Abstract
Drilled shafts are deep foundations that can carry heavy loads by transferring them to deeper and stronger soil or rock layers. The paper focuses on the drilled shafts installed in the Potomac Clayey Formation in the northern part of Virginia. The paper shares the lessons learned from using steel casing during drilling. Two load tests were done on drilled shafts with 75-centimeter diameter and 21-meter length. The first load test failed to reach the loading capacity, while the second load test succeeded after changing the installation method. The paper explains the subsurface conditions and the design methods used to estimate the axial capacity of the drilled shafts. The paper gives details about the installation methods and the reasons for not reaching the axial capacity with a standard installation method.
