened a new sand lens in the eastern part of the field. The Camden "oil field," discovered in the last week of 1934, remained a one-well field, although four offset tests were drilled, besides a number of others in the immediate vicinity. Several interesting deep tests were drilled during the year, which added a great deal to the general knowledge of the subsurface formations and the structure of south Arkansas, but were not particularly encouraging as to prospects for the very deep production. First, the H. L. Hunt, No. 15 E. F. Gregory well in sec. 10, 17S., 14\W., in the Champagnolle field, was drilled to a depth of 6911 ft. It pene-trated red beds for 2982 ft., from 2943 to 5925 ft., mostly if riot entirely of Lower Cretaceous age. There was some anhydrite in the last 135 ft. of red beds. This was followed by 890 ft. of limestone, probahly Permian, and the rock salt was struck at 6815 ft. The salt is now generally conceded to be of Permian age. THE research and policy committee of the Committee for Economic Development, a non-profit research organization composed of leaders in industry and the professions, including such prominent figures as Dwight D. Eisenhower, Paul G. Hoffman, and Charles E. Wilson, recently published a report entitled "How to Raise Real Wages." Since its founding in 1942 the CED has initiated many objective studies on matters of national economic policy, and has gained a fair measure of prestige from its activities. The CED's latest report cites the more than three- fold rise in real wages in the United States in the past 50 years and attributes the accompanying improvement in the standard of living to the great in- crease in production per man hour. The report states that in order for production to continue rising in the future with the attendant increase in real wages four basic conditions must be manifest: (1) better methods, (2) more capital, (3) better training of workers, and (4) better management. The report cautions that although prospects for increases in output per man hour are good "it is desirable that steps be taken to encourage such a rise."

Examples are presented which show that the velocity~ amplitude, attenuation and apparent frequency of several acoustic waves can be recorded in the borehole. Examination of such recordings, termed "character" logs, indicates that the wave types observed include a refracted compressional wave and a wave which travels with formation shear velocity. Laboratory data are used to show that compressional and shear wave velocities are dependent on porosity, effective stress and lithology; but that the change in reciprocal velocity per unit change in porosity is larger for shear waves than for compressional waves. We, therefore, conclude that. the accuracy of porosity determinations can sometimes be improved by use of shear wave velocities, provided that the shear wave amplitudes are large enough to delineate the shear arrival from the preceding compressional arrival on the character log. Borehole data are presented which show that the difference between shear wave and compressional wave reciprocal velocities can be used to predict porosities. This is a refinement which may allow the prediction of porosities from single-receiver acoustic logs without introduction of errors from borehole fluid traveltimes. Laboratory and field data are presented to show that the relationship between compressional and shear wave velocities can be used to indicate lithology. An example is presented to show that fractures usually cause a greater reduction in borehole shear wave amplitudes than in compressional wave amplitudes, an effect which may offer a more reliable means of detecting fractures. The complexity of the borehole acoustic wave train can rake presently available cement bond logs highly sensitive to the gate and bias settings used. The character log offers a means to circumvent possible misinterpretations by recording all amplitudes, from which the interpreter can select the appropriate data for evaluating the cement bond. Character logs may also be used as a quality control for open-hole transit-time logs when existence of small compressional wave amplitudes interferes with the proper functioning of bias-controlled timing devices. Evaluation of the potential uses of character log data is not complete; but a character log presented in a form convenient for routine use would be a desirable addition to currently available logs. To summarize, possible applications for such a log in formation evaluation include the following (1) quality control of transit-time logs, (2) refinement of porosity predictions, (3) determination of lithology, (4) improvement of fracture detection and (5) improvement of cement bond evaluation. Suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a suficient but practical character log for routine use. INTRODUCTION Acoustic logs have become a widely used porosity tool in formation evaluation. In addition, there is a growing application of acoustic logs in cement bond evaluation and fracture detection. These applications have mainly involved the use of logs of first-arrival transit times and amplitudes and have not included detailed studies of the complete signal. The purpose of this paper is to show that significant benefits in formation evaluation can be gained by a more complete use of the acoustic wave train generated in the borehole by an acoustic logging tool. We hope that this discussion