Drilling in Central Texas during 1933 was confined, for the most part, to the search for new serpentine plugs. Bastrop County led in this particular activity, with 50 completions during the 12 months' period, 12 of which were productive. Only one new field was opened in Central Texas during the year, it being known as "Hilbig" (Bastrop County) and was discovered by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. The finding of commercial production in the serpentine at 2500 ft. led to further search in this and surrounding counties, but without success. Bexar County actually provided the greatest amount of drilling but the activity was limited to shallow development from 400 to 2000 ft. The Edwards limestone pay, which has been such a factor in past years, received but slight attention during 1933. Unsuccessful exploration was carried on in Lee and Burleson counties. With the exception of Freestone County, the Woodbine sand area was given even less consideration. This county, because of its close proximity to Anderson and Leon counties, saw a very active leasing campaign and several important tests drilled. In Central Texas, 252 wells were completed in 1933, and of this number 52, or 21 per cent, were productive. Hilbig Field The discovery well, Humble Oil & Refining Company's Annie Hassler No. 1, was completed Feb. 16, 1933, for an initial production of 65 bbl. the first hour, through tubing and 1/2-in. choke. The production was found in serpentine at 2468 ft. and tested 37.2" A.P.I. gravity. Twelve producing wells were drilled during the year and served to indicate that not more than 300 acres would comprise the entire field. Daily production at the end of the year was 775 bbl., although the field potential was 18,240 bbl. daily through 1-in. choke. The field adapts itself to pressure maintenance, and this scientific handling is being undertaken by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. through one injection well. It is the only area in the district where work of this nature is under way. Having worked some rather lorn--grade gravel during the past season at a small profit, I give the actual figures, in the hope that other mining engineers interested in this line of work may be thereby induced to do the same, in order that we may all get more data on this little-ventilated subject. The property here referred to is situated in one of the northern counties of California, where hydraulic mining is still permitted by the courts. The water-right belonging to the mine is a good one, furnishing water during about nine months, whenever there is an average rain-fall, and a fair proportion of the precipitation is in the form of snow. The ditch, about 11 miles in length, is cared for during the rainy months by two men, and during the rest of the year by one; and the water cost last season, delivered at the mine, 0.69 cent per miners' inch. The season commenced in November, 1899, and ended the last of July, 1900. During this time, 655,657 miners' inches (an inch equals 1728 cu. ft. in 24 hours) of water were used for piping, and for sweeping the bed-rock at the end of the season. From actual surveys, this amount of water washed down 1,251,399 cu. yds. of material, consisting of pay-gravel lying on the bed-rock, and varying in thickness from a few inches to 8 ft., and practically barren top-material, consisting of mountain slide, carrying considerable broken rock, clay, and soil. The banks varied in height from 50 to 130 ft., the average height being 63 ft. The grade of the sluices was 7 in. to 12 ft., the boxes being paved with block-riffles 12 in. deep. Long bed-rock cuts extended from the heads of the sluices to within a few feet of the banks, and were kept practically to grade as the work advanced. MINING taxation is a subject which bears definitely upon-the welfare of the mining indus-try. Every government must have a revenue but that revenue should be raised in such a way as to hamper as little as possible legitimate enterprise or industry. A mining tax should be fair, and one which appeals to the natural sense of justice. Our present system is a tax on net- profits after all expenses are met. On profits in excess of $10,000 the Mining Tax Act takes three per cent., one-half of which goes to the Govern-ment and one-half to the municipality in which the mines are situated, to meet local needs for roads, schools, etc. On profits from one to five million dollars", the tax is five per cent.; over five million, six per cent., and so on. The first $10,000 profit is exempt. The result is that if a mine is worked at a loss, it pays no tax at all; if it makes a small profit, it pays a small tax; if profits are large, the tax increases accordingly. It is difficult to imagine a fairer or less onerous method of taxation, or one better adapted to meet fluctuating conditions from year to year as profits rise or fall. A just and fair tax should be levied on profits, never on capital. There is, one branch of the mining industry upon which is levied a higher tax than upon other branches, namely, the nickel industry. I see no good reason why any branch of the mining industry should be discrim-inated against on a profits tax basis. A mining tax should not discourage development. The present tax meets this requirement. In the early years of a mine, when it is all outgo and no income, the mine pays no tax. Not until it reaches a productive and. profitable stage does the tax take effect, and then the mine can afford to pay it. Further, a tax on profits does not operate against the opening up of low-grade deposits, or those in which the chance of success is to a certain extent speculative.

