FOR the second consecutive year, attendance at the Coal Division sessions far exceeded exoectations. Those in charge were continually faced with problems of finding seats and space for attending members. 115 seats were set - II~ for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division and approximately 175 members showed un. Since the hotel management would not serve more than the 115 it meant that 60 members were forced to eat elsewhere. This created hard feelings with some members. How- ever, officials of the Division were not able to obtain in advance any indication of this overflow crowd, but are suggesting to the New York Office that some means other than ticket sales be adopted to obtain an estimate of Division luncheon and dinner attendance. Members could be circularized prior to he meeting or they could be checked when registering as to the events they expect to attend. Under the inspiring leadership of Cadwallader Evans, Jr., Chairman, the Coal Division had a phenomenal growth during the year. Reporting at the luncheon meeting, Newel1 Alford stated that approximately 190 new members had been obtained. A few more years of continuing increase at this rate will make the Coal Division one of the largest Divisions in the Institute.

Drilling in Missouri in 1945 dropped slightly from the preceding year. The only notable development was that in the Ballard area in Bates County, where a number of farmers drilled private gas wells with an average depth of a little more than 30o feet. Table 1 gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 36,186 ft. of which 20,489 ft. was by cable tools and 15,697 ft. by rotary tools.

M. H. Mueller, M. V. Nevitt, and H. W. Knott (Argonne National Laboratory)—We have reported1 the crystal structure of Ti2CU as body centered tetragonal with a. = 2.944A and co = 10.786A, six atoms per unit cell, and space groupl4/mmm(MoSi2 type). This cell is larger but definitely related to the unit cell reported by the authors. It permits definite positions for the titanium and copper atoms in the cell located as follows: 2 Cu (a) 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 1/2 4 Ti (e) 0 0 z; 1/2 1/2 1/2 + z; 0 0z; 1/2 1/2 1/2- z where z = 0.341 The face centered tetragonal cell reported by the authors can be transformed to a small body centered tetragonal cell with flo (small bet) = ao(fct)v2 Both unit cells have the same CO. Neither the face centered tetragonal cell with four atoms per unit cell nor the small body centered tetragonal cell with its two atoms per unit cell lend themselves conveniently to an orderly arrangment of the 2 to 1 ratio of titanium to copper atoms. When the co of this small body centered cell is tripled, however, a large body centered tetragonal cell results with six atoms per unit cell as described above. We had also noted that the X-ray patterns of Ti2Cu indicated that the structure could be approximately described by the face centered tetragonal cell as reported by the authors; how- ever, there was evidence for a few additional very weak lines whose positions indicated a larger unit cell. Since the X-ray scattering amplitudes of titanium and copper are nearly equal, it is evident that it is difficult to distinguish their positions especially from X-ray powder patterns. It was therefore decided to look at a powder pattern obtained by neutron diffraction since the scattering amplitudes of the two elements are considerably different in magnitude and opposite in sign. The sample used for neutron diffraction was selected from a group of three alloys prepared by arc melting using crystal bar titanium of 99.92 pet nominal purity and 99.999 pet pure Cu. The alloys designated as A, B, and C had the following respective compositions: Ti-32.8 at. pet Cu, Ti-33.3 at. pet Cu, and Ti-33.8 at. pet Cu. On the basis of the melting losses incurred, it was established that the actual concentration of either component in any of the alloys probably did not deviate from the intended value by as much as 0.1 at. pet. The alloys were annealed for 5 days at 700°C in evacuated Vycor capsules and quenched in tap water. The metallographic structures of these alloys are shown in Fig. 1. None of the alloys contained sufficient second phase to permit its positive identification. Since alloy B contained the least amount of second phase and since its composition placed it closest to the ideal stoichiometry, it was chosen for the neutron diffraction study. The oxygen content of alloy B was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at. pet. This particular intermetallic compound is especially suitable for investigation with neutron diffraction since if the titanium and copper atoms have a random statistical distribution, a near null-matrix would result in which there would be practically no coherent scattering of neutrons, and hence no Bragg diffraction peaks. C W. ROLFE, Professor of Geology, Emeritus, has of-fered a prize of $250 for the most valuable contribu-tion toward a new, better, or increased use of any mineral resource of the State of Illinois. The prize is open to anyone engaged in research, either privately, commercially, or in connection with any univer-sity or college