will also stimulate further development of logs suitable for routine use so that these benefits may be realized. Examples of acoustic wave train logs, termed "character" logs, are presented to show that several identifiable acoustic waves are present in the borehole. The measurable characteristics of these acoustic waves and some of their relations to formation properties of interest are also discussed. The more obvious potential uses of character logs are listed, and some suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a sufficient but practical character log for routine use. CHARACTER LOGS Some 10 years ago, Vogel' and Summers and Broding' noted that the signals received uphole from an acoustic logging tool located in a borehole had a number of interesting characteristics. The logging tool consisted of two or more pressure transducers spaced on an acoustically insulated body (Fig. la). One of the pressure transducers was used as a transmitter to generate pressure waves in the borehole fluid. The other transducer served as a receiver to detect any pressure waves reaching it in the borehole. The receiver then converted these pressure waves to electrical signals which were transmitted to the surface and displayed on an oscilloscope as a record of time vs receiver-signal amplitude. The crack formation and propagation in the single -phase Cu-4 pct Ag alloys were studied. The alloys were loaded in mercury to various stress levels, the mercury was removed, and the specimen examined for cracks. Cracks were found to develop below the fracture stress; the frequency of such cracks increased with increasing stress level. Some cracks were nmpropagative. Fracture in mercury was found to occur by the link-up of cracks formed at various stress levels rather than by the growth and propagation of a single crack. If the mercury environment is removed prior to a critical amount of crack formation, then continued loading results in ductile fracture. The appearance of the cracks at selected grain boundaries is related to the relative orientation of the boundaries, as are the propaga-tive characteristics of the crack. The mercury interaction appears to be one of lowering the strength of the metal-metal bonds in the high-stress area of the grain boundary. GRIFFITH'S microcrack theory1 proposed a critical crack size above which a crack in an elastic material grows with decreasing energy at a stress of From his theory it was proposed that the presence of a liquid tends to lower the surface energy of the microcrack faces2 leading to a decrease in the critical crack size necessary for spontaneous fracture propagation. stroh3 proposed that the stress concentration at a grain boundary due to pile-up may initiate a microcrack at the grain boundary. petch4 and Stroh5 evaluated the stress distribution at the head of a pile-up in a polycrystal-line material and deduced that the critical crack size and hence of is dependent on the grain size. Experimental verification of this dependence was found by petch6 for hydrogen embrittlement of steel. Studies in stress-corrosion cracking7 have provided a picture of fracture which shows that initial separations occur in a scattered, independent fashion in regions of high tensile stress. A minimum or threshold stress is necessary to produce a sufficient stress concentration to initiate frac- ture. These separations join up to form a crack. The extension of fracture is largely discontinuous and consists of a joining up of cracks. In recent worka evidence of this scattered crack network was found in a Cu-Ag alloy embrittled by mercury. For the Cu alloy-Hg couple, the crack path has also been found to be dependent on the orientation of adjacent grains, and with the addition of zinc to mercury a reduction in embrittlement along with a change in fracture morphology was found.9 In this present study, a mercury-dewetting method was used to observe crack initiation and fracture morphology when a Cu-4 pct Ag alloy is deformed in mercury and Hg-Zn solutions. PROCEDURE Specimens of Cu-4 pct Ag were prepared as in previous crack-path studies.' The specimens were heated at 770°C for 24 hr and water-quenched Tension tests using a table-model Instron were carried out in mercury and in various concentrations of Hg-Zn. Loading was in steps up to the fracture stress, with the load being removed and the specimen examined for surface cracks at each step. The specimens were dewetted after each load to permit examination of the surface structure and rewetted prior to continued loading. The specimens were wetted by electro polish ing in phosphoric acid, rinsing in alcohol, and then immersing in a pool of mercury. Dewetting was accomplished by flame heating the specimen for 30 sec in a vacuum. Some surface contamination was found, but not enough to obscure crack configurations and grain boundaries. RESULTS Fracture Characteristics in Mercury. Fig. 1 is a stress-strain curve showing the progressive step-wise loading of the specimen. As may be seen from the graph, the first position stopped at a is at a stress 5000 psi below the expected fracture stress of 25,000 psi. Examination of the specimen after removal of mercury showed only one crack. The appearance of this crack at a stress far below the fracture stress of this alloy in mercury did not affect the stress-strain curve in any manner. The specimen was then recoated with mercury and deformation was continued (curve b, Fig. 