AN iron blast furnace of 1000 tons daily capacity will produce about 100,000 cu; ft. per minute of blast-furnace gas. This contains about 25 per cent of carbon monoxide, and has a B.t.u. value of about 95. This gas-is used primarily for heating the stoves of the blast furnace, and secondarily, under boilers, for steam production. Occasionally it is also used in gas engines. The raw gas coming out of the furnace carries about 10 grains of flue dust per cubic foot of gas, under best operating conditions. With the furnace "rolling" or slipping, this quantity may temporarily be greatly increased. This dust would, of course, deposit on the checkers of the stoves, or plug the burners under the boilers; therefore the gas must be cleaned.

This discussion concerns fitting an ellipse to angle, where the permeability k is measured for a series of plugs cut from varying angles in the horizontal plane. The conclusions and procedures given by Greenkorn, et al. are in no way affected by these comments, since the degree of anisotropy (ratio of maximum to minimum permeabilities) they found is generally quite close to one (see their Table A-1). However, since large anisotropies may arise, I feel that the comments should be made. Both Marcusl and Scheidegger2 have shown that there are two limiting expressions for the permeability of an unbounded anisotropic media. If the permeability is measured in the direction of the pressure gradient, the result is equivalent to the author's Eq. 11. This is the equation used to find kl1 and k22 from the experimental data. If, however, the permeability is measured in the direction of flow, then the resulting equation for the measured permeability is From these equations it follows that plots on angle will be ellipses. The principal axes will correspond with the major and minor permeability axes. The question arises as to what permeability is actually being measured on an anisotropic sample in the laboratory. An overall pressure gradient and a gross flow rate are determined and a permeability calculated by Darcy's law. The details of the macroscopic flow within the sample will be determined by the boundary conditions of the sample and the orientation and magnitude of the major and minor permeability axes. The situation is shown in Fig. 1 for the two-dimensional case. Using the method of conformal mapping, Marcusl has solved the problem of determining the overall apparent (or measured) permeability for this experiment for any condition of W-L ratios and orientation and magnitude of the principle permeability axes. For W-L ratios approaching zero, the streamlines are all forced by the boundary conditions to be in the direction of the measured permeability which is equal to kg. Anthracite mining developments have not been as spectacular as the advances made for bituminous coal. The reasons are well known, i.e., steeply pitching seams of the western, eastern, middle and southern fields, and the physical conditions of the strata in which the seams are situated. Beds with moderate pitches (30º to 35º or less) have been mined with coal planers, longwall with movable props, shaker chutes, coal borers and large diameter boring machines. However, the use of this equipment has been limited to a relatively small portion of the production. Long-hole drilling has been developed from a point where holes of 25 or 30 ft have been replaced by those up to 130 ft. This has been possible through the introduction of primacord and similar detonating agents that can fire a long train of explosives with one cap. The usual practice in long-hole mining is to drive a gangway, chutes and monkey heading, or return airway, in the normal development manner. Two breasts can then be driven from the lower to the upper level to act as openings for the beginning of the long-hole work. Following completion of the development, holes can then be drilled from the monkey headings 100 ft or more up the pitch through the coal to within 15 ft or more of the upper level, depending on the nature of the coal on the roof. The thickness of the coal bed determines the spacing of the long holes, although they usually are on 6-ft centers for a 6-ft thick coal seam. The Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive investigations and tests on the development of a hydraulic mining system to be used in conjunction with hydraulic hoisting. Tests were conducted in cooperation with a large anthracite producer in a coal seam from 10 ft 6 in. to 15 ft in thickness and on a pitch from 0º to 20. This particular mining procedure is adaptable only to thick seams on relatively flat pitch as the maneuverability of the hydraulic jumbo is an important restricting factor.