staff, or any state or national bureau or sur-vey. The work must have been done, or at least completed, curing the year named. Three copies of the paper or books must be in the hands of the chairman of the committee on or before 6 p. m., May 1, 1928. If an unpublished paper is submitted, it should be typewritten, double spaced, on 8 1/2 by 11-in. paper. Unpublished results of study, or papers or books pub-lished since May 1, 1927, and before May 1, 1928, may be offered in the competition; but the results of the study must show real present or prospective economic value. EFFORTS to obtain definite quantitative data when employing the currently used bubble pick-up method1,2 as a pre-flotation investigation tool led to the adoption of the magnifying mirror method and the microscopic method modifications. Quantitative data obtained by these two methods were converted into bubble pick-up indices and bubble pick-up coefficients. Rough correlations were established between the calculated indices and the results of contact angle testing as well as actual flotation under the same conditions. The basic steps of the magnifying mirror method are as follows: 1—mixing 200 ml distilled water, sized and cleaned mineral particles of approximately 0.5 g, pH regulator, and flotation reagents in a glass beaker; 2—swirling the mineral particles to the center of the beaker to leave a clear circumference; 3—pressing an air bubble against the mineral particles for about 1 sec, and then moving the mineralized air bubble to the clear part of the beaker; and 4—dropping all the attached mineral particles of the air bubble by tapping the bubble holder, and counting the number of the dropped particles by looking at the magnified image in the mirror positioned beneath the beaker. This method is impractical for mineral particles which are transparent in water or finer than 200 mesh. The microscopic method is essentially similar to the above described magnifying mirror method, with the exception that the mineralized air bubble was drawn up into the bubble holder and subsequently discharged onto an externally placed watch glass, where the number of pick-up particles was counted with the aid of a microscope or hand lens. Drying was necessary when the discharged liquid interfered with the counting. The results of the bubble pick-up tests can be simply expressed in the form of the actual count. However, this can be misleading because the number of pick-up particles varies not only with the size of bubble but also with the size of particles. This short-coming is largely remedied by the use of the bubble pick-up index. as calculated from the following equation: PI = (pn/p) 100 [1] in which PI and pn are respectively the pick-up index and the number of pick-up particles under any test conditions, and p is the maximum number of pick-up particles of the same mineral under optimum flotation conditions, with the same size holder and particle. The bubble pick-up coefficient is a term coined to denote the difference between the bubble pick-up index of mineral particles in a liquid and that of the same mineral-liquid mixture plus a chemical reagent at the same pH value. For example, the difference between the pick-up index of a naturally floatable bituminous coal in a solution of water and kerosene and that of the same coal in water alone is a bubble pick-up coefficient. Compared with the contact angle method, the quantitative bubble pick-up method is inferior in accuracy but superior in sensitivity. Other advantages of the bubble pick-up method are that the apparatus can be easily assembled, the mineral sample is conventionally prepared, and the test procedure is relatively simple. References S. F many years it has been suspected that a correlation existed between pits produced by etching and the density of dislocations in crystals. In 1953, the interest in this correlation was greatly stimulated when Vogel et al' demonstrated a 1:l correlation between etch pits and dislocations in low angle grain boundaries of germanium. About two years ago, the author began attempts to produce etch pits at dislocation sites in zinc mono-crystals. These attempts met with success a year or so ago,' and since that time a survey has been made of the etch pit patterns that are associated with various modes of deformation in zinc monocrystals. Unfortunately, the etching technique that will be described is too delicate for use as an accurate quantitative tool. Nevertheless, it has been of considerable assistance in clarifying the structure of plastically deformed crystals. Technique Many attempts were made to produce etch pits in high purity zinc crystals. It was found that several techniques would produce surface grooves at grain boundaries that had misorientation angles greater than about l°, but no technique was successful for boundaries with smaller angles. Among the things that were tried were: electrolytic CrO, (both etching and polishing concentrations), HNO, in various water and alcohol solutions, dilute HC1, many 0-0,-Na,SO, solutions, Cr0,-HC1 solutions, picral, electrolytic Na,S,O,, and electrolytic NaOH and KOH. A few attempts to use cathodic sputtering and thermal etching were also made.

