Abstract

This article presents a case study with field analysis and numerical tests of grillages and helical pile foundations used for tensile and compression loads of transmission line towers in Brazil. Through finite element analysis (FEA), the structural resistance of the pile will be evaluated using pre-established supports with the stiffness indicated in different types of soil along the profile of the transmission line. The variation in this resistance of the grillage-pile assembly depending on these supports will be evaluated. Elements such as couplers, shafts, leads, extensions, helices, welds, and screws are analyzed from the perspective of structural engineering with interaction with geotechnics. Actual structural safety factors are presented in this case study taking into account tensile, compressive, torque, and construction eccentricities loads. Within the scope of quality control of helical piles and grillages of this specific project, it will be possible to verify points of attention and suggestions for improvements for helical piles and grillages in terms of manufacturing, assembly, and execution. This article hopes to present the importance of a structural analysis of soil-structure interaction that is sometimes neglected in foundation projects based on a real case study carried out in Brazil.