Beneficiation of low-grade nonmetalliferous mineral deposits by electronic color sorting is currently undergoing a period of rapid development. For those deposits in which the specific gravity, strength, soundness, and electric and magnetic properties of the ore and gangue are similar, the possibility of separation by color, reflectivity, or fluorescence offers hope for the utilization of much poorer quality ore than previously thought possible. For those ores in which consistency of color is required or for which a dry process is preferred, the electronic color sorter is particularly adaptable. Tests performed late in 1966 and reported herein are the result of the continued interest in the dry beneficiation of gypsum and the development of higher capacity color sorting machines. The ore used was a discarded fraction that consisted of – 1 ¼ -in, to + 3/8 -in. ore containing 63.1 to 71.4% (average 67.7%) gypsum. This material was contaminated by various amounts of both carbonate rock and shale, but no pretreatment was performed other than screening to closer size limits before electronic color sorting.

ZAY JEFFRIES (communication to the Secretary*).-Having seen Mr. Ruder's micrographs of electrolytic iron, I am of the opinion that the tentative explanation offered verbally is correct. Mr. Ruder has informed me that both of the samples were cooled in the furnace. The structures as shown in Figs. Band C resulted from the last cooling through the temperature range near 900° C. Assuming that the rate of cooling through this range was the same in both cases, the differences in struc-ture of the gamma iron in the two samples must have ]:)]-ought about, in some way, the variations in grain size and grain shape shown in Mr. Ruder's micrographs. Even though there is practically no temperature gradient in muffle-furnace treatment during the "soaking" period, during both heating and cooling, there is a temperature gradient. Fig. B should normally have been fine-grained prior to the last cooling, due to the comparatively low maximum temperature to which it was heated (1,000° C.). On cooling through the allotropic change point at 900°, these small gamma grains, iii conjunction with the temperature gradient, should form an ideal condition for germination. Germinant grains should form near the surface of the sample (the-colder portions) and the small gamma grains would be progressively absorbed as they changed into non-gamma iron. The elongated grains in Fig. B, converging toward the axis of the piece of iron, indicate that germinant grains first formed near tine surface and advanced their boundaries toward the interior of the sample. The gamma grains in Fig. C, however, should have been large, prior to the last cooling, due to time high temperature treatment (1,250 to 1,300° C.). In other words, to use one of Prof. Howe's expressions, the crystalline organization should be very complete and the change from gamma to non-gamma iron on cooling would take place reluctantly. This resistance to change from gamma to non-gamma iron would probably be greater in the interior of the large grains than at their boundaries. SUMMARY. The supports account for over 501 of the total expenditure for a longwall face. The success and economics of a face depend upon the optimum selection of type and density of the supports. Empirical solutions involving uncertain safety factor are replaced by a geo-mining approach developed at OMRS in which the support resistance is defined by the stability index of the roof rock mass and the failure pattern of the immediate roof. The paper gives the methodology adopted to define the support resistance for Alkusha colliery longwall face of Jharia coalfield (India). The stability index of the roof mass varied from 218 to 520 for the individual beds and 1100 to 1374 for the immediate roof mass. The exact support resistance for the condition was found to be 42 t/m2.

Yunnan, a mountainous province in southwestern China, began to assume its place as an important producer of copper toward the end of the Ming dynasty (latter part of the 16th century), and since then has continued, with minor interruptions, to occupy a leading position as one of the few areas in China where relatively significant amounts of this metal can be produced. Among the copper deposits of this province, those of the following three localities have stood out as being the most significant. 1. Tung-ch'uan, in northeastern Yunnan. Here the ores are primarily bornite and chalcocite, with copper content ranging from 2% to 15% the most noteworthy T'ang-tan mine producing ores averaging 12% copper. Estimated total reserve of pure copper in this area is approximately 1,000,000 metric tons.

NO ONE could fail to be gratified to receive so profound an approbation in his calling from the members of one's own profession. To have re-ceived this distinction from men, many of whom have been professional associates and friends over more than a quarter of a century, warrants a pride. and satisfac-tion that could come from no other source. It has often been said that men are really known only to their brothers in labor and in profession. The long friendship I have received from Mr. Saunders and the distinguished service that he has contributed to the mining industry add to my appre-ciation of this event. Mr. Kelley's remarks bring my mind easily to the beginning of that period of great advance in the engineering, profession of forty years ago. Three great forces contributed to the development of the profession. The first was the era of intense development of minerals, metallurgy; and transportation in our great West. It greatly stimulated invention; it made a demand for training and skill on the part of our engineers. The pressure of national development advanced our American practice beyond the rest of the world. Moreover, the skill of our engineers of that period owes a great debt to American educators. The leaders of our universities were the first of all the educators of the world to recognize that upon them rested the responsibility to provide fundamental train-ing in, the application of science to engineering under the broadening influence and cultivation of university life. They were the first to realize that engineering must be transformed into a profession in the highest sense, not only in the training and character but that the essential quality of a profession is the instillation of ethics. That implies not alone the job but the responsibility of the community for the job. Our uni-versities poured into our development a great stream of men with this background and training. A third distinction that grew in American engineering was the transformation from solely a technical profession to a profession of administrators-the business manager with technical training.