The use of ultrasonics in forming emulsions is not new. As early as 1927 Wood and Loomis' reported preparation of emulsions with ultrasonics. In 1935 Rschevkin and Ostrawskyz described the use of great ultrasonic power in producing fine emulsions of various oils and paraffin in water. Recently Oyama and Tanakahmployed ultra-emulsification to increase the effectiveness of sodium ethyl xanthate in flotation of chalcopyrite and galena. An emulsion is a two-phase system consisting of two incompletely miscible liquids, the one being dispersed as finite droplets in the other. The dispersed liquid is known as the internal or discontinuous phase, and the surrounding liquid is termed the external or continuous phase. There are two types of emulsions; one is oil-in-water (O/W) and the other water-in-oil (W/O). The word oil refers to the liquid other than water. Circumstances exist in which the emulsion type is not clearly defined, and the internal and external phases both contain portions of the opposite phase. This is said to be a dual emulsion. Among the many hypotheses', 6v proposed for the formation of emulsions, the Bancroft's adsorbed film or double interfacial tension theory is widely accepted. Bancroft ""educed that in the process of emulsification the interfacial tension between oil and water is lowered by the formation of an emulsifying film, which contains the adsorbed molecules and/or ions from the emulsifying agent and the two liquids.

The National Mine Health and Safety Academy near Beckley, W. Va., is dedicated to reducing accidents and improving health conditions in the mining industry through education and training. Though this basic mission remains unchanged, the Academy now serves a much broader mining community than it did when established in the late 1960s. From its original emphasis on training federal coal, metal, and nonmetal mine safety inspectors, the Academy has expanded its programs to reach mining industry and labor representatives, state agency employees, and university students taking mining-related courses. The Academy's resident programs, short courses, seminars, and continuing education courses cover a wide range of subjects and various experience levels, but all have been developed with one idea in mind - to reduce accidents and health hazards through education and training of the widest possible audience.

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has five major awards to make annually for excellence in technical papers, as follows: The Robert W. Hunt Medal, The Hadfield Prize, The J. E. Johnson Jr., Award, The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members, and the President's Prize to junior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to. a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the. award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." SIR ROBERT HADFIELD PRIZE Sir Robert Hadfield has offered an Institute prize of $1000 for researches with regard to the different forms of combination of carbon in iron and steel. Until within a few weeks no paper has been submitted which could compete for this prize. If the paper in hand should not meet the requirements, the donor has suggested that the prize be transferred and offered for: (a) the determination of the hardness in metals in connection. with super-hardness, (b) in consideration of questions of fuel economy, (c) in consideration of questions of industrial development and labor. J. E. JOHNSON, JR. AWARD This award is made from the income of a fund of $3000 donated by Mrs. Margaret Hilles Johnson in memory of her husband, J. E. Johnson, Jr., who was a prominent engineer, author of two valuable volumes on iron blast-furnace construction and practise, vice-chairman of the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee, and a frequent contributor of papers to the Institute's TRANSACTIONS.