1) raising the stress by 4000 psi, and the same procedure re~eated. Mr. Stearns came of New England stock, a descendant in the eighth generation of Charles Stearns who was admitted freeman in Watertown in 1646. Irving Ariel Stearns was born Sept. 12, 1845, in Rushville, N. Y., a son of George W. and Miranda (Tufts) Stearns. He was graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N. Y., in the celebrated Class of 1868. After graduation, he was assistant professor of chemistry in charge of the analytical laboratory for a year, then went to Wilkes-Barre in 1869, as engineer in the office of R. P. Rothwell, at that time the leading mining engineer of the region. From 1871 to 1872, he was superintendent of the McNeal Coal & Iron Co. of Schuylkill County, Pa. and in 1872 succeeded to Mr. Rothwell's business when the latter became editor of the Engineering & Mining Journal of New York. From 1872 to 1885, Mr. stearns was in private practice as a mining engineer, handling a great amount of business in the anthracite region, including the building of the bridges at Shickshinny and Pittston, and the surveying and mapping of many of the individually operated mines. His practice extended throughout the country, with numerous examinations and reports upon mining properties in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, Colorado, California, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah; he was responsible for the design and execution of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Co.'s great Tifft Farm improvements at Buffalo, N. Y. including canals, docks, coal stocking plant, etc. He was commissioned Quartermaster of the Ninth Regiment, N. G. The solidification mechanism of experimental steel ingots (7x7x20 in.) was studied by thermal analysis. It was determined that solidification proceeds in wave-like fashion at rates which are determined by the carbon level, superheat, and mold thickness. The thermal cycles of the mold walls were related to the course of solidification. ESPITE marked advances in the field of solid state transformation, metallurgical research has contributed comparatively little exact quantitative data on the mechanism of solidification of metals. There is, therefore, a great need for such data in the various metallurgical industries. The mechanics of solidification of ingots have been investigated in the past primarily by studies of the rate of skin formation as indicated by bleeding or "pour out" tests. The "pour out" method, however, is a tool which gives only approximate information. In the case of alloys with wide solidification ranges, such as irons and certain nonferrous alloys, the method will not work at all; in the case of alloys of intermediate solidification ranges, such as commercial steels, the information may be misleading. Thus, the general adoption of this method has resulted in divergent conclusions regarding the solidification process. Chipman and Fondersmith1 by means of bleeding tests have shown that the linear growth of a solidifying ingot wall follows a parabola of the general form, D = K C, with the start of solidification delayed until superheat is exhausted, as indicated by the constant C. These tests were carried only to a wall thickness of about 5 in. using an ingot of approximately 17x39 in. in cross-section; hence the latter stages of solidification were not studied. Matuschka2-3 indicated that linear solidification of ingots is rapid at first, then slow, but toward the end of solidification the rate becomes extremely rapid again. Spretnak's4 bleeding studies indicated that, wall growth is expressed more rigorously by two parabolas, and that their point of intersection corresponds to a change of solidification mode from columnar to equiaxed. Spretnak also showed that the K values of the first parabola are always the same regardless of superheat. Nelson bled ingots of square cross-section and found that linear wall growth is initially rapid but decreases continually until the end of solidification. He also concluded that rate of solidification in ingots of square cross-section increases 2.15 pct for every 10 pct increase in cross-sectional area of the mold. The mold ratios considered (ratio of cross-sectional area of the mold to cross-sectional area of the ingot) were all less than 2 to 1. The subject of solidification has also been treated mathematically in many cases, but because of the lack of accurate thermal constants and the simplifying assumptions required, as their authors generally acknowledge, they represent only approaches to the actual conditions of ingot solidification. A third method of studying solidification is the electrical analogue method promulgated by Pasch-kis6-7 and by Jackson and coworkers.8 This method treats solidification as a heat transfer problem with the solidification cycle synthesized on an electrical circuit. Paschkis in his treatment of solidification considered the fact, which was generally ignored, that solidification of steel is not simply the growth of a plane solid wall but a more complex process occurring over a temperature range as indicated by the constitution diagram. Undoubtedly, the anomalous results obtained by bleeding tests arise from the inability to measure quantitatively this mushy condition. The shape of Paschkis' solidification curves are more nearly in accord with those of Matuschka, in that they indicate rapid linear solidification at the beginning and end