WAR and normalcy do not walk hand in hand, whether it be in industry, the educational field, or in the daily lives of individuals. Schools and departments offering curricula in mineral engineering have been seriously disrupted, beginning with 1942 and reaching a low during 1944. Selective Service regulations and voluntary enlistments have effectually stopped the flow of college-trained men into the mineral industry, and the flow into the colleges is little more than a dribble. The year just closed has been a most serious one for our institutions. Until March many of our faculties had been kept reasonably intact because of the large training programs of the Army and Navy. W. P. MOULD*—Has consideration been given to the problem of retreating the 4,000,000 ton tailings pile to recover the very considerable amount of asbestos fiber that was lost over the years due to insufficient operation and poor recoveries? Also, what was known about the possible content of chromite and the sulphides of nickel and cobalt? M. J. MESSEL (author's reply)—Consideration was given to the problem but nothing concrete has been done up to this time. W. P. MOULD—I am certain the tail- ings contain a very considerable quantity of fiber, not all of which is in the shortest lengths, because in the milling of talc rock from a neighboring location having a common origin with the asbestos bearing serpentine source of the tailings pile, a concentrate carrying 15 pct Ni and Co in complex sulphides and constituting about 4/10 of 1 pct of the talc rock was recovered. In the belief that the tailings also contained an appreciable content of chromite (then in demand, 1937) it was suggested to the management of the asbestos company that a truck load of the current tailings be sent to the flotation plant of the talc company where it would be put over the concentrating tables in an effort to discover the presence and roughly the percentages of chromite, nickel, and cobalt. Preparations for the test were woefully inadequate and the test was completely snarled up by the surprisingly large quantity of asbestos fiber from 1 in. long down to very short fiber, all of which matted up and plugged launders and pumps with disastrous effects and practically the total loss of the sample. If anything was indicaded by the test, it was that a wet process for milling asbestos was worthy of very serious consideration. M. J. MESSEL—A wet milling process for tailings retreatment only, is at present under study at our plant. One asbestos mining company in Canada has constructed a fairly large test plant for this purpose, but as yet no definite results have been obtained other than in a small test unit plant which were in some respects quite encouraging.

THE second operation in the art of casting, and one of the greatest importance, is that of melting and thoroughly liquefying the materials of which you wish to make your casting. On this operation depends the whole outcome of your intentions and the perfection of your work. Without it, even though you had a great abundance of moulds and vast quantities of bronze, your desires, labor, and expense would all be in vain. In this operation I find on consideration that, in addition to experience, there are three necessities-perhaps indeed four-that must be provided without fail. The first is the furnace or other agent which contains the fire and the metal brought together. The second is the wood or charcoal which is the necessary and proper nutriment of the fire, from whose virtues are derived the greater or lesser forces which, according to their kind, are ready to effect what is required. The third is to have the materials disposed to easy fusion by means of corruption, alloying, or by their own nature. The fourth, as the motivating cause of the whole, could perhaps be listed as the first-this is the ingenuity and good judgment of the worker, together with the bodily exertions not only of himself but also of his helpers in addition. For, besides a certain ordinary caution, it is necessary to pay particular attention, first, to see that the furnaces, machines, ladles, hearths, refineries, and other kinds of instruments or similar vessels be made so as to dispose the metals for melting, and, when melted, that they easily maintain them so. These should also be prepared in such a way that they cannot be injured by the fire, for if they should be damaged the operation would fail. In order to do this, it is first necessary that you arrange the instruments with forethought and action so that the power of the fire can operate. Fire operates on things only when brought together with them in long-continued operation, or when driven by a great force of wind. It burns many things and softens others, but it makes the metals as liquid as water.