TEXAS not only produces millions of barrels of petroleum daily, but supplies the oil industry with an asset infinitely more valuable than liquld gold. That asset is leadership. The oil industry was built from its humble beginning a few decades ago into a potent force in world economy by human hands and human brains. One of these great leaders in the busy world of oil is Wallace Pratt, of the Humble company, who has been called to a position as director and member of the executive committee of the Standard Oil of New Jersey. SINCE the installation at Kropfmuehl, Bavaria, of a modern flotation concentrator in 1938, the flake and fine graphite from the Passau area can now be delivered in about any normal specified carbon content of any size range up to a flake averaging about 0.7 mm. The graphite finds a wide German and export market for crucible manufacture, pencil leads, dry cells and other uses. A controversy over the origin of the graphite deposits is being resolved in favor of syngenesis rather than epigenesis. The syngenetic theory is newly supported by the yet unpublished work of Hartmann of the Bavarian Geological Survey. Development work and exploration for graphite in the area may be changed in direction as the syngenetic theory is accepted. Crystalline graphite is produced in the area east of Passau near the junction of Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, as shown in Fig. 1. This is the only graphite area of importance in Germany, and Gra-phitwerk Kropfmuehl AG is the only operating firm in the area. The plant and mine are located at Kropfmuehl near Hauzenberg, Kreis Wegscheid, about 10 miles east of Passau. A narrow gage railway from the mine connects with the German Railway at Schaibing Bahnhof. The Pfaffenreuth mines date from about 1730. Until the early 20th century mining operations were carried out in a haphazard fashion. During World War I graphite mining and milling was increased, since it had to cover almost all of the crucible needs of the Central Powers. Between the wars some 11 mines were operated by two large and several small companies, but under the Nazis these were consolidated by 1938 into the Kropfmuehl enterprise. Kropfmuehl built a modern flotation mill to treat its own ores and small amounts of custom ores and tailings from the area. Since Graphitwerk Kropfmuehl AG was an I.G. Farbenindustry subsidiary, it has been under Military Government Property Control and probably will be sold to private German capital. Geology The country rock of the graphite area is part of the "kristallines Grundgebirge," the series of old gneissic and schistose rocks that constitutes the bed rock of most of the Bohemian basin and rims the Sudeten-land. The gneissic rocks of the graphite area are considered to have been metamorphosed during the Carboniferous period. They are bordered on the north by granite stocks and penetrated by numerous smaller granite and pegmatitic intrusive rocks, as shown in Fig. 1. The gneiss is classed as a micaceous, coarse-grained cordierite gneiss by most investigators. It is much metamorphosed by the granite, particularly in the north near the larger granite bodies. Interbedded in the gneiss are the graphite seams and lenses, and also beds and lenses of crystalline limestone containing disseminated graphite in noncommercial quantities. The gneiss, together with the included graphite and limestone seams and lenses, is cut and displaced by a number of granite sills of medium to fine grain and by a large number of diorite lamprophyre dikes and a few syenite-pegmatite dikes. The lamprophyre dikes are of various mineral compositions and textures, but many are banded and richly impregnated with pyrite; while the syenite-pegmatite dikes are coarse-grained with good crystals of titanite, pyroxene, uralite and other green amphiboles. Most investigators and the miners speak only of diorite and granite dikes cutting the graphite seams. The diorite dikes are later than the granite and some of the faulting, as is evident from Figs. 1 and 2. Individual graphite seams and lenses may be mined for thicknesses of several feet up to several scores of feet, and for distances of several hundred feet. The aggregate thickness of a series of some 20 seams of graphite, limestone and interbedded gneiss at Kropfmuehl is stratigraphically about 450 ft. Laterally, the graphite in a seam may pinch out or grade into crystalline limestone. Graphite crystals also are found disseminated in the gneiss itself, although in unmineable concentrations. The faults that cut the graphite seams carry graphite for some feet or tens of feet away from the seams, apparently mechanically. Similarily, the graphite lenses themselves often contain mechanically introduced inclusions of wall rock, probably from flowage during folding. Graphite crystals make up 10 to 30 pct of the fresh, mineable graphite lenses at Kropfmuehl, averaging about 20 to 25 pct after hand-sorting by the miners. In weathered lenses, the graphite concentration is said to be as high as 50 pct. The associated primary and hydrothermal minerals are dom-inantly feldspar and calcite, plus quartz, pyrrhotite, pyrite, biotite and occasional garnet, hornblende, sphalerite and galena. Associated secondary minerals include kaolin, nontronite, mangano-oxide-silicates (mog), adularia and chlorite. The