of solidification with intermediate solidification occurring at a slower rate. Paschkis indicates a definite lengthening of solidification time with increasing superheat. Thermal analysis is a direct method providing exact information for all types of metals regardless of solidification range and was thus adopted in the present program to follow the entire course of solidification from the surface to the centerline of the ingots. The method has the added advantage of being adaptable to following the thermal cycle of the ingot mold during the course of solidification. Test Methods The ingots studied were of square cross-section, 20 in. long, tapered from 71/4 in. at the top to 63/4 in. at the bottom, and fed with a hot top 7 in. in diam and 12 in. high. First response to large-scale water flooding in the fractured very low permeability Spraberry sand has led to a new unique cyclic operation. Capacity water injection is used to restore reservoir pressure. This is followed by marly months production without water irzjection and the cycle repeated. Expansion of the oil, rock and water during pressure decline expels part of the fluids but capillary forces hold much of the injected water in the rock. At least with reservoir pressure restored and with partial water flood development, field performance has proved this cyclic operation is capable of producing oil from the nzatrix rock at least 50 per cent faster and with lower water percentage than is imbibition of water at stable reservoir pressure. INTRODUCTION The Spraberry Field of West Texas presents unusual problems for both primary production and water flooding. Extensive interconnected vertical fractures in the fractional-md sandstone permitted recovery of oil on 160-acre well spacing, but they made capillary end effects dominant. Primary recovery by solution gas drive is less than 10 per cent of oil in place. The concept of displacement of oil from the sand matrix by capillary irnbibition of water has led to field techniques which promise greatly increased oil recovery. Free exchange of laboratory research, reservoir information and results of field pilot tests among the various companies has been very important in development of this technology. Five units covering a total of 170,000 acres have been formed for water flooding, and 10 other areas covering an additional 175,500 acres are in various stages of unitization. Part of the Driver Unit reaching fillup first has demonstrated very unusual waterflood behavior and indicated numerous operating problems that will develop within and among the various units. SPRABERRY ROCK AND PRIMARY PERFORMANCE The Spraberry, discovered in February, 1949, is a 1,000-ft section of sandstones, shales and limestones with two main oil productive members: a 10-15 ft sand near the top and a 10-15 ft sand near the base. In part of the field some thinner intermediate sands are oil productive, and others are water bearing. All sands have permeabilities of 1 md or less and porosities of 8-15 per cent. Ordinary core analysis and electric and radiation logs are ineffective in differentiating between oil productive and nonprcductive sands. Sands capable of containing producible oil are best identified by mercury injection capillary pressure measurement and, in some cases, by core water saturation. About 3,500 wells have been drilled in the 500,000-acre trend. Vertical fractures were observed in practically all Spraberry cores. Continuity and interconnection of fractures were confirmed by pressure interference among wells during early development.' Major fractures trend northeast-southwest as indicated by oriented cores and confirmed by five fluid injection tests, by analysis of the pressure transients observed during development,''' and by three interference tests in the Driver Unit Water Flood reported herein. Fracture spac- ing probably averages inches to a few feet. Spraberry wells typically produced 100-400 BOPD initially after hydrauLic fracture treatments. By 1962 oil production had declined to an average of 12 bbl/well/day, near the economic Limits of operation. Reservoir pressure had declined from 2,300 psi initially in the Upper Spraberry and 2,500 psi in the Lower Spraberry to 500-1,000 psi. Partial closing of the fractures with declining reservoir pressure is believed to be the cause of such low oil production rates at these relatively high reservoir pressures. Cumulative recovery of 208 million bbl of oil is 80 to 90 per cent of that recoverable by primary means. Performance of the entire reservoir is summarized in Fig. 1. IMBIBITION WATER FLOODING By 1952 reservoir performance indicated low primary recoveries. Most engineers, expecting serious channeling of injected fluids through the fractures, held little hope for secondary recovery. With its extensive background of research on the fundamentals of fluid flow within reservoir rocks, Atlantic's Research and Development Division on short notice in 1952 conceived that displacement of oil by capillary imbibition of water into the rock might significantly increase Spraberry recovery. Laboratory data reported by Brownscombe and Dyes scaled to probable reservoir conditions showed potential waterflood recovery equal to or greater than primary recovery with a 10-15 year flood life.= A pilot test using three 40-acre injection wells, one central producing well and 18 surrounding observation wells demonstrated technical feasibility of the process.