superimposed suite of siliceous cementation minerals present consist largely of opal, chloropal, chalcedony, jasper, and hyalite. The kaolin is of special interest since it too was mined as early as 1730 and was used in the well-known Nymphenburg porcelain from 1756 on. The kaolin is derived from the gneiss and the syenite pegmatites. The crystals of graphite vary in size within a given seam, but in seams more than a mile away from the granite on the north the average crystal-linity is less coarse, lowering the commercial value. The lenses in the Kropfmuehl-Pfaffenreuth area are the most developed, and are the only ones with deep workings now accessible. Several transition metal nitrides have been prepared and their saturation magnetization determined. On the basis of an atomic model of ferromagnetism involving a consideration of nearest neighbor interactions and the assumption that all atomic moments of the metal point in the same direction, it appears that the nitrogen interacts with d-shell of the transition metal in such a way as to reduce the magnetic moment. THERE is a large class of materials having metallic properties which are formed by a combination of hydrogen, boron, carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen with the transition metals. Several attempts have been made to establish the type of metal-nonmetal bonding in these interstitial alloys because it is believed that many of the physical properties of these materials are determined by the characteristics of this bond. Several of these alloys are ferromagnetic, and thus a powerful method is available for investigating the structures in a direct manner by measuring the saturation magnetization. The latter is a fundamental property of ferromagnetic metals and alloys which depends primarily on the electron distribution surrounding the atom. For the first row of transition metals, this refers specifically to the 3 d-shell. Since bonding involves the electronic configuration between atoms, there is reason to suppose that a relationship exists between ferromagnetism and bond type. In the case of the interstitial structures studied in this work, bonding will refer to the distribution of electrons between the transition metal and the nonmetal. Since these alloys have metallic properties, it is further proposed that any bonding interactions will involve the outer p-shell of the interstitial element and the incomplete d-shell of the transition metal. If this is the case, then the relationship between ferromagnetism and metal-non-metal bonding is established qualitatively. In order to investigate the subject quantitatively, certain transition metal nitrides were chosen because they have simple crystal structures, are ordered alloys, and are ferromagnetic. They also have sufficiently high saturation magnetization to be of technical interest. Currently there are two major theories of ferromagnetism, each of which has been applied to the interpretation of the saturation magnetization in terms of atomic structure. They are usually referred to as the band theory and the atomic theory. The former has found widespread application to the study of pure metals and certain solid-solution allays. However, it has not been applied to the interstitial structures or ordered alloys because it does not interpret the properties directly in terms of the crystal structure. The atomic theory on the other hand is especially suited to the study of interstitial structures because it permits an interpretation of ferromagnetic phenomena in terms of the crystal geometry. As has been pointed out previously, the nitrides have simple ordered crystal structures and, therefore, the choice of the atomic theory for the interpretation of the data is a natural one. One of the prime difficulties with the atomistic theory is that its mathematical justification is much more difficult, and for this reason its general acceptance will depend to a large extent on the value it has in explaining and predicting the results of experiment. Before the presentation of the theoretical basis for understanding the metal-nonmetal bond, it is useful to review the ideas existing prior to this work. Four different interpretations have been given to the metal-nonmetal bond. These are summarized as follows: 1—acceptance of electrons by the nonmetal from the incomplete d-shell of the transition metal, 2—transfer of electrons from the nonmetal to the incomplete shell of the transition metal, 3—no exchange of electrons between the two atoms, and 4— a resonating type of bond involving the p electrons of the interstitial atom giving rise to half bonds. Zener'-4 in a recent series of papers has proposed a new theory of ferromagnetism and has developed an explanation of the observed saturation magnetization of iron nitride (Fe,N) using the concept that nitrogen accepts electrons from the 3d-shell of iron. Jack," on the basis of atom size considerations in iron carbonitrides, has proposed that nitrogen transfers or donates electrons to the inner 3d-shell. He found that the effective size of the carbon atom was less than that of nitrogen and thus suggested that the interstitial atoms give up electrons. Kiessling" has studied the borides of several transition metal atoms and proposed that boron loses one p electron to the transition metal. He postulated that the additional electron added to the metal lattice compensates for the loss in metallic properties which results from the increased metal-metal atom separation. GuillaudT3" has proposed similar arguments from some recent magnetic studies he had made on manganese nitride. However, he did not base his conclusions on a quantitative argument. Pauling," in a recent paper, discussed electron transfer in in-termetallic compounds. He classified nitrogen as a hyperelectronic atom which can increase its valence by giving up electrons. He classified the transition metals as buffer atoms which are capable of either accepting or giving UP an electron. He pointed out that two factors are operating which promote electron transfer because they lead to increased stability. The first is an increase in the number of bonds, and the second is a decrease in the electric charges on the atoms. These ideas when applied to the interstitial nitrides would indicate a viewpoint favoring electron transfer by nitrogen to the transition metal. INTERMETALLIC compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dissociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous form of their solubility curves at their melting points'. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds' have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455° C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a = 6.52,b=8.60,c=4.16Å2 There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO2 = CdO + CO + Sb. From the known free energies of formation of, CdO, CO2 and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. In the study of the properties of rutile pigments it became apparent several years ago that certain physical and optical properties could not be determined on particles of pigmentary size. Since reflected light is the dominant type which reaches the eye from small particles, the true color of pure rutile was not known. Most rutile pig-ments are acicular in habit, elongated parallel to the "c" axis. It was considered important to know the nature and tone of light transmitted, for example, by a basal plate. Further, as shown by spectrophotometric curves, there is a very strong absorption of light of 4000 A as measured on particles with random orientation. It would be interesting to see whether this absorption position varied with predetermined and selected orientations. Also, since the behavior of titanium pigments in a vehicle is important, a knowledge of the surface wettability of single crystals by various media should prove very fruitful. Finally, the optical properties of rutile are such that it should show, in a single pure crystal, greater fire and brilliance than the diamond. Mineralogists had long speculated that this would be the case and curiosity was strong to produce a single crystal large enough to cut. In light of the above, a project was initiated for the formation of single crystals of rutile. Method of Formation of Rutile Single Crystals Fortunately, purification of TiO2 produced from both titanium tetra-chloride and titanyl sulphate solutions had reached the stage where spectro-graphically pure starting material could be made. Spectrographic analysis of the feed material used in the initial experiments is compared with the present feed material in Table 1. It is apparent that the present large scale purification is approximately as good as the original experimental, small scale purification. Verneuil1 produced synthetic ruby and corundum in 1904 by the well-known flame fusion process, which today bears his name. Except for mechanical improvements the present commercial production of synthetics by flame fusion is essentially unchanged from his initial method. His burner consisted of an inner orifice through which was fed the feed material and oxygen. Surrounding this was a larger outer orifice through which was fed hydrogen at lower pressure. This arrangement consists then of a lance of oxygen burning in an atmosphere of hydrogen. The proportions of hydrogen to oxygen usually used in corundum production is about 3:1, providing there is sufficient temperature to reach the 2050.°C required for the fusion of alumina. From work done in the Titanium Division Laboratories2 and from the published work of Erlich3 it was known that rutile appears to lose oxygen near its melting point and that it would not be possible to grow single crystals in a strongly reducing environment. IN 1920 the Minnesota Tax Commission estimated a reserve of 1,341,674,538 long tons of iron ore in Minnesota, the Michigan State Tax Commission report showed 199,092,855 long tons in reserve in that state, and the Wisconsin Geological Survey set the Wisconsin reserves at 21,500,000 long tons. The total reserve that year for the Lake Superior District amounted to 1,562,267,393 long tons. Ten years later the reserves of iron ore in these same districts were Minnesota 1,235,227,510, Michigan 168,349,823, and Wisconsin 23,000,000, or a total of 1,426,577,333 long tons. The decrease in ore reserves in this ten-year period was 135,690,060 long tons, but the shipments were 520,746,975 long tons. In other words, the ten-year depletion in reserves was only 8.68 per cent. If similar conditions carry into the future this calculation would indicate a life for the ore reserves of the Lake Superior region of over 100 years.

THERE have been several statements in the literature about the difficulty of producing single crystals of high-purity (99.99pct) by the strain-anneal method. Consequently, investigators tend to employ low-purity aluminum for their single-crystal experiments, or else resort to the Bridgman or other techniques which depend on solidification for the production of single crystals. The following paragraphs describe a solid-state method for the manufacture of single crystals of high-purity aluminum which should provide crystals with greater perfection than those formed by solidification. The starting material for this method of producing single crystals was secured from the Aluminum Corp. of America and has a purity of 99.99 pct, the balance being trace amounts of impurities. Specimens approximately 1 by 4 in. are sheared from sheet having a nominal 0.050 in. thickness. The specimens are given a preliminary anneal at 640°C for approximately 3 hr in order to remove fabrication strains and to produce an average grain size of about 1/4-in. diam. The specimens are then etched in Tucker's etchant (45 pct HC1, 15 pct HNO3, 15 pct HF and 25 pct H2O) to remove the oxide film. Critical strain is applied by wrapping each specimen about a 1 3/4 in. round and subsequently straightening it against a flat surface. The high-purity aluminum sheet is sufficiently soft that this operation can be accomplished by ordinary finger pressure. The specimens are immediately annealed again at 640°C for 3 hr and reetched for examination. Ordinarily, considerable growth of certain of the grains will have occurred, and occasionally a single crystal will be produced on the first attempt. The procedure of alternately straining, annealing and etching is repeated until the majority of a batch of specimens contains usable crystal sizes. Typical examples are illustrated in Fig. 1. The greatest changes in crystal sizes are produced in the initial treatments. As the average crystal sizes get coarser in the later treatments, the sever- ity of the strain must be increased in order to produce grain boundary- migration. This increase in severity is effected by decreasing the diameter of the round used for straining (to 1 1/2 in., for example) and/or wrapping the specimens about the round twice, with opposite faces in contact with the round, before flattening. Usually the strain treatments described are not severe enough to produce nucleation in coarse grain high-purity aluminum. The growth of grains occurs by strain-induced grain-boundary migration. It has been observed that the grain boundaries move most readily during the first hour or so of each annealing treatment and that the rate of movement decreases with extended holding times at temperature. Prolonged annealing treatments are therefore not usually beneficial. Similarly, the rate of growth of each crystal appears to depend upon the orientation of the crystal with relation to those of its neighbors. Frequently island grains are formed after the initial heat treatment as the result of slow grain-boundary migration. These sometime become stationary during later heat treatments. Twin orientation interfaces are frequently developed during annealing. These imperfections can usually be removed by increasing the severity of strain to produce actual nucleation of new grains of more favorable orientation at the imperfection interfaces. The largest single crystals produced in our laboratory by the above method measured 4 by 1 by 0.050 in. Examination of Laue back-reflection patterns from a limited area of the specimens, gave no evidence of polygonization. Probably there is some indication of polygonization in the original grain area provided a more sensitive technique is used for detection. Experiments to produce wider specimens were less successful, possibly because wider sheets increase the complexity of the strains induced by deformation and promote widespread nucleation. Grain boundary migration occurs preferentially in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the specimen. The choice of specimen geometry with respect to the rolling direction of the sheet appears to be immaterial in regard to the production of single crystals.

THE percentage of manganese used in commercial aluminum alloys is small, and yet this element is an important addition to some very valuable alloys. When used alone with commercial aluminum containing iron and silicon as impurities, the usual percentage in wrought materials is from 1 to 1.5 per cent., whereas castings may contain as much as 2 per cent. An aluminum-manganese alloy containing nominally 1.25 per cent. manganese is much used in sheet form for the manufacture of cooking utensils and other articles requiring a little greater strength and hardness than could be obtained with commercially pure aluminum. It is also used for various purposes in the form of rods, tubes and pipes. The aluminum-manganese alloys, both wrought 'and cast, offer excellent resistance to many kinds of corrosion attack. The U. S. Naval Gun Factory uses an aluminum alloy containing from 1 to 2 per cent. each of copper and manganese, for both castings and forgings. Manganese is also used, up to about 1 per cent., as a minor alloying .element in several of the strong aluminum alloys of the duralumin type. It is felt that the role of this element when thus used has not been fully understood, but it is believed that the results obtained in this investigation will throw additional light on the subject. The earlier work on the system aluminum-manganese was general in nature, and no detailed investigations of the relations existent in the useful aluminum-rich alloys have been reported. Guilletl1in 1902 surveyed the system, and Hendrichs2 in 1908 published an equilibrium diagram which, although based on .few data, is often used in the literature. Fragmentary work has also been done by other investigators."

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Washoe smelter,. Anaconda, Mont., the blister-copper from the converters is transferred, by means of a crane, to a refining-furnace,, in which it is brought to proper pitch by means of air and poles. From this furnace the refined copper, containing gold and silver, is poured into cast-iron molds placed on a platform-conveyor, giving an anode 36.75 in. long, 28 in. wide, and 21 in. thick. By reason of a disagreement between the smelter and the refinery, in reference to the silver-content of the anodes, it became necessary to investigate the methods of sampling used. II. SMELTER METHOD OF SAMPLING. At the smelter the sampling is done by " spotting " into water a small portion of the molten stream of copper as it flows from the furnace, by batting" the stream with a wooden paddle. The first sample is taken 30, min. after the pouring is started, three. other samples being taken at 1-hr. intervals, each sample weighing from 4 to 6 oz. The samples are dried, examined for particle's of burnt wood, screened on a 10-mesh screen of No. 8 wire to remove the fines, the oversize then screened on a 4-mesh screen of No. 20 wire to remove the coarse, the undersize of this screen being taken as the sample. Teh four portions thus obtained are thoroughly mixed and spli in half by passing over a 16-slot splitting-device, slots being 0.5 in. wide. One-half of the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis and one-half kept as a duplicate. III. REFINERY METHOD OF SAMPLING. The investigation herein described was carried out for the purpose of studying, both by chemical and metallographical means, the extent of over-oxidation of steel that can be accomplished by excessive overblowing in a Bessemer converter. 111 addition there are appended some results of basic open-hearth and crucible steels. Remarks on Chemical Methods. The test block used was hemispherical in shape, 4.5 in. in diameter and 2 in. thick. Drillings for analysis were obtained by drilling through the entire solid part of the block, carefully avoiding all cracks and blow-holes and mixing these drillings thoroughly. Drillinga were carefully examined for scale and the finest were gone over with a microscope to be sure all scale from whatever source had been removed. Oxygen was determined by the well-known method of Ledebur, modified according to Cushman,1 with, however, the removal of the preheating tube, which was found unnecessary. This method has been found to give concordant results. Blanks run from 0.0003 to 0.0006 g. Duplicate determinations varied not more than 0.001 to 0.003 per cent. It seems to be generally supposed that the hydrogen method gives only that oxygen which is combined with iron. Whether this be true or not, the content of oxygen existing as iron oxide no doubt predominates sufficiently, so that the result obtained is sufficient to indicate whether the steel is over-oxidized or not. We are well aware that the oxides of manganese and chromium, when existing alone, are not reduced by hydrogen at a red heat.
